Notes:

As a young man, Francois travelled back to his ancestors' homeland of France. Although the reason for this is not crystal clear, Francois was a mariner so perhaps his work brought him there. Once there, Francois met the woman he was destined to marry. His bride Marie-Marguerite HENRYand her family were Acadian exiles living in France.
According to Paul-Yvon BELLIVEAU, a Parish Priest in present-day Gatineau, Quebec, the question concerning the true reason for the expulsion of the Acadians from Acadie in 1755 remains a very controversial issue. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 madeall of eastern Canada a British Colony and all residents were considered British subjects. Some claim the expulsion to have been strictly a religious question wherein the English demanded allegiance to the Throne of England, which wasof course of theAnglican Faith. The Acadians, being of the Roman Catholic Faith, couldnot swear this kind of allegiance without renouncing their obedience to the authority of the Pope. The Acadians were, however, assured by their priest that swearing allegiancetothe Throne of England was a noble and virtuous patriotic gesture and would not interfere with their continued practice of the Roman Catholic Faith. Many Acadians did in fact give their allegiance to the Throne of England but were exiled nonetheless. Apparently the Acadians were in possession of the most fertile landsin central Nova Scotia. The swearing allegiance to the Throne of England became a poor excuse to get the Acadians off these fertile lands sothe England could take possessionof them.
In any event, Francois and Marie appear to have settled in the LeHavre area after their wedding to begin their family. They seem to have had three sons. Francois and his family occupied farm No. 20 at the Ligne Acadienne in Poitou Province,France,in 1774.
In 1785, Spain extended a Land Grant to Acadian exiles. The Spanish owned the land of what is present-day Louisiana in the United States. Francois and Marie decided to take them up on the offer and moved their young family across the Atlantic. Theydeparted from France on 11 Jun 1785 and arrived on 19 August 1785 onboard "Le Beaumont," a 180-ton merchantvessel chartered by the Spanish government for the exclusive privilegeof transporting Acadian exiles from France to Louisiana and captainedbyOliver DANIEL.
The young family immigrated to New Orleans and then two weeks later, travelled up the Mississippi River to their portion of the land grant at the settlement of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In September 1785, Francois took possession of his virgin forestland which was located on the West bank of the Mississippi, two and a half leagues (about six and a half miles) above a point opposite the fort at Baton Rouge, where they established their own branch of the ARBOUR Family. Today thereare many Cajuncousins, descendants of Francois and Marie.
Francois was only 47-years old when he died at his homestead in Baton Rouge in 1790, after a long and serious illness under the care of Dr. Michel MAHIER. Due to his illness, Francois had little time after his arrival and must have worked hard to clear his land and establish a farm. He had no more than four active years - or less even - in which he built a levee, cleared and fenced a fair portion of land, built two houses,and accumulated the possessions listed in the inventoryof his estateafter his death. The inventory includes oxen, cows, calves, a heifer, a bull, a mare and colt, a sow,hogs, a cart with leather straps for oxen, tools, a hand mill for rice, and some other items, altogether appraisedat 179 pesos, 4 reales. The "lastthe habitation on which said deceaseddied, of sixarpents front on which there is a good levee, twenty arpents cleared and twelve with fences of the French and English style, two cabins and good land with many cypress trees" was appraised at 200pesosand actually totaled 263 arpents.
On 4 July 1792, Marie took her own personal items and then an auction was held to sell off everything else to pay the family debt, including medical expenses and the loss of the 1790 and 1791 crops.The auction brought 366 pesos, 7 reales, and all but 58 pesos were used to pay the debts. The remainder was divided between Marie and their three sons. Marie's whereabout after this are unknown.

GENERAL ACT OF CESSION.

Section 1. Be it enacted, etc., That the United States shall have power to purchase or condemn in the manner prescribed by law, upon making Just compensation therefore, any land in the State of Louisiana not already in use for public purposes, required for customhouses, court-houses, arsenals, national cemeteries, or for other purposes of the government of the United States.

Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, etc., That the United States may enter upon and occupy any land which may have been or may be purchased or condemned, or otherwise acquired, and shall have the right of exclusive legislation, and concurrent jurisdiction, together with the State of Louisiana, over such land and the structures thereon, and shall hold the same exempt from all State, parochial, municipal, or other taxation. (Approved July 6, 1882.)

ALEXANDRIA NATIONAL CEMETERY.
This cemetery, with the roadway belonging thereto, is situated at Pineville, in the parish of Rapides, and contains an area of 8.24 acres. It was taken possession of for military purposes under act of Congress approved February 2, 1867 (14 Stat., 399).

Title (to cemetery).—Decree of condemnation for lot 24 in Poissin division of the village of Pineville, in the parish of Rapides, containing 8.24 acres, in cause No. 7248, ex parte, Secretary of War, in the circuit court of the United States for the fifth circuit and district of Louisiana. Decree rendered and filed with the record in said cause in the clerk's office of said court at New Orleans April 26,1875.

Title (to roadway).—1. Donation from the town of Pineville, dated October 5, 1888, conveying a right of way, etc. Recorded in the clerk's office at Alexandria October 5,1888.

Donation from Robert Aaron, individual and as tutor, dated January 5,1889, conveying additional right of way. Recorded in the office of the clerk of the district court, in book of donations, pages 1 and 2.

Jurisdiction.—Ceded to the United States over this cemetery by the following act, approved September 16, 1868:

Whereas, the United States of America have purchased, or are about to par-chase and set apart certain tracts of land in the State of Louisiana, hereinafter described, to be used and maintained at their own expense, in perpetua, as national cemeteries for the interment of the remains of United States soldiers, deceased; and

Whereas, the laws of said United States provide that no public money shall be expended for the purchase of any land within any State of the United States until a cession of the jurisdiction by the Legislature of the State; and

Whereas, a formal application has been filed by the said United States, through their properly accredited representative, for the aforesaid cession, so far as relates to the lands hereinafter described; now, therefore,

Be it resolved, etc., That the State of Louisiana relinquish all jurisdiction over the hereinafter described lands and premises in said State purchased or to be purchased and set apart for the purposes aforesaid, and that such Jurisdiction be, and the same Is hereby ceded to and forever vested in the United States. * * * All that certain tract, piece, or parcel of land situated, lying, and being In the city of Baton Rouge and designated on a map of a survey of said city made by Henry and Wm. Notes:

