Vital's Burial Record, as translated by Scott LaVINE on 02 May 2007: "Thetenth of August, 1854, we the undersigned priest completed the burialin the cemetery of Notre Dame of St-Hyacinthe, the body of Vital Harbour, tailleur de pierres (stone mason) of this parish, spouse of Mary Colgin, deceased yesterday at theage of forty-one years. Present were Francois Gendron and Edouard Phaneuf who did not know how to sign."

From Denis ARBOUR on 25 Apr 2007: I found the death record in two different sources, one of them being a listing of the religious records pertaining to the people working on the digging the Beauharnois Canal (1842-1845). This makes me believe that our Vital (Jean-Chrysostôme's father) is not a native of the area. That he just moved there to work on the Canal.Iknow that "Jean-Chrysostôme" was a popular name in the Bellechasse and Gaspé areas but it is unseen elsewhere. Maybethis could be a clue to Vital's origins...

This is quite probable as Vital's occupationis listed in every source as mason. Many masons were no doubt employed to build the retaining walls of the canal.

From Wikipedia on 29 Apr 2007: The Beauharnois Canal is a Canadian canal located in southwestern Quebec. The canal is part of the St Lawrence Seaway. Located between the cities of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and Beauharnois, the canal connects Lake Saint-Francis to the west (upstream) with Lake Saint-Louis to the northeast (downstream), bypassing a series of rapids on the St Lawrence River. The original Beauharnois Canal measured 15 nm (24 km) in length and was built on the south side of the StLawrence River, opening in 1845. The canal became obsolete and was superseded by the Soulanges Canal in 1899 whichranon the north side of the St Lawrence River. The present Beauharnois Canal was built between 1930-1932 on the south side of the St Lawrence River, measuring 25.7 km in length. This canal was built as part of a hydroelectric development atBeauharnois which saw a dam and power house built to take advantage of the 25 m (83 ft drop between Lake St Francis and Lake St Louis. Some ofthe electricity is used to power a large aluminum smelter. In the 1950s, the Beauharnois Canal anditstwo locks were enlarged as part of the StLawrence Seaway project.

From Scott LaVINE on 08 Jun 2007: I have slowly worked my way down the river and down the highway looking for the marriage record without luck. I also have done some research on where the Irish immigrants tended to settle when they emigrated but ithasn't helped. Interesting about this child born in 1846 . . . perhaps there are others born in the Montreal area. I also looked around Chambly as a canal on theRichelieu River was built between 1833-1843. Thought he might have found work on thatproject but no luck yet in the local churches. I wonder if he might have found his way into Ontario. The canal at Cornwall was constructed between 1834-42. Just some ideas.

Note: From SCO to ScottLAVINE on 21 May 2007: I have been trying to imagine where Vital and Mary could have married. We have him in St-Vallier from 1812 until probably at least 1827.Hethen appears in the Chateauguayarea in Jul 1843, followed closely by Beauharnois County from Aug 1843- Aug 1844. In Jan 1851, they are in Sherbrooke. In Aug 1854, they arein St-Hyacinthe. Yes, major arteries do seem to connect these areas,but it is so unusual to be so scattered in the early 1800s. From where hegrew up in St-Vallier to the burial of his second child is about 200 mi! From there to Sherbrooke is another 150 mi. Anyway, I suppose we could look at all the churches along what is now highway 55 from St-Vallier to Chateauguay

From Scott LaVINE on 31 Mar 2007: I always thought that Vital Arbour died sometime priorto 1912 and that my grandmother Margaret had come to Malone condsiderably earlier than 1918. They did live with Monsignor Edouard Blanchard who was pastor at Notre Dame church in Malone. Father Blanchard died in 1923. The first mention of Margaret Arbour in the Malone Farmer occurs in July 1912 when she won a $5 award at the St Joseph'sSchool commencement. I do have a photo of Vital and Rose Blanchard Arbour and I also have their original marriage contract in my collection back in Norwood, NY. Rose Arbour died suddenly on 19 March 1925 of heartdisease at the home of Gilbert and Margaret Arbour LaVine.

