17 April 1852 -- Born in Joliette City, QC, Ours-Joseph ARBOUR was the 3rd of 12 children of farmer Sulpice-Edouard ARBOUR and his wife Esther TRUDEAU. Somewhat atypical for our ARBOURs, Ours appears to have remained in one place his entire life, as he has been located in JolietteCity from beginning to end. As a young man, Ours worked as a baker (1881) but later returned to his farming roots and became a farmer (1901).In St-Liguori, QC, on 15 May 1883, our 31-year old Ours married 17-yearold Marie-Zephirina GRENIER. Together Ours and Zephirina had 9 children, 3 of whom died in childhood. During the 1901 Census, Ours and family lived in Breau Moulin -- possibly the name of their farm -- which wasin St-Charles-de-Borromèe parish C'est ave?e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»in Joliette City. They owned a 3-room house plus 5 outbuildings on 162 acres. How they ever fit 9 people in a 3-room house is probably beyond the comprehension of most of us today. Ours died shortly after thison21 February 1902, just shy of his 50th birthday. Widowed Zephirina married Narcisse DUVAL on 12 April 1909. She was further alive during the Census of 1911, but nothing is known of her beyond this.

Barthol was a Farmer living in Rangeon Prairie (possibly the name of his farm) in Joliette City, QC, in St-Charles-de-Borromee Parish in 1901 Census. They owned a six-room house plus four outbuildings on 168 acres. In 1906, the family migrated to the United States of America and settled in the State of Maine. Barthol reportedly died in Joliette. It is unclear whether he was ill and remained therewhen the family moved to the US or if he returned there when he became ill. --> Noteadded 06 Sep 2011: When they first moved to the US, they apparently stayed briefly inMassachusetts, where youngest daughter Yvonne was born.

On 03 Aug 1910, Celina and children arrived in the border town of Highwater, QC, presumably for a visit with Barthol shortly before his death.Perhaps he was working there when he became ill. They travelled on CPRTrain #12 from Maine. The childrenwho made the trek were Francois 18, Louis 15, "Miss" (probably Delima) 12, Edward 10, Chas Hector 5, and Irine 2 -- although their recorded ages do not seem correct.

14 Feb 1863 -- Charles-Barthelemi ARBOUR was born in Joliette, QC, as one of 12 children to farmers Sulpice ARBOUR and Esther TRUDEAU. Bartholmarried Celina BOISVERT on 13 Feb 1888. In 1901, they were farmers living on Rangeon Prairie (possibly thename of their farm) in Joliette City, QC, in St-Charles-de-Borromee Parish. Between 1889 and 1906, Celina bore them 12 children, 9 of whom grew to adulthood, 7 of whom married and gave them grandchildren - at least 37 of them. In 1906, the family emigrated to the United States of America and settled in the State of Maine. Barthol reportedly died in Joliette so it is unclear whether he was ill and remained there when the family movedto the US or if he returned there when he became ill. Eighteen-year old Anna married 26-year old Medard PARENT in Joliette on12 January 1897. Just like her father, Medard was initially a baker but later turned to farming in order to feed their growing family. Anna and Medard had 5 children, 3 daughters and 2 sons. Anna and Medard lived at 84 deLanaudiere Street in Joliette in 1901. They owned a 3-room house plus 6 outbuildings on 120 ¼ acres. It was probably also the location of Medard's bakery shop. He earned $1000 that year, quite a princely sum compared to many of the time. In about 1914, Wilfred moved to New Hampshire and married later that year in Dover, Strafford County, NH. He registered for the draft during WWI while living in Stratford County. The family lived in Dover from 1917 through 1941. They seem tohave left that community by 1943, by 1948, they lived in Biddeford, Maine, where they continued to live through atleast 1951. Wilfred died sometime between 1951 and 1956.

According to his WWI Draft Registration, Wilfred was of medium height and medium build with brown eyes and black hair.

16 Feb 1891 -- Joseph-Wilfred ARBOUR was another of our young men out of Joliette, QC. He was the 4th of 9 children born to Ours ARBOUR and Zephirina GRENIER. In 1914, while still single, Wilfred decided to investhis future in the US, moving to NewHampshire where the textile trade was the major industry. Shortly after his arrival, he met and married Odeline GRENIER, who was a native of Dover, NH. Wilfred registered for the draft during WWI while living in Stratford County, NH,and was foundtobe medium height and medium build with brown eyes and black hair. Thefamily lived in Dover from 1917 through 1941. During this time they became parents to 6 children, while both working at the cotton mills: Odeline as a spinner and Wilfred workinghis way up from carder to foreman. In 1941, Wilfred seems to have served a short stint in the Army. Afterward, the family left Dover; by 1948, they lived in Biddeford, Maine, where they continued to live through at least 1951. Wilfred worked asa fixer at Bates Manufacturing, the largest employer in the area. He diedsometime between 1951 and 1956. After his death, Odeline seems to havereturned to her home in Dover, where she passed away on 29 Nov 1976.