When he was 15-years old, Firmin immigrated to the United States of America with his parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. Firmin andhis wife Rosalie settled in St James, where they had seven children, three daughters and four sons. The family was not listed in St James Parish in 1810 Census. What happened to them? Perhaps something tragic happened, such as Rosalie and all the childrendied, as no further sign of them has ever been found. Firmin possibly lived with hisbrother Frederic and family in 1810. Firmin is believed to have remarried in 1812. A Firmin ARBOUR married SusannaGLOVER on 1 July 1812 at St Joseph's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Notes:

a young man, Francois worked as a mariner, like his father. When he was18-years old, Francois immigrated to the United States of America withhis parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. Francois and his wife Jeanne had nine children, six daughters and three sons. By 1810, thefamily lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they contributed to the immense growth of the community. In 1810, the town filled only six pages in the Census rolls, but by 1820, had grown to 24 pages. Francois andJeanne lived there in 1810 with three of their daughters, as the others seem to have died by then. In fact, none of their sons lived until adulthood and the ARBOUR name ended with Francois on this line. In December 1810, the family lived next door toFrancois DAIGLE, probably Jeanne's father. A Private Fr. ARBOUR fought with the 8th Regiment (Meriam's Regiment), Louisiana Military, during the War of 1812. There were no other Francis/Francois ARBOURs alive at this time so one may conclude it wasthis Francois who fought for his home and that he died after 1812. However, speculation exists that Fr. could actually stand for Frederickso no conclusions can be made. It is unclear when or where Francois andJeanne passed away. Jeanne was alive during the Census taken in December 1810, so she died some time after this. Furthermore, there is a Francois ARBOUR listed in Baton Rouge in the 1830 Census and in the 1840 Census. He is probably also ourFrancois.

A plantation of his ownership, situated in this County on the right bank of the Mississippi river, bounded above to the properties which the purchaser had acquired on date of yesterday, of Joseph Braud and below by those of Hypolites Mallet,composed of three arpents and eighteen feetof front on forty of depth with the opening which corresponds to it, in a word, such as it comprises and containsactually, such as the purchaser, has seen, visited and accepted, and which belongs tothe vendor forhaving been purchased at the auction of the property of the late Charles Robichaut, who had acquired it at the public sale of the succession of the late Charles Henry, according to as it is confirmed by the documents existingand deposited in the archives of the Government of Baton Rouge. And the said Charles Henry had the ownership of this land by concession accored in the name of S.M.C. of the said three arpents and eighteen feet of land of front on forty of depthmentioned hereinabove, aswell as for like quantity of front and depth which had formerly belonged to Joseph Braud and that on date of yesterday the latter had sold to the same Mr. Pierre Allin.

Notes:

When he was 13-years old, Frederic immigrated to the United States of America with his parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. After their wedding, Frederic and Rose settled in Baton Rouge, where they had five children, three daughters and two sons. Frederic's name appears in the records of Spanish West Florida as a property holder in 1800, in 1801, and in 1811, as well as a merchant in Baton Rouge in 1808. The family was confirmed to have still lived there in 1810. That year, the young family had several other people living in their home, probably Frederic's brother Firmin plus others. They also owned one slave. On 7 September 1812, Frederic sold a parcel of his land to a fellow by the name ofHypollite TIVOLLIER. The propertywas located at the edge of his land, adjacent to that of his brother John's. The land measured just over 22'by 55' and was sold for $433, quite a nice sum in those days.

Two unrelated families, using the surnames Harbour and Arbour, are associated with greater Acadia:
1) Michel, fils, son of Michel Harbour, père, and Marie Constantineau, born at Petite-Rivière-St-Charles, Québec, in c1674, married Barbe, daughter of Acadians Pierre Morin and Francoise Chiasson,in c1700. They had nine children, including eight soà 20s-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»ns who created families of their own. However, these Harbours were born and raised in various communities along the St Lawrence River, not in Acadia.
2) Pierre Arbour dit Carrica, born at Bayonne, France, in c1700, married Susanne Moreau probably in c1721. They settled at St-Pierre-du-Nord on Île St-Jean, today's Prince Edward Island, and were among the first Acadians to settle there. LE GRAND DÉRANGEMENT
Living in territory controlled by France, the Acadians on Île St-Jean escaped the British deportations in Nova Scotia in the fall of 1755. Their respite from British oppression was short-lived, however. As a 15-year-old, he may have been one of the Île St-Jean deportees of 1758, along with younger brothers or cousinsGuillaume Arbour, born in ct? 20s-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»1749, and Chrysostôme Arbour, born in c1750. The British deported the Arbours to Cherbourg in Normandy, where Chrysostôme died inDec 1758, probably from the rigors of the voyage; he was only 8 years old. In France, Francois,fils made his living as a caulker. By c1763, he was in Le Havre, where he married Marie, daughter of Acadian JosephHenry, in Nov 1765; the priest who recorded his marriage noted that both of Francois's parents were deceased at the time of the wedding and that he had resided at Le Havre for a year and a half. Francois, fils and Marie had at least five children in France, all sons, the first three born probably at Le Havre: Francois-Henry in c1767, Jean-Louis-Firmin, called Louis, in c1770,and Frédéric-Edouard in c1772. Francois and Marie had another son, Louis-Nicolas, at Archigny, Poitou, in Jun 1774. Despite the failureof theventure and the retreat of most of the Poitou Acadiansto Nantes in late 1775 and early 1776, Francoisand Marie remained at Archigny, where yet another son, Louis-Joseph, was baptized in Jun 1778. Louis-Nicolas died at Archigny, age9, in Dec 1782. BySep 1784, Francois and his family had joined the Acadians in the port city of Nantes, where they survivedas best they could on work he could find and on government handouts. Youngest son Louis-Joseph probably died at Nantes in late 1784 or early 1785. By 1785, many Acadians like Francois, fils weredone with life in the mother country. When the Spanish government offered the Acadians inFrance the chance for a new life in faraway Louisiana, Francois Arbour,fils and his family agreed to take it.
LOUISIANA: RIVER SETTLEMENTS
Francois Arbour, now 45, wife Marie, 40, and their three older sons--Francois-Henry, 18, Louis, 15, and Frédéric, 13--sailed to Louisiana aboard Le Beaumont, the third of the Seven Ships from France, and arrived at New Orleans in Aug 1785.After a bct? 20s-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»rief respite in the city, they settled at Baton Rouge, on the riverabove New Orleans, with the majority of the passengers from their ship. Francoisand Marie had no more children in Louisiana. The marriage record of Francois's oldestson, Francois-Henry, dated 27 Sep 1790, noted that the groom's father was deceased, so Francois, père died probably atBaton Rouge in the late 1780s, in his late 40s. Descendants of Francois-Henry ARBOUR (1767-?)
Francois-Henry, eldest son of Francois Arbour and Marie Henry, was bornat Le Havre, France, in c1767 and followed his parents and siblings toLouisiana aboard Le Beaumont, the third of the Seven Ships, in 1785. He married Marie-Jeanne-Jacqueline, called Jeanne, daughter of fellow Acadian Francois Daigle, at St-Gabriel in Sep 1790. Jeanne also had come to Louisiana aboard Le Beaumont. They settled at Baton Rouge, where their children were born. Their daughters married into the Altazin and Lerry families.
1 Oldest son Francois-Alexandre, born in c1792, died at age 2 in Aug 1794.
2 Charles-Francois, called Francois, born in c1800 and baptized at the Baton Rouge church at age 2 in Oct 1802, may have married Marie Aurore,called Aurore, Leroi or Roy, place and date unrecorded. Their son Francois Bonicase was born near Grand Coteau, St Landry Parish, in Mar 1842.
3 Youngest son Jean Pierre died at Baton Rouge, age unrecorded, in Apr 1806.
Descendants of Jean-Louis-Firmin ARBOUR (1770-?)
Jean-Louis-Firmin, called Louis and sometimes Firmin, second son of Francois Arbour and Marie Henry, was born at Le Havre, France, in c1770 and followed his parents and siblings to Louisiana aboard Le Beaumont, the third of the Seven Ships, in 1785. They settled at St-Jacques, now St James Parish, where their children were born. Their daughter married intothe Legendre family. Jean-Louis-Firmin remarried to Susanna, daughter of Anglo-American George Glover, at the BatonRouge church, East Baton Rouge Parish, inJul 1812. None of his sons seem to have created families of their own,so his line ofthe family, except for its blood, died with him.

