* Medical Information:He suffered from heart problems for about 3 months before his death. His dropsy was brought about by heart failure.
* Note:Louis and Sidonie added 13 children to their family, four daughters and nine sons, all of whom were born in Joliette County. While their first child was born in Joliette City in 1859, by the year 1870, the family was part of the brandnew St-Emelie-de-l'Energie Parish located further north in Joliette County. In 1871, Louis was a farmer in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, along with many of his brothers. The family was still living there in 1881. Louis and Sidonie also became the godparents of four children while living in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie: niece Emelie HOULEin May 1877, nephew Martial ARBOUR in August 1879, niece Albina LASALLE in October 1881, and grandson Joseph RIVET in January 1886.
From the 1860s through the 1880s, Louis saw his siblings slowly leave Joliette County in search of better opportunities elsewhere. Younger sister Zoe and her family migrated to Ontario in about 1867.Younger brother Xavier and his family, along withyounger brother Basile, migrated to Ontario in about 1868. Lastly, younger brother Magloire followed them in about 1883.
Sometime thereafter, this branch of the ARBOUR family made the big moveto the Province of Ontario and settled in Simcoe County. The exact date of their move has yet to be determined, although it wasmost likely around spring 1886. In January1886, Louis and Sidonie served as godparents to their grandson in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. Their next appearance was in Midland, Ontario, as godparents for their niece Mary Louise ARBOURin July 1886.
Once in Ontario, Louis and Sidonie settled in Waubaushene to begin employment with the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. They then served as godparents to several additional family youngsters: great-nephew Alphonse JEAN in June 1887, granddaughter MariaAva ARBOUR in January 1892, and grandson Armos ARBOUR in January 1895, all baptised in Midland.
In 1890, Louis was a tenant farmer on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. The 1891 Census also shows them living in Waubaushene.
Soon after Sidonie's death, Louis appears to have abandoned his farmingefforts and moved into town. By April 1901, widowed and living with his three youngest sons, Louis owned a four-room house withan outbuildingon ¼ acre of Concession 10,Lot 10,C'est ave?e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»in the town of Waubaushene. Bio from Facebook on 11 April 2010:
11 April 1832 -- Louis-Edmund ARBOUR was one of the children of Jean-Baptiste ARBOUR and Marie-Emelie DORVAL -- our magnificent couple who were parents to 20 children. Born in Joliette City, QC, Louis was the 4th child and 2nd son of Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's brood. Like many generations of ARBOURs before him, Louis became a farmer. The 26-year old farmer married 17-year old Sidonie ETHIER on 07March 1859, in Joliette City. Louis and Sidonie added 13 children to their family, 4daughters and9sons, all of whom were born in Joliette County. Notes:
As a young man, George travelled to Ontario and remained there for as much as couple of years. In June 1882, he was present at the wedding of his cousin Vercheres GREGOIRE in Port Severn, Ontario. He then apprarently returned to Quebec.
Shortly after their wedding, George and Malvina travelled to Ontariofor a time. In June 1884, they were in Midland to act as godparents toGeorge's cousin William ARBOUR. In 1887, a George ARBOURwas farming part of Concession 13, Lot 12,betweenWaubaushene and Port Severn. Perhapshe is our George, as there are not known to be any others in that areaat this time.
By the middle of 1887, the young couple had returned to Quebec and seem to have stayed there for quite a while this time. They became godparents to nephew Philibert RIVET in June 1887 at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.By April 1891, George and Malvina were known to be living in Quebec during the Census. That year George was reportedly a farmer living in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. After this, George and Malvina again became godparents: to his cousin's daughter Anna ARBOUR in September 1891 and to hiscousin's son Francois COUTU in January 1901, both in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.
In April 1901, during the Census of that year, George and Malvina still lived in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. They owned a four-room house plus three outbuildings on one-acre of the 2nd Range, JolietteCanton. Georgewas reported to be a journeyman whoearned $300 that year. George and Malvina are thought to have had no children of their own. No births have been connected to them. However, both in the 1891 Census and in the 1901 Census, they were recorded with niece Domitille TALBOT, the daughterof Malvina's sister Marie-Louise PARENT and her husband Narcisse TALBOT. They seem to have adopted the girl.
The story of the girl's parents is somewhat unclear. Marie-Louise and Narcisse appear to have married in about 1883. Their daughter Marie TALBOT was born on 16 October 1884 in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie and baptised there on 18 October 1884. Marie'sstillborn twin was also born there on the 16th; this baby was buried on 20 October 1884. One year later, on27 October 1885, Domitille TALBOT was bornalthough her baptismal record has not yet been located. Young Marie TALBOT must havenot been a healthy child as she died in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie just three years later on 19 December 1883 and was buried there on 23 December 1887. Perhaps it was shortly after this that Marie-Louise and/or Narcisse passed away - although they were not buried inSt-Emelie-de-l'Energie - and Domitille came under the care of her Uncle George and Aunt Malvina. The complete explanation for their situation may never be known.