--> Note: By 20 Jul 1918, cousin Emile was found disqualified for military service. However, Louis was accepted and enlisted. He was either part of the group going to Camp Devens on 26 Jul 1918 or was headed to Fort Slocum, NY, on 5 Aug 1918.

Apparently Louis was part of the group headed for Camp Devens. On 21 Oct 1918, Louis filed his Petition for Naturalization from there. Louis Joseph Arbour of Co A, 73rd Infantry, US Army, claimed hisplace of residence was Camp Devens, MA, aswell as47 Washington St, Augusta, ME. He was both a Soldier and a Mill Hand. He had emigrated to the US in about Sep 1902, from Joliette, QC, through the port of Menchaug, MA, via the Maine Central Railroad. He had declared his intention tobecome a US Citizen in Oct 1917, in Augusta, ME, in the Superior Court of Kennebec County. He further claimed thathe had lived in Massachusetts continuously from Sep 1902 through 26 Jul 1918. He also spoke English "Little." All was verified byhis two witnesses, Earl Blue and Charles C. Chase, a Sergeant and a Corporal respectively in his unit at Camp Devens. On this day, Louis was noted to be 5'10", White with a medium complexion, blue eyes, brown hair, and no scars. Because ofhismilitary status, Louis wasgranted US Citizenship on the spot and his Petition was admitted accordingly.

This sad young family had eight children in the 10 years after their wedding -- only one of whom survived until adulthood. Perhaps they may have had more babies in ensuing years, but their misfortunewas not yet over. Louis himself only liveduntil age 35, when he was struck down by tuberculosis. On 7 April 1930, when the Census taker visited their house,Louis was already in the sanitorium and was listed as being "absent" from the home. He died the next day.

Augusta, 11 April -- Funeral services for Louis J. Arbour were held Friday morning at St Augustine Church and the American Legion service was conducted. Mr. Arbour died at the US Veterans' Hospital at Rutland Heights, MA, Monday night after a long illness. He was 35 years of age. He was a World War veteran and had always lived in this city. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Arbour; two daughters, Germaine and Laurette;five brothers, Joseph, Francois, Barthelemy, Edouard, and Hector, allof Augusta; three sisters, Mr.s Treffle Gilbert of Augusta, Rev. Sister Barthelemy of Three Rivers, QC, and Rev. Sister Gabrielle de L'annonciation of St Vincent de Paul, Valleyfield, QC.

This couple may sound familiar as we profiled Barthol on this past Valentine's Day. YoungLouis emigrated to the US with his family and settled in Augusta, Maine, when he was about 10-years old. In1917, he was a Cotton Mill Employee with the Edwards Company. Shortly after this, Louis fulfilled his civic responsibility by registering forthe Draft. According to his WWI Draft Registration, Louis had a slender build, blue eyes, and brown hair. Louis was later inducted into the US Army at Augusta on 15 July 1918. Private ARBOUR served with the 45th Company, 12th Battalion, 151 DepotBrigade, until 2 August 1918, and wasthen transferred to Company A, 73rd Infantry, until his discharge upondemobilization on 29 January 1919. Upon release, he was 5' 7" tall with blue eyes, brown hair, and a medium complexion. During his stint asa soldier, Louis was awarded US Citizenship on 21 October 1918. Followinghis return from war service, Louis married lovely, 18-year old Marie-Emma GRONDIN on 05 April 1920 in Augusta. Throughout their time together, Louis held a variety of jobs,including Second Hand at a Cotton Mill (1920-1923), Mechanic (1924), Truckman (1925), Wood Dealer (1925), and Retail Lumber Merchant (1927-1930). This sad young family had 8 childrenin the 10 years after their wedding -- only one of whom surviveduntil adulthood. The area in which they lived was called "SandHill." The cotton mill thatemployed them was at the bottom of Sand Hill and their church, St Augustine, was at the top. The generation of Francois and his children were very much discriminated at that time due totheir ethnic background and it was my husband's generation that brokethecycle. My in-laws left the "Hill" when Ray was 3-years old and movedto the "English" part of thecity, which was really frowned upon. Around the time Ray was getting ready to start school in the non-French speaking part of the city, my in-lawsdecided they needed to teach him to speak English ashe only spoke French at that time. He has memories of other children in the neighborhood teasing him because he only spoke French. He still is quite fluent in French, buthis first language is nowEnglish. His younger brother, however, can understand French quite well buthas difficulty conversing. I also remember Olivine. She refused to speak English and only spoke French, except when it was just she and I,because I do not speak French.

