Notes:

Emelie was only about 18-years old when she married Joseph JEAN. Her father Magloire ARBOUR and John F. LYNETT himself witnessed. Why was Emelie's father present but not her mother? Perhaps her mother was a littleupset with Emelie because she was already pregnant. Leocadie seems to have changed her mind, though, by the time her first grandchild was born, as she became her godmother.

Emelie and Joseph had 14 children, seven daughters and seven sons. In 1890, Joseph owned a farm in Waubaushene on Concession 11, Lot 10. The family was still found in Waubaushene in April 1891, but definitely leftthe area before April 1901.Furthermore, in 1895, their daughter was born in Verner, which is located in northern Ontario, in Nipissing District. It seems as if the family moved there at some point between 1891 and 1895. By 1901, the family was found living in CaldwellTownship in Nipissing District.

After being widowed, Emelie seems to have returned to her family in Simcoe County, where she married for a second time to Charles LaBATT. Charles' origins are unknown.

Emelie was just a tiny little lady and seemingly quite a character. Shesmoked a pipe but was courteous enough to hide it when the priest cameto visit. Emelie died after September 1951, as that is when she attended the anniversary party of her brother Alphonse in Waubaushene.

17 Feb 2009: Finally found a death date for Emelie. Now we will see if we can find an obituary for her.

13 April 1870 -- Alfred-Joseph ARBOUR was another child of my great-great-grandparents Magloire ARBOUR and Leocadie CHARTIER-ROBERT. Alfred was born in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, as the 3rd of 14 children. He was also the first of Magloireand Leocadie's children to be baptized in the new parish church in Ste-Emelie. Around the time Alfred became a teenager, he and his family arrived in Ontariofrom Quebec, settling in theWaubaushene area. It was there that he married 18-year old Mary THERRIEN on 29 December 1890. Alfred and Mary welcomed 13 children into this world, 8 daughters and 5 sons. Over the years, Alfred toiled as a farmer, millhand, and general laborer. He was 69-years old when he died of cancer on 30 May1929, in Waubaushene. Mary passed away on 18 September 1946. They were both buried in St John's Catholic Cemetery in Waubaushene. Alfred and Mary are accountable for 35 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

After their wedding, Merrille and Georgina established their home in Waubaushene, where they raised 11 children, five daughters and six sons. In 1901, the young family rented a three-room house on ¼acre on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. The large household was completely bilingual: both English and French were spokenso all of the children grew up knowing both. However, as many of themleft home to work in the predominately English-speaking workplace, they nearly all forgot their first language. Only Pamela, Alda, Orval, andBud maintained their ability to communicate in French. In 1937, the family purchased their first car, a 1935Studebaker for $700. Their youngestson Bud learned to drive in this car and often drove his parents around visiting family and friends.
Merrille spent most of his life working for the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. In winter, he cut logs in the forest. In summer, he worked in thesaw mill in town. As a young family, they endured hard times and the daily challenges of the era. Their dedication to work did eventually payoff, though. In 1933, at the age of 60, Merrille was able to purchase a farm adjoining the village of Waubaushene.He carried on a mixed farming operation until his retirement in 1948 at the age of 75. He remainedon the farm until 1955. Children of the extended family and their friends fondly remember Merrille'sfarm, where they often played. They also went to pick morels. Taking a tin can with some butter, they would go into the fields,pick the morels, and cook them right there on a little fire. Picking violets at the farm became an annual affair. Easter was also a joyous time when family visited from Toronto. This was usually maple syrup-making time. They also came to hayin the summer.
In 1956, Merrille took up residence in the Beechwood Nursing Home in Penetanguishene. Georgina had been bedridden and paralyzed since experiencing a stroke in 1942 and had been a resident of the homesince 1950. InApril 1956, a large party was heldat the nursing home for Merrille andGeorgina to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. In addition to their 11 children and 37 grandchildren, they also had 20 great-grandchildren at that time. Like his father, Merrille was a laborer who workedhard all of his life, giving up only as old age set in. Merrille and Georgina died within a couple ofmonths of each other. He on 21 January 1957in Penetanguishene and she on 11 April 1957. They were buried next to each other inSt John's Cemetery inWaubaushene.
Merrille and Georgina are remembered by their children as being very good to them and extremely understanding parents.

Dear Sister,
Just a few lines to let you know that we are all well, hoping yous are all the same. Well, Emily I am sending you the picure of our new church, see what you think of it. Our men are all at the camp yet, but I thing they will be coming down about the 1st of March, and Johnny, I think,is going to stop in Byng Inlet to see his brother. We intend to move there in the Spring. If it wasn't for that hewould stop to see yous. Georgiana has a big baby boy, he was born of the 1st of Feb.Mother was over a week ago last Sunday. They are all well at home also. Give our loveto all the family and tell Joseph if he didn't forget his English to write. I can't tell yous much this time.

06 April 1877 -- Born in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, Marie-Caroline ARBOUR was the 7th of 14 children born to my great-great-grandparents Magloire ARBOUR and Leocadie CHARTIER-ROBERT. Her father Magloire was profiled on 30 March. Carrie wasabout 6-years old when her family made the big move from Ste-Emelie to settle in Waubaushene, ON. At 21-years old,she married lumberjack John Alexander WOODS in Waubaushene on 26 December 1898. The young couple settled into their home in Waubaushene and shortly afterward began their family of 8 children, 6 daughters and 2 sons. At some point around 1911,John decided that having 6 children underthe age of 11 was made more difficult with him being away in the bush for so much ofthe time. He then tooka job at the grain elevator in Victoria Harbour, ON, and the family moved into a house on William Street West, just down the street from her parents' house. Carrie still had 6 kids at home when John died of prostate cancer at the age of 48. He hadsuffered for 14 months with "hypertrophy of the prostate" (enlargementof the prostate) and 2 or 3 months with "pyelo-nephritis" (kidney failure) under the care of Dr. D. W. McKENZIE. Carrie was 80-years old whenshe died on 13 January 1958. BothCarrie and John were laid to rest in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Victoria Harbour