From Scott LaVINE on 01 May 2007: The mystery deepens. The Malone Farmer online newspaper makes no mention of him dying in Malone as it did other close relatives of Father Blanchard. I wasjust 21 when Margaret Arbour LaVine died and the story we were always told was that my grandmother had come to Malone to live after her father had died....no mention of him dying in Malone. I wonder if he had come to Malone for medical help or if he was stricken here while visiting Father Blanchard. Grandmother had a relative who died in a fire. We always thought that was her father, but perhaps it was her grandfather, the 1st Vital. Your researchindicated that he was only about40 when he died. Hmmmm?

 Apparently, Andre and family lived in Massachusetts from about 1872 through 1880, but then moved to Quebec before the 1881 Census. What happened to Andre and Mary's 3 daughters who lived with themin 1880but not in 1881? Two of these daughters appeared again in 1900, when the family lived in Fitchburg, MA, along with their son who was born in late 1881. Perhaps the family never really lived in Quebec in 1881. Perhaps they left Quebecin 1872 and everyone believed they would return home one day so told the census taker in 1881 that they still livedthere. Then again, maybe the family did move away in 1872, but Andre and wife returned home in 1881 to visit family or to settletheir Canadian affairs before returning to Massachusetts.By the Census of 1910, Andre and Mary had 6 children, only 5 of whom were living.
--> How can this be? In the 1920 Census, after Andre had died, Mary lived with 4 of their grown children, 3 of whom weremarried but did nothave their spouses with them.

On 9 Apr 1891, the Census enumerator visited the Arbour family in St-Raphael, QC. Sadly, the family had buried Louise just the day before and were no doubt mired in profound grief.

On 20 Feb 1918, Hilaire and Delphine travelled to the US via the port of Newport, VT. They left son Exear in St-Raphael, QC, and were going tojoin their daughter Donalda BOIVIN in Sa.., MA. Hilaire was last in the US in1900 when he went to MA. Delphine was previously in the US for 11 months during 1890 in Winstead, CT. Hilaire was noted to b 5'10" witha medium complexion, grey hair, and blue eyes. Delphine was noted to be 5'3" with a medium complexion, black hair, and brown eyes. They carried $95 with them.

But there seemsto be no record of them actually having received the land. Perhaps this is when they decided to emigrate to the US. In 1890, the Honoré Mercier government, observing that it was "advisable, following the example of past centuries, to give marks of consideration for fruitfulness in the sacred bonds of matrimony," passed alaw entitled An Act to confer a privilege upon fathers or mothers of families who have twelve children living (53 Vict., c. 26). The Act granted 100 acres of public landsfree of charge to parents of 12 living children born in lawful wedlock. The measure harkens back the 17th century, when Louis XIV took measures to encourage births in Canada. In that era, inhabitants who managed to have 10 children living, born inlawful wedlock, excluding priests, monks and nuns, could receive an annual pension of 300 pounds. The pension was increased to 400 pounds if the number of children reached 12. To have the benefit of the law of 1890, an eligible father or mother had to present a petition to the Provincial Secretary, accompanied by his or her certificate of marriage, a certificate of birth of each of his or her children, and a certificate sworn before a justice of the peace giving the number and names of the children. After examining the petition and certificates, the Provincial Secretaryreported to the Lieutenant-Governor in Council. If the latter granted the petition, an order was passed to that effect and a copy was sent tothe Commissioner of Crown Lands, who had the duty of granting the petitioner the 100 acres he had selected. On 30 December 1890 (54 Vict., c.19), the legislature changed certain provisions. Now, the religious minister of the place where the petitioner lived had to certify the truthof the facts alleged by the petitioner. A certificate of birth of eachchild was no longer required, and thepetition was now addressed to the Commissionerof Agriculture and Colonization. In 1892, it was specified that the 100 acres of land had to be selected out of the public landsfit for cultivation, for sale and available at the time of selection, in the township, parish or unorganized territory where the petitioner lived or, if no such lands were available, in the township, parish or unorganized territory closest to where the petitioner lived (55-56 Vict.,c. 19). In 1895, an amendment to the "Twelve Children Act" specified that the lands were granted by location ticket, subject to the usual conditions of settlement. Asof June 1904, persons entitled to land could obtain a $50.00 premium instead. Finally, in May 1905, a new law abolished grants of land and premiums to families with 12 or more children (5 Ed. VII, c.16), thereby terminating the government aid program. Between1890 and 1905, of the 5,413 families officially recognized, 4,977 received a lot or a premium under the Act. Despite certain difficulties of administration, the Act was of particular benefit to people who did notown the land they livedon, that is, bearers of location tickets and squatters, who had to be granted the land they already occupied. 15 Feb 1857 -- Cleophas ARBOUR was born in St-Raphael, QC, as the 8th of 9 children of Michel ARBOUR and MargueriteDUBREUIL. Cleophas came from a long line of farmers and continued that trend for himself. On 05 Feb 1883, he wed 15-year old Marie-Melina PICARD. From 1884 to 1899, Melina gave them 11 children, alsocontinuing the trend of a fantastic Catholic birthrate. In 1900, the large family decided to further the emigration trend of many ARBOURs before them when they moved to Willimantic, Connecticut. However, the move seems to have sealed Cleophas' fate. He became ill and just 8 days later he was dead of acute pneumonia on 05 Jul 1902, at the age of45. He was buried in St Joseph's Catholic Cemeteryin Willimantic, CT. Melina lived many more years, seeing at least 18 grandchildren born, before she died in Willimantic on 12 Oct 1930.

