Immigration: 1865 from Canada to the USA
* Note:During the Census in Jan 1851, Joseph and Hildegonde were already living together, two doors down from her parents -- even though they were not yet married. Joseph's age was recorded as 36, while Hildegonde's was 17. Of course, this does notseem to make sense in light of Joseph's marriage to Apolline. --> Joseph and Hildegonde were probably living with or on the property of her parents. Furthermore, even though the Census was supposed to be based on data of Jan 1851, sometimes the enumerator didn't actually visit until 1852. As the individual pages are not dated, we have no way of knowing when the information was recorded. The young couple could very well have been legally married by the time the Census was taken.
During the 1870 Census, Joseph and family lived in Chicago. Also livingin their house was the following family:
Napoleon BUBEAU, 21, b Can; wife Cesarine, 22, b Can; dau Mary, 2, b IL; son Napoleon, b Jan 1870 IL. Napoleon was a bricklayer who owned $100worth of personal items. Who is this family? Is Napoleona son-in-law of Joseph? A nephew? --> Perhaps it is just a case of living in a duplexwith the same house number.
According to BLM Land Records, after arriving in Montana, Joseph purchased some property:

WOMAN BRUTALLY BEATEN WITH POKER
When Daniel Arbour is arraigned before Judge Boyle this morning it is more than probable that he will get a severe punishment in the shape of a jail sentence, as Judge Boyle has no use for a man who will strike a woman and Arbour is charged with brutally assaulting Mrs. John Hayes, awidow, who lives in Cabin 35 on the Hesperus lode. The woman was so severely beaten with a heavy poker that she isnow confined to her bed under the care of Dr. Ignatius Donnelly. Arbour is a prisoner in the cityjail. According to the story of the Hayes woman, she has been feeding and lodging Arbour for years. She said she has made every effort to get rid of him, but without success. Frequently, she claims, Arbour has assaulted her and threatened her life.It appears that when Arbour returned home late last Saturday, he was in a state not bordering on absolute sobriety. He became angered at the Hayes woman and a quarrel followed. Inorder to emphasize the end of his argument, Arbour caught up a pokerand, it is said, belabored the head and shoulders of the Hayes woman, finally knocking her to the floor. The screams of the woman attracted the neighbors, and Arbour made himself scarce. The neighbors say that the Hayes woman was badly hurt and they sent for Dr. Donnelly. He found three ugly wounds made by the poker. One was on the scalp, a second on the forehead, and a third over the right eyebrow. There were several bruises on the shoulders in addition. After the wounds had been dressed, the woman grew so weak that it was necessary for her to take to her bed. Complaint of the assault was made to the police yesterday by the neighborsof the Hayes woman, and Policemen McGillie and Farrell went in search for Arbour. After several hours, thealleged brutal assailant of the Hayes woman was arrested. Being unable to furnish bonds to secure his release, he was locked up to await trial. If the Hayes woman is not in condition to comeinto court this morning to prosecute Arbour, the casewillhave to go over for a few days.

MUST FACE ASSAULT CHARGE -- Arbour, Alleged Brutal Assailant of Woman, Will Be Prosecuted to Full Extent of Law
Daniel M. Arbour, who was arrested last Sunday charged with committing a brutal assult with a poker upon Mrs. John Hayes, a widow who has kepthouse for him for a long time, was yesterday formally charged at the county attorney's office withsecond degree assault. Dr. Ignatius Donnelly, county physician, who has been in daily attendance upon the woman, is the complaining witness. Although still confined to her bed, Mrs. Hayes is resting easily and gradually recovering. The complaint was filedin Justice Corrigan's court in Walkerville, where Arbour will be arraigned and thence probably taken to the county jail to await preliminary examination. According to the complaint, the Hayes woman must have suffered brutal abuse at the hands of Arbour. As a result of the alleged attack with the poker, she bears three ugly wounds upon her head and face and several bruises over her shoulders. It is declared the woman was knocked to the floor by the blows of Arbour. This was the return for several years of unrequited care she had given the man. Assistant County Attorney Culerian [sp?], who issued the complaint, said that the defendantwould be punished to the full extent of the law.

