Notes:

As a young man, Francois travelled back to his ancestors' homeland of France. Although the reason for this is not crystal clear, Francois was a mariner so perhaps his work brought him there. Once there, Francois met the woman he was destined to marry. His bride Marie-Marguerite HENRYand her family were Acadian exiles living in France.
According to Paul-Yvon BELLIVEAU, a Parish Priest in present-day Gatineau, Quebec, the question concerning the true reason for the expulsion of the Acadians from Acadie in 1755 remains a very controversial issue. The Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 madeall of eastern Canada a British Colony and all residents were considered British subjects. Some claim the expulsion to have been strictly a religious question wherein the English demanded allegiance to the Throne of England, which wasof course of theAnglican Faith. The Acadians, being of the Roman Catholic Faith, couldnot swear this kind of allegiance without renouncing their obedience to the authority of the Pope. The Acadians were, however, assured by their priest that swearing allegiancetothe Throne of England was a noble and virtuous patriotic gesture and would not interfere with their continued practice of the Roman Catholic Faith. Many Acadians did in fact give their allegiance to the Throne of England but were exiled nonetheless. Apparently the Acadians were in possession of the most fertile landsin central Nova Scotia. The swearing allegiance to the Throne of England became a poor excuse to get the Acadians off these fertile lands sothe England could take possessionof them.
In any event, Francois and Marie appear to have settled in the LeHavre area after their wedding to begin their family. They seem to have had three sons. Francois and his family occupied farm No. 20 at the Ligne Acadienne in Poitou Province,France,in 1774.
In 1785, Spain extended a Land Grant to Acadian exiles. The Spanish owned the land of what is present-day Louisiana in the United States. Francois and Marie decided to take them up on the offer and moved their young family across the Atlantic. Theydeparted from France on 11 Jun 1785 and arrived on 19 August 1785 onboard "Le Beaumont," a 180-ton merchantvessel chartered by the Spanish government for the exclusive privilegeof transporting Acadian exiles from France to Louisiana and captainedbyOliver DANIEL.
The young family immigrated to New Orleans and then two weeks later, travelled up the Mississippi River to their portion of the land grant at the settlement of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In September 1785, Francois took possession of his virgin forestland which was located on the West bank of the Mississippi, two and a half leagues (about six and a half miles) above a point opposite the fort at Baton Rouge, where they established their own branch of the ARBOUR Family. Today thereare many Cajuncousins, descendants of Francois and Marie.
Francois was only 47-years old when he died at his homestead in Baton Rouge in 1790, after a long and serious illness under the care of Dr. Michel MAHIER. Due to his illness, Francois had little time after his arrival and must have worked hard to clear his land and establish a farm. He had no more than four active years - or less even - in which he built a levee, cleared and fenced a fair portion of land, built two houses,and accumulated the possessions listed in the inventoryof his estateafter his death. The inventory includes oxen, cows, calves, a heifer, a bull, a mare and colt, a sow,hogs, a cart with leather straps for oxen, tools, a hand mill for rice, and some other items, altogether appraisedat 179 pesos, 4 reales. The "lastthe habitation on which said deceaseddied, of sixarpents front on which there is a good levee, twenty arpents cleared and twelve with fences of the French and English style, two cabins and good land with many cypress trees" was appraised at 200pesosand actually totaled 263 arpents.
On 4 July 1792, Marie took her own personal items and then an auction was held to sell off everything else to pay the family debt, including medical expenses and the loss of the 1790 and 1791 crops.The auction brought 366 pesos, 7 reales, and all but 58 pesos were used to pay the debts. The remainder was divided between Marie and their three sons. Marie's whereabout after this are unknown.

Section 1. Be it enacted, etc., That the United States shall have power to purchase or condemn in the manner prescribed by law, upon making Just compensation therefore, any land in the State of Louisiana not already in use for public purposes, required for customhouses, court-houses, arsenals, national cemeteries, or for other purposes of the government of the United States.

