Notes:

 By the time of the 1900Census, John (aka Philip) and Mary had a total of 11 children, only 6 of whom were still living. Also, a Michael ARBOUR lived with his adoptive family just a couple of houses down the street from Philip and Mary.Were they somehow related? Was Michael possibly an illegitimate grandson of Philip? Or was he a child of one of Philip's sons who may have already passed away?

We know that John died Jan 1900 - Jan 1909, and the 15 Sep 1905 death date is the only one in Minnesota for a John ARBOUR during this time span.

01 June 1832 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, John ARBOUR was the 7th of14 children of farmer and fisher Joseph ARBOUR and his wife Helen DONAGHUE. As a young man, John (aka Philip) worked as both a farmer and a fisher, which was quite common in their seaside town. On 02 October 1855 in Perce, he wed 16-year oldMary McCARTHY. The newlyweds immediately began their family, which eventually included 11 children - all of whom were born in Perce. However, by the time of the 1900 Census, while Mary had borne a total of 11 children, only 6 of them were still living. Just after the birth - and death - of their youngest child, John and Mary decided to make the momentous move to the United States. Initially, they settled in Wisconsin, but soon moved to Minnesota, finding their home in Duluth. InDuluth, John worked as a longshoreman, never far from the water. We know that John died between January 1900 and January 1909. The only death date for a John ARBOUR in Minnesota during this time span is 15September 1905, which we can fairlyconfident conclude belongs to this John, as there were no other John ARBOURs living there. John and Mary are the proud progenitors of 35 grandchildren and at least 14 great-grandchildren.

From his baptism record: "Le quatre mai mil huit cent cinquante sept, nous prêtre soussigné avons baptisé sous conditions Charles né le six avril dernier de parents inconnus. Parrain François Laflamme, Marraine Françoise Laflamme qui n'ont su signede l'e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»r." OR "On the 4th of May 1857, I, the undersigned priest, have conditionally baptised Charles born on the 6th of April to unknown parents. Godfather François Laflamme, godmother Françoise Laflamme who were not able to sign."

Note: When one is baptised as illegitimate, he (or she) is usually not "attached" to anyone. The parents are often recorded as "unknown" or "illegitimate" even tough the priest knows who they are. The father is sometimes recorded as Joseph when hisreal name is unknown.

From Denis ARBOUR on 20 Jul 2007: Why CASSIDY and ARBOUR? Maybe, after all, Charles' illegitimate mother is actually the Charlotte MORIN who married Isaac CASSIDY and his illegitimate father is an ARBOUR. Or, maybe, Charles was adopted by anARBOUR family.

It would appear as though Joseph and Georgiana left Perce at some pointbetween 1891 and 1900, probably moving to Duluth, MN, for a time. However, they seem to have left behind their son Stanislas, as he was adopted by a local family by 1901. Perhaps both Joseph and Georgiana died and that is why their children were farmed outto others.

02 June 1860 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, Joseph-Octave ARBOUR was the eldest of 5 children of fisher Michel ARBOUR and his wife Christine SWEENEY. Joseph also carried on the family tradition by becoming a fisher in his seaside village. On 05 February1883, Joseph married Georgiana PRETEAU, who appears to have only been 11 ½ at the time of their wedding, having been born on 26 August 1861. She had her first baby one year later at the age of 12 ½. In today's lingo, one might say, "WOW!" Eventually, Georgianabore 5 children - one daughter and 4 sons - at least 3 of whom are known to have reached adulthood. Around this timeJoseph and Georgiana left Perce some time between the birth of their youngest in July 1892 and June1900, probably moving to Duluth,MN, for a time. However, they seem to have left behind their son Stanislas, as hewas adopted by a local family before March 1901. Son Michel was adopted by June 1900. Perhaps both Joseph and Georgiana died and that is why their children were farmed out to others. Although Stanislas fathered 2children, neither seems to have survived childhood. Therefore, there seem to be no descendants for this particular ARBOUR line.

