Notes:

As a young man, Jean-Baptiste seems to have left the protection of the family flock. Most of his family remained in L'Assomption County, but he moved to neighboring Joliette County. His brothers Alexandre and Narcisse appear to have joined him at some point.

Jean-Baptiste was a farmer by vocation but still found time to serve his neighbors by fighting in the Papineau Rebellion (or French Uprising) at St Eustace in 1837 against the British and the Family Compact. This Rebellion was the result of Quebec citizens' dissatisfaction with theirlack of autonomy and their resentment of the rigid, mainly English, political establishment.

Jean-Baptiste and Emelie apparently stayed in Joliette County for all of their married lives. Their 20 children are confirmed to have been born there. Initially, they lived in the city of Joliette, in the parish of St Paul l'Industrie, wherethirteen children were born and baptised. We know they lived here at the beginning of 1842 because they were therefor the Census. However, the baptism of daughter Zoe, born in October 1842 has not been found in St Paul's Church. Around thistime, the family moved to the parish of St-Charles-de-Borromèe, also in Joliette City,where the last six childrenare confirmed to have been born and baptised. Some speculation also exists that Jean-Baptiste may have even had two wives. This idea seems to stem fments de l'e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»rom the opinion proffered by a priest in Quebec in 1995, as related by Teresa and Irene ARBOUR. Theoretically, only a rare woman would give birth to this many children. However, all 20 children, born over 26 years, are confirmed to have been borne by our dear Emelie.

Emelie also became godmother to the couple's first grandchild, even while she would become a mother again herself. In June 1853, she held little Joseph Jean-Baptiste ARBOUR at the baptismal font at St-Charles-de-Borromèe Church in Joliette City. Between 1854 and 1861, the family left the city to spread their wings in the countryside. In 1863, a new village was incorporated a little further north in Joliette County. Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie islocated along the Black River and this is where the family settled. In 1870, the parish church opened there and by then it appears as though the ARBOURs dominated the town, as many of them farmed thearea and they represented more than one-third of the 200 inhabitants. Prior to the parish church opening in 1870, the family attended church in the neighboring community of St-Jean-de-Matha.

Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's land later included a small trout-fishing lake. The property was located between Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie and St-Côme, about four miles inside the edge of the forest, and could very easily have been the farm on which the fments de l'e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab»amily lived when they moved to Ste-Emelie'de-l'Energie. They built a barn and a small house on the property. Eventually, the land was passed to their daughter, grandson, great-grandson, and then great-great-grandson. Regrettably, the great-great-grandson, Jean CHARTIER-ROBERT, was forced to sell the estate in the 1960s due to his financial circumstances.

Jean-Baptiste and Emelie were still living in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie in April of 1881. They were recorded in the Census living with their sonJoseph and his wife Virginie. They were not living with them in 1891, as they had both died by then.

The period from the 1860s through the 1880s was marked with great change for the country of Canada, due mostly to governmental and industrial forces. The large industry of the time was that of cutting and selling timber, as Canada had immense stands of red and white pine. There was agradual migration of married French bushworkers from Quebec into Ontario during this heyday of lumbering and they brought their families withthem. One group of immigrants followed the lumber trail up the OttawaValley to Mattawa and Timiskaming, then west to North Bay, Sturgeon Falls, and Sudbury. One of Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's descendants took thisroute and maybe others followed later on. In addition, five of the brood are known to have left the Joliette nest and migrated to Ontario viaa different course. An early group advanced with the lumber trade through Glengarry County, along the north shore of Lake Ontario, up the Trent Valley to Lake Simcoe, and eventually into the Georgian Bay area.This is where we can find many of Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's descendants even today.

Although six of Jean-Baptiste and Emelie's children moved to Ontario, as many as eight of them seem to have remained quite close to the familyhomestead -- at least for a time.

Jean-Baptiste and Adeline settled in Joliette City, where they had 16 children over the next 23 years, seven daughters and nine sons. Sadly, though, at least five of them did not live beyond childhood. Adeline also became godmother to Jean-Baptiste's sister Marie-Adrianna in August 1854 in Joliette City. Both Jean-Baptiste and Adeline became godparents to his cousin's son Jean-Baptiste ARBOUR in October 1856 in Joliette City. Adeline then passed away in December 1892 at just 58-years old. Togive him a companion in his old age, Jean-Baptiste decided to remarry four years after Adeline's death.

Jean-Baptiste and second wife Melina were living in Joliette City in 1901. They owned a five-room house on ¼ acre at 25 St Antoine Street. That was also the location of Jean-Baptiste's blacksmithingshop, where he earned $300 that year.

Jean-Baptiste was 66-years old when he passed away in February 1907. Melina lived for a long time after his death. She was 100-years old when she died in 1935.

In January1886, Louis and Sidonie served as godparents to their grandson in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. Their next appearance was in Midland, Ontario, as godparents for their niece Mary Louise ARBOURin July 1886.

Once in Ontario, Louis and Sidonie settled in Waubaushene to begin employment with the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. They then served as godparents to several additional family youngsters: great-nephew Alphonse JEAN in June 1887, granddaughter MariaAva ARBOUR in January 1892, and grandson Armos ARBOUR in January 1895, all baptised in Midland.

In 1890, Louis was a tenant farmer on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. The 1891 Census also shows them living in Waubaushene.

Soon after Sidonie's death, Louis appears to have abandoned his farmingefforts and moved into town. By April 1901, widowed and living with his three youngest sons, Louis owned a four-room house withan outbuildingon ¼ acre of Concession 10,Lot 10,C'est ave?e acusaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»in the town of Waubaushene. He earned $275 that year at the mill. By May 1911, Louis and son Alexander lived with daughter Elide and family.

After their wedding, Pierre and Caroline lived in Joliette City for a time. By 1871, they lived in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, where they had 17 children, eleven daughters and six sons. In 1871, Pierre was reported as a farmer in Ste-Emelie, aswere many of his brothers. Perhaps Pierre received one of the two Land Grants for property in Joliette County, Quebec, that were given to Pierre ARBOURs in 1876 and in 1880.

The family was still living in Ste-Emelie in 1881, in 1891, and in 1901. In 1901, they owned an eight-room house plus 10 outbuildings and one vacant house on 282 acres of the 1st Range, Joliette Canton.

Over their lives, Pierre and Caroline became godparents to seven familyyoungsters: nephew Octave HOULE in September 1873, niece Exerine ARBOUR in November 1877, grandson Eldege BLAIS in December 1886, grandson Homer Elize COUTU in March 1889, granddaughter Esther Eulalie COUTU in April 1896, grandson Joseph Thomas Camille ARBOUR in April 1901, and grandson Lucien ARBOUR in April 1905, all in Ste-Emelie. Pierre was also witness at the funeral of niece Georgiana ARBOUR in March 1879 in Ste-Emelie.

Six of Pierre and Caroline's children are known to have migrated to theUnited States of America to settle in the State of Massachusetts. Perhaps more of them also left Canada to weave their stories within the neighboring country.

--> Note on 19 Apr 2011: We now know that Pierre and Caroline lived in MA themselves for a time in the early 1880s. They were found there by Jun 1881, when daughter Rosalie died. Initially, the young family lived in Joliette City. However, by 1870, they moved further north to settle in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, along with other family. They lived there through 1880. After thistime, though, they may have moved away, but it isunknown when or where.

Caroline and Elie had 11 children, five daughters and six sons. They also became godparents four times, once at St-Jean-de-Matha and thrice atSte-Emelie: niece Emilie ARBOUR in October 1862, nephew Charles LASALLE baptised in June 1871, as well asniece Vercheres ARBOUR and nephew Louis ARBOUR, both baptised in February 1878.

It is unknown exactly when or where Caroline and Elie passed away. Theyhad both passed away prior to the wedding of their daughter Georgiana in September 1897.

Francois-Xavier ARBOUR I is the first in a line of several Francois-Xaviers within the ARBOUR family. In the early years in Quebec, when France was encouraging colonization and the expansion of Catholicism, the Church sent a well-respected vicar apostolic. In 1659, the Jesuit-trainedBishop Francois-Xavier deLAVAL-MONTMORENCY arrived to take command of the missions and to found parishes. This is possibly whom our Jean-Baptiste and Emelie ARBOUR were honoring when they named their fifth son. However, they also may have been simply naming him after his godfather, as was very common at the time.This Francois-Xavier was simply known as"Xavier."

At the time of his wedding, Xavier was reportedly from St-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec, a small village north of Joliette City. However, at least initially, the young couple seems to have set up home in Joliette City, where their first child was born. They did remain in Joliette County after this, but it is unknown exactly where, perhaps near the parish of St-Jean-de-Matha or the parish of St-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez. Xavier and Nathalie eventually had a large family of 13 children, although four of them are believed to have died in childhood. They also became godparents to the first two children of Xavier's brother Magloire's: niece Emelie ARBOUR in June 1867 in St-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec, and nephew Alphonse ARBOUR in November 1868 in St-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez, Quebec. Later, Xavier and Nathalie decided to uproot their family and move to Simcoe County, Ontario, for work in the lumber industry. They arrived in Ontario possibly around summer 1868, judging by the locations of their children's births. Little Nathalie was born in February 1868 in Joliette County, Quebec. The next child to be born was Francois-Xavier in April 1869 in Belle Ewart, Ontario, which is located in Simcoe County. Xavier's familyprobably arrived with his youngerbrother Basile, possibly just a few months after his sister Zoe and her family. Younger brother Magloire and older brother Louis most likely did not arrive until about 1883 to 1884. Xavier and Nathalie were recorded in the 1871 Census with their five oldest children, living in Innisfil Township in Simcoe County, on thewestern shore of Lake Simcoe. They seem to have settled in the town ofBelle Ewart, as four of their children were born there. In 1871, Xavier was also recorded in the DominionDirectory, as a laborer living in Belle Ewart. The family appears to have stayed in this community throughabout July 1874 before moving again. After the six- or seven-year stint at the Sage and McGraw Mill, Xavier found his work disappearing alongwith the larger trees in the forests. In 1875, the Midland Railway - so called because of its Midland terminus - was completed to Waubaushene. The family knew of the Georgian Bay Lumber Company in northern SimcoeCounty, centered in the community ofWaubaushene. Xavier and Nathalie decided to move once again to seek their fortunes elsewhere. By April 1881, the family was living just outside Waubaushene in Tay Township, onthe south end of the Georgian Bay. In 1887 and in 1890, Xavier was knownto be a tenant farmer on Concession 11, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. In 1887, records confirm that Xavier was indeedone of the 200 employees of the Georgian Bay Lumber Company, which shipped 27 million board feet oflumber by rail and 23 millionboard feet by water that year. In 1894, Xavier finally became a landowner when he purchased a farm in Waubaushene on Concession 10, Lot 9. By 1901, the family owned 80 acres of Concession 9, Lot 10. On that property they had two houses with six rooms each,plustwo barns. By the age of 62, Xavier appears to have departed the lumber business to devote his efforts to farming.