Sec. 2. Be it further enacted, etc., That the United States may enter upon and occupy any land which may have been or may be purchased or condemned, or otherwise acquired, and shall have the right of exclusive legislation, and concurrent jurisdiction, together with the State of Louisiana, over such land and the structures thereon, and shall hold the same exempt from all State, parochial, municipal, or other taxation. ALEXANDRIA NATIONAL CEMETERY.
This cemetery, with the roadway belonging thereto, is situated at Pineville, in the parish of Rapides, and contains an area of 8.24 acres. It was taken possession of for military purposes under act of Congress approved February 2, 1867 (14 Stat., 399).

Title (to cemetery).—Decree of condemnation for lot 24 in Poissin division of the village of Pineville, in the parish of Rapides, containing 8.24 acres, in cause No. 7248, ex parte, Secretary of War, in the circuit court of the United States for the fifth circuit and district of Louisiana. Decree rendered and filed with the record in said cause in the clerk's office of said court at New Orleans April 26,1875.

Whereas, a formal application has been filed by the said United States, through their properly accredited representative, for the aforesaid cession, so far as relates to the lands hereinafter described; now, therefore,

When he was 15-years old, Firmin immigrated to the United States of America with his parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. Firmin andhis wife Rosalie settled in St James, where they had seven children, three daughters and four sons. The family was not listed in St James Parish in 1810 Census. What happened to them? Perhaps something tragic happened, such as Rosalie and all the childrendied, as no further sign of them has ever been found. Firmin possibly lived with hisbrother Frederic and family in 1810. Firmin is believed to have remarried in 1812. A Firmin ARBOUR married SusannaGLOVER on 1 July 1812 at St Joseph's in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Notes:

a young man, Francois worked as a mariner, like his father. When he was18-years old, Francois immigrated to the United States of America withhis parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. Francois and his wife Jeanne had nine children, six daughters and three sons. By 1810, thefamily lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they contributed to the immense growth of the community. In 1810, the town filled only six pages in the Census rolls, but by 1820, had grown to 24 pages. Francois andJeanne lived there in 1810 with three of their daughters, as the others seem to have died by then. In fact, none of their sons lived until adulthood and the ARBOUR name ended with Francois on this line. In December 1810, the family lived next door toFrancois DAIGLE, probably Jeanne's father. A Private Fr. ARBOUR fought with the 8th Regiment (Meriam's Regiment), Louisiana Military, during the War of 1812. There were no other Francis/Francois ARBOURs alive at this time so one may conclude it wasthis Francois who fought for his home and that he died after 1812. However, speculation exists that Fr. could actually stand for Frederickso no conclusions can be made. It is unclear when or where Francois andJeanne passed away. Notes:

When he was 13-years old, Frederic immigrated to the United States of America with his parents and settled in the State of Louisiana. After their wedding, Frederic and Rose settled in Baton Rouge, where they had five children, three daughters and two sons. Frederic's name appears in the records of Spanish West Florida as a property holder in 1800, in 1801, and in 1811, as well as a merchant in Baton Rouge in 1808. The family was confirmed to have still lived there in 1810. That year, the young family had several other people living in their home, probably Frederic's brother Firmin plus others. They also owned one slave. On 7 September 1812, Frederic sold a parcel of his land to a fellow by the name ofHypollite TIVOLLIER. The propertywas located at the edge of his land, adjacent to that of his brother John's. The land measured just over 22'by 55' and was sold for $433, quite a nice sum in those days.

Their respite from British oppression was short-lived, however. Francois and Marie had another son, Louis-Nicolas, at Archigny, Poitou, in Jun 1774. Despite the failureof theventure and the retreat of most of the Poitou Acadiansto Nantes in late 1775 and early 1776, Francoisand Marie remained at Archigny, where yet another son, Louis-Joseph, was baptized in Jun 1778. Louis-Nicolas died at Archigny, age9, in Dec 1782. BySep 1784, Francois and his family had joined the Acadians in the port city of Nantes, where they survivedas best they could on work he could find and on government handouts. Youngest son Louis-Joseph probably died at Nantes in late 1784 or early 1785. By 1785, many Acadians like Francois, fils weredone with life in the mother country. When the Spanish government offered the Acadians inFrance the chance for a new life in faraway Louisiana, Francois Arbour,fils and his family agreed to take it.