HER HEAD BRUTALLY CUT -- ALLEGED ASSAILANT OF MRS. JOHN HAYES MUST STAND TRIAL -- Daniel M. Arbour is Bound Over to the District Court on a Charge of Assault as a Result of Examination Before Magistrate
The evidence brought out yesterday in the case of Daniel M. Arbour, charged with second degree assault, tended to show that the alleged beating of Mrs. John Hayes, on the night of Saturday 4 April last, was most brutal and inhuman. The victim of the man's alleged assault, with a poker, it was said, was in the Walkerville justice court yesterday offeringas her strongest testimony against the defendant the three-inch long scar on her forehead, which plainly showed where the sevenstitches had been taken. She testified that Arbour administered the blow that cut herhead open. As a result of theexamination, which was held by Justice Patrick Colligan, Arbour was bound over to the district court on $500 bonds. His attemptto secure bondsmen was futile up to a late hour and he was confined to the county jail. Mrs. Hayes, the victim of the alleged assault, told a pitiful story of abuse upon the witness stand. She said that for eight years she had been housekeeping for Arbour down in herlittle home, 35 on the Hesperus lode, and that until lately the friendliest relations had existed between them, but that on the Saturday night in question, he came home under the influence of liquor and for some imaginary grievance attacked her. Her face was turned, she testified, whenthe blow was struck, and she did not know what happened after that. Mrs. Nellie Williams, one of the neighbors, thentestified that she entered the house and there found that Mrs. Hayes was confined to her bedand very weak. There were clots of blood, she said, all over the floor. Dr.Ignatius Donnelly was summonedto dress the wounds. He gave evidence asto the serious nature and told of the force of the blowthat must have been given to inflict such a deep cutwith a blunt instrument. There were several wounds, he said, and a number of bruises on the woman's headand shoulders. The worst was, he testified, over the right eye, extending in a halfcircle from a point between the eyes and up and aroundthe temple. The skin and flesh, he said, was laid back over the eye. Arbourmade no defense and was bound over to the district court and committedto the care of the sheriff's office to await trial. An information will be filed against him within aday or two.

"GIVE ME THE PAPERS," SAYS ASPIRANT, BUT GETS BLOW
In an argument over "the woman in the case," Dan Arbour, 856 East Mercury, and John Hart were yesterday taken to the city jail, Arbour on an assault charged preferred by Hart, who in turn was accusedof breaking inwindows in Arbour's cabin after thewoman had left Hart for his rival. At the station, Hart displayed a badly bruised head, the result of blows from a blunt instrument wielded by Arbour, he said. "Give me the papers" is the remark credited to Hart when he met his rivaland the womanearly yesterday. Evidently he did not get the papers or the woman, for he beat a retreat under punishment and the police were called. Both men are willing to be jailed to appear against each other this morning.

AFTER MANY YEARS DIVORCE FOLLOWS -- Arbour Talks About a "Third Party" in the Case -- Married Twenty-Two Years
After having been married for more than 22 years and having grown children, Fred Arbour obtained a divorce from Ida A. Arbour in Judge McClernan's department of the district court yesterday. The Arbours were married in Melrose, 12 May 1887, and Arbour testified yesterday that his wife left him 7 Feb 1908, after telling him that she could not live with him any longer and intended to support herself. It was agreed that he should have the children and take care of them. Arbour saidthat there hadbeen no trouble and his wife simply said she would not live with him any longer, but being urged by the court for a better explanation, Arbour said there was a "third party" in the case. "A man?" inquired Judge McClernan. "Yes,sir."

FRED ARBOUR'S WIFE LEFT HIM AFTER WEDDED CAREER OF TWENTY-TWO YEARS
In divorce case, husband testifies that his spouse found an affinity, although she is advanced in years and has several grown children
Twenty-two years ago Fred Arbour and Ida A. Arbour were united in marriage at Melrose in this county, and yesterday Arbour gave his testimony in Judge McClernan's court in a suit for divorce on the ground of dissertion. It was alleged that Mrs. Arbour left her husband last year although there was no cause or provocation for the act. She did not answer in the case and a default was granted againsther. The plaintiff testified positively that he had never beat or struck his wife orgave her any other reason to leave him.
Ida deserted Fred and their children on 7 Feb 1908. Fred and Ida eventually divorced over her extramarital relationship with George SEYMER, whom Ida later married. During the proceedings, George SEYMORE (spelling in court records) bit off Fred's middle finger on his left hand. Fred was awarded damages of $2000 plus the $8.70 cost of his suit. [from Divorce Decree, newspaper reports, and Sunny HOWER]
After the public proclamations in the paper, one must wonder how Fred felt. Was he embarassed to have his personal life displayed to the public? Or did he feel vindicated that he had done nothing wrong and that Ida was the one made to appearunsavory?