After her children left home, Nathalie appears to have begun her own career. For many years, she was known as Mrs. ARBOUR the Milliner. Nathalie was a fine, attractive woman with a great deal of talent. She made splendid hats in her shop in the front part of their home, which sat next to the Waubaushene Hotel. The large front window displayed her wares.

Throughout their lives, Xavier and Nathalie took on the responsibility of being godparents to 12 more of the family's children: future daughter-in-law Louise GRENIER in Barrie in September 1872, nephew William ARBOUR in Barrie in January 1873, niece Emelie GREGOIRE (Xavier only) in Penetanguishene in October 1876, niece Josephine GREGOIRE in Penetanguishene in May 1880, granddaughter Delia RONDEAU in Penetanguishene in August 1882, granddaughter Delia BOURDON in Midland in August 1884, granddaughter Mildred ARBOUR in Midland in June 1888, grandson Stanley ARBOURin Midland in April 1891, granddaughter Eve ARBOUR in Midland in September 1896, granddaughter Hilda ARBOUR in Midland in June 1898, granddaughter Marie Ellen May ARBOUR in Midland in February 1899, and lastly grandson Philbert LORMAND in Midland in September 1907.

Xavier and Nathalie were obviously close to his brothers and their families, as evidenced by all the baptisms which took place. In his later years, Xavier also wrote a small poem to his beloved nieceAnnie Belle ARBOUR, who was brother Basile's youngest child. "La rose est la plus belle des fleur, Et toi tu est Roi de mon coeur, Tu est la seul, dans ce monde, Que puisse faire mon bonheur, From a friend, Xavier ARBOUR." Dated Waubaushene 9 May 1897, the writing roughly translates to: "The roseis the most beautiful of flowers, And you are the King of my heart, You are the only one in this world, Who can greatly make me happy."

In his last years, Xavier lived in Victoria Harbour -- probably with daughter Delia's family -- and still walked daily to meet the mail train.

07 June 1839 -- Born in Joliette City, Quebec, Francois-Xavier ARBOUR was the 9th of 20 children of Jean-Baptiste ARBOUR and Emelie DORVAL, our premier couple. Francois-Xavier ARBOUR I is the first in a line of several Francois-Xaviers within the ARBOUR family. In the early years in Quebec, when France was encouraging colonization and the expansion of Catholicism, the Church sent a well-respectedvicar apostolic. In 1659, the Jesuit-trained Bishop Francois-Xavier deLAVAL-MONTMORENCY arrived totake command of the missions and to found parishes. This is possibly whom our Jean-Baptiste and Emelie ARBOUR were honoring when they named their 5th son. However, they also may have been simply naming him after his godfather, as was very common at the time. This Francois-Xavier wassimply known as "Xavier." Xavier married 18-year old Natalie DESMARAISin Joliette City on 10 February 1862. At the time of the wedding, Xavier was reportedly from St-Jean-de-Matha, Quebec, a small village north of Joliette City. However, at least initially, the young couple seems to have set up home within Joliette City, where their first child was born. They did remain in Joliette County after this, but it is unknown exactly where, perhaps near the parishof St-Jean-de-Matha or near the parish of St-Alphonse-de-Rodriguez. Xavier and Natalie eventually had a large family of 13 children, although 3 of them are believed to have died in childhood. Soon, Xavier and Natalie decided to uproot their familyand move to Simcoe County, Ontario, for work in the lumber industry. They arrived in Ontario possibly around summer 1868, judging by the locations of their children's births. Little Natalie was born inFebruary 1868 in Joliette County. The next childto be born was Francois-Xavier inApril 1869 in Belle Ewart, Ontario, which is located in Simcoe County.Xavier's family probably arrived with his younger brother Basile, possibly just a few months after his sister Zoe and her family. YoungerbrotherMagloire and older brother Louis most likely did not arrive until about 1883 to 1884. Xavier and Natalie were recorded in the 1871 Census with their 5 oldest children, living in Innisfil Township in Simcoe County, on the western shore of Lake Simcoe. They seem to have settled in the town of Belle Ewart, as 4 of their children were born there. In 1871, Xavier was also recorded in the Dominion Directory, as a laborer livingin Belle Ewart. The family appears to have stayed in this community through about July 1874 before moving again. After this 6- or 7-year stint at the Sage and McGraw Mill, Xavierfound his work disappearing along with the larger trees in the forests. In 1875, the Midland Railway - so called because of its Midland terminus - was completed to Waubaushene. The family knew of theGeorgian Bay Lumber Company in northern SimcoeCounty, centered in the community of Waubaushene. Xavier and Natalie decided to move once again to seek their fortunes elsewhere. By April 1881, the family was living just outside Waubaushene in Tay Township, on the south end of the Georgian Bay. In 1887 and in 1890, Xavier was known to be a tenant farmer on Concession 11, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. In 1887, records confirm that Xavier was indeed one of the 200 employees of the Georgian Bay Lumber Company, which shipped 27 million board feet oflumber by rail and 23 million board feet by water that year. In 1894, Xavier finally became a landowner when he purchased a farm in WaubausheneonConcession 10, Lot 9. By 1901, the family owned 80 acres of Concession 9, Lot 10. On that property they had 2 houses with 6 rooms each, plus 2 barns. By the age of 62, Xavier appears to have departed the lumber business to devote his efforts tofarming. In January 1867, the couple became godparents to niece Vercheres ARBOUR in Joliette City. After moving north to St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, they became godparents to niece Virginie ARBOUR in November 1875, grandson PhilibertMedard LASALLEin May 1887, granddaughter Diana ARBOUR in April 1889, grandson MedardAlbert LASALLE in December 1892, granddaughter Cecilia Alexandrina LASALLE in February 1896, greatniece Olympe ARBOUR in December 1896, granddaughter Rose-de-Lima LASALLE in June1898, grandson Charles Medard LASALLE in November 1899, granddaughter Rose-de-Lima LASALLE in July 1901,and granddaughter Rose-de-Lima LASALLE in December 1901. Sadly, they also witnessed the funerals of two of these little girls, Virginie died inFebruary 1886 and Olympe died in August 1897. By 1871, Medard was a shoemaker living with his family in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. They were still living there in 1881,193 in 1891,194 and in 1901. In 1901, they owned two houses plus 14 outbuildingson 200 acres of the 2nd Range, Joliette Canton. Delima and Medard lived an eight-roomhouse and they rented a two-room house to son Severe and his wife Palma. Also living with Delima and Medard was their adopted son Romuald COUTU. Medard worked as a farmer.

After their wedding, Zoe and Octave only remained in Quebec for a shorttime, probably about two years. They then made the tremendous move from their hometown in Quebec all the way to the western shore of Lake Simcoe in Ontario. Although exact reasons may never be known, we can speculate that they made the move in order to reap the benefits of the growing lumber industry. Many of the large lumbercompanies in Ontario were in desperate need of hands to cut trees and operate their their mills. One of these lumber magnates was Henry W. SAGE, who opened a large mill at Belle Ewart, in Simcoe County, Ontario, in 1852, and was widely known as "King of the Trade." Word travelled to Quebec and many French-Canadians migrated for work to mills throughout Ontario. The Sage and McGraw Mill at Belle Ewart appears to have become the new GREGOIRE home. Zoeand Octave's second child was born in March 1866 in Quebec and their third child was born in May 1868 in Belle Ewart. This means the familymigrated during this time, most likely in the summer of 1866 or 1867. They were enumerated in the Census reports of April 1871, living in Innisfil Township, Ontario. 1871 was also the year Zoe and Octave became godparents to Charles GOUETT, the sonoffamily friends John GOUETT and Philomene PELLETIER. In addition, 1871 was the year that Octave was recorded in the Dominion Directory as being a laborer living in Belle Ewart. At that time, Belle Ewart was a flourishing village with a populationof600. Octave's sister Caroline GREGOIRE also appears to have moved with them to Ontario, perhaps as an aide with the children, perhaps to open new doors for her own future. Over the next several years, she became godmother to some of the family'syoungsters. At some point, Caroline married a man named Jules BOURGEOIS. Caroline was born in 1840 and died in1917. Jules died on 21 December 1910 at age 70. Both of them were buried in St Ann'sCemetery in Penetanguishene.

The GREGOIRE family remained in Belle Ewart at least through March 1872, before moving again. By this time, the stands of pine in that area had dwindled significantly. Further north in Simcoe County was the relatively young Georgian Bay Lumber Company, which had recently purchased more timber rights in northern Ontario and promised great growth. The Georgian Bay Lumber Company was headquartered in Barrie, the county seat of Simcoe, and had a central mill in Waubaushene. The Georgian Bay Lumber Company was so named because of its prominence in the Georgian Bay area. The Georgian Bay is the large, northeastern arm of Lake Huron, and is about 124 miles long and 50 miles wide. It is partially separated from Lake Huron by Manitoulin Islandand by the Bruce Peninsula. Numerous rivers, which drain the lake regions of southern Ontario, empty into the Bay. It is today linked with Lake Ontario by the Trent Canal system. Georgian Bay has a very irregular shoreline. Limestone cliffs line the western shore. Numerous bays, inlets, sounds, and islands mark the eastern shore, which cuts into the Canadian Shield. Modern vacationers frequent many of the islands, including the Thirty Thousand Islands and those of the Georgian Bay Islands National Park. Forestry has long been animportant industry in the region surrounding the Bay. The Bay was sighted in 1612 by the French explorer Etienne BRULÉ, the first viewing by a Caucasian. The Bay was laternamed for King George IV of Great Brità16 milieux défav's18 Rivitab» «tab»ain.