After failing in an attempt late lastnight to murder his wife, William Arbour, aged 48, went out to a woodshed in the rear of the house, 214 North Fifty-Second Avenue West, and slashed his throat with a razor. Hisbody was found shortly afterward bySergeant Andree and PatrolmanRoot,who had been sent for by the daughter, whose screams saved her mother's life. Arbour came home about 9 o'clock in the evening and told his daughter Beatrice, aged 16, that "somebody was going to be killed about thehouse," and if he could find her mother he would kill her. The girl was frightened and ran to a neighbor's residence. It was about an hour later that the daughter came back to the house and was attracted by screams of her mother from the kitchen.Rushing to theback to the house, the daughter found her father clutching her mother's throat and waving arazor over her head. The daughter's screams seemed to frighten her father, or at least divert his attention, and he ran out of the house. Thepolicewerethen called and they began searching the neighborhood for Mr. Arbour. They found him about a half hour later, dead, on the floor ofthe woodshed. The body was ordered removed to Filliatraut's undertaking rooms. Divorce proceedings were begunsome time ago by Mrs. Julia Arbour against her husband. The court had issued a restraining order against the husband, forbidding him to visit the home of his wife or the children. He is said to have been angered by the court's orders and tohave madeseveral threats against his wife. There are six children in the family: Mrs. Ethel Lippman, Beatrice, Violet, aged 13, Wilfred, aged 9, Bernie, aged 7, and Gorman, aged 4. He also leaves two brothers, Dan andJohn, and a sister, Mrs.Mary Brown, allliving in west Duluth. The funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock from the St JamesCatholic Church, with interment in Calvary Cemetery. The longshoreman's union, of which he was amember, will have charge ofthefuneral.

07 May 1863 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, William ARBOUR was the 4th of 10 children of farmer, fisher, and longshoreman John ARBOUR and his wife Mary McCARTHY. William'sstory istragedy personified. He emigrated to theUS with his family somewhere between 1881 and 1893, and settled initially in Wisconsin and then in Duluth, Minnesota, by 1900, possibly as early as 1895. On 29 November 1895, he married 19-year old Julia M. LUCE.Over the next 17 years, the young couple had 11 children, only7 of whomseem to have made it out of childhood: Ethel, Beatrice, Violet, Wilfred, Bernard, Edward, and Jean. Like his father before him, William alsoworkedas a fisherand then a longshoreman. It was not until shortly after his 53rd birthday (not his 48th) that tragedy struck on 52nd Avenue in Duluth during the evening of 26 May 1916. The newspaper account of the time tells quite a tale and leads oneto believe that there were someserious issues at play within the dynamic of this family.

Quite a disturbing story, by any means. Julia was not yet 40, but she attempted to keep her family together and to provide for them.Within a few years of William's death, Julia had married Moses Baker BAILES. While they had no children together, Julia did live a long time and saw thebirths of 9 grandchildren. Moses died in Duluth on 25 August 1948, at about age 81.Juliadiedin Duluth on 19 June 1961, just shy of her 85th birthday. William and Julia's grandchildren have been responsible for bringing 12 more ARBOURs into this world.