From Linda CHARRON via email on 18 Feb 2009: Janet-Diana Arbour was the10th of 14 children born to Magloire Arbour and Leocadie Chartier-Robert dit Bazinet in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, 28 October1882. She was baptised in Ste-Emelie with her uncle Jean Baptiste Chartier-Robert andaunt Rosalie Arbour standing as Godparents. Some documents recorded her name as Marie-Diana. Since her headstone recorded the name "Diana" weassume this was her preferred name. On 20 October 1898, Diana, at theageof 16, was confirmed by Revered Paul Bruches, Archbishop of Montrealwhile visiting at St John's Church for that purpose. Her brothers Oscar and William were also confirmed the same day. At the age of 20 Diana married EdmondBrodeur who was 24 at thetime. Edmond was the son of Jeremy (also knownas Jeremiah) Brodeur (born 1845 in Quebec) and Louise Roberts (born 1847 on the Isle of Gurnsey in England). He was the 3rd born of about 11 children. His brother Albertmarried Elide Arbour, his sisterMary Etta married William Arbour. On 16 June 1891, Edmond was confirmed in St Margaret's Church, Midland, by Reverend John F. McAble, Archbishop of Toronto visiting for just that purpose. There were two Arbourbrothers in Edmond's confirmation class - Peter and Baptiste. Peter Arbour is my great grandfather. The wedding ceremony between Diana and Edmond took place 22 April 1902, in St John's RC Church in Waubaushene. The ceremony was performed byReverend Louis Arthur Barcelo and witnessedbyhisbrother Ernest and her sister Mary-Louise. The couple settled in Waubaushene where their six children were born. A child born in 1906,(Joseph-Edmond Gaston Brodeur) died at the age of 3 months. Thomas Moreau and Willie Martel were askedto be pallbearers. Another son Thomas Gilbert "Sib" Arbour played professional hockey and was coached by his cousin (Ty Arbour) at one time. In 1923 a baby girl was born breech withthe umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Dr. Porter, MD, was unableto revivethe child. She was buried the same day in St John's RC Cemetery. Edmond died in 1955 in Ontario (perhaps close to either Midland orWaubaushene). He is buried in Plot 22W2 in St Margaret's RC Cemetery in Midland. Diana predeceased him in 1952 attheage of 70. She too is buried in St Margaret's RC Cemetery, Plot 22W2 in Midland. Only two of their seven children have been recorded as living to marrying age.

It is situated across the road from Martyrs Shrine, along the Wye River, 4 miles from Victoria Harbour & 4 milesfrom Midland. While they were excavating the ruins, they unearthed many 300-year old relics, as archaeologists worked out a plan to restore Forte-Ste Marie. It stands today & attracts many tourists.From there Oscar worked in Port McNicoll at the Grain Elevator. There the ships came in to load up with grain & deliver it elsewhere."

At theage of 20, Oscar found his life partner and decided to settle down. On02 August 1908, Oscar married 19-year old Marie-Victoria BOYER in Victoria Harbour, ON, where they also made theirhome. In fact, the home still stands today. According to one of their grandsons, "you can still seethe Arbour home in Victoria Harbour, Ontario, on Google Earth Street view. The address is 397 William St. It is brownish with a blue metal roof." Oscar and Victoria proceeded to welcome 12 children into this home over a 22-year span, 5 daughtersand7 sons. As a young man, Oscar toiled as a laborerof various kinds, making his mark later in life. Waubaushene -- 8 May -- A widely known member of a pioneer family in this district, Mrs. Anthony O'Hara, 55, who died suddenly at her home "Bonnie View" Monday, was buried in St John's Cemetery today. Pallbearers were five brothers and a cousin: Edward, William, Henry, Arthur, Sydney, and Ernest "Ty" Arbour. Rev. J. McDonough celebrated requiem mass at St John's Roman Catholic Church. Born in Waubaushene, Mrs. O'Hara, formerly Amanda Arbour, attended schools here. She was the daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Alphonse Arbour, who survive and who last year celebrated theirdiamond wedding anniversary with 10 of their 13 children. Two weeks ago, Mr. and Mrs. O'Hara observed their 33rd wedding anniversary. The result of a stroke, Amanda O'Hara, well-known proprietress of Bonnie View Hotel near Port Severn, passed away at her home, 5 May 1952. Shewas 55-years old. Born Amanda Arbour in Waubaushene, shewas married in1919 to Anthony O'Hara and for many years had worked with him at managing the summer resort hotel. She was a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Mrs. O'Hara is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Frances Nimens, Mrs. Reta Whitehead, and Miss Peggy O'Hara; and three sons,Charles, Tom, and Bill. Also surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Arbour, Waubaushene; five brothers, Henry, William, and Edward Arbour of Toronto, Arthur, Waubaushene, and Sid, Tecumseh; and four sisters, Mrs. G. Malcolm, Collingwood, Mrs. N. Ward, Windsor, Mrs. K. Lewis and Mrs. W. McGuire, Toronto. Funeral service was conducted in Waubaushene by Father McDonough, 8 May, with interment in Waubaushene. Pallbearers were cousins, Ernest "Tye" Arbour, andthe five brothers of the deceased. Relatives and friends attending the service came from Tecumseh,Windsor, Wayne, MI, Homestead, PA, Toronto, and Collingwood.

21 April 1901 -- Born in Waubaushene, Ontario, Marie "Alexina" Alfreda ARBOUR was the 6th of 13 children of my great-grandparents Alphonse ARBOUR and Marie EMOND. This connection makes Aunt Zee my great-great-auntand the sister to my grandmother, Amanda Alexina ARBOUR. Interesting how they both have the name Alexina. Alphonse and Marie must have reallyliked the name. When Zee was 26-years old, she married 27-year old William Joseph McGUIRE on 11 February 1928, in Toronto. Billworked for anoptical company in Toronto for many years while the family lived in a duplex on Wolfrey Avenue, near the Don Zoo. Zee and Bill were blessed with 3 children, one daughter and 2 sons. They are also responsible for 7 grandchildrenand 12 great-grandchildren. Bill died in Toronto on 08 December 1958, at the age of 58. Zee died in Toronto on 30 May 1978, at the age of 77. Both of them were buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Thornhill, Ontario.

A former marine engineer and master steam-fitter in the Collingwood Shipyards for more than a quarter century, died suddenly at his Napier St home in his 67th year. George Malcolm was born in Victoria Harbour in 1905, one of 11 children of the lateMr. and Mrs. John Malcolm. For a number of years he sailed with ships on the Great Lakes as a marine engineer, until joing the steam-fitting department of the Collingwood Shipyards 30 years ago. He was a member of the company's quarter-century club.A member of St Mary's Roman Catholic Church and the Holy Name Soceity,he was an ardent sportsman and rarely missed a hockey or ball game in Collingwood.

Art's mother-- otherwise known as "Grandma Arbour" -- always strictly adhered to the Monday ritual. As a result, she did not even attendher own son's wedding.

In contrast to Grandma Arbour, Rena's mother made buns for the wedding brunch to celebrate Art and Rena's marriage. Since they were married soearly in the morning, this meant that she awoke in the dark in order to have time for the dough torise.

Great Demonstration -- A total of 1,233 voters -- the largest number ever to exercise their franchise in the town -- went to the polls in what veteran town residents describe as "the greatest demonstration of democracy in action in the history of Tecumseh." Completely snowed under in the Arbour 719-vote swing were Eugene Morand, who ran second with 355 votes, and the incumbent Mayor Thomas C. Scott, who ran last with a tally of 134.