So the family moved once again, possibly by train, from Belle Ewart, through Barrie and Orillia, to Waubaushene. Zoe and Octave are confirmed to be in Waubaushene in February 1874, when their daughter was born. Inthe 1881 Census, they were recordedin Tay Township, Ontario. Octave was no doubt among the vast majority of residents who were millworkers earning between $25 and $35 per month. Waubaushene eventually became thelargest of the mill villages and also the most attractive. The charmingand neat little community held about 500 inhabitants, including about36 families. Each company-built house was laid out nicely and surrounded by a white picket fence. Temperance was the rule of the day in the strongly Protestant town. Our French-Canadian ancestors must have felt alittle out of place.

Between 1880 and 1883, the family moved again, this time just the relatively short distance to Port Severn, just to the north-northeast of Waubaushene. Their reason for this is unclear. Perhaps they felt more comfortable living among other French-Canadians instead of among the mostly-British Protestants in Waubaushene. By the 1930s, nearly all of the 200 or more residents of Port Severn were French-Canadian. Perhaps their sons were working in the Port Severn Mill or Octave was offered a better job there.

Zoe and Octave had nine children in all, although three of them were lost early in life. Zoe then died sometime after the 1881 Census, perhapsas the result of the birth of her last child in June 1883. It is unknown for sure when or where she died or where she was laid to rest, but she definitely passed away prior to September 1887, when Octave married again.

Major world changes took place during Magloire and Leocadie's life together. In the year following their marriage, the British North America Act united all British colonies in North America and created the Dominion of Canada. The British intended one country and one culture but did allow the Quebecois to retain their Catholic religion and their French language.

In 1871, Magloire was a farmer living in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, alongwith many of his brothers. Magloire and Leocadie then appeared in the 1881 Census with eight of their children still living in Ste-Emelie. During the 1870s, the entire world suffered an economic depression, touching even the smallest villages, including Ste-Emelie. Word then came from brother Xavier in Ontario that 1881 was agreat year in the lumber industry. Magloire and Leocadie thought it was their time to join the newfound prosperity in the west. The Waubaushene Mill had recently been rebuilt following its August 1881 fire. The main building of the new facility was 126'x70' with an attached engine room housing two 250-horsepower steam engines. The bottle-shapedburner, 28' in diameter and 125' high, incinerated sawdust and other refuse. The most modern saws and equipment kept the mill running.

Magloire and Leocadie then uprooted their family and made the journey from Quebec to Ontario, settling in the Waubaushene area, following in the footsteps of Magloire's brothers Xavier and Basile andhis sister Zoe. Their exact date of migration maynever be known but approximates spring 1883. We know that they moved between the time of daughter Diana's birth in October 1882 and Magloire's presence at his nephew Joseph GREGOIRE's baptism in Penetanguishene in June 1883. Their ownson William wasborn in Waubaushene in June 1884. The year 1884 was also the first year of publication of Eaton's Catalog, which brought much magic to the lives of the rural folk. They spent countless hours leafing through each year's edition, marveling at the endless items available. All they had to do was fill out and mail a form and whatever they ordered would be waiting for them at the nearest railroad station a week or so later -- provided, of course, that they had the moneyto pay for it.

Before buying a farm, Magloire and Leocadie possibly moved into one of the 15 new homes built in Waubaushene to accommodate the population surge. During the time of Magloire and Leocadie's migration,Waubaushene grew to over 1800 souls. In 1887, Magloire was farming part of Concession13, Lot 12, between Waubaushene and Port Severn. In 1890, he owned hisfarm in Waubaushene on Concession 11, Lot 10. The 1891 Census also shows them in Waubaushene. By 1901, the family lived in a four-room houseonConcession 10, Lot 10, in the town of Waubaushene. Magloire must haverisen to a position of some stature at the mill as he made $850 that year.

Shortly after this Census, Magloire and Leocadie seem to have moved to Victoria Harbour, where they bought themselves a house on William Street West. According to his obituary, Magloire then found employment with the Victoria Harbour Lumber Company, which was run by John WALDIE until1907 and later his son Fred WALDIE ran it until his death in 1927.

All they had to do was fill out and mail a form and whatever they ordered would be waiting for them at the nearest railroad station a week or so later -- provided, of course, that they had the money to pay for it. Before buying a farm, Magloire and Leocadie possibly moved intoone of the 15 new homes builtin Waubaushene to accommodate the population surge. During the time of Magloire and Leocadie's migration, Waubaushene grew to over 1800 souls. In 1887, Magloire was farming part of Concession 13, Lot 12, between Waubaushene and Port Severn. In 1890, he ownedhis farm in Waubaushene on Concession 11, Lot 10. The 1891 Census also shows them in Waubaushene. By 1901, the family lived in a 4-room house on Concession 10, Lot 10, in the town of Waubaushene. Magloire musthave risen to a position ofsome statureat the mill as he made $850 that year. Shortly after this Census, Magloire and Leocadie seem to have moved to Victoria Harbour, where they bought themselves ahouse on William Street West. According to his obituary, Magloire then foundemploymentwiththe Victoria Harbour Lumber Company, which was run by John WALDIE until 1907 and later his son Fred WALDIEran it until his death in 1927. Magloire died of sudden heart failure on 03 February 1924 in Victoria Harbour. When Leocadie died in VictoriaHarbour on 02 April 1926, shewas buried there next to Magloire in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery. All in all, Magloire and Leocadie wereparents to 14 children, grandparents to a whopping 116, and great-grandparents to 281! - we stopped countingafterthat.

While still a bachelor, Basile moved to Ontario, probably in about the summer of 1868, with his older brother Xavierand Xavier's family -- shortly after sister Zoe and her family. Basile, too, came for the economicprosperity promised by the lumber trade. They all seem to have gravitated toward Belle Ewart, Ontario, located in Innisfil Township, Simcoe County, on the western shore of Lake Simcoe. The first mention of Basilein Ontario is at the baptism of hisgodson, nephew Xavier ARBOUR, in April 1869 at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church in Barrie,also located in Simcoe County.

By March 1876, this young ARBOUR family of five appears to have ridden the train to theend and settled in Port Severn, wherefour more children were added, bringing the total to seven, all of whom were baptised Catholic. The family was recorded in Tay Township in the Census reports of 1881, of 1891, and of 1901. In 1878, there were only 100Catholics in Port Severn.DidtheBasile and Jane family count themselves among this number? Or did they align themselves with the Protestants? A family story does show that at one point, the family did stop attending the CatholicChurch.

One day Basile came home to find Jane very upset. Seems the local priest had visited and found Jane reading to her children from the Bible. Apparently, this did not please the priest. He told her to give him the Bible, chastized her for reading it,and threw it outside. Basile, who was quite angry when he heard her story, then went to see the priest and have a chat. The family never went to the Catholic Church again.

In 1887 and in 1890, Basile was confirmed to be a tenant farmer on Concession 12, Lot 18, in Port Severn. Also living on this lot were his brother-in-law Octave GREGOIRE and Octave's son-in-law HenryGOYET. While working as a farmer, Basile was alsoemployed at the Port Severn Lumber Mill. On 16 August 1896, the Port Severn Mill was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, taking with it thecompany's community store as well as other properties. The small town was devastated.The livelihoodsof 100 families, including Basile and Jane's and that of other French-Canadian settlers, had depended upon the mill. The mill was never rebuilt and this family, like many others, moved away.

Basile and Jane did not travel far when they moved near family in Waubaushene. On 17 February 1897, they bought their house on Pine Street from Dr. J. F. HANLEY for $400. On 22 March 1897, they took out a mortgagefor $200 from the Ontario PermanentBuilding and Loan Association: twoshares of $100 each, interest due $2.40 per month for 154 months. Although Jane signed her name to the contract, Basile was apparently illiterate as his signature was represented by an "x."

The 1901 Census shows Basile and his family as owning this five-room house on ¼ acre of Concession 10, Lot 10. Basile earned $200 that year atthe mill in Waubaushene. On 9 May 1910, the loan on thehouse was discharged, having been considered paid ?u Canadille recsaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab»in full. The house remained in the family for many years until being sold by Basile's granddaughters, the offspring of youngest daughterAnnie Belle.However, just prior to the house being sold, great-granddaughter Carolyn (SIMMONS) HUDSON rescued aprecious heirloom. Basile had handcrafted a corner cupboard made of ash for Jane. Still in beautiful condition, Carolyn found the piece in the summer kitchen and now it resides in her home in rural Ontario.

The 1911 Census shows Basile as a widower still living in Waubaushene. He continued to work at the saw mill and appeared to enjoy good health.Living with Basile this year were son Baptiste and family, including wife Annie and daughters Janie and Bessie. While Baptiste and Annie had 2 of their children living with them, the other three, Bernice, 12, Devina, 4, and John, 1, lived with Aunt Emily and Uncle Herbert, who had only daughter Crystal, 6. Perhaps they could not afford tokeep all of their own children and perhaps Emily was unable to have more even though she desired more. The true reasons behind this may never be known. Alsoliving with Basile was his grandson Howard. It is expected that we should see Howardwas living with his grandfather, as his mother died when he was born and he was raised by Jane and Basile, assisted by his Aunt Annie Belle.

Jean-Baptiste(Rosalie's husband) and his four brothers, Napoleon, Arvin, and Jules, were apparently quite the hell-raisers. In the spring time, when they came out of the woods, their carousings couldturn any jointupside down for they were known tobe very thirsty drinkers.