Francois-Henry, eldest son of Francois Arbour and Marie Henry, was bornat Le Havre, France, in c1767 and followed his parents and siblings toLouisiana aboard Le Beaumont, the third of the Seven Ships, in 1785. He married Marie-Jeanne-Jacqueline, called Jeanne, daughter of fellow Acadian Francois Daigle, at St-Gabriel in Sep 1790. Jeanne also had come to Louisiana aboard Le Beaumont. They settled at Baton Rouge, where their children were born. Their daughters married into the Altazin and Lerry families.

Jean-Louis-Firmin, called Louis and sometimes Firmin, second son of Francois Arbour and Marie Henry, was born at Le Havre, France, in c1770 and followed his parents and siblings to Louisiana aboard Le Beaumont, the third of the Seven Ships, in 1785. He married Rosalie, daughter of fellow Acadian Michel Poirier of St-Jacques, in Apr 1793. Rosalie was a native of Louisiana. They settled at St-Jacques, now St James Parish, where their children were born. Their daughter married intothe Legendre family. Jean-Louis-Firmin remarried to Susanna, daughter of Anglo-American George Glover, at the BatonRouge church, East Baton Rouge Parish, inJul 1812. None of his sons seem to have created families of their own,so his line ofthe family, except for its blood, died with him.

NON-ACADIAN FAMILIES in LOUISIANA
The Arbours of Baton Rouge, themselves, may not have been Acadians but French Canadians. Francois Arbour, fils was born in Québec, not GreaterAcadia, and, despite his having lived amongst Acadian exiles in Franceand married an Acadian exile thereheW? 20s-e Le ssaole?ees18 Rivitab»«tab», his link to Greater Acadia is a tenuous one based on suppositions. After immigrating from France, Francois, fils and his family settled in the BatonRouge area, and there his descendants remained. Interestingly, a number of families with a similarsurname, Harbour, definitely not Acadian, also settled in South Louisiana. Judging from the the number of slaves they held in the decades before the War Between the States,some of them were as wealthy as the Acadian Arbours ofEast Baton RougeParish:
Adonegy or Adonager Harbour married Anna Dalton or Queremos. Their daughter Anna married Anglo-American John Harelson of Virginia at Baton Rouge in September 1806. Their daughter Sally married Anglo-American LouisGardner at Baton Rouge in Jan 1806.Adonager probably was Anglo-American himself.
In Jul 1850, P. H. Harbour held 11 slaves on his Ascension Parish farm.Ten years later, in Jun 1860, he held 9 slaves on his farm in Ascension's Seventh Ward.
In Aug 1850, Pleasant J. Harbour owned 47 slaves on his Pointe Coupee Parish plantation, and 34 slaves on his East Feliciana Plantation, northeast of Baton Rouge.
At the same time, John A. Harbour held 47 slaves on his East Feliciana Parish plantation.
In Jun 1860, Wm. H. Harbour owned 7 slaves on his Pointe Coupee Parish farm.
In Aug 1860, B. T. Harbour owned 8 slaves on his East Baton Rouge Parish farm.
CONCLUSION

Brother Octave alsoserved in CompanyAof the Miles' Legion Infantry, but his service with the unit was more praiseworthy. He, too, was married when he enlisted in CompanyA atBaton Rouge in Sep 1862. He was promoted to corporal a few weeks later, and then to fifth sergeant in Mar1863.After the disastroussurrender at Port Hudson in Jul 1863, members of Company A of the Miles' Legion served in Company I ofOgden's Regiment Louisiana Cavalry, Octave Arbour among them. He remained a sergeant and surrendered with his unit at Gainesville, Alabama, inMay1865. ArthurArbour, a young lawyer from Baton Rouge, alsoserved the Southern Confederacy in uniform,but his relationship to the Arbour brothers is not revealed in the church and civil records. In Jun 1861, at age 20, Arthur enlisted in Company Bof the 7thRegiment Louisiana Infantry, a front-line unit raised in East Baton Rouge Parish that fought gallantly in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Arthur followed his company to Virginia, but his service there wascut short byillness or injury. He wassent to a Richmond hospital in Oct 1861, and received a medical discharge the following month. He probably returned to Baton Rouge. The War took a terrible toll on the Arbour family's economic standing.After Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in Jan 1863, Federal forces controlling the lower Mississippi freed the slaves onevery plantation their forces could reach. This included the Arbour holdings in East Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes. Union navy gunboats shelledand burned dozens of plantations houses along the lower river. Afterthe War, the Arbours of Baton Rouge had to endure as best they could a free-labor postwar Southern economy. Dozens of Arbours can be foundtodayintheBaton Rouge area,most ofthem descendants of Frédéric the planter. The family's namealso is spelled Arbot,Arboure, Arbourg, Arboux, Hambourg, Harbourg, Harbourgh.