On 30 Nov 1915, Francois and Augustine travelled to the US via the portof Newport, VT, and were headed for Augusta, ME, to their house at 22 Mill Brook. 25 Feb 1893 -- Francois-Xavier-Gilbert ARBOUR was born in Joliette, QC,as the 4th of 12 children of Charles-Barthelemi ARBOUR [who was profiled on 14 Feb] and Marie-Celina BOISVERT. At approximatelyage 14, Francois emigrated to the US from Canada but then returned sometime later. Around age 20, Francois trekked across Canada to arrive in Alberta. On 25Nov 1913, in Morinville, AB, Francois married 16-year old Augustine DUPUIS. They had one son who died just after birth in Alberta before theiremigration to the US in about 1915. On 30 Nov 1915, Francois and Augustine traveled to the US via the port of Newport, Vermont, and headed for Augusta, Maine, to their house at 22 Mill Brook. Francois was 5'9" tall with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. Augustine was 5'3" tall with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. They carried $68 with them. Just 3 months later, Augustine gave birth to their son Jean-Marie ARBOUR in Feb 1917. He then seems to have become sick by 1933, when he had no job. In 1935, 42-year old Francois passedaway in Augusta, ME, before ever having met any of his 18 grandchildren. Olivine lived another 38years beforepassing away in 1973. One of these grandchildren is Raymond J. Augusta -- Hector C. Arbour, 66, of 41 Oxford St. died Monday morning at the Augusta General Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Joliet, QC, Canada, 6 Jan 1901, son of Barthelemi and CelinaBoisvert Arbour. Mr. Arbour was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church. He hadbeen employed by the Bates Manufacturing Company, Edwards Division, inthe spinning room, and later as custodian for the City of Augusta. Augusta -- Edouard M. Arbour, 83, died Tuesday morning at his home, 28 Water St., after a long illness. He was born in Joliette, PQ, 2 April 1889, the son of Michel and Adelaide Lasalle Arbour. Mr. Arbour was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church. A lifelong resident of Augusta, he had been employed by Bates Manufacturing Company, Edwards Division, for 52 years in the carding department prior to his retirement in 1961. He was a member of St John the Baptist Union of America Conseil Laval. Survivors include four sons, Edouard D. Arbour, Armand E. Arbour, Richard Arbour, and Roger R. Arbour, all of Augusta; a daughter, Miss Juliette Arbour of Augusta; two brothers, Rosaire and Anselme Arbour, both of Augusta; a sister, Mrs. Genaro (Marguerite) Porcello of Medford, MA; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Mass of the Resurrection will be sung Thursday morning at 10 at St Augustine Catholic Church. Burial will be in St AugustineCemetery.

AUGUSTA'S MANUFACTURING LEGACY -- Group Working to Turn Remaining Building Into Museum
Augusta -- For more than 100 years, workers toiled inside the massive brick Edwards Mill complex before it was destroyed by a spectacular blaze in 1989. {Photos} {Jan Michaud, left, SANDY ARBOUR, andMaurice Pelletier examine early 20th century photos of mill workers Tuesday at Michaud's Augusta home. A group is proposing to utilize thestructure for a museum.} Now, a small group made up primarily of descendants of those workers are working to make sure the memories and stories aren't buried with the charred ashes ofthe riverside former mill. "Manufacturing in Augusta -- I don't want it to be lost for our children" said Jan Michaud, president of Friends for a Heritage Center at Mill Park. "This is the workforce that was thebackbone of the city." At its peak the Edwards Mill work force numbered1,300 people -- many of them Franco-Americans and other immigrants whocame to America, and Augusta, to work. They made cotton cloth productsfor a thriving company -- and lives for themselves and their families.Now a core group of 10 local residents are raising funds and interest in turning the only still-standing Edwards Mill building -- a two-story, 1,800-square-foot brick building on a small hill overlooking the formermill -- into a museum. The museum would seek to honor and recall thecity's thousands of manufacturing workers, starting with the many who toiled at Edwards, but later expanding, Michaud said, to include paper mill and other manufacturing workers from the city's past. Members of Friends for a Heritage Center at Mill Park have been laying the foundation for the museum for three years, interviewing, photographing and recording video and audio of 31 former mill workers, documenting their stories and memories. "These folks were reluctant at first," Michaud, whosegrandfather worked at the mill, said of the mill workers they've interviewed. "They'd say, 'Oh, you don't want to talk to me, I don't have anything interesting to say.' We said, 'Wejust want your memories. What was it like? How did work affect your family?' And, inevitably, they'd open up. "Once they started to talk, they couldn't stop." The former cotton mill at 1 Water St. frames one side of the city's downtown area. Employment at the mill sometimes peaked at as many as 2,000 workers. Thecity owns the building, which is locatedin the Capital Riverfront Improvement District -- an area created in 1999 as a joint venture between the city and the state to emphasize and protect the river. As such, organizers, who are incorporated as a nonprofit group, will need both the city and Capital Riverfront Improvement District board to sign off on the project. City Councilor Patrick Paradis, a member of the district's board, said the City Council and district board have both spoken favorably about the proposal. "We want to see that building go from being an unused building to a wonderful museum to all the people who worked there," said Paradis, whose father workedatthe mill for 35 years, and whois also of French ancestry. "This history is going away -- every week,someone who worked there is passing away. We wantto capture their history." Jan Michaud's husband, Victor Michaud, whose grandfather and great-grandfather worked at the mill, said the building they're eyeing for a museum was deemed structurally sound in a 2002 assesment. But it was estimated at the time that it would take about $1.5 million to restore the building and convert it into a museum. Maurice "Moe" Pelletier, vice president of the group whose father-in-law worked at Edwards and whose father worked at what later becomethe Statler paper mill in Augusta, said a major next step is to have a new assement done so the group can form a business plan. In addition to photos, the Friends for a HeritageCenter at Mill Park has cloth products made at the mill, tools and a huge logbook from the 1930s listing each worker, their pay and how much they paid in rent to live in numerous company-owned homes surrounding the mill. "I just found my grandfather's, he was in the card room," saidSandy Arbour as she looked through the logbook recently. "Lookat all these French names... Amazing." University of Maine at Augusta architecturestudents have already come up with different designs for turning the building, currently used by the city for storage,into a showplace. A fundraiser for the project is planned for Friday at Le Club Calumet, featuring comedian Louis Philippe as "FatherFrenchie," and musician TinaCharest. Jan Michaud, a former elementary school principal, said they'd like to have the buildingrestored and museum up and running within five years. She said they'd also like to include a small cafe in the building,as a place for people to gather and also to help pay for the costs of maintaining and running the museum. "We're hoping we can make somethinghappen for the community," she said. "It's an awesome spot for tourists to come and start their walk-through of the city here, go downtown, go over to Fort Western. "It's a dream, and we're hoping to make it a reality."