The Arbours of Baton Rouge, themselves, may not have been Acadians but French Canadians. Francois Arbour, fils was born in Québec, not GreaterAcadia, and, despite his having lived amongst Acadian exiles in Franceand married an Acadian exile thereheW? 20s-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab», his link to Greater Acadia is a tenuous one based on suppositions. After immigrating from France, Francois, fils and his family settled in the BatonRouge area, and there his descendants remained. Interestingly, a number of families with a similarsurname, Harbour, definitely not Acadian, also settled in South Louisiana. Judging from the the number of slaves they held in the decades before the War Between the States,some of them were as wealthy as the Acadian Arbours ofEast Baton RougeParish:
Adonegy or Adonager Harbour married Anna Dalton or Queremos. Their daughter Anna married Anglo-American John Harelson of Virginia at Baton Rouge in September 1806. Their daughter Sally married Anglo-American LouisGardner at Baton Rouge in Jan 1806.Adonager probably was Anglo-American himself.
In Jul 1850, P. H. Harbour held 11 slaves on his Ascension Parish farm.Ten years later, in Jun 1860, he held 9 slaves on his farm in Ascension's Seventh Ward.
In Aug 1850, Pleasant J. Harbour owned 47 slaves on his Pointe Coupee Parish plantation, and 34 slaves on his East Feliciana Plantation, northeast of Baton Rouge.
At the same time, John A. Harbour held 47 slaves on his East Feliciana Parish plantation.
In Jun 1860, Wm. H. Harbour owned 7 slaves on his Pointe Coupee Parish farm.

Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Arthur followed his company to Virginia, but his service there wascut short byillness or injury. He wassent to a Richmond hospital in Oct 1861, and received a medical discharge the following month. He probably returned to Baton Rouge. The War took a terrible toll on the Arbour family's economic standing.After Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in Jan 1863, Federal forces controlling the lower Mississippi freed the slaves onevery plantation their forces could reach. This included the Arbour holdings in East Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes. Union navy gunboats shelledand burned dozens of plantations houses along the lower river. Afterthe War, the Arbours of Baton Rouge had to endure as best they could a free-labor postwar Southern economy. Dozens of Arbours can be foundtodayintheBaton Rouge area,most ofthem descendants of Frédéric the planter. Interesting note: As teenagers, Francois-Henry & Jeanne sailed to LA onthe same ship; their families, in fact, are next to one another on thepassenger list of Le Beaumont, family nos. 16 & 17. The ARBOURs went to Baton Rouge with most of the other immigrants aboard Le Beaumont. TheDAIGLEs also went to Baton Rouge but by 1788 had moved to Manchac/St-Gabriel, just downriver. This did not deter young Francois-Henry from marrying Jeanne, whom he may have known, & loved, since their childhood in France. Although his marriage was recorded at the St-Gabriel church, he probably was married in the Baton Rouge district where he lived. Notes:

After their wedding, Frederick and Adeline settled near family in BatonRouge, where they had 12 children, four daughters and eight sons. The couple was confirmed to be living in Baton Rouge in 1840,in 1850, and in 1860. Frederick became oneof the highly respected men of the East Baton Rouge and Iberville Parishes, and accumulated considerable wealth inthe lumber business, which he lost duringthe Civil War by refusing to take the oath of allegiance. The reason for this may haveto do with Frederick's love of the southern way of life. In Sep 1850, he owned 30 slaves, many of whom probably worked at his mills. There were two Arbour sawmills, one at Grosse Tete and one at Baton Rouge, which were located on barges moored on the river front.It is not clear whether the sawmills were owned jointly by the elder Frederic as well as his son Frederick, or by the son alone. It is said, however, that the younger Frederickbuilt his large Baton Rouge home of red cedar from Tennessee which hadbeen floated down the river for a proposed railroad which would have connected Baton Rouge and Port Gibson. When the plan for the railroad fell through, Frederick obtained the lumber for his home. This was probablyin about 1831 or 1832. An interesting note about Arbour heritage hereis that even though they were separated by more than 2,000 miles, Arbours from all branches of the family pursued their fate within the lumber industry. Frederick's house,known as the Big House, rested on whatis nowthe corner of First Street and Louisiana Avenue in Baton Rouge. Many years later, the railroad put tracks down quite near the house. In fact, they were so close that sparks from the coal-burningengines often ignited fires on the house. Thissad factis the reason why the house waslater torn down instead of being preserved. During the Civil War, lifein Baton Rouge became too risky for the family so Frederick sent the women and children to live in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. After the War,Fredericwas forced to attempt to regain his life out of salvaged war losses. These trying times were no doubt the reason that Frederick did not live much longer. Of Frederick's extensive landholdings in Baton Rouge, 10 acres were still registeredas the "estate of Frederick Arbour" and remained within the family through 1962. At that time, Tallulah Arbour retained custody of the deed and paid the annual taxes in the event thatthe family should ever want to do anything with the property.

As a boy, Frederick's father hired a tutor for him and his brothers, one Antoine Pujol. The young lads became well-educated in both French andEnglish. After their wedding, Frederick and Lodiska settled into the Big House in Baton Rouge, where theyhad nine children, five daughters and four sons. The family was confirmed to be living there in 1860. Shortly thereafter the US became engaged in a bitter Civil War. During the Civil War, Frederick is believed to have enlisted on 8 March 1862 at Iberville, Louisiana. Lieutenant Arbour served with Company D, 27th Louisiana Infantry. He was taken prisoner by the Union on 4 July 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and later reported for exchange on 1 April 1864 at Shreveport, Louisiana. Neither henor his widow lived long enough to collect his pension, which was arranged for Confederate soldiers in 1920. In fact, Frederick died just several years after the war. His widow lived another 40 years. Lodiska lived in Baton Rouge in 1900 and in 1910.In 1900, she lived at 609 St Louis Street with son Adolph. In 1910, shelived with daughter Edna and son-in-law Alfred PERSAC.