Where did he & his family live in France before 1773, when he appears in Poitou? Certainly Le Havre, where he married Marie Henry in Nov 1765,& the priest who recorded the marriage noted that the couple had resided in Le Havre for 1 1/2 years. Perhaps Francois, fils lived in Cherbourg before then, where 2 young Arbours, Guillaume, born in c1749, & Chrysostôme, born in c1750, died in Dec 1758 & Jan 1759 respectively. Interesting note: As teenagers, Francois-Henry & Jeanne sailed to LA onthe same ship; their families, in fact, are next to one another on thepassenger list of Le Beaumont, family nos. 16 & 17. The ARBOURs went to Baton Rouge with most of the other immigrants aboard Le Beaumont. TheDAIGLEs also went to Baton Rouge but by 1788 had moved to Manchac/St-Gabriel, just downriver. This did not deter young Francois-Henry from marrying Jeanne, whom he may have known, & loved, since their childhood in France. Although his marriage was recorded at the St-Gabriel church, he probably was married in the Baton Rouge district where he lived. Notes:

After their wedding, Frederick and Adeline settled near family in BatonRouge, where they had 12 children, four daughters and eight sons. The couple was confirmed to be living in Baton Rouge in 1840,in 1850, and in 1860. Frederick became oneof the highly respected men of the East Baton Rouge and Iberville Parishes, and accumulated considerable wealth inthe lumber business, which he lost duringthe Civil War by refusing to take the oath of allegiance. The reason for this may haveto do with Frederick's love of the southern way of life. In Sep 1850, he owned 30 slaves, many of whom probably worked at his mills. There were two Arbour sawmills, one at Grosse Tete and one at Baton Rouge, which were located on barges moored on the river front.It is not clear whether the sawmills were owned jointly by the elder Frederic as well as his son Frederick, or by the son alone. It is said, however, that the younger Frederickbuilt his large Baton Rouge home of red cedar from Tennessee which hadbeen floated down the river for a proposed railroad which would have connected Baton Rouge and Port Gibson. When the plan for the railroad fell through, Frederick obtained the lumber for his home. This was probablyin about 1831 or 1832. An interesting note about Arbour heritage hereis that even though they were separated by more than 2,000 miles, Arbours from all branches of the family pursued their fate within the lumber industry. Frederick's house,known as the Big House, rested on whatis nowthe corner of First Street and Louisiana Avenue in Baton Rouge. Many years later, the railroad put tracks down quite near the house. In fact, they were so close that sparks from the coal-burningengines often ignited fires on the house. Thissad factis the reason why the house waslater torn down instead of being preserved. During the Civil War, lifein Baton Rouge became too risky for the family so Frederick sent the women and children to live in Grosse Tete, Louisiana. After the War,Fredericwas forced to attempt to regain his life out of salvaged war losses. These trying times were no doubt the reason that Frederick did not live much longer. Of Frederick's extensive landholdings in Baton Rouge, 10 acres were still registeredas the "estate of Frederick Arbour" and remained within the family through 1962. At that time, Tallulah Arbour retained custody of the deed and paid the annual taxes in the event thatthe family should ever want to do anything with the property.

As a boy, Frederick's father hired a tutor for him and his brothers, one Antoine Pujol. The young lads became well-educated in both French andEnglish. After their wedding, Frederick and Lodiska settled into the Big House in Baton Rouge, where theyhad nine children, five daughters and four sons. The family was confirmed to be living there in 1860. Shortly thereafter the US became engaged in a bitter Civil War. During the Civil War, Frederick is believed to have enlisted on 8 March 1862 at Iberville, Louisiana. Lieutenant Arbour served with Company D, 27th Louisiana Infantry. He was taken prisoner by the Union on 4 July 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and later reported for exchange on 1 April 1864 at Shreveport, Louisiana. Neither henor his widow lived long enough to collect his pension, which was arranged for Confederate soldiers in 1920. In fact, Frederick died just several years after the war. His widow lived another 40 years. Lodiska lived in Baton Rouge in 1900 and in 1910.In 1900, she lived at 609 St Louis Street with son Adolph. In 1910, shelived with daughter Edna and son-in-law Alfred PERSAC.