It was for Marjorie Laurena Marie Bartels. She was the daughter of the late Margaret (Arbour) Lewis and Ken Lewis. Margaret was my fathers sister. We seem to have lost track of some in that family.My mother used to always get a Christmas card from Marjorie's sister Theresa so when my mother passed away we tried to get in touch with herand did not have any luck. I guess she had moved since last Christmas. Idid write to her sister in Guatemala - Sister Joan - because she always sent a lovely letter to mom at Christmas so if I hear from Sister Joan I may find out where she has movedto. At the age of 15, young Ernest decided he wanted to become an NHL hockey player. He began his career by playing for an amateur team in Midland. His rough and tough playing style earned him the nickname "Ty" from baseball's caustic Ty COBB. For the rest of his life, he was known by his Ty moniker. After Midland, Ty played for a team in Hamilton for two years. During WWI, Ty's country required his services. He was drafted bythe Canadian Expeditionary Forces while at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, on 28 May 1918, just three weeks after his younger brother enlisted.Private ARBOUR became a soldier in the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Central Ontario Regiment. He also served with the 8th Canadian Battalion and "O" Wing CCC, both inEngland, perhaps asa sniper. Ty was discharged upon demobilzation on 7 August 1919. Upon return from the War, Ty was recruited by Midland and Port Colborne. It was there in Port Colborne that Ty fell in love with a young woman he dsired to marry. Shortly after Frankie entered his life, Ty got the first big break of his hockey career. He was signed by the Brandon, Manitoba, team where he got plenty of ice time in his three years with them. His rising star then got noticed by Vancouver and Ty went there for twoseasons. This move was followed by a move to Pittsburgh before transitioning to Chicago. His years with the Blackhawks were some of his best as a player and for his finances as a family man. By this time, Ty and Frankie had two children and decided toestablish a homestead for their family. Ty bought a 250-acre farm outside Waubaushene on Duck Bay Road. His farm on what was actually the old North River Road became a prominent landmark. On 12 November 1931, Ty played for the Blackhawks in the first game ever in the new Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. His younger brother Jack was on the opposing team. The Blackhawks won 2-1. This was the last season Ty played in the NHL. For the next several years, Ty coached a variety of teams around SimcoeCounty. Eventually decided to hang up his skates and devote most of hisenergies to being a farmer, although he never could get away from the excitement of the game and followed minor hockey for the remainderof his life. He became known as "theoracle of the minor league hockey set." Ty made any occasion a party and loved to tell stories. Folks were alsoknown to joke about his baldhead, even when he wasa young man.

On 26 Oct 1926, Ty entered the US via the port of Buffalo, NY. He was bound for the Pittsburgh Hockey Club in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was to play hockey for 6 months. He was noted as being 5'6" witha medium complexion, brown hair, and browneyes. He had $15 in his pocket.

A veteran of the Great War, Ty was the older brother of Jack who had a similar, though slightly more successful, career. He was in the services from 1915 to 1918, after which he pursued a hockey career out West, moving from Brandon to Edmonton and,finally, out to Vancouver to play for the local Maroons. Vancouver sold Ty to Pittsburgh during the Piratesfirst NHL season, and early the next season he was involved in a three-way deal that saw him go to Chicago, Bert McCaffery to Pittsburgh, andEddie Rodden of Chicago to Toronto. He spent all of the next four years with the Hawks, though the team struggled on the ice and at the gate.Ty finished his career in the minors, playing two years in the IHL andfinishing with the Edmonton Eskimos.

Buffalo, 31 Oct -- Ernest J. (Ty) Arbour, veteran left winger and center, who finished the 1931-1932 season with the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets, has been invited to join the Bison squad and may pivot the second or third line this season. Arbour is ashifty, aggressive forward with a vast amount of experience to call upon, and Manager Nighbor believes he would prove a valuable addition to the localranks. Arbour is not unknownto Peace Bridge fans, as he proved a prime favorite with them as a member of the Chicago Black Hawks, when the latter club used the arena as its home rink during the latter part of the 1928-1929 season. He was traded later to Pittsburgh in the National League and remained in the Smoky City when the Yellow Jackets entered the International loop. When the Pittsburgh team disbanded, Arbour automatically became a free agent.

Professional Hockey Player. A native of Waubaushene, Ontario, he playedat the position of Left Wing for a total of six seasons (1926 to 1931)in the National Hockey League. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Blackhawks. His totalNHL career consisted of 209 games played, 56 points, 28 goals, 28 assists, and 112 penalties in minutes. Known affectionately as Ty by his fans, he was considered a fine upstanding player but his NHL career was often overshadowed by that of his brothers Amos and Jack who were also professional hockey players in their own right. Besides the NHL,he also had a successful career playing in the minors. His honours in the minors included being named a member of the WCHL 2nd-All Star Team in 1922, and winning the Allan Cup with the Elks in 1920. Atthe outbreak of World War I, Arbour put his career on hold and joined the army and spent three years serving his country as a sniper. After retiring from hockey in 1934, he bought up 250 acres of farmland in the area of Port Severn, Ontario,and raised cattle. He later sold his farmandretired to his birthplace of Waubaushene, where he lived until his death at the age of 82.
Ernest "Ty" Arbour is a long forgotten about hockey player having played way back in the 1920s with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL. In total the Waubaushene, Ontario nativeplayed in 207 NHL contests, providing a bit of offense with 28 goals and 56 points inhis career. He added 2 goals in 11 Stanley Cup games.

Like his brother Jack, Arbour made a name for himself out west. He was a solid scoring winger for the Edmonton Eskimos of the WCHL and later the Vancouver Maroons. When that league folded he, like somany those great Western players, headed east to the NHL.

After his NHL career came to an end, Arbour briefly returned to Edmonton to continue playing hockey. He would ultimately return home to Waubaushene where he bought 250 acres of farmland. He raised cattle and harvested hay until he sold the farm later in life.

Like his older brother Ty, Jack also fought in WWII and played professional hockey. Jack enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on 8 May 1918 while at Kingston, Ontario. Private ARBOUR became a gunner in the 72nd Queen's Battery. Uponreturn from the War, Jack played with the Detroit Red Wings for a number of years. This was followed by some time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, including thefirst game ever in the new Maple Leaf Gardens on 12 November 1931. This game was played against hisbrother Ty on the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks won 2-1. After retiring from hockey and at some point prior to his brother's death in October 1951, Jack moved to Calgary, Alberta. He ran the curling rink there.