10 June 1913 -- Born in St-Raphael, Quebec, Joseph-Ernest ARBOUR was the youngest of 12 children of farmer Jean-Chrysostome ARBOUR and his wife Sophie MERCIER. Ernest married 17-year old Amanda CHABOT in Armagh, QC, on 05 February 1893. Settling inSt-Philemon, QC, they began their family of 12 children, consisting of at least 5 daughters and 6 sons. During the 1901 Census, Ernest and Amanda owned a one-room house on 50 acres of Concession 1, Lot 17, southeast of the river. In 1905, they followed the southbound call of prosperity when they emigrated to the United States, finding their home in Warwick, Rhode Island. While in Quebec,Ernest worked as a driller, but upon his arrival in RI, he became employed in the textile industry, firstas a cotton mill laborer and later as a color mixer in a dye house. Amanda died in 1917 at the age of 42, just a few short years after the birth of their youngest child. How Ernest managed his household full of children can only be answered by thechildren themselves: theymust have all pulled together to take care of one another. Ernest was about 64 when he died in 1935. We know of 5 grandchildren and a single great-grandchild for him.

Shortly after the little girl's baptism, Philomene must have left the baby with her parents, as it was no doubt next to impossible for a single mother to raise a child. According to Caroline BICKERSTAFF, Alice left James and infant son William at some point. The family has always understood that she did sometimes watch her son from a distance as he played in the school yard. His name was William Leon Messer, born 21 JUL 1897 in Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA

According to the 1920 Census, Alice was widowed, living in Boston, and renting a room from Catherine SHEPHERD.

Perhaps our Alice is the Alice M. SULLIVAN living in Boston in Apr 1940. She rented an apartment for $45 per month at 1376 Commonwealth Ave, where she had also lived in Apr 1935. She worked as a Clerk/Typist for an Accounting firm, where she made $2100 in 1939. She stated that she had graduated from high school. This Alice did say she was single and wasborn in Massachusetts in about 1880.

The Alice from 1940 is likely also the Alice M. SULLIVAN living in Boston in Apr 1930. She rented an apartment for $50 per month at 1990 Commonwealth Ave. She worked as a Clerk in Stocks & Bonds. This Alice was also single and was born inNew Hampshire in about 1880 to parents whowere born in Ireland.

Unless something changed between her freewheeling youth and 1930, neither of these seems to fit what we know about our Alice.

Looking back even further toJan 1920, we find the new Alice living in Boston as a Lodger with Ella A. Stratton. She worked as a Bookkeeper fora Banker. She was also single and was born in New Hampshire in about 1881 to parents born in New Hampshireand Ireland.

So we are back to the drawing board with finding Alice after 1920. Perhaps she married again and could be found under a different last name.