In later years, George and Malvina again returned to the baptismal font at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie to hold more godchildren: George's cousinJeanne Domitille MORIN in May 1904 and George's cousin Georges Gerald LASALLE in August 1912.
Georges a épousé Malvina PARENT le 8 mai 1883 à Quebec,,Lanaudière,Quebec,Canada,Église de Sainte-Émilie-de-L'Énergie,Lanaudière, Québec, . Malvina (fille de Toussaint PARENT et Marguerite MARSAN) est née en 1856 à Sainte-Émélie-de-L'Énergie,J0k 2k0,Lanaudière,Québec,Canada,; est morte le 3 jan 1927 à Sainte-Émélie-de-L'Énergie,J0k 2k0,Lanaudière,Québec,Canada,; a été enterrée le 7 jan 1927 à Quebec,62020,Capitale-Nationale,Quebec,Canada,[Sainte-Émélie-de-L'Énergie,Cimetière de Sainte-Émilie-de-l'Énergie] - Quebec. Notes:
After their wedding, the bright young couple of William and Pamela settled in Waubaushene, but a year later tragedy came to their home. Dear Pamela never regained her health after the birth of their daughter MariaAva in early 1892. Pamela died on 24 June 1892 and was buried in St John's Cemetery in Waubaushene. Their baby girl followed shortly thereafter.
When William married second wife Zephyrine, they returned home to Waubaushene, where they had a son, Norman. Then came young Zephyrine's turn to depart this world. She died on 24 June 1899 and was buried in St Margaret's Cemetery in Midland. Our courageous William - weakened in heart but not in spirit - decided to take refuge with his parents for a time to collect himself.
Although uncommon grief seemed to beset William's marriages, he eventually decided to try once again. William married a third time to a woman named Florence Theresa GUERTIN in 1903. Florence was married earlier toa Mr. LeGARRY and had a son, Leo LeGARRY, whom she brought to live in William's house. Leo later served with the Merchant Marines.
At some point before November 1917, William and Florence moved their blended family to Espanola, Ontario, on the north side of the Georgian Bay, in the Sudbury District. Here, William continued to work as a lumberjack. William and Florence eventually had six children together, three daughters and three sons.
A family story tells that William was once involved in a fight in a lumber camp. A man stole his gold watch. Later in a bar, William saw the man place the watch on the table as his bet in a card game. The story says that during the ensuing fight, William killed a man, perhaps even the thief himself.
William's suspected death date of 1948 has been difficult to confirm. He supposedly lived in Windsor, ON, at the time but there seems to be noobituary in the Windsor paper. It has also been difficult to ascertainhis death record from the ProvinceofOntario.
Another note of interest: William is the grandfather to the famous hockey player and coach, Al ARBOUR, of the New York Islanders.Joseph a épousé Pamela LESSARD en 1891 à Ontario,,,,Canada,Waubaushene,L0k 2c0,Simcoe County. Alfred was about 11-years old when he moved with his family from Quebecto Ontario. As a young man, Alfred witnessed his brother Joseph's wedding in Midland in August 1896. After their wedding, the young couple initially settled in Waubaushene. By April 1901, the family had moved to a house on 4th Street in Midland. They owned a one-story, seven-room house on a regular city lot of one-fifth of anacre. Alfred earned $320 that year at the mill. A couple of years later - in August 1903 - the budding family experienced a modern-day miracle when Midland's community electric power system went intoeffect. Alfred and Delia had six children, four daughters and two sons. In April 1907, Alfred also became godfather to his cousin's daughter VelmaARBOUR in Waubaushene.
From Linda CHARRON via email on 18 Feb 2009:
Joseph Alfred Arbour was the 7th of 13 children born to Louis Arbour and Sidonie Ethier on 20 June 1872, in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie in Joliette County. He was baptised at Ste-Emelie the next day as "Paul Alfred." His Godparents were Olivier Bonnin and Marie Louise Robillard (of unknown connection). Throughout his life he was known as "Fred." In 1884, when Fred was about 11, the family made a moveto join other Arbour families in Waubaushene, Ontario. As a young man, in August 1896, Fred stoodas witness to the marriage of his brother Joseph-Louis when he married Edouina Massicotte. Fred stayed single until the age of 26. On 22 August1898, Fred married 21-year old Marie-Delia Thanasse, the daughter of Louis Thanasse and Agnes DesrochesinSt Croix Church, Lafontaine, Ontario. Delia was born 28 March 1877, in Lafontaine, and baptised two days later in St Croix Church in Lafontaine. Between the Census of April 1901 and the birth of their daughterin December 1904, Narcisse became a butcher. It is believed that he ran the butcher shop which was located adjacted to the grocery store owned bythe BRODEUR family on Richard Street in Victoria Harbour, near St Mary's Church. Narcisse later took his son Isadore out of school at a young age so he could work in the shop, increasing production and affording his siblings the opportunity for aneducation. Mary Jane was just 44-years old when she died at their home in Victoria Harbour. Son Isadoreforever remembered his mother with only love and admiration. However, Narcisse was not always known to be such a faithful family man, although dear Mary Jane never knew this. Sometime after Mary Jane's death, Narcisse remarried to a woman named Philomene LORMAND, who was a sister toDelia, who married Narcisse's brother Thomas. She was also a sister toJohn, who married Narcisse's cousin Delia. Narcisse and Philomene thenhad a daughter of their own, who was born in 1925.