1887 -- 01 Jun -- Dillon Tribune column notes, "On last Sunday afternoon Fred Arbour, while up on Lion mountain, invited his wife and Mrs. Papa to take a ride down the tramway with him. Everything went well until they struck the steep pitch, just above Greenwood, when the speed of thecar became so great that Fred must have got scared and turned the brake the wrong way, and the car jumped the track and threw Fred and Mrs. Papa against the timbers of the snow shed. The latter wasrendered unconscious and remained so for two hours, but is now much better. Dr. James L. Jones was called in to attend her case and reports her on the mend. Fred Arbour received a deep cut in his forehead and has not yet (Wednesday) fully recovered his consciousness. Dr. Raymond Mitchell is attending upon him and reports some improvement. Mrs. Arbour only received a slight scratch on the face. All these parties can "thank their stars" that they got off as lucky as they did. The wonder is that one of them has left to tell the story."

Remi -- similar to his father before him -- experienced much tragedy inhis married life. Five children were born to him and Exilda, but at least four died before age 7. Then Remi's young bride died at age 33. Perhaps this explains why Remi himselflived only until age 47.
In 1899, Remi owned a hotel known as Turf House at 629 St-Lawrence St in Montreal, QC, according to Morrey's Classified Business Directory, 1899-1900.

Henry Roman died on Sunday from the effects of a blow received from oneArbour, a neighbor, in Montreal. Arbour declares that Roman first struck him and that the fatal knock was given in self-defence.
From Denis ARBOUR via email on 21 May 2011: I think I found who he is. His name is Rémi ARBOUR, probably a son of Norbert ARBOUR and ÉlisabethPOULIN. I found the story in "La Patrie". According tothe newpaper, Harry ROMAN and Rémi ARBOURgotinto a de dareré recsaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»fight because workers removing snow from the roof of Rémi's house let some of it fall on Harry's property. Harry hit Rémi several times on the shoulders and on the head until the shovel broke. FUTILE QUARREL Which results in a death of a citizen of this city and puts another's life in jeopardy
REGRETTABLE CONFLICT BETWEEN TWO NEIGHBORS The verdict of the coroner is "Justifiable Homicide"
We announced Saturday that Mr. Harry Roman, a well-known merchant of St-Laurent Street, had been transported to the General Hospital followingwounds he had received during the course of a brawl. However, we must announce today that Mr. Roman succumbed to his injuries, which gives tothis business a regrettable importance. On the other side, an adversary of Mr. Roman, Mr. Remi Arbour, the well-known owner of the "Turf House" on the corner of Roy and St-Laurent Street, is in an extremely precarious state as a consequence of the wounds he received. His condition is such as one despairs to save it, and the Abbe [Troie], priest of Notre-Dame, was destined for his bedside this morning to give him Last Rites. As we already mentioned, Mr. Roman was occupied removing the snow from his pavement, Friday morning, when the quarrel occurred. Mr. Arbour was a little further along, observing workmen who worked on the roof ofhis house. Part of snow that they removed fell on the property beside Mr. Roman, who protested and chastized Mr. Arbour. He counteracted and from words came the blows and from there the consequences which alreadybrought the death of Mr. Roman and which put Mr. Arbour in an unknown state. Here are the details of this unhappy business, details which we collected through the coroner's inquest which took place this morning, at the General Hospital. The jury that was sworn in, was made up as follows: Misters Jos. Nantel, 37 Amherst; Geo. [Margoli..], 14 Crescent; Gust. Fishchel, 28 Crescent; Joseph Picard, 50 Hôtel de Ville; Jos. C. Bourke, 894 Ste-Catherine; Hugh Heron, [204] Cadieux; Wallace Bell, [810] St-Laurent; John Thomson, 201 Cherrier; Jos. A. Arcand, 150 Sanguinet; Albert Prévost, 214 St-Hubert;vde dareré recsaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»Lucien Gagnon, 129 St-Laurent; Geo. [Ste...], 522 1/2 Craig;Art. Bushnel, 57 Mayor; Sydney Levine, 16A Université; Geo. Kennedy, 808 St-Laurent. Mr. Suryeyer, assisted by M. D. MacMaster, represented the family of Mr. Arbour. Mr. J. Crankshaw appea;vde dareré recsaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab»red for the Roman family. The first witness was Dr. Wyatt Johnston who says that he made the autopsy and that he noted two fractures behind the head close to the left ear. The cranium was fragile. In answer to Mr. MacMaster, the witness says that the victim appeared 53-years old. He did not visit the place where the accident occurred. He knows however that pavement is often dangerous. He cannot say, after an examination of the wounds, how the accident occurred. The victim did not have external marks. Generally a blow with a stick produces a cut. The McLaughlin detective then produced the