In the interim, the United States founditself involved in a Civil War and Bienvenue took up arms to fight forhis cause. Bienvenue enlisted on 1 September 1862 at Baton Rouge, alongside his brother Octave. He became a Private with Company A, Miles Legion, Louisiana Volunteers. On 2 May 1863, he was captured by the Union at Comite River, Louisiana. He was later paroled on 30 May 1863 at Grant's Island, just off Mobile, Alabama. After Bienvenue's death, Celestine moved to Plaquemine, Louisiana. She lived there in 1900, in 1910, andin 1920. 1920 was also the year that Celestine began to collect Bienvenue's veteran's pension from the Civil War- an amount of $8 per month.

As a boy, Octave's father hired a tutor for him and his brothers, one Antoine Pujol. The young lads became well-educated in both French and English. Octave married Susan Caroline Gayle on 4 or 5 December 1860 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge. Reverend W. E. M. Linfield officiated. Susan (aka Carrie Gayle) was born in Baton Rouge on 22 October 1839 to William Hull Gayle and Virginia Harney Elam. After their wedding, Octave and Carrie were the first to leave the Arbour flock. All of the others remained at the Big House with Frederic and Adeline, where French was used almost exclusively. Carrie spoke only English and was probably not very comfortable among them. Although Carrie was raisedin the Methodist-Espicopal faith,she and Octave raised all of their children in the Catholic Church, which Carrie later adopted for herself. Almost eight years after their wedding, Octave and Carrie's marriage was blessed - or revalidated - by the Roman Catholic Church on 28 March1868.On the same day, Carrie was also baptised a Catholic and the next day she was confirmed. Less than two years after their initial marriage, the Civil War began and Octave enlisted in the Confederate Army. Carriespent the war years with her parents a few miles outside of Baton Rouge. Upon his leaving, Carrie made the following entry in her bible: "Octave left me on the 20th of September 1862 to join the army. Left me alone with our little Willie." Octave volunteered for service on 1 September 1862 at Baton Rouge, alongside older brother Bienvenue. He eventuallyrose to the rank of Sergeant with Company A, Miles Legion, Louisiana Volunteers. His company later became part of Ogden's Louisiana Cavalry. At some point, his entire unitwas captured by the Union and he appearedon the Rolls of Prisoners of War. They were all paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, on 12 May 1865. In 1920, Octave's heirs became eligible for his veteran's pension of $8 per month. During the War, Octave seemsto have made at least one visit to Carrie during about June 1863, as their second son, Octave, was born in March 1864. Octave and Carrie eventually had 11 children, six daughters and five sons. They lived in Baton Rouge during the Census enumerations of 1870, 1880, and 1900. In 1870, they lived at 1 West Baton Rouge Street, which was actually the house of older brother Joseph and family. In 1880, they lived on Charles Street. In 1900, they lived at 805 St Ferdinand Street. On 27 January 1874, Octave was awarded a patent for an invention of his. His spike auger was made of iron and, as of 1988, resided in the Cliff Petersen Collection in Santa Monica, California. Octave's later life was in striking contrast to his antebellum boyhood.Afterthe lean, hard years of the Reconstruction, he became a prosperous banker. After a few years, however, the bank failed and he and his family lived in modest circumstances throughout the rest of his life while he struggled to repay depositorswith his own earnings.

OLD BATON ROUGE RESIDENTS
Yesterday death claimed three old residents of Baton Rouge . . . Mr. [Octav] Arbour was a Confederate soldier and was for many years an activefigure in the life of the city and parish. His lumberingand planting interests were at one time extensive.A pathetic incident of his latter days is told of his UCV connection. It was know that he was listed for one of the Daughters' crosses of honor. He felt that death was approaching and expressed the fear that his cross would not be received beforethe end. His cross was given him only a few weeks ago by the Joanna Waddill chapter.

As a boy, Arthur's father hired a tutor for him and his brothers, one Antoine Pujol. The young lads became well-educated in both French and English. As a young man, Arthur saw his country divided by Civil War and decided to volunteer. He enlisted on 7 June 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He was the first and the youngest of four brothers to sign-up. Private Arbour served with Company B, 7th Louisiana Infantry. He was injured in the line of duty on 8 October 1861 and was discharged by the Medical Examination Board on 5 November 1861 at Richmond. After their wedding, Arthur and Olivia settled in New Orleans, where they had at least their first seven children. The young family lived there in 1870 and in 1880, when theylived at 12 West New Orleans Street. They eventually had11 children, four daughters and seven sons. By 1900, they had moved toBaton Rouge, where they lived at 306 St Ferdinand Street. At the time of his military enlistment, Arthur reportedhis occupation as lawyer. In1920, Olivia was found living in Baton Rouge at 316 St Ferdinand Street. This was also the year she began collecting Arthur's veteran's pension - an amount of $8 per month.

24 Feb 1867 -- Henry Anthony ARBOUR was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,as the 6th of 8 children of Joseph Henry ARBOUR and Julia Caroline MAURIN. This particular line of ARBOURs came from Quebec to Louisiana by way of France. It is an interesting story in and of itself. Perhaps on 3March, we will profile Manny's great-grandfather Frederic ARBOUR and the tale will be told. Although baptized withthe name of Henry Anthony or Henri Antoine, he was known as Manny. How and when he became known bythis moniker, is still a mystery. On 10 Oct 1894, Manny married a young Louisiana woman by the name of Anna Ernestine BRIAN. After their wedding, Manny and Anna settled in Baton Rouge, where they had five children, 2 daughters and 3 sons. The young family lived in Baton Rouge in 1900, in 1910, and in 1920, at the home of Manny's spinster sister Clara. By 1930, they had purchased the home at 352 Saint Louis Street and sister Clara lived with them. Throughout this time, Manny seems to have beenemployed as an Associate of Fuqua Hardware Company in Baton Rouge. Hedied on 12 Jan 1936, at the age of 68. His widow Anna lived another 27years before dying on 22 Oct 1963, at the age of 89.

After their wedding, James and Lula settled in Baton Rouge, where they had three children before Lula's disppearance. She did not appear with her family in the Census of 1900. James and family continued to live in Baton Rouge and were found there in 1900, in 1910, and in 1920. In 1900, they lived at 503 Europe Street. In 1910, James lived with his daughter Nellie. In 1920, he livedwith his daughter Nellie and son-in-law Joseph BABIN at 906 GovernmentStreet. Lula's whereabouts are unknown this year. Perhaps the couple had separated.

According to David R. ARBOUR, James died in Baton Rouge, LA, on 08 Apr 1940. Also according to David R. ARBOUR, James was buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in Baton Rouge, LA.