Joseph was about seven-years old when he moved with his family from Quebec to Ontario. On 16 June 1891, 14-year old Joseph, along with brotherEdmund, was confirmed into the Catholic Church by Reverend John McABLE, Archbishop of Toronto, while at StMargaret's in Midland. After theirwedding, Joseph and Mary settled in Waubaushene, where they went on toraise nine children, three daughters and six sons. They also served asgodparents to niece Regina RIVET, who was baptised in Midland in May 1901.In 1901, the family lived with their first three children in a four-room house on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. Joseph earned $335 that year at the mill. He seemingly worked at the mill for many years. At some point, the four oldest sonsofJoseph and Mary migrated to the United States of America via the State of Michigan. It is unclear exactly when this occurred. Did they all go together or did one follow another? What is known is that after the lumber mills began closing in the 1920s and 1930s, work became scarce. The United States appeared to bethe promised land of opportunity for many from rural Ontario.

WORKER FALLS FOUR STOREYS TO DEATH IN MILL ACCIDENT
Midland, 13 June -- Hurtling four storeys to the basement of the Copeland Flour Mill, when a conveyor on which he was riding from one floor toanother, broke, Mr. Joseph Arbour, aged 56 years, of 2732nd Street, received injuries which terminated inhis death a few hours later. The fatal accident occurred about 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon. Mr. Arbour, who had been in the employ of the Copeland Mill for a number of years, was riding from a lower floor to one above on what is known as a "FraserConveryor," so named from its inventor. It consistes of an endless belt onto which platforms are stationed at intervals. The conveyor travelsvertically from the basement to the upper floor, and the platforms areso arranged that the workmen maystep onto one and travel either to an upper floor or a lower floor with the converyor.
Belt Snapped -- For some unknown reason, the conveyor belt snapped in two as Mr. Arbour was travelling on it, allowing him to hurtle from the third floor to the basement. Fellow workmen rushed to hisassistance. Dr. T J. Johnston was called and an ambulance summoned to bear the unfortunate man to the hospital. His injuries were extensive and included a fracture of the pelvis, four fractured ribs,a hemorrhage of the brain, and a hemorrhage of the abdomen.
Remained Conscious -- In spite of his serious condition, he was conscious when admitted to the hospital and was able to answer the questions of the nurses as his injuries were being attended. He rapidly lost strength, however, in spite of all that surgical and nursing skill could do.He died at 7:30 pm, four and a half hours after being admitted to the hospital.
His death record actually reports his birth date as 31 Dec 1876.

Edmund was a farmer and also worked as a lumberman in the bush during the winters when the ground was frozen. Mostly,he worked in the area of the Blind River on the northern shore of the Georgian Bay, just west of Manitoulin Island. One year, Edmund was recruited to work on the upper peninsula of the State of Michigan after a very bad forest fire. Many loggers from Ontario went to cut down as manyof the burnt trees as they could so as to foster new growth. The men called it the Wanapitei Slash. Edmund's truecalling, however, lay in hiswoodworking. Although he had no formal education and could not read - not even a ruler - Edmund created many beautiful artifacts. While living in Victoria Harbour, he made Clemence a table lamp from a block of maple, carved only with a penknife. The lamp was perfectly square and straight and the decorative sphere it held was perfectly round, as confirmed by his sons who measured it with calipers. A more well-known tribute to Edmund's carpentry abilities is the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland. The family says that he helped to build the steeple on the Shrine in 1926. Edmund and Clemence moved their family from Victoria Harbour to Torontoprior to 1930, probably in about 1928. In the big city, Edmund worked for a sheet metal company, wherehe hand-made sections of duct work thatwere very intricate, requiring painstaking effort on their detail. Theonly thing Edmund ever learned to write was his name because this company made him sign for his paycheck. Clemence was the one who taughthim to write his name. He had previously been in great health, but after Clemence's death, Edmund stopped eating, was confined to bed, and died. Notes:
After his mother's death in 1899, Norman's father remarried to a woman named Florence who became Norman's stepmother. At some point, the family moved to the north shore of the Georgian Bay and settled in Espanola,Ontario. Norman appears to have been working in the lumber trade in the Blind River, Ontario, area. Norman was drafted into service during WWI by the Canadian Expeditionary Forces on 23November 1917 at Blind River. At the time, he was reported to be 5'10" and weighed 142 pounds. Hehad a fair complexion with brown eyes and dark brown hair. Twenty-year old Norman listed his occupation as Bushman. Norman served with the 48thHighlanders Unit, 15th Canadian Battalion, in England and France. Thisunit was known affectionately as"TheLadies from Hell." They earned their tough moniker from their actions in the Aragon Forest in France. When Norman was discharged from the service in Toronto on 10 May 1919, his intentions were to return to Espanola. Norman eventually settled inSudbury, Ontario, and later married there. According to nephew William, he never would discuss his military service with anyone unless he got roaring drunk. At the time of his death, Norman was grandfather to 11 andgreat-grandfather to 3. At the time of Malvina's death, there were 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. A note of interest: Norman is the father to the famous hockey player and coach, Al Arbour, of the NewYork Islanders.