handle of a broken shovel given to himby Miss Sourkes, 633 rue St-Laurent. Heis the one who was charged withacquiring details of the brawl. Invitedto examine the handle of shovel, Dr. Johnston answered that the wounds could have been caused by this instrument, but in his opinion, it was more probable that they werecaused by a fall. The instrument is very light and would have needed a violentblow. In answerto series of questions from Mr. Macmaster, the doctorsaid that he would not know for sure without making an experiment. He told Mr. Crankshaw thata blowcombinedwith the fall could have caused thewounds. Mr. Samuel Roman, brotherof the late man, was then sworn in. He added that he does not know anything personally about the accident. He learned about it Friday morning and he returned to the hospital to seethe victim and did not have an enough complete knowledge to reportthe details of the regrettable business. His brother was the owner of a store close to the establishment of Mr. Arbour. The young girl Pearle Sourkes wasthenext witness. She lives at539 rue St-Laurent. She knew thevictim and it is she who produced the handle of shovel and gave it to the detective. She was employed at Mr. Roman's and at the request of the detective gave him the instrument.Atthe time of the accident, she was inside the store and Mr. Roman was occupied removing snow on the outside. She heard an argument outside, but she could distinguish what only one of them said. A few minutes later, she looked and saw Mr. Arbourin asnowdrift. She could notexactly say theposition of the two men. Aftera few moments, she saw Mr. Roman turning to take issue with a witness. At this time, Mr. Arbour advanced with the handle of shovel and gave ablow to his adversarywho then collapsed. She went to him to help him get up.Hewas trembling but said that it would be nothing and that hewould recover promptly. There were several people there whom she cannot name. She does not know if Mr. Arbour heldthe shovelin his hand before the last incident. When sheleft, she thoughtshe heard Mr. Roman say: "You heard what this man hassaid."After being questioned, Mr. Roman sat down and said that he felt better. Some time afterwards, he was vomiting, and, on his order, she went to telephone his brother. Shereturned andthentelephoned a second time. The brother of the victim arrivedafter these requests. An ambulance was called a little later and the casualtywas transported to theGeneralHospital. She had not see Mr. Arbour since then. In answer toMr. MacMaster, the witness said that the victim complained about from Mr. Arbour. When he was struck, the victim wore a soft hat. He collapsed and his head did not touch the ground. She was notthere when Mr. Arbour was struck, and she does not know anything of what occurred.Mr. Albert E. Taylor said that knew the two men alittle, and he observed the brawl. He saw that one man removed snow off the roofat Mr. Arbour's.Mr. Roman removed snow on his pavement. Part of the snow fell on the propertyof Mr. Roman. It seems thatthere was a quarrel between the two men. Hesaw Mr. Roman strike Mr. Arbour twice with his shovel. The second blow was more violent than the first, because the shovel had broken. He believes that he struck a third blow, and the two men began wrestling on the ground. Mr. Roman tried tostill strike Mr. Arbour, then he lost his instrument. The two men got up and Mr.Arbour entered his own establishment. He saw nothing more, and he did not give anyimportance to the incident that he believedfutile. The witness was onthe other side of the street, and he understood nothing of what was said. The first blow reachedMr.Arbour on his shoulder. The second blow reached his head and this is when the shovel broke. It is certain that a third blow wasdelivered, but he cannot say if Mr. Arbour washit. The fourth time that the handle was raised, it was Mr. Arbourwho was the attacker. Mr. Arbour had no instrument in his hand at the time when the battle started. JosephBernard, 263 Cadieux, wasthenext witness. He saw all the details ofthe brawl. At the beginning, a young girl tried to pass, and Mr. Arbourtook her by the arm and told her to pass in the street. Mr. Roman told the young girl to pass straight, adding that the hotel owners encroached toomuch and seemed masters of the city.Mr. Arbour came towards him and it was at this moment that Mr. Roman struck five or six times. On the sixth blow, Mr. Roman fell and his head struck the corner of his door. Mr.Arbour raised and dropped on his headthe stick which he seized. He thenentered his own establishment.Dr. J.W. Vipond, 905 rue Dorchester, has treated Mr. Arbour for three months. He was too weak to strike a serious blow. He did not believethatArbourcould have struck aserious blow withthe stick that wasproduced.Several other witnesseswere interviewed who corroborated all that precedes. After hearing the testimony, the jury returned a verdict of "justifiable homicide." Mr.Arbouris ina mostprecarious state and his death is awaitedfrom one moment tothenext.