Twenty years of pro hockey saw Jack get into the NHL for just 47 total games over two seasons, with first Detroit and then Toronto. Jack was astar in Western Canada with Calgary in the early 1920s until he was sold to the Detroit Cougars prior to the start of the 1926-27 season. He produced five points and 46 penalty minutes with the first-year franchise, but the team didn't make the playoffs and he found himself in the minors with the Detroit Olympic the next year. At this point, he was traded from Detroit to Toronto for Sailor Herberts, one of the bigger deals of the time, but he lasted only ten games with the Maple Leafs beforebeing demoted to the Can-Pro league. Although Jack never made it back to the NHL, he did play another decade, first with the old Windsor Bulldogs of the International league and later in the Pacific Coast league.He retired in 1939.

Windsor, ON -- 12 Dec -- Jack Arbour, veteran defense player of WindsorBulldogs, tonight became manager of the team in place of the deposed Herb Mitchell. Mitchell was relieved of his managerial duties at a meeting of the directors. The action followed differences between Mitchell and the club directorate, in the opinion of observers. Mitchell was starting his sixth season as manager of the club. Arbour hails from Waubaushene, ON, and made his professional debut with Calgary inthe old Western Canada League in the season of 1921-1922. Later he was with Seattle in the Pacific Coast League.

Leona,known to many as Lena, is predeceased by her husband Edward (1963), her oldest son Edward (2004), and a granddaughter, Suzanne (1976). She is survived by a large and loving family including her children, Wayne (Gail), Mary Lou, Robert (Virginia) and Anne Sprague (Douglas), and daughter-in-law, Nancy. Leona was born on 11 August 1914, in Waubaushene, Ontario, the youngest of Marie (Therrion) and Alfred Arbour's 11 children. Raised in an idyllic rural community in NorthernOntario, she grew upamong the joys and simplicities of farm life from which she derived many entertaining stories to share in later years. As a teen, Leona thrilled to the robust competition between her two NHL-playing brothers often pittedagainst one another when theirteams played at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. At the time of her death, the youngest Arbour was predeceased by all of her siblings, Fred Arbour, Emily Lacroix, Ernest "Ty" Arbour, Jack Arbour, Ida "Ede" Hickey,Edna Davis, Alsime "Al" Handy, Agnes"Gig" Middleton, William Arbour, and Mae Boyleau. Along with her husband, young family, nearby brothers and sisters and many in-laws, Leona spent someof her happiest years in Toronto as a young bride and mother. In 1953, after a relatively shortstint in St. Lambert, Quebec, the O'Reillys embraced Windsor as their new community and became particularly intertwined with life at AssumptionHigh School. In the '50's and early '60's, Leona was appreciated not only as a varsity sports fan but,more importantly, as the launder of team uniforms. Alongwith her husband, who led the school's Dad's Club, sheforged a happy alliance with the Assumption family. In 1963, upon the death of her husband Edward, Leona was left with a young family toraise. With fierce independence and a sense of resolve, trademarks of her long life, she embraced the role of single parent. In particular, Leona never lost sight of her commitment to the education of her three boys and two girls, an achievement from whichshe derived great pride when thejob was done. Self-sacrifice and hard work were the hallmarks of her life and, in many ways, Leona was well ahead of her time in other lifestylechoices. Long before the 100-Mile Diet she fostered her good healthwithlocally grown produce. A child of the Depression, she managed to live exceptionally well within hermeans, admonishing those who spent what they didn't have. And she handled all of this with witty observationsof her family's escapades. During thosemany years as the family matriarch, Leona also personified the role of traditional grandmother. She knit in winter, picked berries in summer, preserved in thefall, and baked all year round, all to ensure that the larder was full for her growing family. She made special occasions just that and never shirked from the day-to-day responsibilities of life. Through this and so much more, she continually exhibited her capacity to get the job done. In fact, a Windsor Star photographer once capturedherin an inspirational pose shovelling her Partington Avenue driveway when she was well into her eighties. She expected no less of herself. Joseph Alphonse Donald Arbour was the 4th of 11 children born to Merrill Arbour and Georgian Bazinet in Waubaushene, Ontario, 4 Sep 1904. His baptism likely took place at St John's RC Church in Waubaushene, performed by Reverend Louis ArthurBarceloon 18 Sep 1904 with records being sent to St Margaret's RC Church in Midland, Ontario. Standing as Godparents were the infant's uncle Alphonse and aunt Marie (Emond) Arbour. Although named for his Godfather, Alphonse, he preferred togo by the name"Donald" or "Don" and in his later life "Dorman." At the age of twenty-nine, on 27 Dec 1933, in Pro-Cathedral in North Bay, ON, Dorman married Marie Madore, daughter of John Alexander Madore and Elizabeth Perreault.Witnesses were Gilbert Arbour, likely Dorman's brother and Mildred Madore, perhaps Marie's sister. The couple made their home in different places like Port Dalhousie, ON (April 1941), and Port Colbourne, ON (April 1956 - 1999), where Don and Marie raisedtheir one known child, Mary-Lou. To their credit they had several grandchildren and even more great grandchildren. Like many of the Arbours, Dorman worked on the Great Lake Freighters as a Chief Engineer. Both Dorman and Marie lived a longlife. Marie died at the age of 90 in2001, and Dorman passed away 1 May 2005, in his 101st year.