Our Joseph was possibly the Joseph ARBOUR born Oct 1877 in QC and living as a boarder with Charles MALLEFONTAINE at 185 Fremont Street in Lowell, MA, in 1900, with wife Anna ..., who was born Jan 1881 in QC. This Joseph worked as a machinist at a hosiery factory and his wife Anna worked as a linker at a hosiery factory. Anna migrated to the US in 1893 and the young couple was married eight months before the Census, in about Jul 1899. They became Naturalized Citizens in 1917. In 1920, they rented a house at 208 French Street in Lowell, MA, with his sister-in-law Melina PELOQUIN, who was born about 1886 in QC, was a widow, and workedas a looper ina stocking factory.That year, Joseph worked as a machinist at a machine shop and Anna no longer worked outside the home. They appear to have had no children.[1900&1920Census]

Our Joseph also possibly lived with brother Louis in Winsted, CT, in 1913, moved to Canada in 1915, and returned to Winsted in 1916. In 1922, this Joseph moved to New Britain, CT.

Our Joseph also possibly lived in Lowell, MA, and married Eva ...

According to his WWI Draft Registration, Joseph was of medium height with a stout build. He had brown eyes and brown hair.

Demerise was noted to be 5'3" tall with a medium complexion, brown hair, and green eyes; she also had goiter problems. Juliette had a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. Albert had a medium complexion, light brown hair, and brown eyes. The family carried $530 with them.

  06 May 1881 -- Born in St-Raphael, Quebec, Guillaume ARBOUR was the 5thof 9 children of farmer and sawand grist mill operator Hilaire ARBOUR and his wife Marie-Louise LECLERC. William married 20-year old DemeriseRABY in St-Raphael on 16 June 1908. Immediately after this, the young couple moved to the United States and settled in Lowell, Massachusetts,where William worked as a fixer at a hosiery mill and Demerise worked as a stitcher at a hosiery mill. They only resided in the US fora few years, however, before packing up for the long trek to Saskatchewan. William must have moved his family to Zenon Park, SK, to take advantage ofthe Homesteading Act. This provision soldfolks 160 acres for$10 -- a deal they could not get backin Quebec or Ontario, or even in the US. In 1911, their first of 3 children was born in Zenon Park, although one died while young. William worked as a tanner that year. In 1916 and in 1922, his occupation was reported as farmer, but the family knew him to be a carpenter, making cupboards, doors, butter churns, etc. In May 1922, William and family travelled tothe US via the port of Montreal, QC. The family carried $530 with them. Despite their good intentions, the family did not stay in the US. By November 1925, they were back in Saskatchewan, where they seem to have livedcontinuously through 1949 and even into 1952. William died in Zenon Park on 09 January 1952. He was buried there in Zenon Park Cemetery. Shortly after this, Demerise moved to Kelowna, British Columbia, to live with Juliette. She apparently died there but we have no details of herdemise. William and Demerise are responsible for 11 grandchildren and an unknown number of great-grandchildren.

  Living in Louis and Eugenie's house in 1921 was Joseph ARBOUR. It is unclear how he is related. Joseph was an employee of the WH Company.

  3 IN HOSPITAL AS THE RESULT OF AUTO ACCIDENTS -- Daniel Quinn, 65, Run Down by Unidentified Motorist and Louis Arbour Badly Injured in Trolley-Auto Collision
  Three Winsted residents are patients in the hospital today as the result of two weekend automobile accidents. Daniel Quinn, about 65, is undergoing treatment at the institution for painful body bruises received Saturday night when he was struck by an unidentified motorist. The accident occurred near the farm of Fon... Bushnell on the New Hartford Road, where Mr. Quinn is employed. The injured man was found lying unconscious on the side of the road by a Hartford motorist who notified the police department. Motorcycle Policeman Waldo Heath and officer James Mike (?) were dispatched by Supt. Slocum to conduct an investigation. It is believed Quinn was struck several hours before he was found by a motorist who failed to stop. No trace of the driver of the car has yet been identified. Louis Arbour is in the hospital in a serious condition as theresult of injuries sustained Saturday night when an automobile in which he was a passenger collided with the 11 o'clock trolley car operatedby Motorman Healey of Burrville, in front of the Strong Mfg Co on Main Street. Jeremiah Roy, driver of the machine, is a patient in the same institution, recovering from lesser injuries. The accident occurred whenRoy, after turning into Main Streetfrom Park Place, swung west into the center lane of the thoroughfare street directly in the path of the trolley, which was Torrington bound. Arbour received several deep wounds, besides internal injuries. Roy was painfully cut by flying glass. Theautomobile was demolished. The light on the trolley and the front window were broken by the impact.