When Emil was an infant, a local newspaper published that he was the largest child in North America. Reportedly it was not because he was fat but because he was stocky and barrel-chested.
Emil and Cecilia had ten children. All of them were born in the United States, save Victor, who was born in Ontario and held dual citizenship.Emil and Cecilia eventually became naturalized United States Citizens. At some point, Emil was also attached to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a translator. Through this connection, Emil met Gilbert BOYCE, who eventually married Emil's sister Lucy. According to his daughter Linda, Emil was the great family storyteller. He kept the past alive foreveryone.
In 1940, Emil reported that he had earned $1,400 in 1939. According to the Census of that year, Emil was born in New York state.
Upon entering the US at Detroit, MI, on 16 Dec 1941, he reported himself as 5'10" with a dark complexion, dark brown hair, and brown eyes, as well as having a scar on the index finger of his left hand. Notes:
Like several other ARBOURs, Armos played professional hockey with the National Hockey League. He was with the Montreal Canadiens from 1918 to 1921. He was on the team when they won the Stanley Cup. Also on that team was goalie George VEZINA,after whom the coveted Vezina Trophy was named. During his time as a professional hockey player, Armos did take time out when he heard his country's call of duty. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in Victoria Harbour on 3 July 1916. He reported his occupation as a butcher. At the time of his physical examination, he was noted to be 5'9" and weighed 170 pounds. He had a ruddy complexion with brown eyes and brown hair. Private ARBOUR served initiallyin the 177th Battalion, then he transferred to the 228th Construction Battalion. For his war efforts, Armos earned the standard wage of $15 per month. He was discharged upon demobilization on 3 April 1919, and was slated to return to Victoria Harbour. Thenext year, in May 1920, Armos became the godfather to his cousin's son Bernard ARBOUR. After his return from the war, Armos resumed his hockey career. From 1921-1923, Armos played with the Hamilton, Ontario, hockey team. His last year of professional hockey was played in Toronto. Around this time, Armos marriedUrsula Mary MURPHY. Armos was apparently not the only athlete in the family. During the years before her marriage, Ursula played tennis with the Victoria Harbour Ladies' Tennis Club on a team known as the Go DemEasy Club. After their wedding, the young couple settled in Port McNicoll, Ontario, where Armos opened hisown butcher shop. Port McNicoll is asmall community located between Midland and Victoria Harbour. Armos and Ursula then set out to expand their family. When she became pregnant for the first time, Ursula went to be with her parents in Orillia for the birth. Tragically, though, the tiny baby girl died at less than two weeks old. When their next child was a stillborn son, Armos and Ursulasurely were deeply saddened. Thus, the healthy births of their next sonand daughter no doubt please them greatly. But once again their hopes were dashed when these children were followedbyyet another stillborn baby -- this one a girl -- born to Ursula prematurely. Life's tragedies were no strangers to this hardworking couple. In about 1930 or 1931, Armos' butcher shop burned to the ground. The young family then moved to Orillia, where Ursula's family still lived. They stayed there to raise their family, which eventually included another son. Armos became a salesman for Schneider Meats and Ursula was a schoolteacher. Armos' premature death at age 48, forced Ursulato finish raising their children -- ages 17, 14, and 9 -- as a single parent. Their elder son would die younghimself, when he was electrocutated while at work.
On 24 Mar 1919, CPL Armos ARBOUR, #853665, Reserve Unit CRTD, Original Unit 177th, Category A, Group 3, sailed aboard the HMTS Canada from Liverpool, England, and into Halifax, NS, arriving on 01 Apr1919. He had been transferred to the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) Canada from OMFC (?) and was bound for Toronto, ON.

