MRS. ALPHONSE ARBOUR
Waubaushene lost one of its pioneer residents in the death of Mrs. Alphonse Arbour, 1 March. Mrs. Arbour passed away at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W. J. McGuire, Toronto, following a brief illness. Born in Three Rivers, QC, in 1872,she went to Waubaushene when a young girl, and had lived here ever since. She was married to Alphonse Arbour on 31August 1891, in Waubaushene. Mrs. Arbour was a member of St John's Roman Catholic Church. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St John's Church, 3March, by Rev. J. McDonough, SJ, with interment in St John's Cemetery, Waubaushene. Pallbearers were six grandsons. Besides her husband, Mrs. Arbour is survived by five sons: Sid, of Tecumseth; William, Edward, andHenry, of Toronto; and Arthur, ofWaubaushene; and four daughters: Mrs.George Malcolm(Bertha), Collingwood; Mrs. W. J. McGuire (Exena) and Mrs. Kenneth Lewis (Margaret), both of Toronto; and Mrs. N. H. Ward (Victoria), of Stratford.

We would go over there and she would let the kidsplay with them. Lawrence would go through the drawer and take out all the toys and then would find something very simple to play with."

Waubaushene -- 8 May -- A widely known member of a pioneer family in this district, Mrs. Anthony O'Hara, 55, who died suddenly at her home "Bonnie View" Monday, was buried in St John's Cemetery today. Pallbearers were five brothers and a cousin: Edward, William, Henry, Arthur, Sydney, and Ernest "Ty" Arbour. Rev. J. McDonough celebrated requiem mass at St John's Roman Catholic Church. Born in Waubaushene, Mrs. O'Hara, formerly Amanda Arbour, attended schools here. She was the daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Alphonse Arbour, who survive and who last year celebrated theirdiamond wedding anniversary with 10 of their 13 children. Two weeks ago, Mr. and Mrs. O'Hara observed their 33rd wedding anniversary. The result of a stroke, Amanda O'Hara, well-known proprietress of Bonnie View Hotel near Port Severn, passed away at her home, 5 May 1952. Shewas 55-years old. Born Amanda Arbour in Waubaushene, shewas married in1919 to Anthony O'Hara and for many years had worked with him at managing the summer resort hotel. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. O'Hara is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Frances Nimens, Mrs. Reta Whitehead, and Miss Peggy O'Hara; and three sons,Charles, Tom, and Bill. Also surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Arbour, Waubaushene; five brothers, Henry, William, and Edward Arbour of Toronto, Arthur, Waubaushene, and Sid, Tecumseh; and four sisters, Mrs. G. Malcolm, Collingwood, Mrs. N. Ward, Windsor, Mrs. K. Lewis and Mrs. W. McGuire, Toronto. Funeral service was conducted in Waubaushene by Father McDonough, 8 May, with interment in Waubaushene. Pallbearers were cousins, Ernest "Tye" Arbour, andthe five brothers of the deceased. 21 April 1901 -- Born in Waubaushene, Ontario, Marie "Alexina" Alfreda ARBOUR was the 6th of 13 children of my great-grandparents Alphonse ARBOUR and Marie EMOND. This connection makes Aunt Zee my great-great-auntand the sister to my grandmother, Amanda Alexina ARBOUR. Interesting how they both have the name Alexina. Alphonse and Marie must have reallyliked the name. When Zee was 26-years old, she married 27-year old William Joseph McGUIRE on 11 February 1928, in Toronto. Billworked for anoptical company in Toronto for many years while the family lived in a duplex on Wolfrey Avenue, near the Don Zoo. Zee and Bill were blessed with 3 children, one daughter and 2 sons. They are also responsible for 7 grandchildrenand 12 great-grandchildren. Bill died in Toronto on 08 December 1958, at the age of 58. Zee died in Toronto on 30 May 1978, at the age of 77. Both of them were buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill, Ontario.

02 April 1905 -- Born in Waubaushene, ON, Joseph Edouard Wilfred Lorne ARBOUR - known by all as Ted - was the 8th of 13 children of mill worker Alphonse ARBOUR and his wife Marie EMOND, who happen tobe my great-grandparents. Ted married Lillian Johanna CONDON on 31 December 1927, andthey had 5 children in the next 9 years, 3 daughters and 2 sons. Ted was known to work as a laborer for the Sheppard & Gill Lumber Company in1930. While primarily living in Toronto, Ted and Lillianowned a summerand vacation home on Maple Street in Waubaushene. The back of this house was adjacent to the schoolyard at the former St John's Roman Catholic School, attended by many family youngsters. Uncle Ted is remembered as being kind toall the children, including his grandnieces and grandnephews. His grandson Michael recalls two of his favorite sayings as "Holytomat'r cans" and "Sufferin' catfish". Lillian passed away on 20 Jan 1980 and Ted followed her just 2 years later,on 16 Feb 1982. They werebothburied in Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill, ON. This lovely couple is responsible for 29 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren.

GEORGE MALCOLM
A former marine engineer and master steam-fitter in the Collingwood Shipyards for more than a quarter century, died suddenly at his Napier St home in his 67th year. George Malcolm was born in Victoria Harbour in 1905, one of 11 children of the lateMr. and Mrs. John Malcolm. For a number of years he sailed with ships on the Great Lakes as a marine engineer, until joing the steam-fitting department of the Collingwood Shipyards 30 years ago. He was a member of the company's quarter-century club.A member of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Name Soceity,he was an ardent sportsman and rarely missed a hockey or ball game in Collingwood.
He is survived by this wife, the former Bertha Arbour; two daughters: Marion, Mrs. Reg Tyo of Ottawa, and Carol, Mrs. John Kinsey of Milton; two sons, Donald of Toronto and Ted of Burlington; one brother, Frank ofCollingwood; four sisters, Millie,Mrs. Tom Gourlay of Toronto, Marion,Mrs. Dave Evans of Toronto, Grace, Mrs. Bruce Winfield of St Thomas, and Maude, Mrs. Clare Morris of Islington. Art and Rena were married on a Monday morning at 8:30. In those days, Monday was wash day when nearly all homemakers washed their family's clothes. Art's mother-- otherwise known as "Grandma Arbour" -- always strictly adhered to the Monday ritual. As a result, she did not even attendher own son's wedding.