Emile's grandson Michael PARE fondly remembers his granddad'sbusiness: "I shot a few racks in there as a youngster while drinking an ice cold Orange Crush purchased for 5 cents from the cooler that was situated in the same room. Ah, the memories . . ."

He was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church, a member of Artisans Society, and the StJohn the Baptist Union of America Counseil Lavalle, and prior to his retirement was employeed as aslubber tender in the card room at Bates. He is survived by one daughter, Muriel Dostie of Augusta; four brothers, Edouard, Anselme, and Rosaire, all of Augusta, and Ernest Arbour of Boston; two sisters, Mrs. Bernadette Turgeon of Augusta and Mrs.Marguerite Porcello of Medford, MA; three grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 05 Jun 1892 -- Born in Joliette, Quebec, Joseph-Francois ARBOUR was the3rd of 12 children of carter, mill laborer, and teamster Michel ARBOURand his wife Adelaide LASALLE. Lured by the prosperity in the textile industry, his family emigrated fromQuebec to the United States, settling in Augusta, Maine, when Joseph was about 11. As a young man, Joseph began working in the cotton mills, first as a spinner, then as an operative, and lastly as "a slubber tender in the card room." All totaled, hewas an employee of the Edwards Division of Bates Manufacturing Companyfor 50 years. On 15 January 1917 in Augusta, Joseph married 21-year old Clara POULIN. In the ensuing years, they had 4 children - 2 daughtersand 2 sons - although only Murielseemsto have married and had children. According to his WWI Draft Registration from June 1917, Joseph was of medium height and medium build, with blue eyes and light brown hair; he also had a disabled arm. In Augusta on 08 April 1965, Clara breathedherlast breath. Joseph followed her 3 years later, passing away on 13May 1968. Both were buried in St Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Augusta.

Topsham -- Rosaire A. Arbour, 83, of 8 Pitch Pine Drive, formerly of Boothbay Street, Augusta, died Saturday, 22 Feb, at a Topsham nursing home. He was born 6 Oct 1902, in Juliette, QC, the son of Michael and Adelaide Lasalle Arbour. Mr. Arbour wasemployed by Bates Manufacturing Co, Augusta, for 50 years. He retired in 1965. He was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church, Augusta, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. His wife, Marie Daigle Arbour, died in 1948. He is survived by two sons, Lucien Arbour of Topsham, with whom he lived for the past 20 months, and Lionel Arbourof Randolph; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, 10:00 am, at St Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Avenue, Augusta. Spring burial will be in St Augustine Cemetery. Visiting hours will be today from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 pm at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta.