A veteran of the First World War, Amos played for three teams during his brief NHL career that followed -- the defunct Hamilton Tigers, the Toronto St. Pats, and the Montreal Canadiens after being discharged. Previously, he had jumped right from his local Victoria Harbour team to theMontreal Canadiens, winning the Cup with the Habs in 1916. He then played for the 228th Battalion team in Toronto, one of the great non-NHL teams of all time. He enlisted the next year, but in 1918 he was able torejoin les Habitants for three more seasons, scoring 21 goals in 1919-20. Montreal traded the left winger to Hamilton with Harry Mummery for Sprague Cleghorn on November 26, 1921 and his scoring production declined. Two years later, he was dealt tothe Toronto St. Pats, and Arbour retired in 1924. Inall his NHL years, he played 113 regular season games but not a single playoff game.Joseph a épousé Ursula Mary MURPHY en 1922 à Orillia,,,Ontario,Canada,Simcoe County. Note: From son Allan ARBOUR (via Linda CHARRON on 10 Oct 2005): Grandpa was a hockey player. He played hockey for Victoria Harbour, Midland, Westinghouse in Hamilton, and Toronto Stockyards. He came from a hockey family. His brother Armosplayed on the Montreal Canadians Stanley Cup winning team in 1916. He also had cousins that played professional hockey. While living in Hamilton, he was in aserious car accident, and suffered head injuries. He had to have a metal plate inserted in his head. That ended his hockey career. He was also a good ball player in his day. He used to enjoy going down to the ball field and watch the ball games. He married Theresa Bourrie on 28 December 1936, They had 4 children Mary Jane, Allan, Eva, and Lucille. Grandpa worked in the family Butcher Shop until it was sold. He was sick and had suffered a heart attackat a very early age. He went to work at a butcher shop in Waubaushene until he became very ill. Grandpa passed away 21 December 1967. It wasunfortunate that you weren't old enough to know Grandpa. He spoke French fluently and would often sing little french songs. He also liked playing cards. He was a teaser and such a likeable person, he wasloved by everyone. He is sadly missed and fondly remembered.

As a young man, Art seems to have travelled to the big city of Toronto to find his own adventures. After marrying May, the young couple seem to have done a bit of farming somewhere in Ontario. Between the ages of 18 and 24, Louis worked for Canada Steamship Lines as a cook's assistant. Then in about 1928, Louis' entire family moved to Toronto into the Parliament and Queen Streets area. TheCatholic Church in that area is St Paul's,even today. In November 1931, a few years after their arrival in the big city, Louis stood witness at the wedding of his sister Kitty. Less than a year after that, Louis chose his life partner. After their wedding, the young couple lived on Sumach Street, where their first two sons were born. Shortly after this, they moved to the east side of the Don River to help son Edmund's asthma. Louis and Margaret eventually had five sons, to which they added three adopted daughters. They were also grandparents to 19 children by October 1977 - although Louis only lived to hold three of his grandchildren before his death. Six great-grandchildren have been added to their clan since 1986.Louis and Margaret also became godparentsto their grandson Paul ARBOURin October 1965 in Toronto. Margaret made it her life's work to raise her children to become thoughtful, responsible adults. She was extremely proud of the fact that all of her children graduated fromhigh school-not necessarily a common feat inthe1950s and 1960s. Margaret was veryreligious herself and made sure that all of the children attended Catholic schools, both at the elementary and secondary levels. This upbringing was quite instrumentalin encouraging their son Allen to becomeaCatholic priest. In fact, the family was honored enough to have three priests among their sons at one point.

From his cousin Bud O'REILLY via email on 25 Mar 2008: I assume his army training was in Saskatchewan where they would meet and fall in love. They moved to Port Robinson, about 5 miles north of Welland, Ontario, on the Welland Canal, justdown the road from his sister Mae Jalbert and across the road from his cousin Laura (Gouin) O'Reilly, my mother. Ihave a picture of him in his army uniform taken beside our house in Port Robinson. Theresa Arbour lived with Roy Ladouceur across the Canal lift bridge a few yards down the road. Notes:
A place among the greatest head coaches in NHL history will always be held by Alger Joseph "Radar" Arbour. His career totals of 1,606 games behind the bench and 781 victories trail only the legendaryScotty Bowman in the record ledger. Arbour's guidance contributed significantly to the New York Islanders' rapid ascent to competitive status in the 1970s and the club's subsequent run of four consecutive Stanley Cup wins from 1980 to 1983, as well as a record 19 consecutive playoff series wins from 1980 to 1984.
The Sudbury, Ontario, native played defense on the junior Windsor Spitfires of the OHA. After distinguishing himself as an amateur, he was signed by the Detroit Red Wings and joined the pro ranks with the EdmontonFlyers of the Western Hockey Leaguein 1952-53. He split the next fouryears between Alberta, the Motor City and Sherbrooke in the Quebec senior loop.