  Louis Arbour, 39, died at the hospital late Tuesday of injuries sustained Saturday night when an automobile in which he was a passenger collided with one of the Connecticut Company's trolley cars in charge of Motorman Edward Healey of Burrville, onMain Street, near the Strong Mfg Co. Arbour was injured internally andalso suffered deep lacerations aboutthe head and face. Jeremiah Roy, driver ofthe automobile, is still undergoing treatment at the hospital. Mr. Arbour was born in Quebec but resided in Winsted for the past 22 years. Until recently he was engaged in the trucking business. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Bertha,Leona, and Helen Arbour; his parents, who live in Quebec; five brothers, Joseph of Lowell, MA, John of Boston, William of Saskatchewan, Canada, George and Eugene of Quebec; and three sisters, Mrs. Alice Sullivan of Boston, MA, Mrs. Beatrice Roy and Mrs. Eva Boyblon of Quebec. The funeral will be held from his late home on Main street tomorrow morning at 8:30 and at St Joseph's Church at 9:00. Burial will be in St Joseph's Cemetery.

  10 April 1885 -- Born in St-Raphael, QC, Joseph-Louis ARBOUR was the 7th of 9 children of farmer, sawyer, and carpenter Hilaire ARBOUR and hiswife Marie-Louise LECLERC. Louis held several occupations during his life: Farmer (1901); Carpenter and Press Room Foreman with the William L. Gilbert Clock Company (1918-1921); and later owned a Trucking Companyuntil he was put out of business by E. J. Kelly. InSt-Raphael on 09 June 1908, Louis married 19-year old Virginie BOUTIN. The young couple then made a southerly trek which brought them to Connecticut, where they settled into the community of Winsted. During the year after their wedding, Louis and Louise welcomed their only child, a daughter named Bertha Alma ARBOUR, into their home. According to his WWI Draft Registration, Louis was noted to be tall with a medium build, brown eyes, and blackhair. During the Spanish Influenza Epidemic of 1918, poor Virginie succumbed to the illness. After her death, her body was transported back toQuebec for burial in St-Raphael. As Louis was also ill with the flu, he was unable to attend the services. Although Louis also contracted the illness luck was with him and he survived, only to meet a tragic deatha few years later. On 16 February 1920, Louis married to 24-year old Eugenie BERNARD. Louis and Eugenie then had 2 daughters: Leona Rita and Helen, both of whom were just little girls at their father's untimely death. 16 April 1876 -- Born in St-Raphael, QC, Leon ARBOUR was the 2nd of 12 children of farmer and later mill employee Jean-Michel ARBOUR and his wife Josephine LESSARD. These 12 children are the reason Michel and Josephinewere able to apply for a special land grant from the Government ofQuebec, which extended such a privilege to families simply because they had 12 children. However, it is not clear that Michel and Josephine ever received their land, as they decidedto emigrate to the US in about 1898, initially settling in the Willimantic, Connecticut, area. Just a few years after their arrival, Leon married 18-year old Sophronie BERTRAND in Willimantic on 21 June 1901. Between 1902and 1916, Leon and Sophronie had 10 children born in Connecticut, Quebec, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, indicating how much they moved around. Throughout his life, Leon supported his family in various ways: Cotton Weaver (1900),Carpenter at a Mill (1910), Machinist withanAuto Repair Company (1918), Repairman with an Auto Shop (1920). According to his WWI Draft Registration, Leon was of medium height and medium build, withbrown eyes and grey hair. Leon was just 49 when he died in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on 09 July1925. Sophronie then enlisted a partner to assist her in raising her children. On 15 October 1927 in Holyoke, Sophronie married 47-year old Jeremie GIROUX. Sophronie was 66 when she died in Holyoke on 07 January 1950. Leon and Sophronie gave rise to17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

 Our William has not yet been found in the 1910 US Census. Is it possible that he moved back to Canada for a time? There is a William ARBOUR living in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in 1911 during the Census taken in June of that year. He lived on 25-47-13 W2 with his wife, known simply as Mrs. Arbour. Perhaps they were not at home when the census enumerator visited and a neighbor gave the information instead. He was listed as being 28, having been born in 1883; she was listed as being 26, having been born in 1885. Both were born in Quebec, spoke French, and were of the Catholic religion. William was a farmer.