Anselme (Sam) Arbour, 79, of 108 Bridge St., died Sunday at his home following a brief illness. He was born in Joliette, Canada, 5 Oct 1903, the son of Michel and Adelaide Lasalle Arbour. He had beenemployed by Scotch Bottling Company for 20years and was also self-employed as an electrician. Mr. Arbour had also worked for Bates Manufacturing Company, Edwards Division, for many years. He was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church, a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and the Artisans Society. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Isabelle Rodrigue Arbourof Augusta; a son, Gerard Arbour of Rutland, VT; three daughters, Mrs.Jeanne-d'Arc Daigle of Augusta, Mrs. Larry (Therese) Gates of Princeton, LA, and Mrs.William E. 22 May 1915 -- Born in Dover, New Hampshire, Roland J. ARBOUR was the eldest of 6 children of textile mill employees Joseph-Wilfred ARBOUR andOdeline F. GRENIER. Roland spent his formative years in Dover and evenfollowed his parents' path into the local textile mills, but WWII changed everything for the family. Having heard his country's call to duty,Roland enlisted in the Army on 25 February 1942, at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where he was noted to be 5'7" tall and 182 lbs.Thereafter, hemust have seen some action in Europe in which he was injured. SergeantRoland sailed on the "Aquitania" into New York, NY, arriving on 04 October 1945, returning from war as a "High Score Casual" bound for the Separation Centerat Fort Devens. He settled in Biddeford and Saco, Maine,where he again returned to mill work. Roland then thought to add some stability to his life by marrying when he wed 35-year old Ada T. LESSARD on 22 April 1950 in Saco. Their daughterJoan was born a few years later. Following this, both Roland and Ada were both found living in Salem, NH, but they do not seem to have lived together. At the time of Roland's death in Methuen, MA, on 06 September 1983, neither Ada nor Joan wasmentioned in Roland's obituary. Ada was 86 when she died in Salem on 19 June 2001. Joan was the mother of their only granddaughter prior to Ada's passing.

Wilfred J. Arbour Jr., 74, of Route 111 died Friday at the Renaissance Nursing Home. He was born in Dover, NH, a son of Wilfred J. and Odelie Grenier Arbour Sr., and attended Dover schools. Mr. Arbour served with the New Hampshire National Guard and the Army during WWII. He moved to the Biddeford area after the war and was a house painter for several years and also worked at York Mill for a few years. He last worked 20 years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1980. He wasa life memberof the Biddeford-Saco Elks. For the past nine years he was retired in Bradenton, FL. He enjoyed playing pool and cards. Surviving are his wife,Irene J. Chaffard Arbour; two sons, Ronald of Seattle and Roger of Biddeford; a stepson, Richard Morin ofLyman; a stepdaughter, Priscille Nadeau of Lyman; abrother, Norman of Biddeford; a sister, Jeannette Butler of Rochester, NH; three grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren. She was born in Augusta, 29 Dec 1921, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Genest) Arbour. Sheis survived by a son, F. William "Bill" Zimba and his wife, Patricia, of Unity; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Angela Zimba of Shawmut, Cheryl and Blaine Anthony of Waterville, and Greg and Wanda Zimba of Benton; two great-grandchildren, Jordan and Drake Zimba; two step-great-grandchildren, Shauntelle and Courtney Anthony;and by several nieces and nephews. At her request there will be no public visitation nor funeral service. Burial will be at a later date at the convenienceof the family. Memorial donations in her memory may be sent to March of Dimes, Maine Chapter, 12 Acme Road, PO Box 68, Brewer ME04412. Arrangements are with Gallant Funeral Home, 10 Elm St, Waterville.