She lived there in 1900, in 1910, andin 1920. 1920 was also the year that Celestine began to collect Bienvenue's veteran's pension from the Civil War- an amount of $8 per month.

Octave married Susan Caroline Gayle on 4 or 5 December 1860 at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge. Reverend W. E. M. Linfield officiated. Susan (aka Carrie Gayle) was born in Baton Rouge on 22 October 1839 to William Hull Gayle and Virginia Harney Elam. After their wedding, Octave and Carrie were the first to leave the Arbour flock. All of the others remained at the Big House with Frederic and Adeline, where French was used almost exclusively. Carrie spoke only English and was probably not very comfortable among them. Although Carrie was raisedin the Methodist-Espicopal faith,she and Octave raised all of their children in the Catholic Church, which Carrie later adopted for herself. Almost eight years after their wedding, Octave and Carrie's marriage was blessed - or revalidated - by the Roman Catholic Church on 28 March1868.On the same day, Carrie was also baptised a Catholic and the next day she was confirmed. Less than two years after their initial marriage, the Civil War began and Octave enlisted in the Confederate Army. Carriespent the war years with her parents a few miles outside of Baton Rouge. Upon his leaving, Carrie made the following entry in her bible: "Octave left me on the 20th of September 1862 to join the army. Left me alone with our little Willie." Octave volunteered for service on 1 September 1862 at Baton Rouge, alongside older brother Bienvenue. He eventuallyrose to the rank of Sergeant with Company A, Miles Legion, Louisiana Volunteers. His company later became part of Ogden's Louisiana Cavalry. At some point, his entire unitwas captured by the Union and he appearedon the Rolls of Prisoners of War. They were all paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, on 12 May 1865. In 1920, Octave's heirs became eligible for his veteran's pension of $8 per month. During the War, Octave seemsto have made at least one visit to Carrie during about June 1863, as their second son, Octave, was born in March 1864. Octave and Carrie eventually had 11 children, six daughters and five sons. They lived in Baton Rouge during the Census enumerations of 1870, 1880, and 1900. In 1870, they lived at 1 West Baton Rouge Street, which was actually the house of older brother Joseph and family. In 1880, they lived on Charles Street. In 1900, they lived at 805 St Ferdinand Street. On 27 January 1874, Octave was awarded a patent for an invention of his. His spike auger was made of iron and, as of 1988, resided in the Cliff Petersen Collection in Santa Monica, California. Octave's later life was in striking contrast to his antebellum boyhood.Afterthe lean, hard years of the Reconstruction, he became a prosperous banker. After a few years, however, the bank failed and he and his family lived in modest circumstances throughout the rest of his life while he struggled to repay depositorswith his own earnings.

OLD BATON ROUGE RESIDENTS
Yesterday death claimed three old residents of Baton Rouge . . . Mr. [Octav] Arbour was a Confederate soldier and was for many years an activefigure in the life of the city and parish. His lumberingand planting interests were at one time extensive.A pathetic incident of his latter days is told of his UCV connection. It was know that he was listed for one of the Daughters' crosses of honor. He felt that death was approaching and expressed the fear that his cross would not be received beforethe end. His cross was given him only a few weeks ago by the Joanna Waddill chapter.

As a young man, Arthur saw his country divided by Civil War and decided to volunteer. He enlisted on 7 June 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana. He was the first and the youngest of four brothers to sign-up. Private Arbour served with Company B, 7th Louisiana Infantry. He was injured in the line of duty on 8 October 1861 and was discharged by the Medical Examination Board on 5 November 1861 at Richmond. After their wedding, Arthur and Olivia settled in New Orleans, where they had at least their first seven children. The young family lived there in 1870 and in 1880, when theylived at 12 West New Orleans Street. They eventually had11 children, four daughters and seven sons. By 1900, they had moved toBaton Rouge, where they lived at 306 St Ferdinand Street. At the time of his military enlistment, Arthur reportedhis occupation as lawyer. In1920, Olivia was found living in Baton Rouge at 316 St Ferdinand Street. This was also the year she began collecting Arthur's veteran's pension - an amount of $8 per month.