Maude and Nap established their home in Baker, LA, where for many yearsUncle Nap -- among his many property holdings -- owned and operated the only store in town. Maude was a watercolor artist of some reknown. She was also skilled in sewing-- handembroidery and machine-sewing, as well as designing and making her clothes and designing and making quilts,tablecloths, etc. She was devoted to her nieces and nephews and was generous to them with gifts and entertainment. She alwayshad an open doorat her house and there were few long periods when she was without a houseguest -- sisters and cousins in the early years and nieces later on.Although Maude and Nap had no children of their own, they raised two of his nephews,Charlie DAY and Dr.Eric DAY, as well as his niece Bessie BROWN. Sarah BROWN, another niece they had taken to raise, died as a small child. Both Maude and Nap suffered long illnesses before their death. Nap was partially paralyzed and finallybedridden for a number ofyears and after his death Maude was incapacitated for several years. Throughout both illnesses, Maude's sister Sybil ARBOUR devoted her life to their care.

From a photograph of their house in Baker, LA: Their home is now gone. Home was on Camelia Avenue, Baker Louisiana. Mary Belle Horton Brown and Earl Brown lived in an apartment in this house while their eldest daughter was an infant. Photo says it was taken 5 January 1947 and the ditch is for the gas line being brought to Baker.

From "Baker the First 200 Years 1776-1996" . . .
No history of the City of Baker would be complete without mention of N.B. Brown: business, civic, educational, and religious leader in the Baker community. Napoleon Barfield Brown was the son of Thomas B. Brown and Sara Williams Brown who owned a large plantation on Plank Road east of the present city of Baker. This spacious home which stood on the site of property owned by Dr. E. W. Day Sr. burned years ago. Nap had a half sister Ella White and four Brown sisters: Ollie, Nettie, Bessie, andLena. He had one brother, Wilkins, who was generally spoken of as "Wicks" Brown. As a young man, Nap met, fell in love with, and married MaudArbour of Baton Rouge. The couple had no children of their own but hadconsiderable experience in parental care. The wife of Mr. Wicks died leaving two small girls, Bessie and Sarah. Lena, who had married CharlesDay of Baton Rouge, died one year after her husband, leaving two smallboys, Eric and Charlie. These four childreneventually came to live with Nap and Maud in their home in Baker. Sarah, a precious little girl, died at the age of four. Mr. Brown became a very successful business man. He first had a joint mercantile store with J. B. Merritt. The partnership ended and each went into business for himself. Both prospered. Mr.Brown was the sole owner of the cotton gin which did a flourishing business as long as cotton was king but when the boll-weevil dethroned King Cotton, the gin was closed. Mr. Brown helped to organize the BakerLand Company. This company bought land from Dr. E. B. Young and others. The company laid out streets, lots, five acre tracts, and advertised for prospective home owners. This venture was most profitable until Scenic Highway branched out from Scotlandville, and a road was constructed extending direct to the Baker area. The distance was shortened between theindustries in north Baton Rouge to the Baker area, where men could work in the industries and live with their families in Baker. Mr. andMrs. Brown were good neighbors. They lived next door to the Methodist Parsonage and saw that all went well with the minister's family. If there wasillness or any trouble, Mrs. Brown, an excellent cook, supplied the family with good food until theemergency was over. Many a minister's family left Baker with a little Maud namesake of their good friend and helper. Mr. Brown, although interested and a financial contributor to the Baker Methodist Church, was not a member of the congregation until aftera harrowing experience on the Hammond and Eastern Railway. While on the train, their coach was struck broad-side by a freight engine at a railroad crossing, which overturned their coach. Somehow Mr. Brown was separated from his wife. He searched diligently for her and finally contacted a member of the train crew. He said, "For God's sake, help me find my wife." They found her pinned under the coach. She was rescued and considering the enormity of the wreck, the Browns considered their injuries very slight. When Mr. Brown took the vows of the Baker Methodist Church, Mrs. Brown, then a Catholic, joined with him and worked in the Sunday School and with the Women's Organization. At one time, she was superintendent of the Sunday School. The many varied and complicated activities engaged in by Napoleon Barfield Brown finally took their toll. He became a confined invalid and spent the last months of hislife in a wheel chair, but he was mentally alert and interested in the "goings on" in the community he loved so well until the end. He died 4 September 1934. After N. B. Brown's death, Mrs. Brown went back into the Catholic Church.Her close relatives were of that faith, and she wanted to worship with her family.She had 4children

Sybil never married or had children. Asa young woman, she studied nursingatthe New Orleans Sanitarium, whichlater became the Presbyterian Hospital from which she graduated in October 1912. Initially, Sybil took a private nursing job in New Orleans. Throughout her life, Sybil took care not only of her patients but alsoherfamily in later years, tending to the needs of sister Maude and her husband Nap, as well as sister Benie. She lived in Jackson, Louisiana, at the time of her death.

03 May 1869 -- Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Edward Joseph ARBOUR wasthe eldest of 11 children of attorney Arthur B. ARBOUR and his wife Olivia Gallagher COMEAUX. Edward seems to have lived in NewOrleans virtually his entire life. In about 1897,he married 20-year old Mary Dora LeBLANC. They had 7 children together, 2 daughters and 5 sons. It is unclear what occupation Edward held for most ofhis life, as the only one found noted in records is as a paper carrier at State Paperin 1920. Edwardwas just 57-years old when he died in New Orleans on 09 January 1927. Mary Dora whereabouts are unknown after April 1930.

She was agriculture editor for many years until retirement in 1962. During her tenure, she was the recipient of many honors. Upon retirement, she was sent on official trip to South America. Marjorie ARBOUR, the first woman president of AAACE, was born in Baton Rouge in 1893. She began her career at Louisiana State in 1917 as a home demonstration agent.In 1918, she became assistant extension editor, and in 1941, was named editor. In 1922, she received aBA degree, and in 1925 an MA degree, bothin English from LSU. She taught journalism at LSU while serving in theextension editorial service. Shealso taught a course in home economicsjournalism at the University of Tennessee, and conducted special courses in journalism for teachers, ministers, and home economists. Progressive Farmer magazine named her 'Agricultural Woman of the Year' in 1948.In 1957, USDA presented her a Superior Service Award. She retired fromLouisiana State University 30 June 1962. In retirement, she served as a consultant to the Louisiana County Agents Association and did free-lance writing. She was a member of ThetaSigma Phi, Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon Sigma Phi and other organizations. She died in Baton Rouge, 20 November 1971, at the age of 78.

According to Clifford Gerard LeBLANC, Marjorie was born on 23 Aug 1892.Although reportedly buried in Hopp, LA, Marjorie seems to have a plot in Roselawn Cemetery in Baton Rouge, according to Find-A-Grave research.