Augusta -- Jean B. Bernard, 44, who was injured in an accident at NorthBelgrade about 10:30 Thursday night, died shortly after being taken tothe Augusta General Hospital. When admitted to the hospital he was placed on the danger list with a compundfracture of one leg and serious head injuires, Dr. A. J. Gingras said at the hospital. Four others were less seriously injured when the automobile crashed into the rear of a parked truck in the town of North Belgrade, State Trooper Paul Curtis said. The others were Samuel Lerman of Portland, John Arbour, son-in-law of the dead man, Morie Brown, and Omer Arbour, all of Augusta. Two other Portlanders, Clarence King and Royal Bird, were not hurt. King was the driver of thetruck, police said.Bernard, who lived at 38 Northern Avenue, was born inAugusta on 20 Jan 1895, the son of Louis and Olivine Breton Bernard, and had lived here all his life. He was employed as a doffer in the spinning room of the Edwards MfgCo. As he was growing up, "Babe," as he wasknown, played ball in Little League and the Babe Ruth League and delivered Kennebec Journal newspapers in the area.Hector graduated from St Augustine School in 1958 and Cony High School in 1962. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology fromBowdoin College in 1966 and subsequently obtained his master of business administration from Russell Sage College in Albany, NY. While at Bowdoin, he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, where he made andmaintained friendships that had lasted allhis life. During the baseball season, their usual greeting was "GO RED SOX!" He was employed by Travelers Insurance Co. in the Medicare claims department for 25 years, and his work required that he and his family move to different locations inRhode Island, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Voorheesville and Albany, NY. While living in Voorheesville, he was elected town justice, a position he took very seriously. Not only did he try cases, but he had the pleasure of marrying many couples as part of that job. After retiring, he moved to his beloved Montana in 1995, in sight of the mountains he loved so much. In Kalispell, he was a photographer for Kalispell News andlater worked for Karen Weyer Photography. Hector was apastmember of the Elks and Kiwanis clubs and a present member of the Flathead Shrine Club, having been chairman of the Shrine Circus in Kalispell for many years. He was "Shriner of the Year" in 2001. He was happy to find kids whocould benefitfromthe care Shrine hospitals could give. He worked diligently to raise the money to make that happen. Babe loved his God, his family, hiking, and biking in Glacier Park, and traveling. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and proud grandfather. His favorite meal included lobster, orange soda, and chips, followed by ice cream. His family made sure that he was always treated to this when he visited them inAugusta and on their trips to Boothbay Harbor, Maine. His appreciationof nature was evident in the photography he enjoyed and shared with others. From the windows of his home in Kalispell, he could watch the panorama of the changing mountain scenes, the geese, ducks, deer, eagles, hawks, fox, and coyotes as theypassed the property. Babe's favorite saying was "Life Is Good," and heworkedhard to make that true. A sports fan, he avidly followed the Red Sox, New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, and any NBA team that Steve Nash played for. He hada wonderful sense of humor, was a good listener, and was an honest, honorable,and loving man. He was predeceased in death by his father, Hector C. Arbour; two brothers, Bertrand J. Arbour and J. Clement Arbour; and his brother-in-law,Herbert G.Foley. Hector is survived by his wife, Sharon, at thefamily home in Kalispell; his mother, Maria Arbour; his sisters, Christine I. Arbour, of Augusta, and Jacqueline Foley, of Hallowell, Maine; his daughter, Nicole and her husband, Dr. Richard Lennon, and grandchildren, Alexandra, Samantha, and Victoria, of Tampa, FL; his son,David Arbour and his wife, Mary Lynn, and grandchildren Sarah and Michael, of Port Richey, FL; his daughter, Renay Arbour and her husband, Davide Cernuschi, of Brooklyn, NY; by extended family, Joseph Chase, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Susan Chase,Frank Bellion, and granddaughter Marie Claire, of Hayling Island, England. Also surviving are nephews Michael Arbourand his wife, Jennifer,of Union,Maine, and Dennis Arbour and wife, Lisa, of Augusta; nieces Susan Fontaine, Lisa Pare and her husband, Raymond, and Kim Bard and her husband, Michael, all of Augusta, and Kathy Smith and her husband, Travis, of Sacramento, CA; two sisters-in-law, Lucienne Arbour and Gloria Fleming and her husband, Bill, of Augusta; grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins; and an aunt. Washington (UPI) -- The nation's lawmen, alarmed by the rise of crime on the streets, voiced enthusiasm today for President Johnson's proposalto aid state and local agencies in a nationwide war on crime. Johnson said Tuesday night in his State of the Union message he will ask Congress to approve a federal program of financial assistance for "those states and cities that try to make their streetsand homes safer." A spot survey of law enforcement officials by United Press International disclosed today that most lawmen feel a substantial increase in federal aid would provide a "tremendous boost" for state and local anti-crime programs. Edouard Arbour, chief of police in Augusta, ME, summed up the reaction of many local law enforcement officials. "Let's face it," said Arbour, "Law enforcement is at the lowest ebb it has ever been. We would take whatever we could get." . . . In his message to Congress, Johnson warned that the fight against crime cannot be put off because "it will simply have to be done later at a much higer cost." He proposed a safe streets and crime control act of 1967 under which the federal government would provide 90 percent of the cost of developing state and local plansto combat crime and 60 percent fortraining new police tactical units and providing new communications, equipment, and weapons.