The St Lawrence River in the immediate vicinity of Brockville had its first marine fire, involving a vessel of importance in the lake trade, in more than a quarter of a century when the tug "Muscallonge," out of Montreal Friday morning destined forPort Credit and towing the small tug"Ajax" and the barge "Bruce Hudson," loaded with crude oil, was consumed on the beach of the Canadian shore aboutone and half miles east of the town this morning. The Captain and crew of 10 men were saved from the burning craft which ignited from an unknown cause in midstream almostopposite the Ontario hospital property. Captain S. Pollock and family, of Dorval,QC.The boat came to a stop with its prow approximately 20 feet distant form the rocky shore-line and in the interval between the discovery of the fire and the beaching of the boat, all of the crew, withthe exceptionof the captain and chief engineer, Dorman Arbour, of Waubaushene, ON, clambered to safety aboard the "Ajax" which followed the "Muscallonge" to shore with its bow tight against the stern of the burning boat at thestarboard side.
One Jumped to Safety. One member of the crew jumped overboard and was picked up by Cleon Price and Bob Wygant, Brockville, who had rushed to the scene with other residents of the summer colony in that vicinity when the signals of distress and criesfor help were heard from the river and launched a rowboat from a dock.
Could Give No Aid. The Brockville fire department was notified by telephone of the outbreak aboard the boat and the platoon on duty at the time responded with apparatus, followed by Fire Chief John Hattley and members of the police department. Owing to the topographical nature of thesurroundings, the heavy fire-fighting equipment could not be taken sufficiently close to the burning boat to be ofany assistance. Mayor Comstock was at the scene shortly after the alarm sounded and endeavored tosecure assistance from Morristown, his plan being to enlist the service of the ferry boat on which the LaFrance pumper might have been carried to the scene. Unfortunately Morristown could not be reached by telephone at that hourand nothing could bedone to save the craft. After assisting in the rescue of the crew from the Muscallonge, the Ajax and Bruce Hudson stood by until nearly daylight, while some of the rescued crew were brought to Brockville in a motorboat. An American patrol boat cruisedabout the scene for a short time after the fire broke out. The vivid reflection sent up by the flames from the boat, which was 143 feet in length and one of the largest tugs plying the Great Lakes, was sween on Barriefield Hill, just east of Kingston, about 12:30 am by a motoring party who were traveling eastward and who broke their journey for hours to watch the flames consume the craft. Hundreds of others, including people from Brockville, Maitland, Prescott, North Augusta, and many summercampers were attracted to the scene and a considerable number remaineduntil after dawn watching the spectacular sight.
Members of the Crew. In addition to Captain Ahearn and Chief Engineer Arbour, the crew of the Muscallonge consisted of T. Bell, Midland, second engineer; Gideon Deschamps, Beauharnais, mate; Sid Smith, Toronto, wheelsman; Jerry Henry, Toronto, oiler; Stanley Wilson, Goderich, fireman; C. Brodeau, Waubaushene, fireman; Hugh Lawson, Toronto, cook; C. Hartley, Port Dalhousie, deckhand. The burned vessel, as well as the other tug and barge, belonged to the Lloyds Refinery Company, Port Credit, and the three left Montreal about six o'clock Friday morning, heading forPort Credit. All went well andthe boats were running with a stiff easterly wind up the river when the fire was discovered shortly after midnight today. The blaze started, it isbelieved, in the boiler room and spread rapidly the length and breadth of the boat, which was entirely of wood construction. Its steam boiler was fitted to burn fuel oil and 9,000 gallons of the crude substance were contained in its tanks amidships. The fire spread with such rapidity that it was impossible for the crew to reach the lifeboats and the Ajax immediately went to the rescue. Captain Ahearn was the last to leave the vessel and was given much deserved credit for successfully beaching the boat after it had ignited in midstream. When the distress signals were sounded by the boat's whistle and cries of the crew for assistance were heard ashore, cottagers alongthe waterfront turned on electric and flashlights and lent what aidthey could. Captain Ahearn and Engineer Arbour were landed ashore and talked briefly with Mayor Comstock and Fire Chief Hartley before being given coffee and a lunch at a cottage nearby. To a representative of the Recorder and Times at the scene Captain Ahearn stated that all of the crew had been accounted for but none of the personal effects of the men had been saved so quickly did the disastrous fire spread.
Oil Ignites in Hull. Less than an hour after the outbreak the superstructure of the craft had been consumed and 20 minutes later, at 1:35 o'clock, the first roar of the igniting oil contained in the tug's tanks was noted. It was not of an explosivenature, but rocked the craft and sent the hundreds of spectators scurrying for safety in either direction along the high shore. Cottagers endeavored to protect their property as much as possible from the myriad of sparks which floatedhigh in the airwestward. At 2:40 o'clock there was a strong roar as the gas emanatingfrom the oil in the tanks through vent pipes rising above the forward deck of the craft which was enveloped in flames ignited apparently under strong pressure. Rain commencedto fall heavily at 2:50 o'clock and continued for several minutes thus reducing the hazard of the fire spreading to property along the shore, particularly to a cottage boathouse onthe Wetherell property not 30 feet distant from the tug. The anchor fellout of the Muscallonge at 3:10 o'clock into the river and shortly afterward the fire reached its greatest intensity. All of the superstructure had been consumed while above the flames and through thebillowing smoke could plainly be seen the aluminum and black funnel and the exposedboiler and machinery. The smoke rapidly grew in density and assumed a coal-black hue as the oil in the tanks was consumed. At intervals therewere explosions of a mild nature within the boat's hull which wasbeinggradually reduced to cinders. Against the intense clouds of black smoke over the burning ship, which floated westward in a north westerly direction across the town, the metal funnel of the boat gradually assumed a bright red colour. Flames gushed from its top and at times the spoutsof fire were as bright as vivid lightning. At 4:47 o'clock the funnel collapsed and fell into the river to the east of the boat with a hissing roar. The flames continued to soar skyward and the Muscallongewasreducedto nothing but a skeleton, its gaping sides feeding the fire right down to the waterline.
Tanks Explode. At 5:30 o' clock the four tanks within the hull explodedalmost simultaneously sending flames 80 feet into the air and scattering fire into the grass and brush along the shore for a distance of approximately 1,000 feet westward. The shock practically obliterated the remains of the vessel. The fire department was again summoned to the scene and prevented any property damage. The Muscallonge was formerly ownedby the Sim-Mac Line and had plied the St Lawrence and Great Lakes foryears. It was a powerful vessel, housing a wealth of machinery, and the loss will mount to many thousands of dollars. It is understood the vessel was insured. Captain Ahearn is well known in Brockville having formerly been stationed here while in command of the tug "Chatson", owned bythe J.P. Porter Company, St Catharines, engaged in widening and deepening the channel in the Brockville Narrows. The tug "Ajax" is commanded by William Miner, of Burlington, and the barge "Bruce Hudson" by CaptainClarence McKellar of Sarnia. The Department of Marine and Fisheries registry of Canadian steam vessels states that the Muscallonge was builtat Port Huron, MI. In 1896. Its port of registry was Montrealand it measured 128 feet in length by 24 feet and five inches in breadth. Its gross tonnage was 360 and registered tonnage 245.

On 31 Oct 1945, Dorman sailed aboard the SS Joan Virginia, bound from Port Credit, ON, to Buffalo, NY. Employed as the 1st Engineer, he evidently had been part of the ship's crew for some time, as this was not hisfirst voyage with her.

On 13 Nov 1945, Dorman repeated the aforementioned voyage.

On 05 Jul 1960, Dorman and Marie left Montreal, QC, and sailed tourist class aboard the Empress of England, owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. They sailed to Liverpool, England, and intended to stay inLondon for a week at Berner's Hotel.

As he grew up, this William became known as "Wim" because of the proliferation of Williams in the ARBOUR family. Wim was playing hockey in Hamilton, Ontario, when he met the woman of his dreams. Wim was an engineer on a lake boat for a time before moving north to South Porcupine, Ontario, in Cochrane County. There he worked at the Dome Gold Mine. After a serious injury at the mine, he moved to Hamilton, where he opened a business installing commercial heating installations, which he operateduntil his retirement.

On 16 Mar 1939, Bill travelled to the US via the port of Niagara Falls.NY. Although he had no specific plans, he did intend to look for work and housing. He was noted to be 5'7" with a medium complexion, black hair, and brown eyes. He carried $35 with him.