We announced on Saturday that Mr. Harry Roman, a well-known merchant ofSt. Laurent Street, was transported to the General Hospital as a result of injuries he received during a fight. Now, we announce today that Mr. Roman died of his injuries, whichgives to this matter a sad importance. On the other hand Mr. Roman's opponent, Mr. Rémi Arbour, the ownerof the well known "Turf House" on the corner of Roy and St. Laurent Streets, is in a very precarious state because of the injuries that he h;vde dareré recsaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»as received. The first witness was Dr. Wyatt Johnstonwho said he did the autopsy and found two fractures in the back ofthe head near his left ear. The skull was fragile. In response to Mr. McMaster, the witness said thatthe deceasedappeared53 of age. He has not visited the place where the accidenthappened. He knows, however, that the sidewalks are often dangerous. He can't tell after examining the injuries how the accident happened. There was no external wound. Usually, ablowwith a stick leaves a cut. The instrument is very light and it would have taken a very violent blow. Answering aa series of questions from Mr Macmaster, the doctor said he could not tell withoutmaking an experiment. He tells Mr. Crankshaw that a shot combined with the fall could have caused the injuries. Samuel Roman, brother of the deceased, was then sworn. He adds that hepersonally knows nothingof the accident. He heard the news on Friday morning and went to the hospital to see the wounded who didn't have enough conciousness to narrate the full details of the unfortunate affair. His brotherowned a store adjacent to the establishment of Mr. Arbour. The young girl Pearle Sourkes, isthe next witness. She lives at No. 539 St-Laurent Street. She knew the deceased, and she is the one who gave the detective the shovel handle that waspreviously shown. She was employed at Mr. Roman's and it is at the request of the detective that shegave the instrument. At the time of the accident, she was inside the store and Mr. Roman was busy removing the snow outside. She hearda fight outside, but she could notdistinguish what wassaid. A few minutes later she came out and she saw Mr. Arbour ina snowbank. She cannot say what was exactly the position of the twomen. After a few moments, she saw Mr. Roman turning to someone like for him to witness. At that time, Mr. Arbour moveforward with the shovelhandle and hit his opponent whocollapsed. She went to him and helped him get up. He was trembling, but he said that it would be nothing and that he would recover quickly. LITTLE TIM broke the World record in 1901, for a five mile race on ice, performed on a race track in Montreal in 13 minutes and 8 seconds (13:08 min.). This magnificient racehorse, that belongs to Mr. Stanislas Arbour, the popular hotelier on Saint-Laurent Street, is a 2.17½ minute horse. Let's hope we will see Little Tim once againnts -umbari veraéfav's18 Rivitab» «tab»on the race track next summer. [*This phrase is a proverb that very roughly translates to: "A pure-bred dog is a good hunter". According to the Harrap's dictionary, Bon chien chasse the race is the same as: "What's bred in the bone comes out in theflesh".]
[Note: It is further thought that a 2.17 1/2 minute horse means that Little Tim could run a whole mile in 2 minutes, 17 seconds and a half, aspurported by Denis ARBOUR on 11 Aug 2008.]