Perhaps Jean-Baptiste sobered up after marrying, as he and Rosalie eventually had 13 children, seven daughters and six sons, for whom he had to provide. They also served as godparents to niece Rose-Anne ARBOUR in September 1881 and niece Diana ARBOUR in October 1882, both of whom were baptised at Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie. In 1881, the family lived in St Come, Quebec, also in Joliette County. By 1891, they lived in the village of Joliette. They were still there in 1901, living at 8 deLanaudiereStreet, where they owned 130 acres and a 10-room house. Jean-Baptiste was a journeyman and a farmer. By 1911, they seem to have retired, as they no longer lived on their farm but in an apartment house at 10 St Marc St. Jean-Baptiste worked as a journeyman, earning only $70 that year.

In 1883, Emery purchased land from Thomas B. CLARK in the town of Spencer, MA. Book 1148, Page 89.In 1872 or 1873, Emery left the protection of his family's nest to make the big journey to the UnitedStates of America. He settled in the Stateof Massachusetts and became a naturalized US Citizen there in 1881. After their wedding, Emery and Olivine set up their home in Spencer, Massachusetts, located in Worcester County. In 1887, they rented a room in a house on Adams Street. In 1900, they livedon Adams Street. In both 1920 and in 1930, they owned their home at 24Adams Street. Emery and Olivine had four children, but one of their little girls died while still a child. As a young father, Emery did "channeling" at a shoe factory. Later, hewas the proprietor of his own grocery store.

In the 1894 City Directory for Hudson, MA, there is a listing for a Mr.and Mrs. Armual ARBOUR. Is this Emery and wife Olivine? They lived on Loring Street. His occupation was as a shoemaker; hers, as a dressmaker. They seem to be the most likely couple to fit this description.

In 1902, Emery was President of the Spencer, MA, chapter of the St Jean-Baptiste Society, which was established in 1875.

Emery Arbour, 78, a former town official and business man, died yesterday morning at his home, 24 Adams Street. He was a former selectman, chief of police, and at one time a member of the board of assessors. He conducted a grocery store for many years but has lived a retired life thepast few years. He was president of the St Jean-Baptiste Society for several years and took an active part in its affairs. He leaves a son, John, of Spencer, and two daughters, Mrs. Albina Hebert ofSpencer and Mrs. Eva Girouard of Marlboro. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock in St Mary's Church with a high Mass of requiem. The burial will be in Holy Rosary and St Mary's Cemetery in charge of J. Henry Morin, funeral director.

FUNERAL OF EMERY ARBOUR LAST SATURDAY MORNING
The funeral of Emery Arbour, business man and former town official was held on Saturday morning at 9 o'clock with a high Mass of requiem at StMary's Church, celebrated by Rev. Joseph Lussier, curate. Mr. Arbour at one time conducted a grocery storeand was also a former chief of police, as well as past president of the St Jean-Baptiste Society. The bearers were Henry Remillard, Adelard Jette, Damase Racine, Charles Pelter, Almos David, and Euchariste Gendron. The funeral service was attendedby business men, town officials, and former members of the St Jean-Baptiste Society, now being disbanded. Delegations from Court Spencer, F of A, and the Social Circle Society. Burial was in Holy Rosary and St Mary's Cemetery in charge of J. Henry Morin, funeral director. Mr. Arbouris survived by his son, John, of this town; and two daughters, Mrs. Albina Hebert of Spencer and Mrs. Eva Girard of Marlboro.

Despite having returned to Quebec some years earlier, Henry must have continued to work in the US on occasion. In 1913, he was found living with his brother Emery in Marlboro, MA, where he worked as a clerk.

As a young man, George travelled to Ontario and remained there for as much as couple of years. In June 1882, he was present at the wedding of his cousin Vercheres GREGOIRE in Port Severn, Ontario.He then apprarently returned to Quebec.

Shortly after their wedding, George and Malvina travelled to Ontariofor a time. In June 1884, they were in Midland to act as godparents toGeorge's cousin William ARBOUR. In 1887, a George ARBOURwas farming part of Concession 13, Lot 12,betweenWaubaushene and Port Severn. Perhapshe is our George, as there are not known to be any others in that areaat this time.

By the middle of 1887, the young couple had returned to Quebec and seem to have stayed there for quite a while this time. They became godparents to nephew Philibert RIVET in June 1887 at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.By April 1891, George and Malvina were known to be living in Quebec during the Census. That year George was reportedly a farmer living in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. After this, George and Malvina again became godparents: to his cousin's daughter Anna ARBOUR in September 1891 and to hiscousin's son Francois COUTU in January 1901, both in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.

In April 1901, during the Census of that year, George and Malvina still lived in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. They owned a four-room house plus three outbuildings on one-acre of the 2nd Range, JolietteCanton. Georgewas reported to be a journeyman whoearned $300 that year. George and Malvina are thought to have had no children of their own. No births have been connected to them. However, both in the 1891 Census and in the 1901 Census, they were recorded with niece Domitille TALBOT, the daughterof Malvina's sister Marie-Louise PARENT and her husband Narcisse TALBOT. They seem to have adopted the girl.

The story of the girl's parents is somewhat unclear. Marie-Louise and Narcisse appear to have married in about 1883. Their daughter Marie TALBOT was born on 16 October 1884 in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie and baptised there on 18 October 1884. Marie'sstillborn twin was also born there on the 16th; this baby was buried on 20 October 1884. One year later, on27 October 1885, Domitille TALBOT was bornalthough her baptismal record has not yet been located. Young Marie TALBOT must havenot been a healthy child as she died in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie just three years later on 19 December 1883 and was buried there on 23 December 1887. Perhaps it was shortly after this that Marie-Louise and/or Narcisse passed away - although they were not buried inSt-Emelie-de-l'Energie - and Domitille came under the care of her Uncle George and Aunt Malvina. The complete explanation for their situation may never be known.

In later years, George and Malvina again returned to the baptismal font at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie to hold more godchildren: George's cousinJeanne Domitille MORIN in May 1904 and George's cousin Georges Gerald LASALLE in August 1912.

After their wedding, the bright young couple of William and Pamela settled in Waubaushene, but a year later tragedy came to their home. Dear Pamela never regained her health after the birth of their daughter MariaAva in early 1892. Pamela died on 24 June 1892 and was buried in St John's Cemetery in Waubaushene. Their baby girl followed shortly thereafter.
When William married second wife Zephyrine, they returned home to Waubaushene, where they had a son, Norman. Then came young Zephyrine's turn to depart this world. She died on 24 June 1899 and was buried in St Margaret's Cemetery in Midland.Our courageous William - weakened in heart but not in spirit - decided to take refuge with his parents for a time to collect himself.
Although uncommon grief seemed to beset William's marriages, he eventually decided to try once again. William married a third time to a woman named Florence Theresa GUERTIN in 1903. Florence was married earlier toa Mr. LeGARRY and had a son, Leo LeGARRY, whom she brought to live in William's house. Leo later served with the Merchant Marines.
At some point before November 1917, William and Florence moved their blended family to Espanola, Ontario, on the north side of the Georgian Bay, in the Sudbury District. Here, William continued to work as a lumberjack. William and Florence eventually had six children together, three daughters and three sons.
A family story tells that William was once involved in a fight in a lumber camp. A man stole his gold watch. Later in a bar, William saw the man place the watch on the table as his bet in a card game. The story says that during the ensuing fight, William killed a man, perhaps even the thief himself.
William's suspected death date of 1948 has been difficult to confirm. He supposedly lived in Windsor, ON, at the time but there seems to be noobituary in the Windsor paper. It has also been difficult to ascertainhis death record from the ProvinceofOntario.
Another note of interest: William is the grandfather to the famous hockey player and coach, Al ARBOUR, of the New York Islanders.

Elide was about 14-years old when she moved with her family from Quebec to Ontario. As a young woman, Elide became godmother to three children in Midland: cousin Oscar ARBOUR in July 1888, nephew Omer RIVET in June 1890, and cousin's daughter Ethel BOURDON in August 1891. She alsowitnessed her brother William's marriage in April 1891 in Waubaushene.

After their wedding, Elide and Bert settled in Waubaushene, where they had five children, three daughters and two sons. They also served asgodparents to nephew Louis ARBOUR in January 1907 and toniece Emilie ARBOUR in March 1907, both inMidland.In 1901, the young family with twosmall children was living in a four-room house on ¼ acre of Concession10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. Joseph Alfred Arbour was the 7th of 13 children born to Louis Arbour and Sidonie Ethier on 20 June 1872, in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie in Joliette County. He was baptised at Ste-Emelie the next day as "Paul Alfred." His Godparents were Olivier Bonnin and Marie Louise Robillard (of unknown connection). Throughout his life he was known as "Fred." In 1884, when Fred was about 11, the family made a moveto join other Arbour families in Waubaushene, Ontario. As a young man, in August 1896, Fred stoodas witness to the marriage of his brother Joseph-Louis when he married Edouina Massicotte. Fred stayed single until the age of 26. On 22 August1898, Fred married 21-year old Marie-Delia Thanasse, the daughter of Louis Thanasse and Agnes DesrochesinSt Croix Church, Lafontaine, Ontario. Delia was born 28 March 1877, in Lafontaine, and baptised two days later in St Croix Church in Lafontaine. She appeared on the 1891 Tiny Township census at the age of 12 as being the 5th of 8 children. Alsoappearing were her siblings, Joseph 18, Honore 16, Thomas l4, Eda 9, Roselba 7, Hectorine 4, and Malvina 2. After the wedding the young couple made their home in Waubaushene, but by April 1901 had moved toa house on 4th Street in Midland. Narcisse later took his son Isadore out of school at a young age so he could work in the shop, increasing production and affording his siblings the opportunity for aneducation. Mary Jane was just 44-years old when she died at their home in Victoria Harbour. Son Isadoreforever remembered his mother with only love and admiration. However, Narcisse was not always known to be such a faithful family man, although dear Mary Jane never knew this. Sometime after Mary Jane's death, Narcisse remarried to a woman named Philomene LORMAND, who was a sister toDelia, who married Narcisse's brother Thomas. She was also a sister toJohn, who married Narcisse's cousin Delia. Narcisse and Philomene thenhad a daughter of their own, who was born in 1925.