From Colleen HARVEY via email <charvey2 a live.com> on 09Jun 2012: Julia Mary Luce, born 12 Jul 1878, was baptized at St Mark's under the name of "Louis" on 21 Jul 1878. . . Julia moved to Duluth at the age of 13 and first lived with her sister Adele. Soon thereafter she moved to a boarding house formen on Gosnold near 51st Avenue West and worked as a domestic. At the age of 17, Julia married 28-year old William Arbour in a Presbyterian Church in Superior, Wisconsin. The date was 29 Nov1895, and witnesses were Mrs. W. L. Tait and Matilda Lathey. William Arbour was born in May 1866 in Quebec. His mother was Mary McCarthy, born in Ireland. He and his father John, his brother John, and his cousin Dan all appear in the Duluth directory for the first timein 1895, livingon 52nd Avenue West in a hotel/boarding house. All were French-Canadian. William was a longshoreman -- loading and unloading ships -- employed summers only. The second husband of Julia's sister Adele, John Girard, was living there, too, at the time. This area of Duluth, known as theWest End, is where all of our relatives lived beginning in the 1880s. In the 1980s, the area was very difficult to get around in because of the freeway system and cut off streets. Betweenthe ages of 17 and35,Julia had 12 children. She has been described by her descendants as being very independent, having in herited a mean temper, and she would throw things around the house when she was angry. The family always lived in arented place and, according to one of their daughters; these places were shacks with no lights, no running water, and no plumbing. William would beat Julia whenever he got drunk. At the time of the 1900 Census, they had been married 4 1/2years; theyhad a 4-yearold,a 2-year old, and one child who had already died. In the 1910 Census, Julia reported thatshe had 9 children, of whom only 5 were living. That Census showed William's 55-year old unemployed brother John and58-year old unemployed cousinDan also living with the family. William was unable to read or write, as were many other French-Canadian immigrants. Julia filed for legalseparation in St Louis County on 11 Mar 1916, charging that her husband was an alcoholic and physically and mentally abusive. The following week an Order of Protection was served on William and he was put under court order not to see her or the children. He had been in the workhousethe previous Nov for abusive behavior and assault. Being angered by therestraining order, William came to his family'shouse very intoxicatedduring the evening of 26 May 1916, got in a fight with Julia, and attemped to kill her by slashing her throat. According to the Duluth HeraldandJulia's daughter Jean, Williamhad Julia on the floor, was sitting on her stomach, and was holding herr head by her long, black hair. He was just about to slash her throat with a razor blade when her 15-year old daughter Beatrice and herboyfriend came to Julia's rescue and the boyfriend got the razor blade away from William. William left the house ina huff and the police were called to begin searching for him. He was found ashort time later in his woodshed, having taken his lifeby slashing his own throat with the razor. According to Jean, Bea's boyfriend hadput the razor on the table, but William grabbed it again before he went out. William was buried from St James Catholic Church in Duluth with interment inCalvary Cemetery there.Julia had amental breakdown following that, the older children were farmed out, and the two youngest, ages 5 and 2, were placed in St James Orphanage, which was connect with the church. They had been surviving only because Julia washed clothes formen in the boarding house, plus the children sold eggs from their chickens. Julia was sick for months, but eventually recovered enough to get a job in a hotel laundry working 7 days a week, 10 hours a day for aweekly salary of $13. She was then able to get heryoung children back home. One22 Feb 1918, at the age of 39, Julia married Moses B. Bailes, who worked at the Iron Works in West Duluth. This was also a civil ceremony,witness being Julia's14-year old daughter Violet Arbour and Ernest Bailes. Julia and Moses, also called Charles, were married for 30 years. During this time we have been told that Julia did what she wanted while Moses stayed home. She occasionally visited her sisters andmother. Sheand Moses lived on 51st Avenue West in 1920and 61st Avenue West in 1930.Moses, born in Ohio, died 25 Aug 1948, at age 81, and was buried from an Episcopal Church with interment in Oneota Cemetery. Julia died 19 Jun 1961, of renal (kidney) diseasein a Duluth hospital. Services were from GoodShepard Catholic Church, with burial in Oneota Cemetery in Duluth.

20 May 1876 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, Mary ARBOUR was the 9th of 10 children of fisher, farmer, and longshoreman John ARBOUR and his wife MaryMcCARTHY. When she was just a little girl, Mary's family emigrated from Canada to the US, settling in Minnesota in the 1880s. Mary married there in about 1898 to a man named James BROWN, who was about 10 years her senior. The youngfamily established their home in Duluth, MN, where they had 6 children, 3 daughters and 3 sons: Ella, Clarence, Mary, Ralph, Edmund, and Margaret. During their married life, James worked as a common laborer as well as a laborer at a furnace works.He died sometime after the 1930 Census, taken in Aprilof that year. Mary was 80-years oldwhen she died on her birthday in 1956.

An 80-year old Sudbury resident, Jean Arbour died today in his home following a short illness. Previously he had lived in Sturgeon Falls and Cooper Cliff. He married the former Louise Nicholas 12 years ago and is survived by four sons, Ernest of Ottawa, Joseph and Paul of Bruce Mines, Andre of Azilda; four daughters, Mrs. J. Bondarenko of Bruce Mines, Mrs. J. Descoteaux of Espanola, Mrs.A. Patry of Whitefish, and Mrs. D. Constantineau of Sudbury; 28 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mr. Arbour was born at Cap Perce, Quebec. In the city, he attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements are yet to be completed by Co-Operative Funeral Home. The body is at the family home.