In contrast to Grandma Arbour, Rena's mother made buns for the wedding brunch to celebrate Art and Rena's marriage. Since they were married soearly in the morning, this meant that she awoke in the dark in order to have time for the dough torise.

* Note: Young Reggie tragically died as the result of injuries sufferedwhile swimming in the Georgian Bay shortly before his 14th birthday. He had been swimming at the Waubaushene slip, across from his parents' house, off the government dock. He dove in and hit a rock, causing severe internal injuries. The young man languished in pain as he did not dieimmediately but lived for a day.

Tecumseh voters turned out 72 percent strong Wednesday to landslide SidArbour into office as their mayor for the next two years. Great Demonstration -- A total of 1,233 voters -- the largest number ever to exercise their franchise in the town -- went to the polls in what veteran town residents describe as "the greatest demonstration of democracy in action in the history of Tecumseh." Completely snowed under in the Arbour 719-vote swing were Eugene Morand, who ran second with 355 votes, and the incumbent Mayor Thomas C. Scott, who ran last with a tally of 134.

From Marilyn ARBOUR GOUETT via email on 09 Dec 2010: Just a quick note to let you know of an obit notice I did see in our Toronto Star daily paper yesterday. It was for Marjorie Laurena Marie Bartels. She was the daughter of the late Margaret (Arbour) Lewis and Ken Lewis. Margaret was my fathers sister. We seem to have lost track of some in that family.My mother used to always get a Christmas card from Marjorie's sister Theresa so when my mother passed away we tried to get in touch with herand did not have any luck. I guess she had moved since last Christmas. Idid write to her sister in Guatemala - Sister Joan - because she always sent a lovely letter to mom at Christmas so if I hear from Sister Joan I may find out where she has movedto. Marjorie was in her 75th year - she passed away2 Dec.

St Brigid's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday morning, 25 Aug, was the setting for a pretty wedding when Jean Margaret Vetters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Vetters, became the bride of LS William Stephen Arbour, RCNVR, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Arbour. Father Marshmann officiated. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was gowned in white slipper satin, made on the torso lines. A Mary Stuart headdress caught herfingertip veil. She carried a cascade of red roses and white gladioli.As maid of honor, Wren Dorothy J. Johnstone wore an orchid dress. The bridesmaids, Misses Betty Radcliffe and Marion Pearen, were in lime green similar in style to the bridal gown. All wore matching headdresses and carried cascades of pink roses and mixed flowers. Flt-Sergt John McMullin was groomsman, and ushers were Gordon Arbour, brother of the groom, and LS James Mumford, RCNVR. At a reception at Maloney's Art Gallery, the bride's mother received wearing a dress of pearl grey silk mesh, accented with a corsage of fuscia sweet peas. Also receiving was the groom's mother in a beige two-piece printed dress with corsage of lemon and salmon inned gladioli. For the wedding trip to Detroit and Northern Ontario, the bride donned a dressmaker suit in powder blue shade with brown accessories. The couple will live in Toronto.

Their nephew Peter ARBOUR remembers his Uncle Gord and Aunt Reta: "We would go there most times in the summer. They had a pool in the backyard, and three cousins, too. We didn't interact much becausethey were a bit older than Arlene [his sister] and me. The parents would talk and thekids would swim and have fun in the pool. This is funny: I never said anything about it but Uncle Gord reminded me of Popeye the Sailorman. HaHaHa! I knew he was a sailor because Dad showed me pictures of him onabig ship. Uncle Gord was in the Navy, but he didn't smoke a pipe like Popeye. HaHaHa! Every time wewent there Uncle Gord and Aunt Reta would always have a big smile for us."

According to Deborah RUSE-ARBOUR: When Gord married Reta, they blended their families: his three and her four filled the house with seven children. Also, it was not Gord but his brother Steve who wasin the Navy and it was probably he who wasthe onewho looked like Popeye -- although Steve and Gord looked so much alike it was hard to tell them apart.

Although Don - like all of Bill and Mary's children - drifted apart from his family, he did enjoy returning to his roots. As a youngster, the family spent a great deal of time in Waubaushene. When hebecame a father himself, he tried to pass along alittle taste of what he had experienced. When his son Peter was about 10- or 11-years old, Don invited him and a friend to go to Waubaushene. Peter was very excited for his father to show where he had spent summers and to meet some relatives. The three of them drove up in Don's trusty 1974 Gremlin. All of them slept inthe car next to the water. Although Peter cannot remember who they visited, he does recall have fun fishing and driving around.

His ashes are to be buried here in St. John"s Cemetery in the Spring according to hisson Ross. They will be buried with his son Tom that passed away in 2006. Frank had been in a home in Barrie since early Sept. due to failing health and his wife Theresa is in the same home and not too well. She went into the home in May (2012).

According to cousin Marily (ARBOUR) GOUETT, here is the tale of Tom's sudden death: Tom Arbour apparently was having what they thought to be heart problems and was in the hospital for some tests. TheDr. released him for the weekend and whilehome hewas working on his outboard motor and while testing it had a boating accident. He ended up with a few broken ribs and back in the hospital. He seemed to be coming along ok and was up walking around and just suddenly collapsed. The report indicatedablood clot. This is what his parents told us. How sad, he was a very nice person.