Joseph was about seven-years old when he moved with his family from Quebec to Ontario. On 16 June 1891, 14-year old Joseph, along with brotherEdmund, was confirmed into the Catholic Church by Reverend John McABLE, Archbishop of Toronto, while at StMargaret's in Midland. After theirwedding, Joseph and Mary settled in Waubaushene, where they went on toraise nine children, three daughters and six sons. Did they all go together or did one follow another? What is known is that after the lumber mills began closing in the 1920s and 1930s, work became scarce. The United States appeared to bethe promised land of opportunity for many from rural Ontario.

WORKER FALLS FOUR STOREYS TO DEATH IN MILL ACCIDENT
Midland, 13 June -- Hurtling four storeys to the basement of the Copeland Flour Mill, when a conveyor on which he was riding from one floor toanother, broke, Mr. Joseph Arbour, aged 56 years, of 2732nd Street, received injuries which terminated inhis death a few hours later. The fatal accident occurred about 3 o'clock on Friday afternoon. Mr. Arbour, who had been in the employ of the Copeland Mill for a number of years, was riding from a lower floor to one above on what is known as a "FraserConveryor," so named from its inventor. It consistes of an endless belt onto which platforms are stationed at intervals. The conveyor travelsvertically from the basement to the upper floor, and the platforms areso arranged that the workmen maystep onto one and travel either to an upper floor or a lower floor with the converyor.
Belt Snapped -- For some unknown reason, the conveyor belt snapped in two as Mr. Arbour was travelling on it, allowing him to hurtle from the third floor to the basement. Fellow workmen rushed to hisassistance. Dr. T J. Johnston was called and an ambulance summoned to bear the unfortunate man to the hospital. His injuries were extensive and included a fracture of the pelvis, four fractured ribs,a hemorrhage of the brain, and a hemorrhage of the abdomen.
Remained Conscious -- In spite of his serious condition, he was conscious when admitted to the hospital and was able to answer the questions of the nurses as his injuries were being attended. He rapidly lost strength, however, in spite of all that surgical and nursing skill could do.He died at 7:30 pm, four and a half hours after being admitted to the hospital.

His death record actually reports his birth date as 31 Dec 1876.

Edmund was about six-years old when he moved with his family from Quebec to Ontario. In 1901, Edmund lived with his widowed father and his twoyounger brothers in Waubaushene. He earned $350 that year at the mill.After their wedding, Edmundand Clemence settled into Victoria Harbour,where they had nine children. They also became godparents to nephew Lawrence ARBOUR in Midland in February 1907 and to grandson Allen ARBOUR in Toronto in July 1935. Edmund was a farmer and also worked as a lumberman in the bush during the winters when the ground was frozen. Mostly,he worked in the area of the Blind River on the northern shore of the Georgian Bay, just west of Manitoulin Island. One year, Edmund was recruited to work on the upper peninsula of the State of Michigan after a very bad forest fire. Many loggers from Ontario went to cut down as manyof the burnt trees as they could so as to foster new growth. The men called it the Wanapitei Slash. Edmund's truecalling, however, lay in hiswoodworking. Although he had no formal education and could not read - not even a ruler - Edmund created many beautiful artifacts. While living in Victoria Harbour, he made Clemence a table lamp from a block of maple, carved only with a penknife.The lamp was perfectly square and straight and the decorative sphere it held was perfectly round, as confirmed by his sons who measured it with calipers. A more well-known tribute to Edmund's carpentry abilities is the Martyrs' Shrine in Midland. The family says that he helped to build the steeple on the Shrine in 1926. Edmund and Clemence moved their family from Victoria Harbour to Torontoprior to 1930, probably in about 1928. In the big city, Edmund worked for a sheet metal company, wherehe hand-made sections of duct work thatwere very intricate, requiring painstaking effort on their detail. Theonly thing Edmund ever learned to write was his name because this company made him sign for his paycheck. Clemence was the one who taughthim to write his name. The family lived at 66 River Street in a semi-detached house until they moved to 122 Ferrier Avenue in the early 1950s. Alexandre was only about three-years old when he moved with his family from Quebec to Ontario. Alexandre was with them in the 1891 Census in Tay Township, Ontario. In 1901, he lived with his widowed father and twoof his brothers in Waubaushene.
Alexander seems to have been an unhealthy young man. At the time of hisdeath in Midland on 9 September 1923, he was reported to be an invalid.

Thomas was probably only an infant when his family moved from Quebec toOntario. In April 1901, he lived there with his widowed father and twoolder brothers. In July 1903, he witnessed his brother Edmund's wedding in Victoria Harbour. Aftertheir wedding, Thomas and Delia settled in Victoria Harbour, where their ten children were born, five daughters and five sons. The couple also became godparents to nephew Edgar ARBOUR in Midland in July 1908.

Family thought that Thomas was still alive in 1953. He definitely appears on the voter registration lists through 1949; however, he does not appear on them in 1957, so this agrees with a 1953-1957 death time frame.

Perhaps Alexandrine and Honore knew each other as children, as his father Olivier seems to have played a role in the ARBOUR family with his attendance at baptisms and burials.
Alexandrine and Honore may have initially settled in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, but by April 1891, they were found living in Joliette City. The young family was still there in 1901 and seem to have stayed through 1905. In 1901, they owned a seven-roomhouse plus two storehouses and threebarns or outbuildings on 128 acres of the 1st Range, Joliette Canton. Honore reported his occupation in both 1891and in 1901 as "voitureur," or carriage driver, even though they obviously farmed some land. He wasalso reported in their children's baptismal records to be a mechanic and a carpenter.
During these years, however, the couple did return to St-Emelie-de-l'Energie to have each of their children baptised. Alexandrine and Honore eventually had 14 children, six daughters and eight sons, all but the last one of whom were born in Joliette County. They also became godparents to two family youngsters: Alexandrine's sister Regina ARBOUR in September 1887 and nephew Alfred COUTU in March 1890, both baptised at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.
At this point, something compelled this family to move far from their roots. Perhaps they were following Honore's brother Joseph BLAIS and hiswife Prescilla GERVAIS, who left Canada for the United States of America sometime after 1897. In any event, in 1906, Alexandrine and Honore decided to migrate to the US and settled in the State of Massachusetts. They found a home in the Aldenville-Chicopeearea and became members of the St-Rose-de-Lima parish. In 1920, they lived at 778 Grattan Street in Chicopee. Although they had been in the US almost 14 years, apparently the parents could not yet speak English. Honore was finally reported as being a farmer and virtually all of their children worked outside the home. Their married daughter Dalvine and her husband also lived with them.

Virginie and Basile established their home in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, where they had 15 children, four daughters and 11 sons. At least seven of their children did not survive childhood, six went on to marry, one became a priest, and the fateof one of them is unknown. They also becamegodparents to four family youngsters: Virginie's brother Martial ARBOUR in January 1889, nephew Alfred Henri Eleoni BLAIS in December 1890, nephew Leo ARBOUR in April 1910, and niece Virginie AlineARBOUR in March1913, all baptised at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie.
Although his father was a farmer from St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, the younger Basile worked there as a dairyman. In 1901, the young family owned afour-room house plus three outbuildings on ¾ acre of the 2nd Range, Joliette Canton.
Virginie and Basile passed away in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie just five months apart. According to the church record of her burial, Virginie was born on 28 Nov 1867.

23 May 1880 -- Born in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, Quebec, Moise-Camille ARBOUR was the 13th of 17 children of farmer Pierre ARBOUR and farmwife Caroline PERREAULT. As a young man, Camille is believed to have gone tolive in the United States for a while and to have stayed with sister Diana while he was there. In 1900, Camille was found living with Diana and her husband, Wilfred DELETOILE, in the town of Westwood, Massachusetts, located in Norfolk County, where he worked as a laborer on their farm. He reportedly immigrated to the US in 1899, but for some unknown reason, Camille later returned toCanada to marry and spend the rest of his life. In Ste-Emelie on 06 October 1903, Camille wed 19-year old Exerina CHAMPAGNE. The young couple thensettled in Ste-Emelie, where they raised their family of 4 daughters and 4 sons, only 3 of whom lived pastthe age of 21. Throughout his life, Camille was known to work as a farmer, as an animal trader, and as a butcher. In 1940, he was selected asChurchwarden of Ste-Emelie, a position his father had held in 1891. Exerina was just 52 when she died in Ste-Emelie on 17 August 1936. Camille was 69 when he passed away there on 07 November 1949. Both of them wereburied in the Ste-Emelie cemetery.Camille and Exerina are responsible for 3 granddaughters.

There Martial married Rose, who was born in Massachusetts in Oct 1893. Martial and Rose had ason, Roland. Shortly after Roland's birth, Martial returned to his birthplace to serve as witness at his mother's funeral at Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie in November 1918. In 1920, Martial and his young family lived at 511 Gratton Street in Chicopee, Massachusetts, located in Hampden County. Martial lived in Palmer, Massachusetts,also located in Hampden County, when he died.

According to his WWI Draft Registration, Martial was tall with a mediumbuild. He had brown eyes and black hair. His information was also notably more complete and correct than most of the ARBOUR men. Perhaps Martial was a tad more educated and informed than they were.