Loving Grandpa of Paula (Mario LaPorta), Erin (Judson Teeft), Michelle (Bill Marriott), Blake, Ashley, and the late Shannon (David T. Shaw). In the 1950s, he supported the Hamilton Police Minor Sports Association, underthe direction of his cousin Bernie Arbour and sponsored the "ArbourEagles" for several years. He was much loved by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren for his playfulness, teasing, and piggyback rides. He was a lifetime member of Vic Tanny's until they went brankrupt, at whichtime he joined Sir Allan MacNabRecreation Centre, and remained a regular swimmer there until March of this year. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends at the pool. Visitation at the P. X. Dermody Funeral Home, 7 East Avenue South,on Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm with vigilprayers at 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Regina Mundi Catholic Church on Wednesday, 4 June, at 10 am. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Leonard went sailing on the Great Lakes at the age of 14. By taking marine engineering courses in the winter when the boats were laid up, he earned his 2nd Class Marine Engineers Certificate. Leonardremained as engineering jobs in and aroundOntariountil he joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1942 as a Petty Officer. Her served on the destroyer "Restigouche" on convoy duty in the North Atlantic from Halifax to England for three years, rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In1945, Leonard married an American farm girl from Michigan and they operated a dairy farm there for two years. Theyhad one daughter while in Michigan before moving their family to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where Leonard obtained employment as an engineer with the Wisconsin Public Utilities Commission, where he remained until his retirement. Leonard and Mary still live in Green Bay, but during winters, they sun themselves in North Fort Myers, Florida.

On 27 Apr 1942, Leonard travelled to the US via the port of Niagara Falls, NY, for a personal leave of 24 hours. Few other details were noted on his arrival manifest.

Upon entering the US at Detroit, MI, on 25 Mar 1946, Leonard was noted as 5'3" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and hazel eyes. He had $150 in his pocket. He claimed to be a farmer who was moving from his father's home in Waubaushene, ON, to permanently reside with his wife on RR1 in Rock, MI.

Leonard B. Arbour, 92, Green Bay, passed away Sunday, 9 Oct 2005, at a local hospital. Leonard was born 24 June 1913, in Waubaushene, Ontario,Canada, to the late Merrill and Georgina (Bazinet) Arbour. He worked eight years sailing the GreatLakes for the Canadian Steamship Lines and later was employed as a Stationary Engineer at St Augustine's Seminary in Toronto, Ontario. Prior to serving in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Petty Officer during WWII, he was employed at munitions plants in Niagara Falls and Noble, Ontario. Len married the former Mary J. Vermote on 27 Nov 1945, at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Perkins, MI. They moved to Green Bay in 1948. He was a member of Annunciation Church where he served as an usher and was a member of the Church and Grounds MaintenanceCommittee. He was employed by Public Service Corporation until his retirement in 1977. Since his retirement Len enjoyed traveling, swimming, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He and his wife wintered in North FtMyers, FL. Len fathered and lovingly provided for a large family. He was never happier than when he was sitting in his living room surroundedby his 11 children and playing with his grandchildren who ran to find him as soon as they walked through the door. From tractor rides, to walks to the ice cream store, to playing in the parkthey always knew they would have fun with grandpa. Hecould never walk by a card game without joining in and he made sure all of his children knew how to play euchre. Len will be remembered by familyand friends in so many ways especially for his devotion and dedication to his family. We will miss his love and laughter, but most of all his sense of humor. It is with deep sorrow that he has left us, but a great comfort knowing he is where he wantsto be with the Lord Jesus whom he deeply loved. He is survived by his wife, Mary; theirchildren and their spouses, Mary Ellen and Frank Berg,Richfield, MN; Georgina and Richard Leanna, Green Bay; Diane and Harland Matthews, Green Bay; Fred and Shirley Arbour, Fridley, MN; Pauline and Bill Shook, Sault Ste. She was headed to 2 Main Street, Bangor Down. The strange thing is that by this time, Cecilia should have already been married yet she was reported as being single and still used the ARBOUR surname. On 06 Sep 1935, Cecilia sailed from Belfast, Ireland, aboard the "Athenia." She arrived in Quebec City, QC, on 15 Sep 1935, and was returning to her sister Alma's house at 1 Berkely St, Toronto, ON. Prior to leaving, Cecilia was issued passport #108333 in Ottawao, ON, on 10 Aug 1935.Again, the strange thing is that by this time, Cecilia should have already been married yet she was reported as being single and still used the ARBOUR surname. Beloved wife of the late Arnold Pullen. Devoted and cherished mother of 7 children, Janet (Ron) Rouxel, Julie (John) Brittain, Linda (the late Ron Marshall), Maryann (Ken) Medland, Rosalie (Phil) Harwood, Michael (Birgit) Pullen, and Darlene (Guy) Mantini. Mom delighted in her 13 grandchildren, Paul, Laura, Simon, Melisa, Leslie, Michelle, Derek, Matthew, Julia, Nicole, Marcel, Marc, and Kristine all who loved her very much. Bud remained on his parents' farm until age 19. In 1940, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in Hamilton, Ontario. On August 1941, he graduated as a pilot and on 31 August he was shipped overseas,where he was on flying duty with the Air Force until August 1944, when he returned toCanada. After the War, Bud and Eileen returned to Ontario, where Bud continued as a pilot in the training commanduntil February 1945, when hewas discharged. Bud then worked as a Settlement Officer with the Veterans' Land Act and as a Credit Advisor with the Farm Credit Corporation until 1979. He then opened a tree nursery and garden center in Shanty Bay, Ontario, just outside Barrie, on the western shore of Lake Simcoe. After his discharge, Bud also tookthe time to obtain a bachelor of ArtsDegree in Social Science at York University in Toronto. He also becamean Accredited Appraiser of the Canada Institute, specializing in ruralproperty valuations. In 1979, he established an appraisal business working from his farm. In 1998, he closed his garden center and appraisal business. He is now developing "Arbourwood Estates" on his 180-acre tree farm, creating a residential subdivision on 100 home lots.

BERNIE ARBOUR HONORED
Hamilton's Citizen of the Year is a 45-year old policeman who has helped more than 18,000 boys through police minor baseball and hockey leagues. Sgt Bernard (Bernie) Arbour, honored last night by theAdvertising and Sales Blub of Hamilton, has been directing the Police Minor Sports Association since its inception in 1948. During that time, 18,164 boys have taken aprt in baseball and hockey leagues and 3,196 adults have beeninvolved as coaches and managers. Sgt Arbour has known each of them personally. Not one has been a statistic. When a city boy lost an eye in a baseball accident in 1965, Sgt Arbour arranged for hockey star GordieHowe to visit the boy at this home. It was typical of the interest SgtArbour took ineach of his boys. ManyBecame Professionals -- Many boyswho began in Hamilton minor police league went on to become professional athletes, among them National Hockey League stars Harry Howell, Murray Oliver, Ian Cushenan, and John Miszuk. Atleast 25 members of the Hamilton police force once played under Sgt Arbour on police minor teams. Of the present 19 police cadets, seven participated in the police minorprogram.