  An Employee of the Port Arthur Parks Commission fo 15 years, Frank Arbour, 77 Regent Street, Port Arthur, died in hospital early this morning,aged 64. Born in Perce, QC, Mr. Arbour came to Port Arthur in1921 and two years later joined the Parks' staff. He leaves five sons, Frank, Henry, Albert, and Raymond, at home, and Roland in Sudbury; two daughters, Alice at home and Germaine, Mrs. Ernest Roach, Intola; and one brother, Joseph in PortArthur. The funeral will be held Saturday morning, leaving thefuneral parlor, 299 Arthur Street, Port Arthur, at 8:45 o'clockfor requiem mass in St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church at 9 o'clock. Interment will be in the family plot, St Andrew'sCemetery.

A resident of Port Arthur since 1917, Joseph Arbour, 86, of 46 Minot Ave., died Wednesday in hospital. He was born atPerce Cote Gaspe, Quebec.Mr. Arbour employed as custodian at St. Andrew's School until 1946 andthen at the Metropolitan Block untilretirement in 1954. Surviving areseven sons, Homer, 596 Winnipeg Ave.; Ashadore, Sarnia; Lionelle, Vancouver; Reginald, 74 Hull Ave.; Dona, 634 Harold St.; Wilfred, Onion Lake Road; George, 336 Talbot St.; one daughter, Mrs. Louise Breiland, 436Ambrose St.; 24 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren. His wife, FloraMarie, died in 1947, and he wasalso predeceased by three children, Yvonne, Reon, and Joseph. Requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 am Friday in Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church.Burial will be in St. Andrew'scemetery. Prayers will be said at 8:15 pm today.

From his grandson Norman: "Grandpa Arbour . . . used to entertain me byputting a clothes pin on his cat's tail and the cat would go 'round and 'round trying to catch it until it got too dizzy to continue! I was too young to remember much elseabout him but I'm told he was quite the character!"

  I frankly don't remember a lot about my Grandpa. He was a pretty serious alcoholic until he was in his later years and then he got cancer (he had the kind from breathing asbestos). He was so different when he got sober it was a shame it wasn't sooner. I will also ask my cousin who lives in Florida (just reconnected via Facebook). Shegrew up in Duluth (Tom Arbour's daughter) and spent a lot of time with my Grandma Ruth. I frankly don't even remember meeting any of my great aunts or uncles on his side either. I know we went to Ontario, Canadafrequently and have relatives (cousins?) there. My Aunt Marion (Ruth's sister) had a resort on Gull Wing lake.