Edouard D. Arbour, 64, of 5 Purington Ave., died unexpectedly Friday atAugusta General Hospital. He was born 21 Dec 1911, in Manchaug, MA, son of Edouard M. and Oliva Letendre Arbour. Until his retirement in 1969, Arbour served as police chief in Augusta for 10 years. He was employed by the State Bureau of Public Improvements at the time of his death. Arbour was a board member of the Maine Municipal Police Training Council and an alumnus of the Yale University School of AlcoholStudies. He was a life member of the Club Calumet and was a past president of AugustaEast Little League. He was a communicant of St Andrew's Catholic Church. Augusta -- Lucille Arbour Pare died in the privacy and comfort of her home on Monday, 9 Jan 2006, at 8 pm following an eight-year battle with lung cancer. Her longevity was due in large part to her faith, her strength of character, and the fervent prayers of many. She was born in Augusta on 6 Jan 1927, to Emile and Marie (LaFlamme) Arbour. Her siblings include Marie Therese Arbour (deceased 1926); Paul and Veleene Arbour of Nevada; Alphonse Pete and Doris Arbour of Georgia; Christine Arbour of Augusta; Joseph Arbour (deceased 1983) and his wife Gerry Michaud of Bradley; John and Suzanne Arbour of Arizona; and Estelle Arbour of Augusta. Lucille attended St Augustine Parochial School and graduated from Cony High School in 1944. Following her graduation, she went to work for the Internal Revenue Service and later transferred to the Small Business Administration. She retired from the Federal Government in May of 1985 after 30 years of service. She then worked part time at NRF and theKV Federal Credit Union. In 1947 Lucille married Edmond G. Pare, also of Augusta. Together they had three children, Michael A. Pare of Ottawa(wife Teresa Witlib Pare and their two daughters, Erika and Karen Pare);Peter J. Pare of Augusta (wife Kim Reny Pare and their three children, Michelle, Matthew, and Steve Pare); and Suzanne M. Pare of Belgrade. Lucille was a life-long parishioner of St Augustine Catholic Church in Augusta. Over the years, she taught third grade in the Parochial School, sang in the choir, served as a Eucharistic Minister, cared for shut-ins, and more recently, helped to tally the weekly budget envelopes. Shewas a member of the Ladies of St Anne, the St Paul's Charismatic and Intercessory Prayer Group, and the St Andrew's Rosary Group. She was also a volunteer at the Glenridge Rehab and Nursing Care Center in Augusta. Lucille will always be remembered for her sense of style and simple elegance. More importantly, she will be remembered for putting the needsof othersbefore her own, and devoting her life to intercessory prayer and service, a hidden ministry with immeasurable influence and value. Her quiet and humble nature belied an inner strength and conviction thatcame into full view during thefinaldays of her life. She blessed us all with her profound courage, wit, and peace. Those of us who have beenprivileged to know this remarkable woman can only hope to learn from her example, and keep her legacy alive. Her family wishes to thankher friends, wonderful neighbors, and strangers from around the globe who prayed for her during her illness. We are particularly grateful to Fr. George Hickey for his priestly ministry, and to Dr. Jim Schneid, Deborah Heald, and the HealthReach Hospice staff whose help and compassion enabled us to honor Lucille's wishes to die in her own home, surrounded by her family. ARBOUR, Harold Roland Arbour, age 83, longtime Merrimac resident, died at his home Sunday, 1 June 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Barbara J. (Howe) Arbour, his wife of forty-seven years. Born in Lewiston, Maine, 22 June1924, son of the late Ernest and Elmina (LaChance) Arbour, he attended the Sacred Heart school in Amesbury.A proud veteran of WWII, he served with the US Navy from 15 December 1942, until his honorable discharge on 28 November 1945, as Seaman FirstClass. Mr. Arbour was an operator for the MBTA and was a former Trustee for the Town of Merrimac Cemetery Department and a member of the BlueKnights, Chapter No. 14. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters Michelle Malone and husband David and Delores Roy; three sons, Mark Hume, Michael Hume, and Gregory Griffin; nine grandchildren, two nephews, one cousin, Joan Carrier, and his beloved dog, Ruby. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 5 June 2008, at 10 am at StJosephChurch, 2 School Street, Amesbury followed by interment in Locust Grove Cemetery, Merrimac. Visiting hours at Paul C. Rogers & Sons Family Funeral Home, 36 West Main Street, Merrimac, will be Wednesday from 6 to 9 pm. Randolph -- Lionel J. Arbour, 86, went to be with his Lord peacefully on 29 Jan 2012, with his family by his side, at the VA Maine Healthcare Systems, Togus, hospice unit. Lionel was the husband of the late Barbara Mae (Messenger) Arbour, with whomhe shared 35 years of marriage. He was born 31 Oct 1925, in Augusta, the son of Rosaire and Marie (Daigle) Arbour. Lionel attended Augusta schools. In1943, Lionel served in the Army during WWII in Germany. After being home, his passion was body building with his brother and friends. In 1951, he married Barbara and moved to Randolph, where they raised three children, Vicki, Butch, and Lisa. Lionel worked at Togus VA for 32 years until he retired in 1981. Lionel was a well-known house painterand roofer in the area for many years.He was a lifetime member of the Le Club Calumet, also