Notes:
According to CEF Records, on 21 February 1916, Edouard heard his country's call to duty and left his young wife to enlist with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces. At the time of his medical examination, he was 5' 6½" tall, weighed 133 pounds, and hadlHoez.sus-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab»a fair complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. Private ARBOUR then became part of the 69th Battalion and boarded a ship for England, from whence he went to France for five months. Edouard then began having difficulty keeping up withtroop marches, owing to shortness of breath and chest pain. On 15 November 1917, the Medical Board determined that hesuffered from Neurasthenia, as he complained of pain in his back, legs, and testicles, was extremely nervous, was afraid towalk in the road, and could not read a book as it made him cry. Although no specific heart defect was noted, on 22 November 1917, they decided to send him back home to be based in Ottawa, awaiting a permanent decision of his fate. On 5 February1918, Edouard was determinedto be medically unfit and was summarily discharged from service. He returned to his wife and son in Ste-Therese.
On 1 Sep 1923, Edouard returned home to Canada after 6 weeks of workingor at least looking for work in North Dakota. He had arrived in the USfrom Gretna, MB, on 23 Jul 1923. He was planning on returning on the Highway via Gretna. While still retaining his "good" health, it would appear as though Edouard's foray into the US was not all that successful,as he was returning home with just $20 in his pocket.Edouard a épousé Stephanie LEBLANC le 25 juil 1910 à Sainte-Thècle,,Mauricie,Quebec,Canada,. Notes:
After matching dates, one must conclude that the reason Blanche and Earl separated and subsequently divorced is due to his relationship with Anna. Blanche and Earl married in May 1908, and their son Earl was born later that year. By Apr 1910, Blanche and son Earl lived as boarders, perhaps with friends. Although the elder Earl was no longer around, Blanche still claimed her status as married. Perhaps this was just denial on her part and the couple really had divorced. Or perhapsthey were still legally married even though Earl was in a relationship with Anna. In May 1910, Earl is found livingwith his parents in MT and claims himselfto be divorced. The following Dec 1910, Earl and Anna's son Easton wasborn in MT. Inabout Sep 1918, Earl and Anna had a daughter, Phyllis, born in MT. By Jan 1920, Earl, Anna, and their two children were living in UT. Apparently Blanche and Earl really did divorce at some point because she also remarried, in about 1912, toEdward. In Jan 1918, Blanche and Edward had a son Joseph. By 1923, Blanche, Edward, and Joseph had moved to OR, while son Earl remained in MT. In fact, after the 1910 Census, Blanche was never again notably connected with her son Earl. Perhapshe reminded her too much of his father and she avoided him. In any case, after 1910, young Earl seems to have been taken in and raised by hismaternal grandmother.
Note from Judy : Portland did an extensive street renaming and renumbering in 1931-1933. I'm fairly sure that the Mahoney's 1930 address of 769 SE Caruthers was renumbered as 2307 SE Caruthers, whichis the addresslisted for them in the directoriesIreviewed.

From Julie Re via message board on 16 Feb 2010: I have some pictures that my husband's granny took of the grave sites in Butte Montana of the 2 young children Edward and John. And a picture of Blanche with my mother-in-law in yellowstone in the 50s. I also have an old bible of P. Mahoney that has a section to write births, deaths, and marriages in. It is a little confusing, as it looks like different people have written dates in it over the years going way back to the 1850s. Hopefully I willbe able to view your tree. I am curious to see what other info you have and how we are related.

Bio from Facebook on 06 Jun 2010:
06 Jun 1888 -- Born in Glendale, Montana, Blanche B. ARBOUR was the eldest of 3 children of shoemaker, clothing store owner, and miner Louis-Joseph-"Alfred" ARBOUR and Ida A. TERRY. Just prior to her20th birthday,Blanche married 20-year oldEarl Matt CLARIDGE on 08 May 1908 in Rochester, MT. Their son, Earl V. CLARIDGE, was born later that year. Arranged in haste, theirs was not a marriage meant to last. By April 1910, thecouple had separated. By May 1910, they had apparently divorced. Afterfurther comparing of dates, one must conclude that the reason Blanche and Earl separated and subsequently divorced is due to his relationshipwith Anna. Blanche and Earl married in May 1908, and Earl was born later that year. By April 1910, Blanche and son Earl lived as boarders, perhaps with friends. Although the elder Earl was no longer around, Blanche still claimed her status as married. Perhaps this was just denial onher part and the couple really had divorced. Or perhaps they were still legally married even though Earl was in a relationship with Anna. In May 1910, the elder Earl was found living with his parents in MT and claimed himself to be divorced. The following December 1910, Earl and Anna's son Easton was born in MT. InaboutSeptember 1918, Earl and Anna had a daughter, Phyllis, born in MT. By January 1920, Earl, Anna, and their two children were living in Utah. ApparentlyBlanche and Earl really did divorce at some point because she also remarried, in about 1912,to Edward L. MAHONEY Jr. Over the next 5 years, Blanche and Edward had 3 sons, although 2 died while very young. Between January 1920 and 1923, Blanche, Edward, and son Joseph moved to Oregon, while herson Earl remained in MT. In fact, after the 1910 Census, Blanche was never again notably connected withher son Earl. Perhaps he reminded her too much of hisfather and she avoided him. In any case, after 1910, young Earl seems to have been taken in and raised by his maternal grandmother. Edward workedfor years in the meat-packing industry, both in MT and OR. He retired in 1955 as Vice President of Northwestern Ice & Cold Storage Co. Seventy-year old Edward died in Portland, OR, on17 March 1958. Blanche was86-years old when she died inPortlandon 08 November 1974. Both of them were buried in Riverview Abbey Mausoleum in Portland. Blanche's obituary claims that she had 3 grandchildren and 12great-grandchildren, although we know virtually nothing of them. She had 3 children with Mahoney