  31 March 1901 -- Born in Perce, QC, Joseph-Arthur ARBOUR was the 5th of13 children of farmer, fisher, merchant, hotelier, garage owner, boatman, and restauranteur Alfred ARBOUR and his wife MarieDRISCOLL. Talk about a jack-of-all-trades! This mightexplain why Joseph-Arthur left home to seek his fortunes elsewhere. On 02 July 1927, he married 29-year old Marie-Mathilda-"Lillie" StAUBIN in Hull, QC. On 07 March 1929, the electrician traveled from their home in Ottawa, ON, to Detroit, MI, wherehe hoped to find work while staying with brother-in-law Alfred ALBERT. Upon entering the US, he was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, light brown hair, and brown eyes. He carried $50 in his pocket. At the timeJoseph Arthur hoped to make permanent residence in the US, but apparently the situation did not work out as he had planned. He must have not only returned to Canada but returned to Quebec as well. JosephArthur and Lillie had 4 children - 2 daughters and 2 sons - 3 of whom wereborn in the vicinity of Montreal during the years of 1932, 1936, and 1937. Lillie died in Montreal in May 1968. He will be greatly missed by his wife Jeanne Mallette, his children Jacques (Huguette), Claudette (Michel), Diane, andJean-Maurice (Johanne), aswell as by his grandchildren Jean-Francois, Eric, Veronique, Julie, Dominique, Stephanie, and Isabelle, his great-grandchildren Katherine, Elisabeth, and Alexane, his numerous nieces andnephews and many friends. He was a stockbroker with Pitfield, Mackay, Ross as Vice President and Director, with Tasse & Associes as Director of business development and with the Bank of Canada as Director of the payroll savings division for the province of Quebec. A funeral service will take place at the St Lambert Catholic Church, 41 Lorne St., inSt Lambert on 26 March at 11:30 am. Family will receive condolences inthe basement of the church at 10:30 am. He was born in Victoria Mines,ON, and in 1945, he married Madeleine (nee Parent) in Windsor. He was a miner at INCO Ltd for 25 years, retiring in 1976 due to his failing health. He was a Roman Catholic member of St Joseph's Church in Chelmsford and a member of the INCO Quarter Century Club. Andre was a great lover of cars and was very proud of every "Ford" product that he owned. Hewas a devoted husband and father and enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren and great-granddaughters. He leaves a rich legacy of love and will be sadly missed but never forgotten. Beloved husband of Madeleine (nee Parent) Arbour of Chelmsford. Loving father of Patricia (husband Joseph Svab) of Windsor, Lucille (husband Dan Sweeny) of Sudbury, and Marcel (wife Anna) of Windsor. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: one sister, Mrs. Clara Ahern of QC; cousins, Dona Arbour, George Arbour, Fred Arbour, Regis Arbour, and Mrs. Louise Breiland, all of Thunder Bay; niece and nephews also survive. Born in Perce, QC, he moved with his parents to the Lakehead in 1922, and received his education in Thunder Bay. He served overseas during WWII. He was a journeyman pipefitter, working for various construction companies throughout the years, and for the past three years hadlived and worked in Dryden. He was a member of the Royal CanadianLegion Branch 5, and Union Local 628 Plumbers and Pipefitters. Survived by his wife Ruth of Dryden; four daughters and sons-in-law: Marge Schmidt of Thunder Bay, Carolyn O'Neill of Thunder Bay, Lorraine Paquette of Vancouver (en route), Debra Spooner of Flin Flon (en route); seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two stepdaughters and four stepsons; brother Albert Arbour, of 502 College St, Thunder Bay; sister Clara Ahern of St Romuald, QC; nieces and nephews also survive. Predeceased byfather Frank, mother Georgina Arbour, brothers Henry, Frank, and Raymond, and sisters Alice and Germain. 15 May 1908 -- Born in Perce, Quebec, Jean-Ashador ARBOUR was the 4th of 15 children of fisher and school custodian Joseph-Tancrede ARBOUR andhis wife Marie-Flore GUILLOT. Ash was born and baptised as Jean-Adjutor ARBOUR; how his name became Ashador or Ashadore is not known. In about 1920, Ashador made the big move from Quebec to Ontario with his parents and siblings, settling in the Thunder Bayarea, then known as the twodistinct communities of Fort William and Port Arthur. In about 1932, hemarried Levina Octavia BONENFANT, who wasfrom the local area. They had 4 children together: Leonard who died in infancy, Lorraine, Ruth, andDonald. In about 1942, the family moved to Sarnia, ON, where Ash and Levina remained and whereAsh was a welder employed at Imperial Oil. On 06 August 1970, at the age of 62, Ash passed away, leaving Levina to witness the death of their daughter Lorraine, as well as the passing of a grandchild and a great-grandchild. On 17 September 2002, at the age of 89, Levina passed away. At the time therehad been 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren born to them.

Mr. Regis Arbour, age 93 years, passed away peacefully at Dawson Court on Tuesday, 7 February 2006. Born on 25April 1912 in Quebec, he was raised and educated in Thunder Bay. He was employed as a custodian with HMCS Griffon, retiring after many years of service. Regis is survived by his only son Robert Allison. He was predeceased by his six brothers: Ash, Union, Homer, Fred, George, and Dona and one sister Louise. Cremation has taken place. As per Regis' wishes, no service will be held. If friends so desire, donations to the Memorial Society of Thunder Bay (316 Talbot St. P7A 1J7) would be greatly appreciated.