a member of the American Legion Smith-Wiley Post 4 of Gardiner. He was a member of St Joseph Parish for 30-plus years. Lionel enjoyed spending time with hisfamily, playing golf, attending family outings, working around the perimeter of his home, especially taking care of his roses, and having coffeewith his McDonald's buddies, which he thought a lot of. Lionel was a one-of-a-kind guy who loved andwasvery loved by his family and everyone who knew him. Lionel is predeceased by his wife, Barbara Mae; a brotherLucien Arbour; his parents; and second wife, Ruth Pinkham Arbour. Arbour Sr. -- Estero, FL -- Gerard Joseph "Jerry" Arbour Sr.,83, of Estero, FL, passed away peacefully on Friday, 9 September 2011,at Life Care Center of Estero, with his family by his side. Formerly of Augusta, Maine, he had been a resident of Southwest Florida since 2000. Jerry was born 9 November 1927, in Augusta, Maine, the son of the late Anselme and Marie-Ange (Poulin) Arbour. Jerry was predeceased in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Norma Gates Arbour, and his sister,Jeanne D'Arc Daigle. Mr. Arbour was a veteran of the US Army and Merchant Marines. He was most proud of being an interpreter for Dwight D. Eisenhower while being stationed in Paris, France. He owned and operated Jerry Arbour IceCream Distributorship Inc. which he built from scratch and serviced primarily Vermont and the New England area. He employed several people throughout the years. He was also a well-respected state representative for the state of Vermont. Mr. Arbour will best be remembered for his kind generosity, his love of life, his ability to bring out the best in people, and for his keen ability to walk into a room and make people happy! But far more important, he will always be remembered forthe deep love he had for his family -- they were everything to him. Heis survived by his loving children, Gerard J. My sincere condolences to the Arbour family. I have such fond memories esp. loading the trucks full of ice cream. It was a summer job in high school.Gerard had such a beautiful voice, there were manya saturday night after a night of dinner and dancing that the legion group would cometo our family home and my mom would fix a big breakfast and as usual Ifound my way to the entertainment center(kimble organ) and play with Gerard behind me singing. Augusta -- Albenie C. Dufour, 72, died Friday, 30 Sept 2011, at his home following a long illness. He was born in Madawaska on 31 July 1939, ason of the late Ernest and Aline (Gendreau) Dufour. Mr. Dufour had been employed as a barber at Pats Barber Shop in Augusta, by Statler Tissue, Bates Mfg -- Edwards Division, and Carleton Woolen Mills. He was a communicant of St Augustine Catholic Church, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and was a diehard New York Yankees fan. When he wasn't pursuing his passions for hunting, fishing, making maple syrup, or cutting firewood, he could be found watching the Red Sox lose or his Yankees win on his big screen TV. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, especially Lori, and MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center at Glenridge, especially Gail, Emily and Mary for the care and compassion they showed to Albenie and his family duringhis stay with them. Mr. Dufour was predeceased by a sister, Theresa Beaulieu. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lorraine (Arbour) Dufour of Augusta; three sons, Donald Dufour and his wife, Donna, ofAugusta,Paul Dufour and his wife, Rachel, of Augusta and Kenneth Dufour and his significant other, Ginny Coull, of Vassalboro; a daughter, Michelle Dufour of Readfield; a brother, Lloyd Dufour of Madawaska; seven sisters, Blanche Guerette of Frenchville, Alice Chasse of Frenchville, Yvette Ayotte of New Britain, CT, Florence Ralph of New Britain, Norma Lachance of Manchester, NH, Leonette Millerof Long Island, NY, and Omerine Kingsbury of Derry, NH; seven grandchildren, Cameron and AlyssaDufour, Courtney, Mackenzie, and Connor Dufour, and Brooke and Jillian Taylor; twobrothers-in-law, Frank Arbour of Sidney and Roger Arbour and his wife,Kim, of Augusta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins and a special friend, Nancy Arbour of Augusta. Relatives and friends may visitfrom 2to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, 4 Oct, at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 5 Oct, at 11 am at St Augustine Catholic Church, Northern Avenue, Augusta. Burial and committal prayers will follow in Holy Family Cemetery, Townsend Road, Augusta. Augusta -- Philippe J. "Phil" Arbour, 61, of Eight Rod Road died 9 March 2004, at the veterans hospital at Togus after a brief illness. He wasborn in Augusta on 25 Oct 1942, the son of Leo Arbour and Jeanne d'Arc(Douin) Arbour. Phil servedhonorablyin the Army during the Vietnam War. He was employed by Al's Double R's Taxi for several years prior to his retirement. He was previously employed by the Augusta Civic Center, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Veterans Center at Togus and by EdwardsMfg. Co. for 27 years. Surviving are his wife, Nancy N. (Thibodeau) Arbour of Augusta; an aunt, Gertrude Arbour of Augusta; and several cousins. There will be no public visiting hours. Committal prayers will beoffered 11 amTuesday, 16 March, in thechapel at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta, with the Rev. Raymond Lagace, Catholic chaplain from the Veterans Affairs center at Togus, officiating.