Hunter and Georgina had two children. They must have divorced prior to 1913, as Georgina married Otto HARDENSTEIN on 20 January 1913, in BatonRouge. The two children of Hunter and Georgina stayed with their mother in Louisiana. Georgina later diedin Baton Rouge on 29 March 1930, at age 44. It seems as though Hunter moved to Texas after divorcing Georgina or perhaps his relationship with Myrtle is what precipitated their divorce. Hunter's great-grandson John feels that the enchanting Myrtleiswhat drew Hunter away from Georgina and Louisiana. Hunter and Myrtle later had a son. In 1920, the young family lived in Houston, Texas, at 803 Waverly Street. Perhaps our Hunter is the Hunter G. ARBOUR who was listed in the Houston City Directory in 1917 as a brakeman living at 4714 Eli Street.

According to David Rowland ARBOUR Jr., Hunter was born on 08 Mar 1881.

Although Hunter was supposed to have died in either Texas or Louisiana,there is no record of his death in either of the online indices for those States.

All of the LouisianaARBOURs apparently owe her a debt of gratitude for her strength and skill in remembering and recordingthe family history. "Tulie" was still enjoying birthdays in following years. A century of Scouts -- Girl Scouts mark 100 years of courage, confidence and character
This March, some 3.2 million Girl Scouts celebrate the 100th anniversary of the organization whose mission it is to build girls of courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place. With them in spirit will be the more than 50 million Girl Scout alumnae who enjoyed Girl Scouting during their childhood. "Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout," said 94-year-old Janice Carpenter, former Girl Scout leader, board member and two-term local council president. Girl Scouting in America started with one very traditional Southern woman, Juliette Gordon Low, who found herself with a host of nontraditional problems. Low, who was known as Daisy, lived a charmed childhood in a wealthy Savannah, GA,family. In 1886, she married a dashing British aristocrat, moved with him to England andset out on a life of travel and pleasure. Somehow things did not turn out the way Daisy Low had planned. She was childless, almost completely deaf, thousands of miles from family and friends, andburdened with a philandering husband who left her and then died beforetheir divorce was final. In her misery, Low was determined to find something worthwhile to do. In 1911, she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the former English general and war hero who had founded the Boy Scouts in 1908. The movement was so successful that Baden-Powell asked his sister,Agnes, to form a similar organization for girls.They called it the Girl Guides. The new Scouting movement became Low's life work. She returnedto Savannah and called a friend saying, "Come right over. I've got something for the girls of Savannah and all America and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight." That first Girl Scout troop meetingwas held 12 March 1912. By the time the United States entered WWI in April 1917, Girl Scouting had spread across the country, and its membershad become active volunteers for the war effort. According to a history of the first 50 years of Girl Scouting in Baton Rouge compiled byBetty Fentonin 1971, a group of girls who had camped near Port Vincent in the summer of 1921 met at the home of Mrs. L.U. Babin that November to form Baton Rouge's first Girl Scout troop. Their captain was Judith McGregor Pillow, who was assisted by Mildred Kearly, Rosalie Knox Creaghan,Marie Conrad, Margaret Reymond, Evelyn Sanders, TULAH ARBOUR, Edna Arnold Warner and Estelle Van Dervort Weimer. Three months later, the troop held its first fundraiser, a benefit performance at the Elks Theater ofamusical comedy, "The Houseboat on the Sticks." Proceeds from the event helped provide 100 steel cots for the Scouts to use at summer camp. A State-Times editorial for 27 May 1922, called the Girls Scouts "a step in the right direction" and a movement that "should have the encouragement and support of thepublic generally." The Girl Scout organization, the editorial said, "is based on the same high principles of honor and service (as the Boy Scouts); it requires the doing of definiteand practical tasks and rewards proficiency; it teaches the girls simple homeduties; it opens to them, as to the boys, the great out of doors, and inculcates truths that can be learned only at Nature's own school." In August 1922, the Girl Scoutsheld its first summer camp on the Amite River near Port Vincent. The camp was led by Claire Ramires, one of the early leaders of Scouting in Baton Rouge, with head nurseMaude Chambers. It lasted 10 days at a cost of $15 for each Girl Scout attending. The State-Times described the camp in detail and even reported on the only accident when Lucille Kean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Selby Kean, stumbled over a rope as she rushed to meet her parents and suffered a broken arm. The Scouts learned firstaid, participated in flag exercises, said grace at mealtime, and repeated the Lord's Prayer around a campfire eachnight. According to written accounts by each tent, also published in the State-Times, the girls enjoyed hiking, fishing, swimmingandrowing; had two dances; and did "stunts." Tent IV wrote that "one special fad ofthe camp was to have a small pipe in your mouth all the time." In 1926, Ella V. Aldrich was hired as the first paid local director, and St James Episcopal Church donated space for headquarters in its Parish House. That same year, Joyce Washburn received a silver lifesaving cross, the second highest recognition a Scout could receive from the National Council of Girl Scouts, for saving her younger sister froma fire, and a troopwas organized at the Louisiana State School for the Blind. Girl Scouts learned such homemaking skills as canningand preserving from mothers as well as experts including Eva M. Pender, of the Douglas Pectin Corp., who taught members ofTroops 1, 2,3,6, 7, and 8 how to make jellyand jam from fresh fruit, dried fruit and vegetables. According to Fenton's history, summer camp was cancelled in 1927 because of the historic flood. The decade of the 1930s saw an increase in membership and participation in Girl Scouting. Headquarters moved to a room in the home ofEleanor Witter on Lafayette Street. Troop 1 held an annual junior flower show, and a telephone was installed at the Girl Scout headquarters. By31 Dec 1936, membershipwas 242 girls in13troops and 25 Brownies in one Brownie troop. In July 1939, Baton Rouge's first black Girl Scout troop of 19 girls from St Francis Xavier School was organized under the leadership of Mary P. Bird assisted by Theresa BirdandEuniceRichard. Laterthatyear, a Girl Scout hut was built at St Joseph's Academy to be used by six troops, and a room and kitchenwere designated at North Highlands School for use by three troops. The 1940s saw an increase in blacks participatingin GirlScouting withnew troopsat Hall's Chapel, St Mark United Methodist Church, and Mount ZionFirst Baptist Church directedby Mrs. I.N. Givens, Mrs. V.D. Perkins, Mrs. M.D. Huggins, Mrs. M.N. Ringgold, Mrs. E.E. Baranco and others. In 1945, the firstGirl Scout cookie sale brought in $710 with cookies sold in cans at 40 cents each.Members of the black troops made Christmas cards for soldiers overseas. Bythat December, there were 212 girls in 11 Brownie troops, 581 girlsin 37 intermediate troops and 5 6 girls in five senior troops. At the annual meeting on 28 April 1947,Helen Wilkerson announced that a permanent campsite of 100 acres had been donated to the Girl Scouts by Lloyd J. Cobb, a St Francisville cattleman and businessman. Theproperty, part of Clover HillPlantation on Alexander Creek, was namedCampMarydale. In a simple ceremony on 15 Jan 1948, Cobb's daughter, Mary, 12, presented the deed to the property to Betty Fortenberry, Margaret Morgan and MarthaCatchings, who received it on behalfof theGirlScouts. On 15 May 1948, the GirlScouts begana citywide drive to raise $40,000 for a deep water well, a sleeping unit of three cabins, restoration of the plantationlodge to provide kitchen and dining facilities, a director's room and office, and a workroom. Members of the EastBaton Rouge Parish Medical Society Auxiliary pledged funds for a two-bed infirmary. Funds from the I.H. Gottlieb Memorial Association provided the Rebecca Gottlieb Cottage, with the understanding that in alternate yearsan orphan fromtheProtestant Home or the Catholic Orphanage would be sent to camp for two weeks. Camp Marydale was officially dedicated on 19 June 1949. In October 1952, the lodge at Camp Marydale was destroyed by fire. Because the campwas notfullyinsured,thelocal Girl Scout organization was forced to hold another major fundraising campaign for a new dining hall and kitchen, an infirmary, staff living quarters, and an administrative office as well as a new unitof five camper cabins, astaffcabin,acentral washhouse and a lodge. In1959, 11-year-old Toni Bienvenu won a contest to select a new council name for the Baton Rouge Girl Scouts. She chose Audubon Council because the previous summer, while atMarydale, she had toured Oakley,where John James Audubon lived and taught. Durinda Robinson became a Brownie Scout in 1949 with a troop at the Southern University Lab School. When that troop disbanded, she moved to Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church, which sponsored four troops. "I went all the way up in Girl Scouting," said Robinson, who participated for 11 years. Whenshe started in Scouting, the troops were segregated by race, and blackGirl Scouts were not welcomed at Camp Marydale. Thatchangedin the summer of 1966, when79 girls attended a session at the camp. "It was a bigthing," Robinson said. Her camp experience was almost ruined when she cut through her hand with a kitchen knife while making Girl Scout stew."My mother was ahome economist, and here Iwascuttingmy handwith a knife," she said. The camp staff took Robinson to St Francisville for six stitches. "That cut out swimming for the rest of the camp," she said. But even with the accident, campturnedout to be awonderful experiencefor Robinson, whosecabin mates took care of her, combed her hair, andhelped her shower. "You didn't go home, but you went back to camp because that's what a Girl Scout would do," said Natalie Miller, who isserving asleaderof her fourth troop. "My first troopScoutsare all gettingmarried now," she said, "and my second troop is finishing college and graduate school." She is amazed at how much her Scouts have accomplished. "They have all studied abroad and had wonderfulinternships," she said. "Thereis no limitto their dreams. They just had it in them." Miller believes that one of the greatest learning experiences of Girl Scouting is from the cookie sales. "You set a budget, and you can earnthe money. If you doit right, the financial education itteachesthese girls isabsolutely amazing." Carpenter had served as a Scout volunteer and executive director in Oklahoma, when she and her husband moved to Baton Rouge in 1957. One day, sheran into Betty Phelps, whom she had met at GirlScout training in Santa Fe, NM. Phelps asked Carpenter to help with Scout training in Baton Rouge. "I was off and running," Carpenter said. As a board member, Carpenter was asked to speakto neighbors in Broadmoor on the value of Scouting. The neighbors said that theyneeded a leader."So I became a leader," Carpenter said. In her positions of leadership in the Audubon Council, Carpenter worked with the board to integratetheScoutprogram throughthe Promisein Action Committee to further the Scout belief in serving all girls. ForCarpenter, the most important part of Scouting is the outdoorprogram. "If you took 'outing' out of Scouting, you would take away three-fourthsof the program," she said. Nowhere is the outdoor program more successful than atCamp Marydale which, over the years, has grown from a small cluster of cabins to a first-ratecamp offering a large variety of camp activities including a top-notchequestrian program. "Janice Mackey was the executive director when we got the horses," Carpenter said. "Someof the men were more practical. They realized that the horses needed to be fed, but people donated the horses, and it has been going ever since." Camp Marydaleis one of only afewGirlsScout camps with an equestrianprogram. It is a completecamping experience with horses, archery, a new dining hall, canoeing, trails, a swimming pool, and a Challenge Course. "Camp Marydale is where dreams come true in South Louisiana,"saidMiller, whooften returns to Marydale with her former Scouts. "Even the marriedones now come with me," she said. "They always weara bandanna. Nothing says I am a Girl Scout on the way to camp than putting on a bandanna." Former Fund Development Associate Cathy Pottschmidt says that certain cabins are "almost arite of passage.""The large and roomy ones with bathroom facilities inside are for the youngerones," she said."As the girls get older, they want to be in the cabins in the trees, in themorerusticcabins." Anotherrite of passage is the equestrian program, which isopen to girls in the fourthgrade and older. "They wait and wait to ride thehorses," Miller said. About six years ago, the Girl Scouts of the USA consolidated individualcouncilsthroughout the country. "The premisewas that if wehad fewer councils,wewould have larger community support," said JackieAlexander, CEOof GirlScouts Louisiana East, the group of 23 parishes in which the old Audubon Council troops nowbelong. As part of the consolidation, some309 councilswere combined tocreate 109councils."One reason is to offer a more unified Girl Scout leadership experience," said MarianneAddy, vice president of communications and development. "Some girls insmaller groups might not get the same leadership experience." She believesthat oneofthegreatadvantages of Girl Scouting is that it is "extremely affordable." "The cookie program is the way to earn the money to do the wonderfulthings they can doin Girl Scouting," Addysaid. "Financialassistance isavailable.No girlis turned away because shecannotafford to be a Girl Scout."