Mr. Joseph Donat Arbour, age 85 years a resident of 830 Hartland Street, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital (Port Arthur General Site) on Sunday, 12 December 1999, with his family at his side. Born 31 Jul 1914, in Gaspe, QC, he came here as a young boy. He had worked as a welder in his earlier years withthe mines in Geraldton, then as a welder with Dingwell's Machine Shop, and latterly with themaintenance department of the Port Arthur General Hospital, retiring at theage of 73 years. He served in the Tank Corps with the Royal Canadian Army during WWII in Canada at Camp Borden and overseas in Holland and Germany for 3 years. Donat lovedhishome and camp at Shebandowan and was an avid wood-worker, where he excelled in the making of grandfather clocks. He enjoyed times spent with the family pet Jasmine. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by hisfamily,his wife Bessie, with whom he shared 62 years; his daughters Donalda(Wim) Vonk of Qualicum Beach, BC (at present here) and Marilyn Stevenson of Thunder Bay; granddaughters Sheryl (Dale) Watson and Carolyn Vonk of Grand Cayman Islands and Jennifer Vonk of Thornhill, ON (at present here); and brother Reginald; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Hewas predeceased by his parents, brothers Ash,George, Freddie, Homer, and Union, and sister Louise. Frances was born 25 July 1927, to Fred and Julia Arbour. Fran's deep and abiding Catholic faith and her relationshipwith God wasthe source of the strength, hope, and love she gave to all of those thatturned to herfor wisdom and guidance. She was devoted to her family and friends. We will always miss her walkinginto the cabin Sunday afternoons with her unbeatable homemade goodies. She was a waitress at The Jolly Fisher Restaurant for 30 years where she lovedher work and her customers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, George (Bud) Swanson; and her sister,Flora Jean Watson. Rev. Guy Arbour, a 35-year old Sulpician priest, killed in theair crashat Montego Bay, Jamaica, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edouard Arbour, ofSt Johns, QC. Mr. Arbour is manager of the St Johns branch of the Banque Canadienne Nationale and for many years manager of the Shawinigan branch of the Bank. The priest's mother said that her son, who was a professor of philosophy at the University of Bogota for the last five years, recently came home for a visit. He left for South America on Tuesday of last week travelling by air via New York. Father Arbour is the oldest of four children. He was born at Acton Vale, QC. Rev. Guy Arbour is anephew of J. New Orleans -- In spite of the somewhat convoluted and dry definition provided above, the origin of the term cocktail is surrounded by heated controversy, with advocates of each variantstoutly maintaining the veracity of theirparticular definition.What appears certain is that the word "cocktail" appeared in the second half of the 18th century. Some contend that the term was derived from the tap, or cock, for pouring ale. When the bottom of the barrel was reached, it was called the "cock tail." Others maintain that the word was coined by one of the patrician Carters of Virginia, who while traveling in the countryside was served a fermented drink of poor quality and upbraided the innkeeper, saying, "Hereafter, I shall drink cocktails ofmy own brewing!" Another school attributes the origin of the term to Betsy, a popular Revolutionary War-era barmaid in Hall's Corners, New York, who served a potent drink dubbedBetsy's Bracers by its consumers. A group of these patrons of the tavern managed to steal a number of male pheasants from the detested invading British officers, plucked the tail feathers and attached them to their hats and proceeded to the Hall's Corners tavern for a raucous celebratory party. They toasted Betsy andher bracers with, "Here's to the divine liquor which is as delicious to the palate as the cocks' tails arebeautiful to the eye!" A French officer serving with the American armyresponded with "Vive le cocktail!" Still others say that General GeorgeWashington decorated his hat with cock feathers and that his officersroutinely toasted him with, "Here's to the cock's tail." Of particularinterest to New Orleanians is the tale of the Sazerac, widely held to be the first genuine cocktail and devisedby Antoine-Amedé Peychaud, whohad earlier invented Peychaud's Bitters, a distinctive ingredient of the Sazerac, in Santo Domingo. Fleeing the revolution there at the end of the 18th century, Peychaud opened the Pharmacie Peychaudon RoyalStreet. There he served his Peychaud Bitters-flavored drinks to friends in a coquetier, or eggcup. The coquetier was soon corrupted to "cocktail." Whatever the elusive origin of the word, itis certain that it entered common parlance in this country andEngland by the early 19th century and firmly remains there. It is equally certain that no one is going to agree as to a specificorigin for the term. Of course, the cocktail never would have come to be without the presence of alcoholic, or spirituous, beverages, and they were not available until the dawn of organized agriculture. It is thought that the first alcoholicdrink was palmwine, which originated