Note: Joseph and Alphonsine had nine children, three daughters and six sons, three of whom died in infancy. They also became godparents to his cousin Regina HOULE, who was baptised in May 1880 at St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. While living in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie, Joseph toiled as a farmer. As his parents' only child, he became the caretaker of their property, as well as his own. In 1886, Joseph received a Land Grant from the Canadian Government for some property in Joliette County, but the details are unknown. One day while working, Joseph decided that there mustbe a more successful life elsewhere. So following in the many footsteps of ARBOURs before him, he travelled across the country and became a lumberer in Ontario. In the winter of 1898-1899, Joseph went to NorthernOntario to work and found a lovely spot on Lake Nipissing. He then saved his money in order to bring his family and his parents there. So in the spring of 1899, the whole group arrived on the train in Verner, Ontario;they then continued on to Lavigne, Ontario. In 1901, the family was indeed found living in MacPherson Township, Ontario, which is where the community of Lavigne is located within Nipissing District. That year, Joseph and his three eldest surviving sons worked their farm.

Melina and Thomas had a daughter while living in Waubaushene. The youngfamily then returned to their birthplace in about 1883. Their next sixchildren - all sons - were born in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie through 1892. Melina and Thomas also became godparents to her cousin Marie-Jeanne ARBOUR in March 1888 in St-Emelie-de-l'Energie. The couple was later recorded living there with four sons during the1891 Census, when Thomas was reported to be a farmer. In 1893 or 1894, the family then moved backtoWaubaushene, where their eighth child - another son - was born. Whilein Simcoe County, they also became godparents to nephew Ovila BOURDON in Midland in December 1894. It is unknown for sure what happened to them after this time. They are believedto have moved to Toronto, possibly around 1895

Little Fred moved with his family to Ontario when he was about three-years old. As a young man, Fred stood witness at the weddings of two of his sisters. He was in Waubaushene in January 1882 when Minnie was married. He was also there when Natalie was married in October 1883. After their wedding, the young millhand Fred and his wife settled in Penetanguishene, where they had 11 children with onlyone son among them. Quite obviously, their large family contributed to the growth ofthe city of Penetanguishene, which grew to over 2000 residents by 1895. They also served as godparents to six family youngsters: nephew Henry BOURDON in June 1887 in Midland, nephew Albert ARBOUR in December 1894 in Midland, nephew Bert ARBOUR in December 1894 in Midland, niece Veronica ARBOUR in February 1907 inMidland, granddaughter Lucie BEAUSOLEIL (Fred only) in June 1908 in Penetanguishene, and granddaughter Stella BEAUSOLEIL in July 1909 in Penetanguishene. In 1889, just acouple of years after their wedding, Fred and Mary saw the first three streetlights in Penetanguishene. By 1910, electric services were available to virtually the entire community. The family was reported as living in Penetanguishene both in1891 and in 1901. In 1901, Fred earned $350 as one of the 60 millhands at the McGibbon Lumber Mill. They probably lived in Penetanguishene forthe rest of their years.

07 April 1869 -- Francois-Xavier ARBOUR was the 5th child of 13 and namesake of Francois-Xavier ARBOUR and his wife Natalie DESMARAIS. He was born in Belle Ewart, Ontario, during his family's 7-year stop there on their way from Joliette County, QC,to Waubaushene, ON. On 19 September 1892, Xavier married 20-year old Marie-Louise GRENIER at St Croix Catholic Church in LaFontaine, ON. Louise's family had been among the first people befriended by Xavier's parents upon their arrivalin Ontario. Louise's parents served as godparents to Xavier's younger sister Rosanna in July 1871. After their wedding, Xavier and Louise settled in Waubaushene, where their first few children were born. By 1901, they had moved to the town ofMidland. In the 1901Census, the young couple lived on Sturgeon Bay Roadin Midland with 3 of their children in a one-story, 5-room house on a regular city lot. Xavier earned $300 that year at the mill. Eleven children were eventually born into Xavier and Louise's home,6daughters and 5 sons. On 9 June 1887, 12-year old Joseph, along with several of his cousins, was confirmed into the Catholic Church by Reverend John Joseph LYNCH, Archbishop of Toronto, while in Waubaushene. He then witnessed the marriage of his brother Xavierin September 1892 in LaFontaine. In April 1893, he became godfather to nephew Omer BOURDON in Midland. As young adults but before their own marriage, Joseph and Vitaline FOURNIER stood witness at his younger brother Peter's wedding in August1897 at St Margaret's in Midland. After their wedding, Joseph and Vitaline settled in Waubaushene, where their first four children were born. In April 1901, the family lived in a house on his father's property, just outside Waubaushene. Theyhad their first two daughters by the time the census takercame around and their third daughter was born just a few days later. Joseph earned $384 that year at the mill. In 1903, they moved to Victoria Harbour, where they appear to have remained for the rest of their lives. Joseph and Vitaline eventually had 10 children in all, seven daughters and three sons. Throughout his life, Joseph worked as a farmer, sawyer, and general laborer.

On 16 June 1891, 14-year old Peter, along with his brother Baptiste,was confirmed into the Catholic Church by Reverend John McABLE, Archbishop of Toronto, while at St Margaret's in Midland. Peterand Philomene's lives are a tragic love story. Initially, Peter's younger brother Baptiste made a play for Philomene, but when Peter saw her, he as much as told his brother to move over, that she wasthe one for him. There were no hard feelings as Peter and Baptiste were the best of friends. Philomene was apparently quite the charmer. She loved to laugh and was full of life. Peter, a rough carpenter and general laborer, and Philomene hadfive children. In 1901, the young couple and their first daughter lived with Philomene's parents and eightof her siblings in a five-room house in Tay Township - the quintessential crowded house! Peter earned $330 that year at the mill. Shortly thereafter, they seem to have moved into their own house in Victoria Harbour, where their four other childrenwere born. Philomene then contracted a kidney ailment known as Bright's Disease or nephritis. She died at the age of 32, leaving her husband with five children, ages 2 to 11. Hilda, the oldest of them at age 11, helped to raise the family. AlthoughPhilomene was reportedly buried inSt Mary's Cemetery in Victoria Harbour, the cemetery transcriptions for St Mary's make no mention of her. Further, theburial register at St Margaret's in Midland says that she died on 25 May 1910 in Victoria Harbourand was buried in St Margaret's Cemetery. However, the cemetery transcriptions for St Margaret's alsomake no mention of Philomene. The Archives of Ontario does confirm her death in Victoria Harbour on 25 May 1910. In fact, the mystery of Philomene's final resting-place has persisted for many years. Bert, son of Peter and Philomene, is remembered by his widow Jessie as searching for his mother's gravesite for all of hisadult life, to noavail. Apparently, it was such a sad and painful subjectfor Peter that he never spoke of it to his children, who were all so young at the time of their mother's death. In the winter following her death, Peter did not work near their home inVictoria Harbour.Instead,he walked from there across the ice towork on the building of the grain elevators. He left on Monday mornings and came home on Friday nights. In between, anything the children needed was put on a "chit" at the company store and paid for when Peter returned. After Philomene's death,thechildren were taken under the wing of their Auntie Dellie, wife oftheir Uncle Baptiste. She gave the two boys, Lawrence and Herbie, odd jobs to do, like stacking wood, and in turn gave the family freshly-baked pies. A cleaning lady came in once a weekto do the heavy work. The family remained faithful and loyal to each other all their lives, each helping the other. The girls Hilda and Leda eventually found work in Toronto and were later followed by their brother Lawrence. At the age of 13, son Herbie, along with his little sister Delima, were moved to Hamilton, Ontario, by their father and into a boarding house. Peter then worked in construction down in Niagara Falls, again returning only on weekends. Peter was once asked about thehouse in Victoria Harbour, from which he had simply walked away. He said that when Philomene died, the house had no meaning. Peter did get to see his children grow and begin families of their own. In his later years, he lived with his eldest daughterHildaand her family in Hamilton. When Peter died, he was buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, located in nearby Burlington, Ontario, in anunmarked grave, according to his wishes.

They also became sort of surrogate parents to their five young nieces and nephews, children of Baptiste's closest brother Peter. Peter's wife died when the eldest of the children was 11-years old and their Auntie Dellie took them under her wing. Furthermore, Baptiste and Dellie also appear to have taken in a family youngster by the name of Gloria.Itis unclear how she fits into the family tree. Perhaps she was the result of a teenage indiscretion within the family. Auntie Dellie seems to have been a family favorite. In addition to being a terrific baker, shewas also very artistic and crafty. Dellie won first prize at the Toronto Exhibition in about 1926 for a dollhouse she built and decorated herself. The little house was then proudly displayed in her parlor, complete with the big first-prize ribbon. It is unknown when or where Dellie died. However, she seems to have passed away before Baptiste moved in with his niece Hilda LeNESTOUR, with whom he lived during his later years in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 1901, Charles still lived with his parents in Waubaushene. The teenager earned $154 that year at the mill. In January 1903, he witnessedhis brother Baptiste's wedding in Victoria Harbour. In October 1906, he witnessed his sister Delia's wedding, also in Victoria Harbour.

Charles and Lina had a son, Edward, who was born in Victoria Harbour. They also seem to have taken in a son of the family, who became knownas Uncle Fred. Later, the family moved to northern Ontario and settledin the North Bay area in 1929.

Charles lived at 363 Aberdeen Avenue at the time of his death in 1966. He died in a local hospital as the result of a heart attack following a lengthy illness. While he actually attended the Pro-Cathedral of the Assomption Church, he was buried in St Mary's Cemetery in North Bay. Lina predeceased him at some point.

After their wedding, Delia and John set up house in Victoria Harbour and appear to have remained there for the rest of their lives. Beginning just one month after the birth of their eldest child, they became godparents to three family youngstersin Midland: niece Adeline ARBOUR in October 1907, nephew Stanley BOURDON in February 1908, and niece Flora ARBOURin July 1908.Delia and John alsohad nine children of their own. Delia tragically died in St Andrew's Hospital in Midland after childbirth in 1924. A horrible family story alludes to the fact that John was not a kind man and frequently beat his wife. Onthis particular occasion, Johnreportedly kicked Delia, causing severe injuries and a premature birth. This tale is confirmed with the information received in her death registration certificate. While Delia's life was eventually ended by a bloodclot, 12 days earlier she sufferedileus, which is severe abdominal trauma. There is no doubt that this was caused by John kicking her. On 03 Aug 1909, Vercheres would have the opportunity to have her own large family when she wed the widower Telesphore THOUIN. She instantly became step-mother to his 8 surviving children, who were between the ages of 5 and 17. Emelie was only about 18-years old when she married Joseph JEAN. Her father Magloire ARBOUR and John F. LYNETT himself witnessed. Why was Emelie's father present but not her mother? Perhaps her mother was a littleupset with Emelie because she was already pregnant. Leocadie seems to have changed her mind, though, by the time her first grandchild was born, as she became her godmother.