Nicest piece of news to come into the sports department in a long time was the first word that Bernie Arbour, who has spent most of his adult life working with kids, had been named Hamilton's Citizen-of-the-Year. The news was taken as a sortof "victory for our side," because Bernie is a familiar figure in the sports office, one of the most dedicated anddeeply-respected men anywhere in sport. Because the police minors havebeen a phase of my sports beat and because I've worked closely with Bernie on many of his athletic enterprises, Bob Hanley turned his space over to me today, for reflections and a round-up of tributes. In the long list of police men since Bill Friday, Sr., who have provided organized sport for boys in this community, none worked harder at the job, nonewas better lovedby the kids than Bernie Arbour. He was and is the father image to a lot of young fellows who didn't have fathers, and he was sports-father to a lot of young fellows whomade it big with the pros --Harry Howell, Murray Oliver, Ron Murphy, Frank Consentino, Russ Jackson, and so many more. Guided 18,000 -- Bernie has watched more than 18,000 youngsters pass through the police minors since the parent Hamilton Police Amateur Athletic Association sponsorship began 10 years ago. Some made it to the top in sports, others are trying to pass on to anothergeneration, as today's coaches, some of the things they learned in Bernie's vast set-up. Still othershave used the police minors' teachings of sportsmanship and teamwork as foundation for their business endeavors. If you were to ask Bernie what has been most gratifying for him, he would tell you that it has been the low incidence of crimeamong youngsters who played in the police minors. Bernie "A Giant" -- Following last night's announcement by the Ad and Sales Club, I contacted some of Bernie's superior officers, fellow-workers, and Police Minor graduates. Here are just a few of the tributes: Chief Constable Leonard G. Lawrence: "They say nobody stands taller than when he stoops to help a child. That makes Bernie Arbour a giant. The great work he has been doing is emphasized by the fact that very few of the policeminor graduates have everbeen in serious trouble." Murray Oliver: "He's one of the finest people I ever met. He and the other fellows in the police minors were very good to me." Ron Howell: "There aren't enough hoursin a day to suit Bernie Arbour. He had his heart aches in the early days because of interference by parents, but he refused to quit. I'm very thankful for what Bernie and the organization did for me.He never turned anyone aside." Bob Hanley: "Bernie is a guy who hasthe patience and dedication to do a lotof things for kids that the rest of us wish we were able to do." The Hamilton Redbirds' demands for a new baseball facility or extensiverenovations to Bernie Arbour Stadium received the usual negative support frm Hamilton city hall that minor baseball and hockey teams have received for years. Minor hockey teamsdesperately scrambled for out-of-town ice while Copps Coliseum sits virtually vacant awaiting the next tractor pull or chess tournament. Bernie ArbourStadium, like Copps Coliseum, is rarely used by the tens of thousands of children who play minor sports, even though their parents' taxes built and maintain both facilities. Bernie Arbour Stadium wasnamed after the man who helped found minorsports in Hamilton 20 years ago and dedicated his life to "keeping kids in sports and off the streets."Thousands of Hamilton athletes have spent their winters in hockey rinks and summers in ball diamonds, thanks to Bernie Arbour and hundreds of volunteers who felt our kids were worth spending time with. The sports facilities our kids use today are the same as police minor leagues used three decades ago. How ironic that facilities honoring Vic Copps and Bernie Arbour, legends in Hamilton sports for working with our youth, are not available for our young athletestoday while our politicians prefer to let them sit idle or run down. THE STORY: Arbour was a Second World War veteran before he joined the Hamilton police in 1947. When Bernie Arbour Stadium opened, son Michael threw the first ball and was involved in coaching at the stadium for years after.

St Brigid's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday morning, 25 Aug, was the setting for a pretty wedding when Jean Margaret Vetters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Vetters, became the bride of LS William Stephen Arbour, RCNVR, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Arbour. Father Marshmann officiated. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was gowned in white slipper satin, made on the torso lines. A Mary Stuart headdress caught herfingertip veil. She carried a cascade of red roses and white gladioli.As maid of honor, Wren Dorothy J. Johnstone wore an orchid dress. The bridesmaids, Misses Betty Radcliffe and Marion Pearen, were in lime green similar in style to the bridal gown. All wore matching headdresses and carried cascades of pink roses and mixed flowers. Flt-Sergt John McMullin was groomsman, and ushers were Gordon Arbour, brother of the groom, and LS James Mumford, RCNVR. At a reception at Maloney's Art Gallery, the bride's mother received wearing a dress of pearl grey silk mesh, accented with a corsage of fuscia sweet peas. Also receiving was the groom's mother in a beige two-piece printed dress with corsage of lemon and salmon inned gladioli. For the wedding trip to Detroit and Northern Ontario, the bride donned a dressmaker suit in powder blue shade with brown accessories. The couple will live in Toronto.

Their nephew Peter ARBOUR remembers his Uncle Gord and Aunt Reta: "We would go there most times in the summer. They had a pool in the backyard, and three cousins, too. We didn't interact much becausethey were a bit older than Arlene [his sister] and me. The parents would talk and thekids would swim and have fun in the pool. This is funny: I never said anything about it but Uncle Gord reminded me of Popeye the Sailorman. HaHaHa! I knew he was a sailor because Dad showed me pictures of him onabig ship. Uncle Gord was in the Navy, but he didn't smoke a pipe like Popeye. HaHaHa! Every time wewent there Uncle Gord and Aunt Reta would always have a big smile for us."

According to Deborah RUSE-ARBOUR: When Gord married Reta, they blended their families: his three and her four filled the house with seven children. Also, it was not Gord but his brother Steve who wasin the Navy and it was probably he who wasthe onewho looked like Popeye -- although Steve and Gord looked so much alike it was hard to tell them apart.

Although Don - like all of Bill and Mary's children - drifted apart from his family, he did enjoy returning to his roots. As a youngster, the family spent a great deal of time in Waubaushene. When hebecame a father himself, he tried to pass along alittle taste of what he had experienced. When his son Peter was about 10- or 11-years old, Don invited him and a friend to go to Waubaushene. Peter was very excited for his father to show where he had spent summers and to meet some relatives. The three of them drove up in Don's trusty 1974 Gremlin. All of them slept inthe car next to the water. Although Peter cannot remember who they visited, he does recall have fun fishing and driving around.