She is survived by a sister, Tallulah Arbour of Baton Rouge; three nephews, Joseph H. Arbour and wife Evelyn of Baton Rouge, Frank Brian Arbour and wife Bennett Ann, and Willard Arbour and wife Lisa, all of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins by marriage and by blood. Surviving also are her faithful employee, John Hadden; and devoted nephew, John Troth. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Anna Brian Arbour; and brothers, Frank Brian Arbour, Willard L. Arbour, and Joseph H. Arbour Sr. Pallbearers will be Johnny Hadden, John Troth, Joseph H. Arbour Jr., Brian Arbour, Hardy Brian, and Willard Arbour. Special thanks are given to her loyal and longtime caregivers for their loving concern over the many years, without whom her life would have been different. 18 Mar 1906 -- Born in Plaquemine, Louisiana, Warren Benedict ARBOUR was precisely in the middle of 13 children born to John Earl ARBOUR and Annette Blanche BERGERON, proving that even ARBOURs who live in the US can be prolific. On 22 Jul 1905, Warren married 20-year old Mattie Mary SHARON. Warren and Mattie had 3 children, 2 daughters and a son. In 1930, the young family lived in Plaquemine, where they rented a house for $6 per month. Warren worked as a laborer in a lumber mill, as so many of the ARBOURs have done. In 1935, Warren and Mattie moved across the country and settled in Vancouver,Washington, where Warren owned and operated Arbour's Grocery in downtown until the late 1950s. On 06 Jan 1988, Warren died in Portland, Oregon, and was buried in St James Acres in Vancouver. Mattie followed him there when she died on 02 Dec 1997. Today they are responsible for at least 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