In 1957-58, Arbour played his first full NHL season in the red and white of the Wings. Following that season, he was claimed by the Chicago Black Hawks, where he toiled for three years including 1961, the year of the franchise's Stanley Cup triumph. Arbour next played five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs and earned his second Stanley Cup ring in 1962. After spending the 1966-67 season in theAHL, he returned to contribute experience and stability to the defense corps of the expansion St.Louis Blues in 1967-68. Early in 1970-71, he retired as a player after 600 games over 14 years. Arbour was also one of the few players in league history to wear glasses while playing.
Upon retiring, Arbour was immediately hired to stand in as coach of theBlues for the remainder of the 1970-71 schedule. During the last 50 games of the season, the team responded well by posting a 21-15-14 mark before falling to the Minnesota NorthStars in the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
Arbour guided St. Louis on an interim basis over the next two seasons but jumped at the greatest challenge of his young coaching career in 1973. Prior to the 1973-74 schedule, the New York Islanders were coming off a difficult expansion season in which they'd accumulated a mere 30 points. The organization felt it had some promise and required a young, ambitious figure to steer the team in the right direction. Arbour's positive impact on the team was immediate. The squad improvedits total to 56 points and began building around talented defenseman Denis Potvin.
The 1974-75 season saw the arrival of Arbour's Islanders as a competitive NHL franchise. They won 33 regular-season matches before enjoying a memorable playoff run. They defeated Pittsburgh in a seven-game quarter-finals after losing the first three games. In the semi-finals, they fell one game short of doing the same thing to the defending champion Philadelphia Flyers.
During each of the next four seasons, the Islanders finished with more than 100 points. This didn't translate into a Stanley Cup triumph, but the team did gain valuable experience. Following the 1978-79 campaign, Arbour was presented the Jack AdamsAward as the NHL's top coach. In 1979-80, the Islanders attained their ultimate goal by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to win the Stanley Cup in their eighth season. They repeated this accomplishment in each of the next three yearstobecome only the second NHL club to win four straight titles (Montreal did it twice). Their drive for five consecutive championships fell short when they lost to the Edmonton Oilers in the 1984 finals.
Afterward, Arbour marshaled the Islanders to solid if unspectacular results before stepping down following the 1985-86 season. He served as the organization's vice-president of player development before returning as the team's bench boss partway through the 1988-89 season. Arbour's contribution to the development of hockey in the United States was acknowledged in 1992 when his name was engraved on the Lester Patrick Trophy.
The pinnacle of his second installment behind the New York bench occurred in 1992-93 when the Islanders upset the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins to reach the semi-finals. Arbour retired in 1994as the second-winningest coach of all time, with 781 regular-season victories and 123 post-season triumphs to his credit. One of the major foundations in the history of the New York Islanders, Arbour was an obvious choice to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame Builders category in 1996. "Its behind the New York bench occurred in 1992-93 when the Islanders upset the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins to reach thesemi-finals. Arbour retired in 1994 as the second-winningest coach of all time, with 781 regular-season victories and 123 post-season triumphs to his credit. One of the major foundations in the history of the NewYork Islanders, Arbour was an obvious choice to enter the Hockey Hall of Fame Builder category in 1996.Even as a player, Al Arbour distinguished himself from the rest of the National Hockey League. A defensive defenceman par excellence, the Sudbury, Ontario-born Arbour was at his best protecting his netminder by blocking shots, in spite of the fact he wore glasses while playing.
Signed by the Detroit Red Wings, Al joined the junior Windsor Spitfiresjust shy of his seventeenth birthday. The goaltender he protected there was Glenn Hall, while teammates included other future Red Wings Earl Reibel, Glen Skov and Eddie Stankiewicz. During his four seasons in Windsor, Al would also play with Cummy Burton, Don Cherry, Larry Hillman, John Muckler and Dennis Riggin.
After winning a WHL championship with the Edmonton Flyers in 1952-53, Arbour saw his first NHL action the next season, playing 36 games with the Red Wings in 1953-54. Although he saw no action duringthe playoffs that spring, Al got his name engraved on the Stanley Cup for the first time following the Wings' seven-game series with the Montreal Canadiens in the final.
During that dynastic era for Detroit, the Red Wings had a surplus of fine defenceman, with Warren Godfrey, Bob Goldham, Larry Hillman, Red Kelly and Marcel Pronovost all earning time on the blueline, and Arbour anxiously waited for his chance, biding his time predominantly with the Edmonton Flyers. In 1954-55, he was named to the WHL's Second All-Star Team, but it wasn't until the playoffs of 1955-56 that Al saw NHL action again.
By 1957-58, Arbour had finally cracked the Red Wings line-up full-time.But in June 1958, he was plucked from Detroit's line-up by Chicago in the Intra-League Draft. Shoring up the Black Hawks blueline, Al spent three seasons in Chicago, including asecond Stanley Cup championship in1961.