Funeral service was held this morning from the P. N. Anctil Funeral Home at 8 for Mrs. Alma (Arbour) Ayotte, followed by a solemn high mass ofrequiem at 9 at St Louis de Gonzague Church before a large attendance of relatives and friends, many coming from Haverhill, MA. Also present was adelegation of students from St Amselm's College, where Mrs. Ayotte's son is studying. Very Rev. Paul Desaulniers, PR, was the celebrant and was assisted by Rev. Gerard Comtois as deacon and Rev. Edmond Guay as sub-deacon. Also attending was Rev. Paul Houde of St Anselm's faculty. The bearers were: Raymond StOnge, Omer Arbour, Albert Marquis, Raoul Marquis, Wilbrod Paris, and Frederick Migneault. Burial was in the family lot in the St Louis de Gonzague Cemetery under the direction of P. N. Anctil, undertaker and funeral director. Committal prayers at the grave were said by Rev. Father Comtois and Father Houde.

On 9 Jul 1919, William again returned to Canada, this time via the portof St-Armand, QC. The 33-year old baker claimed he was born in St-Raphael, QC, and was coming to Canada to stay. His last address in the US was 237 Main St, Willimantic, CT. He claimed he had been in the US since25 Nov 1916, which is corroborated by the above entry. William had a train ticket from Willimantic to Montreal, QC, aboard Train #3. He was in apparent "good" health and carried with him $175. It was also noted that William could both read and write.

Connecticut School Age Certificates, 1904-1911 -- These certificates vouched for a young person's right to work. As the 20th century opened, the issue of child labor had risen to prominence in the labor movement. Thanks to reformers like Florence Kelley, Jane Addams, and Mother Jones, people were starting to take notice, and some states began regulatinghours and conditions in which children could work. Connecticut startedestablishing educational requirements for working children in 1869. By1882, working children betweenthe ages of 8 and 14 were required to attend at least 12 weeks of school, and in 1895, children under the age of 14 were prohibited from working in "gainful employment" at all. In 1899, additional legislation gave teeth to the law by imposing a $20-per-week fine. To ensure compliance, employers had to keep proof of age fortheir child employees on file, but proof could be hard to come by, particularly in the cases of many young immigrants. The Connecticut State Board of Education helped with oversight of child laborers and, beginning in 1903, could issue certificates for children over 14 as proof of age.

On 9 May 1906, Amedee applied for a School Age Certificate, D8. His birth date was recorded as 12 May 1892 -- but we know this to be in error,as the church records show him born and baptised in 1893. He was really only 13 (not quite) at the time, but there must have been a compelling reason for him to try to quit school and go to work. His father had died a few years earlier. Perhaps Amedee's mother was burdened with the other children and just could not bother keeping him in school; perhapsthey needed themoney he could earn. On 14 Sep 1907, Amedee was definitely issued a School Age Certificate, C254. His birthdate was recorded as 12 Mar 1892, according to his mother's testimony. Amedee was reported to be a Learning Craftsman.

 Connecticut School Age Certificates, 1904-1911 -- These certificates vouched for a young person'sright to work. As the 20th century opened, the issue of child labor had risen to prominence in thelabor movement. Thanks to reformers like Florence Kelley, Jane Addams, and Mother Jones, people were starting to take notice, and some states began regulating hours and conditions in which children could work. Connecticut started establishingeducational requirements for working children in 1869. Anna ran a small luncheonette in a building in the front called Anna's Luncheonette for a few years. They later moved to 20 Hare Street in West Warwick, where they lived until my grandfather died in 1970. Anna later moved in with my parents while they were living at 46 Helen Avenue, Coventry RI. In 1977-78we moved to 29 Gardner Avenue, in West Warwick. You might note a similarity with the address that Anna was born (10 Gardner), that address nolonger exists, as Gardner ave now starts wth 25. Both my Grandmother and Grandfather were mill workers, Fabric & Dye works for the most part, as far as I know.