in Mesopotamia about 2400 BCE. The Babylonians made considerable use of fermented drinks;in writing the earliest known legal text, they included a law regulating drinking houses and taverns. The ancientGreeks were frequent imbibers, and their literature contained numerous warnings against the excessive use of intoxicating drink.Later,the Romans had a separate god of wine, Bacchus, and worshipped him with enthusiastic bouts of drinking. In the history of fermented drink, it is apparent that it was used ecclesiasticallyand socially for many diverse purposes. In the social arena,strong drink has been used to provide courage in battle, to calm feuds, seal pacts and treaties, celebrate festivals and such important events as births, marriages, and the termination of war and to seduce lovers. In medieval Europe, fermented beverages were used both as folk medicine and as preservatives. By 1250, the technique of distillation became widely known throughout Europe, permitting the production of stronger and more convenient alcoholic beverages. Until the early years ofthe 16th century, however, most distilled liquors -- such as brandy -- were created from wineandwere available only to the most affluent segments of society. By 1600, liquor wasa customary part of the regular food rations of Europe's armies and remainedso until well into the 19th century. Around 1650, the Dutch developed gin by distilling grain and the juniper berry, and the new drink quickly made its way to England via soldiers returning from fighting intheLow Countries. In 1690, Parliamentpassednew laws encouraging the distillation and sale of spirits in order to create additional revenuesfor the landed aristocracy. During the 19th century, the abuse of alcohol noted by earlier generations became alarmingly widespread as peopleattempted to cope with the vast socioeconomic upheavals created by theIndustrial Revolution. However, costly wines, liqueurs and distilled potables were expected appurtenances at grand social events. The upper-class after-dinner ritual of gentlemen remainingin the dining room for cigars and port,brandy, or cognac became fixed and persisted well into the 20th century. The widespread use of liquor by both sexes grew increasingly at the close of WWI, an event most historians concur marked the demise of prudish Victorian standards. Alcohol came to beviewedas a convenient and pleasant tool for introducing people of widely differing backgrounds. Invitations to "come for drinks" became part of an importantbonding ritual, and the modern-day cocktailparty was born, quickly becoming a standard social event among all classes but the poorest. So ubiquitous did these gatherings become that specific attire for women wasdesigned: the cocktail dress, the cocktail hat, and the cocktail ring are but three of the best known examples. As thecocktail party proliferated through the 1920s, 1930s,and on, so did the concoction of new and exotic drinks. Although the United States was enmeshed in Prohibition from 16 January 1920, until 8 December1933, the legal ban on the publicsaleofalcoholdid little to curb enthusiasm for the cocktail party in this country and, of course, had little effect abroad. Here, speakeasiesand rum runners proliferated whilenew and exotic drinks were concocted, the Pink Lady, theWardEight,andthe Singapore Sling among them. For these, special glasses and goblets were created; again, the Old-Fashioned glass and the martini goblet are but two well-known examples. New implements and accessories were devised, andthe well-appointed domestic bar included olive and fruit slice dishes as well as accompanying picks.Cocktail shakers, pitchers, stirring spoons, novelty corkscrews, and bottle openers were all expected accessories. The present exhibition celebrates not onlythe relatively short history of the cocktail but also the history of the consumption of fermented beverages from the Late Classical world to the Renaissance and continuing to the present day. Onview are more than 125 objects dating from thethirdcentury to modern times, covering the use of beer and wine before and after the invention of the distilling technique and the subsequent introduction of liquors suchas rum, gin, and whiskey. These objects include drinking vessels in metalandglass,decanters,punch bowls, bottle stands, carafes, pitchers, cocktail shakers, and such diverse bar implements as swizzle sticks, muddlers, bottle openers, corkscrews, and mixing tools. The exhibitionis presented in memory of the legendaryadvertisingcopywriterand London hostess Madeleine E. Andersen (1932-2003) who most definitely relished the numerous cocktail parties she so deftly organized for more than 50 years. Devoted to the martini, Mrs. Andersen frequently recommended thedrinkto her guests statingthat hers were "divinely dry, darling."

20 April 1966 -- Today's person of interest should definitely still be with us and not in his grave in Ontario. John Michael ARBOUR was the youngest of 6 childrenof Napoleon ARBOUR and Julia RIVEST. Very little isknown of John's life, except that he died before his father and motherand no parent ever wishes that. John died on 14 September 1997, and was buried in St Joachim Catholic Cemetery in Windsor, Ontario.