From Marilyn ARBOUR GOUETT via email on 11 Nov 2012: I just wanted to let you know that Frank Arbour -- Henry and Kathleen's son -- passed away yesterday, Nov. 10th. He had just turned 90 in August. His ashes are to be buried here in St. John"s Cemetery in the Spring according to hisson Ross. They will be buried with his son Tom that passed away in 2006. Frank had been in a home in Barrie since early Sept. due to failing health and his wife Theresa is in the same home and not too well. She went into the home in May (2012).

KELLY, Marie Elizabeth Arbour - Passed on to Heaven Thursday, 22 April 2010 after a brave 26-year miracle. A devoted wife of 56 years to Joseph, loving mother of Joseph, James, Karen, Denise, Sandra,Deborah and Thomas. She will be missed by her grandchildren Marissa, Dan, Caitlin, Julia, Jordan, Pierce, Maggie, Alison, Carlye, Lachlan and Bronwyn. Mariewas one of the founding members of St. Brigid's Parish Young People's Club along with her lifelong friends Helen Coffee, Mary Trombetta and Betty Gallagher. In addition to raising a large, healthy and happy family, Marie was instrumental in assisting her husband Joe with his successin life including founding RE/MAX Hallmark Realty. Marie will be missed by everyone she met and will surely guide all who knew her to her side in Heaven. St Margaret's Church, Midland, was decorated with gladiola, mums, autumn flowers, and ferms, 9 Oct, for the 10 am wedding of Mary Grace Quilty, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Quilty, Midland, to Cecil E. Arbour, Penetang, son of Mrs. Frederick Arbour, Penetang, and the late Mr. Arbour. Rev. J. Mahoney officiated. Peter Bourrie was soloist andF. S. Johnstone was the organ accompanist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a ballaerina length chantilly lace redingote overnet tiers and satin. Her veil of French illusion with rolled edge was caught to a large covered headdress and she carried American beauty roses. Only attendant was the bride's sister, Anne, who chose a pale gree ballerina lengthgown of net over taffeta. She carried yellow roses. Robert Arbour acted as best man for his brother and ushers were John Quilty,Lawrence Arbour, Jack Carrie, and Jules Arbour. A wedding breakfast attended by 55 guests was held at the Brule Hotel in Penetang. A reception followed at the bride's home. The 60 guests were received by the bride's mother.

BLIZZARD OF JANUARY 1943
For three days following "North Simcoe's worst storm in years," Penetang was cut off from Midland. Blizzard raged from Monday, 18 January, until Thursday. With Penetang completely isolated, Dr. R.E. Robertson of Collingwood was detained in town forthree days. Finally hiring a dog sleigh, he journeyed to Midland and headed south from there. Elmvale was without train and bus service for almost a week. By Saturday, the highway was open from Barrie as far as French's Hill (nb: justNorth of Elmvale) and Monday, 25 January, a single track was opened to Midland, with snow banks 15 to 20 feet high piled on either side. In Coldwater, snow was piled to the tops of the store windows. A shovelling bee was organized by citizensto clear the main street. Old timers recalled the blizzard of 1904, whenPenetang had been without train service for three weeks.With traffic at a standstill following the storm, two Penetang airmen,JACK ARBOUR and BERT BOYER, walked from Barrie to Midland. Notes from about 2000: Elmer always enjyed playing hockey and actually got the opportunity to play as a professional. As WWII broke out, Elmerserved in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Upon return fromthe War, Elmerresumed playing hockey. In those days if you came to a small town to play hockey for them, the townspeople found you a job. Elmer eventually came to Gravenhurst, Ontario, to play for the Indians. While in Gravenhurst, he met Ruth, his future wife. Later Elmer went to play for the Powassan Hawks and was offered a job with Ontario Hydro. They owned a home in town as well as a cottageon the east end of Lake Nipissing, just outside of Callander, Ontario. Even after Elmer no longer played hockey,they stayed there in their littlepiece of heaven. They finally converted their cottage to a permanent home and sold their place in town. Ruthstill lives in their big place with the huge yard.

After a year long of coping with cancer and treatment, Susan's life ended gracefully while surrounded by the loveof her family and friends. Susan was born on 1 May 1948 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and had made Peterborough, Ontario, her home for over the past thirty years, while working as a hairstylist. Susan is survived by her husband Aubrey, children Joanna (Justin) O'Brian, granddaughter Jaidyn, and friend Stan. She is also survived by her siblings Judith, John, Patrick, Marsha, and Cyndy, along with several nieces and nephews. Susan is pre-deceased by her parents Gilbert and Mary Arbour and nephew Ryan. Susan is terribly missedby all those whose lives she touched. A memorial servicewas held on 10 November 2006 at Bayridge Alliance Church in Kingston, Ontario, attended by close friends and family. Gary was so talented and so very smart ! I was so fortunate to be not only his friend but also to have worked with him at the Ballet.While James Kudelka was creating and I was dancing...Gary was in the corner inspiring us with his wonderful love and passion for music on the piano. Helived an incredibly interesting and well travelled life and will certainly be missed by many! I still cannot believe that I visited him on that Saturday afternoon and that it would be my last time.....I carry with me years and years of wonderful memories of our friendship which willalways be close to my heart...... ARBOUR, Rose Arlene -- It is with great sadness that the Arbour family announces the passing of Arlene on Friday, 4 June 2004, in her 37th year. Arlene, a devoted mother, will be sadly missed by her loving daughter Lindsay. Dearly missed by mother Jean, brother Peter, wife Carolyn, and family. Arlene will also be greatly missed by many extended family and close friends. The family will receive friends at Jerrett Funeral Home, 660 Kennedy Rd. in Scarborough (south of Eglinton Ave., 416-266-4404). Visitation to be held on Friday, 11 June 2004, from 4-7 pm. Serviceat 7:00 pm. Cremation to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or to a charity of your choice.

ARBOUR, Thomas Joseph -- Passed away at the Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay on Thursday, 11 May 2006. Tom Arbour of Kirkfield, in his 55th year. Beloved son of Frank and Terry Arbour of Innisfil. Dear brother of Ross and his wife Cheryl. Loving nephew of Joyce and Al Funnell and Bernard and Mae Arbour. Survived by his nieces and nephews. Remembered by his wife Tiny. According to cousin Marily (ARBOUR) GOUETT, here is the tale of Tom's sudden death: Tom Arbour apparently was having what they thought to be heart problems and was in the hospital for some tests. TheDr. released him for the weekend and whilehome hewas working on his outboard motor and while testing it had a boating accident. He ended up with a few broken ribs and back in the hospital. He seemed to be coming along ok and was up walking around and just suddenly collapsed. The report indicatedablood clot. This is what his parents told us. How sad, he was a very nice person.