Emelie and Joseph had 14 children, seven daughters and seven sons. In 1890, Joseph owned a farm in Waubaushene on Concession 11, Lot 10. The family was still found in Waubaushene in April 1891, but definitely leftthe area before April 1901.Furthermore, in 1895, their daughter was born in Verner, which is located in northern Ontario, in Nipissing District. It seems as if the family moved there at some point between 1891 and 1895. By 1901, the family was found living in CaldwellTownship in Nipissing District.

After being widowed, Emelie seems to have returned to her family in Simcoe County, where she married for a second time to Charles LaBATT. Charles' origins are unknown.

Emelie was just a tiny little lady and seemingly quite a character. Shesmoked a pipe but was courteous enough to hide it when the priest cameto visit. Emelie died after September 1951, as that is when she attended the anniversary party of her brother Alphonse in Waubaushene.

17 Feb 2009: Finally found a death date for Emelie. Now we will see if we can find an obituary for her.

13 April 1870 -- Alfred-Joseph ARBOUR was another child of my great-great-grandparents Magloire ARBOUR and Leocadie CHARTIER-ROBERT. Alfred was born in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, as the 3rd of 14 children. He was also the first of Magloireand Leocadie's children to be baptized in the new parish church in Ste-Emelie. Around the time Alfred became a teenager, he and his family arrived in Ontariofrom Quebec, settling in theWaubaushene area. It was there that he married 18-year old Mary THERRIEN on 29 December 1890. Alfred and Mary welcomed 13 children into this world, 8 daughters and 5 sons. Over the years, Alfred toiled as a farmer, millhand, and general laborer. He was 69-years old when he died of cancer on 30 May1929, in Waubaushene. Mary passed away on 18 September 1946. They were both buried in St John's Catholic Cemetery in Waubaushene. Alfred and Mary are accountable for 35 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

After their wedding, Merrille and Georgina established their home in Waubaushene, where they raised 11 children, five daughters and six sons. In 1901, the young family rented a three-room house on ¼acre on Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. The large household was completely bilingual: both English and French were spokenso all of the children grew up knowing both. However, as many of themleft home to work in the predominately English-speaking workplace, they nearly all forgot their first language. Only Pamela, Alda, Orval, andBud maintained their ability to communicate in French. In 1937, the family purchased their first car, a 1935Studebaker for $700. Their youngestson Bud learned to drive in this car and often drove his parents around visiting family and friends.
Merrille spent most of his life working for the Georgian Bay Lumber Company. In winter, he cut logs in the forest. In summer, he worked in thesaw mill in town. As a young family, they endured hard times and the daily challenges of the era. Their dedication to work did eventually payoff, though. In 1933, at the age of 60, Merrille was able to purchase a farm adjoining the village of Waubaushene.He carried on a mixed farming operation until his retirement in 1948 at the age of 75. He remainedon the farm until 1955. Children of the extended family and their friends fondly remember Merrille'sfarm, where they often played. They also went to pick morels. Taking a tin can with some butter, they would go into the fields,pick the morels, and cook them right there on a little fire. Picking violets at the farm became an annual affair. Easter was also a joyous time when family visited from Toronto. This was usually maple syrup-making time. They also came to hayin the summer.
In 1956, Merrille took up residence in the Beechwood Nursing Home in Penetanguishene. Georgina had been bedridden and paralyzed since experiencing a stroke in 1942 and had been a resident of the homesince 1950. InApril 1956, a large party was heldat the nursing home for Merrille andGeorgina to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. In addition to their 11 children and 37 grandchildren, they also had 20 great-grandchildren at that time. Like his father, Merrille was a laborer who workedhard all of his life, giving up only as old age set in. Merrille and Georgina died within a couple ofmonths of each other. He on 21 January 1957in Penetanguishene and she on 11 April 1957. They were buried next to each other inSt John's Cemetery inWaubaushene.
Merrille and Georgina are remembered by their children as being very good to them and extremely understanding parents.

06 April 1877 -- Born in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, Marie-Caroline ARBOUR was the 7th of 14 children born to my great-great-grandparents Magloire ARBOUR and Leocadie CHARTIER-ROBERT. Her father Magloire was profiled on 30 March. Carrie wasabout 6-years old when her family made the big move from Ste-Emelie to settle in Waubaushene, ON. At 21-years old,she married lumberjack John Alexander WOODS in Waubaushene on 26 December 1898. The young couple settled into their home in Waubaushene and shortly afterward began their family of 8 children, 6 daughters and 2 sons. At some point around 1911,John decided that having 6 children underthe age of 11 was made more difficult with him being away in the bush for so much ofthe time. He then tooka job at the grain elevator in Victoria Harbour, ON, and the family moved into a house on William Street West, just down the street from her parents' house. Carrie still had 6 kids at home when John died of prostate cancer at the age of 48. He hadsuffered for 14 months with "hypertrophy of the prostate" (enlargementof the prostate) and 2 or 3 months with "pyelo-nephritis" (kidney failure) under the care of Dr. D. W. McKENZIE. Carrie was 80-years old whenshe died on 13 January 1958. BothCarrie and John were laid to rest in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Victoria Harbour

From Linda CHARRON via email on 18 Feb 2009: Janet-Diana Arbour was the10th of 14 children born to Magloire Arbour and Leocadie Chartier-Robert dit Bazinet in Ste-Emelie-de-l'Energie, QC, 28 October1882. She was baptised in Ste-Emelie with her uncle Jean Baptiste Chartier-Robert andaunt Rosalie Arbour standing as Godparents. Some documents recorded her name as Marie-Diana. Since her headstone recorded the name "Diana" weassume this was her preferred name. On 20 October 1898, Diana, at theageof 16, was confirmed by Revered Paul Bruches, Archbishop of Montrealwhile visiting at St John's Church for that purpose. Her brothers Oscar and William were also confirmed the same day. At the age of 20 Diana married EdmondBrodeur who was 24 at thetime. Edmond was the son of Jeremy (also knownas Jeremiah) Brodeur (born 1845 in Quebec) and Louise Roberts (born 1847 on the Isle of Gurnsey in England). He was the 3rd born of about 11 children. His brother Albertmarried Elide Arbour, his sisterMary Etta married William Arbour. On 16 June 1891, Edmond was confirmed in St Margaret's Church, Midland, by Reverend John F. McAble, Archbishop of Toronto visiting for just that purpose. There were two Arbourbrothers in Edmond's confirmation class - Peter and Baptiste. Peter Arbour is my great grandfather. The wedding ceremony between Diana and Edmond took place 22 April 1902, in St John's RC Church in Waubaushene. The ceremony was performed byReverend Louis Arthur Barcelo and witnessedbyhisbrother Ernest and her sister Mary-Louise. The couple settled in Waubaushene where their six children were born. A child born in 1906,(Joseph-Edmond Gaston Brodeur) died at the age of 3 months. Thomas Moreau and Willie Martel were askedto be pallbearers. Another son Thomas Gilbert "Sib" Arbour played professional hockey and was coached by his cousin (Ty Arbour) at one time. In 1923 a baby girl was born breech withthe umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Dr. Porter, MD, was unableto revivethe child. She was buried the same day in St John's RC Cemetery. Edmond died in 1955 in Ontario (perhaps close to either Midland orWaubaushene). He is buried in Plot 22W2 in St Margaret's RC Cemetery in Midland. Diana predeceased him in 1952 attheage of 70. She too is buried in St Margaret's RC Cemetery, Plot 22W2 in Midland. Only two of their seven children have been recorded as living to marrying age.

It is situated across the road from Martyrs Shrine, along the Wye River, 4 miles from Victoria Harbour & 4 milesfrom Midland. While they were excavating the ruins, they unearthed many 300-year old relics, as archaeologists worked out a plan to restore Forte-Ste Marie. It stands today & attracts many tourists.From there Oscar worked in Port McNicoll at the Grain Elevator. There the ships came in to load up with grain & deliver it elsewhere."

John Baptiste and Annie eventually had six children, four daughters andtwo sons, who were probably all born in Waubaushene. In 1901, the family of three owned a five-room house on ¼ acre of Concession 10, Lot 10,in Waubaushene. They are all liste?uCanadille recsaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab»d as Presbyterian so must have followed Annie's faith. John Baptiste earned $360 that year as a Railroad Section Man.

As a section man, John Baptiste no doubt used the "pumper" in Waubaushene. The pumper was a railway handcart which was constructed of a small,sturdy platform with four wheels which fit the contour of the tracks. In the middle of the platform was astructure with a handle that was pumped by two people, one back and one front. Section men used this conveyance to inspect switches, ties, and tracks,ensuring they did not fall into disrepair. The pumper in Waubaushene was kept in a wooden toolshedafew yards past the water tank. Our John Baptiste was remembered as being "a faithful railway worker for many years."

Some point after Annie's death, John Baptiste married Alice HARRIS. Alice was a widow with two children, Eleanor and Ron. Her maiden name and origin are unknown. John Baptiste and Alice had no children together. They lived in Waubaushene on Pine Street, down the hill from his father Basile and a little closer to the beach located at the street's end. --> On 07 Oct 2009, additional info was finally uncovered about this marraige -- yea!