08 Mar 1900 - Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Arthur Francis ARBOUR wasthe 2nd of 7 children of Edward Joseph ARBOUR and Mary Dora LEBLANC. Arthur worked as a laborer in a stove mill until followingthe roots his father laid out before him as a newspaper carrier. Twenty-four year oldArthur then married 19-year old Marion LEBLANC somewhere in Louisiana in about 1924. They had a son Arthur JosephARBOUR in 1928. However, tragedy struck the young family only a handful of years after this. According to the newspaper report of 06 Aug 1900, here is what happened:
CRASH IN LOUISIANA TAKES LIVES OF FIVE
New Orleans, 6 Aug -- Trapped in the blazing wreckage of an overturned automobile, five persons were burned to death 18 miles south of here today. One other was burned possibly fatally. All were members of well-known New Orleans families. The dead:Mrs. A. F. Bernius, wife of a local pharmicist; her granddaughter, Laura Bernius, 4; Mrs. Arthur Arbour andher son, Arthur Arbour Jr.; and Mrs. Conrad Bernius, 28, daughter-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Bernius. The injured: A. F. Bernius, husbandofMrs. Bernius, and Mrs. Conrad Bernius, his daughter-in-law. Witnesses told officers they believed the accident and fire was caused by a blowout.
Thus, Marion and little Arthur died in Aug 1936, leaving Arthur a youngwidower without a family. There is no evidence that Arthur ever remarried or had any other children. He passed away in New Orleans in Aug 1963, at the age of 63.

This is an appeal from a judgment taken on confirmation of default. Theplaintiff brought suit against her husband for divorce, custody of their children and alimony. The plaintiff alleged that her husband has carried on an illicit love affair withone Mary Veca, wife of F. Fowler, for the past five years; that he is living in open adultery with Mary Fowler; that a child was born of this illicit relationship whose birth registration shows the father to be Frank Joseph Murray, who is no otherthan Francis A. Murray, the defendant; that her husband admitted to her the illicit relationship and that he was living in open adultery with Mary Fowler. She asked for judgment of divorce, custody of the children and alimony. The defendant failedtoanswer or oppose the suit and the plaintiff produced evidence to support her demands on confirmation of default. The lower court gave judgment granting the plaintiff a divorce, custody of the children and ordered the defendant to pay the plaintiff$30a week alimony. The defendant has appealed. The defendant contends thatthe evidence is insufficient to support the judgment. He takes the position that the evidence is not sufficient to sustain a divorce on the ground of adultery. The plaintiff and her sister-in-law testified that they made an investigation in the neighborhood where the defendant allegedly lived in open adultery with Mary Fowlerand were told that Mr. and Mrs. Murray lived at 2514 Columbus Street, which is the addressof MaryFowler. They said that they had made inquiry at the corner bar and a grocery store concerning the defendant and had watched a car, which they claim was the defendant's, parked in front of 2514 Columbus Street. They testified that they had never seen the defendant in that neighborhood. The plaintiff said that the defendant admitted to her that he had been living in open adultery with Mary Fowler and that a child had been born from thisillicit relationship. The record contains a birthcertificateshowing a child was born to Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Murray. There is no evidence in the record to support the plaintiff's allegations that F. J. Murray and Francis A. Murray are one andthe same person nor is there anypositive proof that thedefendant is the person residing with Mary Fowler at 2514 Columbus Street. The admission of the defendant that he was living in open adultery with another woman is not sufficient evidence to authorize the granting of a divorce. The mere acknowledgment of thetruth of the facts alleged to have been made by either of the parties even if it were in the form of an authentic act can never be deemed sufficient foundation for a decree of divorce. Harman v. McLeland, 16 La. 26. It is stated in the opinion of that case: "In such serious matters, the law requires more than the simple confession of one of the parties to dissolve forever the bonds of matrimony between them;facts must be shown, and such facts as will authorize a court of justice to declare that the interference of the law is absolutely necessary. The judgment must be rendered `en grande connaisance de cause', as Pothier says; and the mere acknowledgment of the truth of the facts alleged, madeby either of the parties, even in an authentic act, can never be deemed sufficient to be the foundation of a decree of separation of bed and board and afortiori of a divorce. Pothier, Contrat de Marriage, Vol. 2, Nos. 517 and 518." In the case of Mack v. Handy, the court cited the caseof Harman v. McLeland, supra, and stated that, "Courts may, without impropriety, entertain such proof, in corroboration of other proven facts, fromwhich adultery may be inferred; but not as substantive evidence. Such proof is insufficient,of itself, toconvict the defendant." In the case ofSiebert v. Klapper, the court held that there was no confession by thedefendant and that hisprior statements were not sufficient to sustain the charge set forth in the petition and, "The testimony to show thatafact was acknowledged is not admissible in evidence." All other evidence in the record is in the nature of hearsay and soindefinite, if admissible, that it does not prove the defendant was guilty of adultery. It is well settled that theproof of adultery must be clear and conclusive to warrant the granting of a divorce. Salles v. Salles; Clark v. Clark;Raynerv. Rayner; Meyer v. Hackler; Clay v. Clay. Under the provisions of Article 312 of the Code of Practice, judgment bydefaultmaybe enteredupon proof of the demand but the proof in cases of divorce on the ground of adultery must be preciseasto time, place and the person involved.The proof presented by the plaintiff in this case is not sufficient tosupport a judgment of divorce based on the ground of adultery. For thereasons assigned, the judgment is annulled and set aside and the suit is dismissed as of nonsuit. Cost to be paid by the plaintiff-appellee.she had 2 children with Mr Murray

Donald K. Arbour, Sr., 90, of Watson, Louisiana went to heaven to meet our Lord and Savior on 10 January 2014. He was born in Baton Rouge to the late Clarence and Ida May Arbour on 18 August 1923. Donald was preceded in death by his beloved wife of54 years, Ida Lee Thames Arbour. He was also preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers, all of Baton Rouge. He is survived by two sons, Donald K. Arbour, Jr., and hiswife, Vicki Hancock Arbour; and Barry C. Arbour and hiswife, MicheleMalone Arbour. He had four grandchildren: Donna Lane and husband Chad, Vince Arbour and wife Kristy, April and Alison Arbour. Four great-grandchildren: Taylor and Chase Lane and Victoria and Garrett Arbour. He was also survivedby extended family members, IB and Betty Thames, of Pineville; Juanita Cowart, Beverely and Henrietta Thames, all of Watson, numerous nieces and nephews. On 10 Sep 1948, Gordon re-registered for the Draft. On that date, he was described as 5'8" and 163 lbs, with brown eyes, black hair, and a ruddy complexion. He was noted as having a scar on his lip. His mother wasrecorded as his next of kin. He claimed to have been rejected for service in 1943.