REICHLE COUPLE KILLED AS PLANE LOSES WING, DIVES -- Amateur Pilot is One Victim, Passenger is a Woman
Reichle, 17 Oct -- As his mother looked on from her home, Joseph Polish, 24, and his sister-in-law, Mrs. Rudolph Polish, 21-year old mother ofa baby girl, crashed to their deaths here this afternoonwhen Polish's airplane lost a wing and plunged tothe ground from a height of 500 feet. The accident occurred hardly half a mile from the Polish ranch home. Polish's wrist watch was stopped at 3:30 pm. Young Polish, an amateur pilot, had taken his sister-in-law up just after landing with two passengers, Willis and William Smith, Reichle ranch laborers. Plane Old -- The plane, a second-hand, open-cockpit monoplane, had been purchased two weeks ago by Polish, who flew it here from Minneapolis. Mrs. Polish's body was badly mangled. Polish apparently shut off the ignition for the wreckage did notcatch fire. Witnesses said the right wing appeared to fall from the plane while it was about 500 feet from the ground, and theship plunged into a vertical dive, leveling off just before strikingtheearth and plowing into the side of a hill. Wreckage was strewn over a large area. The missing wing was found 155 yards from where the plane crashed. Young Polish, who had been flying for five years, and who frequently took passengers for shortflights, was said to have been qualifiedfor a transport pilot's license. The plane which crashed today was histhird machine. The Family -- Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Polish, preeminent ranchers ofthis section, Polish is survived by severalbrothers and sisters, including a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Jensen of Russell, CO. Mrs. Polish's husband, daughter, and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Arbour, of Reichle, survive.

Vivian sailed aboard the Queen Mary on 09 Nov 1945, returning from service in Europe. She was a Corporal with the WAC (Women's Army Corps) andwas among the "High Score Casuals." They were headed forSeparation Center #51 in Fort Des Moines, IA. Herservice number was 912398 and her MOS was 784, making her a Weather Observer. Her Advanced Service Rating was 50, which placed her among the higest scores in the WAC. The Advanced Service Rating Score was the system that the US Army used at the endof WWII in Europe to determine which soldiers were eligible to be sent back to the US for discharge from military service. As the end of the war in Europe became a reality, the US War Department began planning for the "redeployment of Army Personnel" following the end of hostilities. The Readjustment Regulations were first introduced on 15 Sep 1944 and revised 15 Feb 1945 and again on 05 Mar 1945. The rules were simple in general principle: "those who had fought longest and hardest should bereturned home for discharge first." The US Army divided units of the European Theater of Operations into four categories:
troops already designated as Occupation Forces (such as the 3rd and 7thArmy)
troops that had been overseas for less than one year, or those: a) to be redeployed directly to the Pacific; b) to be redeployed to the Pacific by way of the United States; c) to be redeployed to the US to be placed in strategic reserve.
troops or units to be organized (or re-organized) in the European Theater for roles as either Occupation Forces or as troops being redeployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations.
troops with long overseas service that were to remain in Europe only while needed, and then to be returned to the US for inactivation.
New replacement troops would replace the "veterans" returning home. An enlisted man needed a score of 85 pts to be considered for the demobilization. The scores were determined as follows for each:
Month in service = 1 pt
Month in service overseas = 1 pt
Combat award (including medal and battle stars) = 5 pts
Dependant child under 18 = 12 pts
Time of service was calculated from 16 Sep 1940. The four criteria werethe only ones from which points were calculated. No points were issuedfor age, marriage, or dependents over the age of 18. Battles and awards were also only accepted from a predetermined list. Necessary scores may have been different for the WAC.