After winning the Cup with Chicago, Al may have been disappointed to beselected from the Hawks by Toronto in the June 1961 Intra-League Draft, but it was fortuitous timing for the bespectacled defenceman, as he was part of the Toronto dynasty thatwon the Stanley Cup in 1962 and 1964(he missed Toronto's 1963 Stanley Cup championship as he spent most ofthat season with the Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, where he was named to the league's First All-Star Team. He made the All-Starsquad again in 1964 and 1966, and was named the AHL's best defenceman in 1965). Championships became de rigueur to Arbour, who assisted Rochester to Calder Cup championships in 1965 and 1966.
With the NHL's expansion to twelve teams in time for the 1967-68 season, Al was left unprotected by Toronto and was grabbed by the St. Louis Blues. The veteran defenceman added much to the expansion franchise. TheBlues secured a number of stars inthe twilights of their careers that helped make St. Louis a formidable opponent to challenging teams. Besides Arbour, St. Louis boasted an inaugural season defence that included Doug Harvey, Noel Picard, Bob and Barclay Plager and Jean-Guy Talbot.Old pal Glenn Hall was in goal, while Red Berenson, Don McKenny, Gerry Melnyk, Dickie Moore and Ron Stewart added veteran presence to the offense. In four seasons with the Blues, Arbour played in the Stanley Cup Final three times.
I enjoyed the fun of it (playing); the feeling that you had after you won a hockey game," stated Arbour in Dick Irvin's book, 'Behind the Bench'. "There's no greater feeling than the one you get whenyou're a player and you go out and win a real tough game. I've had great feelings coaching and winning the Stanley Cup, but it never seemed to be the same feeling I got when I was a player."
In 1970, with the end of his playing career imminent, the thirty-eight-year-old Arbour was introduced to the idea of coaching. "Scotty Bowman was the one who got me interested in coaching," explainedAl. "I was playing for him in St. Louis atthe endof my career. He wanted to step aside and become the general manager and he wanted me to take over."
Arbour coached until February 1971, but returned to playing when Bowmanreturned behind the bench. Bowman was fired at the end of that season."There was controversy all the time," admitted Arbour.
Al, who was under contract to the Blues, assumed the position of assistant general manager with St. Louis beginning with the 1971-72 season. At Christmas, with the team struggling, the coach, Bill McCreary, was fired and Al was asked to coach once again, and helped guide the Blues into the playoffs. By the following season, the situation changed once again. "I got into a conflict with Sid (Solomon III, the Blues' owner). We weren't hitting it off very well. I knew I was a markedman. I coachedthirteen games and I was gone."
After scouting briefly for the Atlanta Flames, Arbour was approached with another offer to coach. "Bill Torrey asked me if I would be interested in coaching the (New York) Islanders. I told him no. Isaid I had four kids and wouldn't want to move them to New York." But after visiting Long Island for the first time, Al acquiesced and accepted the position. "You could see a good team in the making," said Arbour. "We got DenisPotvin for the defence, Trots (Bryan Trottier) at centreand other young bucks like Clark Gillies, Bob Bourne and John Tonelli. Then came the arrival of Mike Bossy."
The Islanders finished first overall in 1978-79, but were eliminated bythe Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs. "We changed our format arounda bit during that regular season," explained Arbour. "Everyone said toforget about the playoff losses totheMaple Leafs in 1978 and the Rangers in 1979. But I said, 'No, I don't want them to forget about it. Just remember that so it will never happen again.' We carried those lossesinto the season a little longer than I thought it wouldbe and I couldn't really get them going." Nevertheless, Al was chosen as coach of the year, winning the Jack Adams Trophy.
The next season, the Islanders added a significant piece to the puzzle."At the trading deadline, we got Butch Goring from L.A. We had a very young team and he was the guy we needed with just the right kind of experience. We needed somebody that wasgoing to have that calming influence. He had that affect on the team immediately and we were on our way from there forward," nodded Arbour.
Arbour was correct. The New York Islanders won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 1980, then proceeded on an extraordinary streak that saw the franchise win the championship four seasons in a row.In 1980, the Islanders defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to win the Stanley Cup. The next spring, the victim was the Minnesota North Stars, whomthe Islanders took in five games. It was afour-game sweep of the Vancouver Canucks in 1982 and in 1983, another four-game sweep, this time over the Edmonton Oilers.