26 Feb 1871 -- John Baptiste ARBOUR was born in Belle Ewart, Ontario --the eldest of 7 children of Basile ARBOUR and Ann Jane MOONEY. As a preschooler, John Baptiste and his family moved to the end of the rail line and settled in Tay Township, ON.On 01 Jul 1895, John Baptiste married 18-year old Annie Eveline McCONKEY in Orillia, ON. John Baptiste and Annie eventually had 6 children, 4 daughters and 2 sons, who were likely all born in Waubaushene, ON. In 1901, the family of 3 owned a five-room house on ¼ acre of Concession 10, Lot 10, in Waubaushene. They are all listed as Presbyterian so must have followed Annie's faith. John Baptiste earned $360 that year as a Railroad Section Man. As a section man, John Baptiste no doubt used the"?u Canadille recsaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»pumper" in Waubaushene. The pumper was a railway handcart which was constructed of a small, sturdy platform with four wheels which fit the contour of the tracks. In the middle of the platform was a structurewith a handlethat was pumped by two people,one back and one front. Section men used this conveyance to inspect switches, ties, and tracks, ensuring they did not fall into disrepair. The pumper in Waubaushene was kept in a wooden toolshed a few yards pastthe water tank. Our John Baptiste was remembered as being "a faithful railway worker for many years."On 19 Jan 1911, John Baptiste lost his Annie when she died of heart failure. She had suffered with pernicious anemia for 3 months under a doctor's care, but the illness eventually weakened her heart and she passed away. Annie never got to know the 7 grandchildren they would eventuallyhave. On 30 Aug 1926, in Gravenhurst, ON, John Baptiste married for asecond time to widow SarahAliceBOYCE. John Baptiste and Alice had no children together. They lived in Waubaushene on Pine Street, down the hill from his father Basile and near the beach located at the street's end. On 02 Aug 1945, 74-year old John Baptiste died andwaslater laidto rest in the Protestant Cemetery in Waubaushene. Alice died on 09 Feb 1947in St Thomas, ON.

Notes:

Will was tall and thin and even died his hair. Although his hair was naturally red, the dying gave it a "purple look." He was always quite proud of his wavy head of hair. According to the 1881 Census, Will and Lizzie's fathers, Basile and Joseph, had homes near each other. Will and Lizzie probably grew up together as friends. Unfortunately, though, their friendship did not last, as Lizzie died young, at the birth of their son in 1897. After Lizzie's death, Will returned with young Howard to live with his parents for a time. He was still there in April 1901 at the time of the Census. In fact, little Howard was seemingly raised by his grandparents Basile and Jane and was even recorded as being their sonin the Census.

Will and second wife Ellen settled in Waubaushene, where they had threechildren, one daughter and two sons, at the registration of whom, Will's occupation was listed as laborer and millhand. They also became godparents to Napoleon's daughter Isabelle ARBOUR in April 1904 in Midland.Apparently, the two couples Will-and-Ellen and Napoleon-and-Emma were quite close. In March 1917, son Howard responded to a question in his military paperwork that his father was still living in Waubaushene. It isunknown when or where Will passed away, although it is believed that Will died in Campbellford, Ontario, in Northumberland County on the north shore of Lake Ontario. When Ellen predeceased Will, he appears to have then marriedfor a third time, probably about 1916, location unknown.Will did not have any children with his third wife and was known to still be living in about 1920.

01 Mar 1876 -- Several years after his parents moved from Quebec to Ontario, Henri Joseph ARBOUR was born in Port Severn, ON - the 4th of 7 children of Basile ARBOUR and Ann Jane MOONEY. On 16 Nov 1904, at age 28,Harry married Elizabeth Jane RIDDELL in Toronto. It is unclear how thecouple ended up there - perhaps they eloped. Together, Harry and Elizabeth raised a large family of 11 children inWaubaushene. They all seem to have followed their mother's Presbyterian faith, although at least one son was buried in a Catholic cemetery. Additionally, the family religion was recorded as being Methodist in 1911. Similar to many others inthe Port Severn-Waubaushene area, Harry was a saw mill laborer. He wasalso the last in his line to speak French. Elizabeth suffered for years with an ailmentknown as Bright's Disease and was just 47-years old when she passed away due to chronic nephritis on 19 Dec 1927. She never had the chance to meet any of their 16 grandchildren. Harry himself lived to age 77 before dying of lung cancer on 25 Apr 1953, in Midland, ON.

29 April 1878 -- Born in Port Severn, Ontario, Samuel Basile ARBOUR wasthe 5th of 7 children of farmer and mill worker Basile ARBOUR and his wife Ann Jane MOONEY. Sam was at home with his parents inWaubaushene during the 1901 Census, but heseems tohave set out on his own after that. By 1908, he was working as a lumberman in Little Current, ON, locatedon Manitoulin Island in the Manitoulin District. On 23 March 1908, Sammarried 20-year old Martha Ann WILKIN in Little Current.Their family expanded almost immediately with the birth of their first son less than 3 months later. He was followed by 2 brothers and a sister. Sam and family left the Little Current area at some point after 1911. They were found in Sault Sainte Marie, ON, by 1919and thereafter until Sam's deathin 1942. Martha passed away in 1954. Both of them were buried in Old Greenwood Cemetery in Sault Sainte Marie. They are responsible for 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

TAY SOLON DIES, PINNED UNDER TREE
Pinned under a tree he was cutting in a bush in sub-zero weather near Port Severn, Charles Arbour, 73, of Waubaushene, Tay Township councillor, was found dead by neighbors around 7 pm last night. Prov. Cons. Jack Shepherd, who investigated, said Mr. Arbour went alone to Pratt's bush,on the old Port Severn Road, in the morning to cut cordwood. When he did not return home at 5 pm, a neighbour, Harry Walker, and his two sons, Russell and James, went searching for him. Mr. Arbour was found lyingon the ground with a tree about 8" thick and 25' long lying across hisstomach. The aged man had apparently had his noon meal for embers werestill smouldering in the wood fire on which he had cooked his dinner. It is believed the accident happened between 3 and 4 pm. Dr. G. Brown, Coldwater, and Dr.D.C. Swan, Midland Coroner, were of the opinion that Mr. Arbour had frozen to death when he was unable to free himself, Cons. Shepherd told this paper. It is not known yet whether or not an inquestwill be held. Member of a well-known Waubaushene family, Mr. Arbour is survived by his wife and several brothers and sisters.

From Carolyn HUDSON: A sad ending for a wonderful uncle, and aunt who always had an apple for their little niece. They had no children, so their nieces and nephews received a generous portion of love.

For Christmas of 1895, Annie Belle received an autograph book from the brother, Willy, of her sister-in-law Annie McCONKEY. Among its pages are rhymes signed by several brothers and uncles. This treasured keepsakeis now held by her granddaughter Carolyn. As a young woman, Annie Belle became like a mother to many of her nieces and nephews. When Lizzie, wife of brother Will, died at nephew Howard's birth in 1897, Auntie Annie Belle was there for him. When Annie, wife of brother John Baptiste,died in 1911, Auntie Annie Belle was there for their children. Annie Belle's presence in the life of Howard was obviously very strong. Throughout his military service during WWI, Howard reported Auntie Annie Belle as his next ofkin, while still reporting his father to be living. In addition, by May 1918 in these same records, Annie Belle had married and was known as Mrs. Annie Belle KING. Annie Belle and Herbert seem to have known and dated each other for many yearsbefore marrying. When AnnieBelle was just 16, Herbert wrote a little poem to her in her autograph book: "To Annie B.: Remember me early, Remember me late, Remember the boy you kissed at the gate. From your friend, M. H. King," dated Waubaushene 7 June 1899. Annie Belle andHerbert did eventually get together. When they married in the Methodist Church in 1918, they both reported their religion as Methodist. The young couple went on to have three daughters and a tiny son who diedat birth. In their later years, Annie Belleand Herbert lived with their daughter Joyce and her family. One day, Annie Belle fell and broke her hip and was placed in the Deep River Hospital in Deep River, Ontario. Due to separation stress, within a week, Herbert had a stroke and died inthesame hospital. Annie Belle recoveredfrom her injury and was later transferred to the Chesley Nursing Home in Chesley, Ontario, near their daughter Iris. She later died at this home as a resultof heart disease.

28 March 1877 -- Born in Joliette, QC, Joseph-Edgar ARBOUR was the 4th of 6 children of blacksmith Joseph-Jean-Baptiste ARBOUR and Vitaline FISETTE. On 14 Oct 1902, Edgar married 30-year old Zelia GARNEAU in Batiscan, QC. Sometime after their wedding, Edgar and Zelia seem to have moved to Shawinigan, QC. It is unclear why Edgar is found so far from his birth place. Batiscan is 124 km northeast ofJoliette; Shawinigan is somewhat in the same vicinity at 110 km northeast of Joliette. In any event, all 5 children - 2 daughters and 3 sons - were born in Shawinigan between 1903 and 1909; however, only 2 of them lived into adulthood. The young family was also resided here in 1911, when Edgar was working as ajourneyman. Edgar and Zelia appearto have lived out their days withinthe community ofShawinigan. Edgar died there on 05 Feb 1947. It is unknown when or where Zelia passed away. From this union grew 3 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

In 1940, John reported that he had earned $393 in 1939.

Perhaps our John is the John ARBOUR who was born on 19 Mar 1881 and whodied in Aug 1970. His SSN 044-05-8367 was issued in Connecticut before1951.[SSDI]

08 June 1906 -- Born in Joliette City, Quebec, Joseph-Henry-Lucien ARBOUR was the eldest of 3 children of boot laster and miller Narcisse-"Henri" ARBOUR and his second wife Ozelia MARTINEAU. Lucien was nearly 30 when he married Therese PERREAULT on20 May 1936 in Joliette. The young family settled in Joliette and remained there the rest of their lives. Over a 17-year span, Lucien and Therese had 8 children, 5 daughters and 3 sons. Lucien was 68-years old when he died in Jolietteon 11 August 1974. Therese lived 3 more decades before passing away in St-Thomas, QC, on 25 November 2002, at the age of 86.

The funeral procession will leave from her residence, 3549 St Denis Street, to St-Alphonse Church in Youville and then to the Cote-des-Neiges Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to attend without further invitation. Opinion of the hour of the funeral on Monday.