At the conclusion of the 1985-86 season, Al retired as coach of the Islanders. But two and a half years later, after holding a management position with the team, Arbour was coaxed to return behind the bench. "I had never given any thought tocoaching again," said Arbour. Replacing Terry Simpson, he took over a team depleted of much of the talent he had enjoyed in the early-1980's. "When you're not accustomed to losing, it certainly does a job on you. It eats you up." In his second tenure coaching the Islanders, Al was behind the bench from 1988-89 to 1993-94. Thezenith of his second installment coaching the Long Island squad took place when the Islanders reached the semi-finals by upsetting the Pittsburgh Penguins, defending Stanley Cupchampions. Following the 1993-94 season, Al Arbour retired
Arbour retired having coached 1,499 games for the Islanders, more by 487 than any coach had been behind the bench with one franchise. Current coach Ted Nolan had an idea that Arbour should coach one more Islanders' contest to make the total a nice round figure. With the permission ofgeneral manager Garth Snow and owner Charles Wang, Arbour was approached about coaching again, just one more game,to bring his total with theIslanders to 1,500. "I haven't coached a game in 15 years," said an astounded Arbour. "I haven't seen a game in person in three years."
Or so he thought. On November 1, 2007, Al celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday. The next day, he signed a one-day contract to coach the Islanders and on Saturday, November 3, Arbour was behind the bench as his beloved Islanders were challenged by the Pittsburgh Penguins. "This is anincredible gesture by Ted and the Islanders," said Arbour at the time."I am flattered that Ted thought of me and I wouldn't miss this night for the world. I told the team that I do not want any pre-game fanfare.I'm there to coach the game and help Ted and my Islanders try to earn two points against a very toughteam."
Commenting on the way the game had evolved, Al stated, "It's a totally different game now, a European game with skating and winding up and moving the puck. I really like the way they opened the game up."
Arbour and the Islanders defeated Pittsburgh 3-2, with Miroslav Satan scoring the game-winner. The victory gave Al a lifetime record of 782 career regular seasons win, 577 losses and 248 points in 1,607 regular season games, making him the second-winningest NHL coach of all time. With the Islanders alone, Arbour coached 1,500 regular season games, with 740 wins, 537 losses and 223 ties. In playoff action, Arbour's career record is 118 wins and 83 losses in 201 games.
As a coach, Al led his teams to four Stanley Cup championships, was named coach of the year in 1979 and was awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for contributions to American hockey in 1992. On January 25, 1997, Al was honoured by the New York Islanders with a special night. For his incomparable dedication to the sport, Al Arbour was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category in 1996.

Excerpts from Pete's online Guestbook -- 20 Oct 2009
17 October 2009
Those who you have left behind will forever remember your gentle ways and joyful smile. You always had a kind word and a twinkle in your eye. Your positive attitude was infectious. I can't ever remember a time when you grew impatient or irritated with anyone. As a child, some of my fondest memories are the times that we spent together at grandma's houseand all around Rush Lake. You always had time for me, made the best grilled cheese sandwiches, took me to the movie, drove me all over the place while telling me funny stories about the locals and your childhood. You made me watch The 6 Million Dollar Man and Lawrence Welk. You always saw the good in others and made everyone around you feel special. I also remember how much you loved andadmired my dad, you told me that he was always like a father to you. I wish I could have spent more time with you as an adult. You have touched all of our lives and we will miss you, but I know you are home now with yourbrothers and parents. -- Dawn Arbour Shockley, Ada, Michigan

As of August 2001, Dorothy and Ernie also had one grandson, Randy Edward JONES (aka Randall JONES), but it is unclear who his parents are. Randy was unmarried at this time and worked light construction, remodelling homes and doing carpentry.

From Kathy Wedyke of Sanilac County Genealogy Library via email on 02 May 2008: I did find Velma and she is buried in Watertown Township, at the Greenwood cemetery in section B125AL1 G2. Now I will give this information to my volunteer and like I said before she is very behind and I cannot tell you when she will get this done but she will do it. She will look for a death record and an obit, if there is one. Well, at least we now know where she is buried. Thanks, Kathy Wedyke, Deckerville Public Library
From Kathy Wedyke via email on Saturday 17 Jan 2009: Velma V. Arbour/ 60 yrs/b 15 Dec 1927/died in Sanilac Medical Care/birthplace Michigan/unmarried/never employed/residence 137 N. Elk St., Sandusky/ father Anthony Arbour/mother not available/informant J McCoy of Minden City/ died of Myocardia infection
--> Note added 01 Feb 2009: I think that Velma must have suffered from some disability. In 1930, she was not living with her parents but in a home with other children. However, this supposition does not completelyexplain all the questions about herfamily or her life.
According to the 1940 Census, Velma never went to school.

Mr. Arbour was and will remain such an inspiration - he was one of my most memorable teachers at Denis O'Connor CHS. Thanks to his encouragement I was able to start believing in myself and my abilities. His love of music was contagious as healso got me and my friends to join the school choir. He will be missed. ~ Kathy Zielinski KozlowiczFamille/Conjoint(e): Catherine OOMAN. [Feuille familiale] [Tableau familial]