During the Civil War, Oscar may have served with the ConfederateArmy. Even though no military record exists for him, his heirs did apply for a veteran's pension in 1920. FIGHTING FOR & AGAINST THE LANDIN BUCHANAN TOWNSHIP [Elizabeth Bond] During the 1830s, as the square timber business was being drawn further up the Ottawa River in search for large white pines to ship to Europe, timbermen began settling on plots of landalong the river's shores.These men and their families would come from New England or New France, and were for the most part wholly unprepared for the rough conditions that they would face. The settlers would come with the spring thaw and begin by building a basic shelter andbarn to have shelter for the upcoming winter, and perhaps clearing a small area of forest for a garden. Themen, and often young boys, would leave their farms in late fall and labor in the lumber camps untilthe spring when the logs were ready to bedriven down the Ottawa River to Quebec City. Fortunate men would be asked to stay on for the spring drive which paid quite well because it was dangerous work. At the end of their work term, the men would be paid for their season's work and would return to their small farms with supplies. The early settlers soon learned that the agricultural conditions inBuchanan were far from ideal. Much of their acreage was either swampy or sandy; thearable soil that they did possess was incredibly rockyand contained old growth forest that needed to be painstakingly cleared at a rate of about an acre a year. Large stone piles scattered densely across Buchanan today attest to the backbreaking work that went in to turning forest into fields. Still,itwas a worthwhile exercise for the earlysettlers to attempt to farm their land in order to support their families. Supplemental cash income could be made after 1854 by sellingfirewood to the passing steamboats carrying freight and passengersup theOttawa River between Pembroke and Des Joachims. In many cases, this small extra income made a great difference to the struggling families. Also, for those lucky enoughto getahead, the logging camps would purchase surplus stores of food and hay from nearby farmers and this would provide anextra income. The original Law farm, located on the rise above the lighthouse, was one such depot farm. The early settlers and the area FirstNations seemed to have gotten alongquite well. The white settlersrespected the Natives who had the knowledge and skills to survive in their shared harsh surroundings. Both groups of people were anxious to learn fromeachother, and within a generation white settlers and Native inhabitants were living asneighbors.As Buchanan turned into a growing community during the mid-nineteenth century, centralized government administration in Upper Canada had a hard time keeping up. Plots of land were notformally surveyed until many years after it was settled, andland disputes had to be settled in informal ways. Gerald retells a story passed on to him about a boxing match that took place between Joseph Nadeauand Baptiste Leduke with a referee and in front of a crowd of people, so that the results of thecontestwould be binding as witnessed by the community in lieu of legal papers. Gerald recalls another account of unofficial justice in theearlydays of settlement. An unintentional manslaughtertook place in the mid-1800s at Foran's Stopping Place, one of2 hotels located in Buchanan Township. Innkeeper Patty Foran's wife subdued a rowdy patron with a candlestick over thehead.The troublemaker was put outside, where he was forgotten about and froze to death. It was decided that Pat would take responsibility for the death. The next time a traveling judge came up the river, Pat presented himself at a place referred to asCourt Island. He was sentenced to two years of prison in Ottawa. Pat paddled the judge back to Ottawaon his way to serve his sentence. An account of this happening was recorded in The Ottawa Journal in April1925 in an article entitled"Old Time Stuff."
EARLY FARMING IN BUCHANAN TWP [Gerald Nadeau] "They cleared some of theroughest land that you could possibly attempt to work with, for some reason. I guess it was becauseit was close to the river and they didn'twant to go anyfurther away because their workplace was the river. So youhad to make your garden behind your house - if it meant moving stones thatwhatyou'd do, a lot of stones. And most of these little farms only had two cows or three, apig - in fact, the early people didn't even keepa dog, because it was a waste of food. And I don't know if they kept a cat or not; I imagine thatthey didn't even have one of those. You needed very little. The little rough patches of cleared land seemed togivethem a bare amount of agriculture required to keep afamily. And that meant if the man went in to make square timber or hew timber fora lumber company, his wife would have to stay home, feed the cow, or cows, and she would be responsible forlooking after whatever gave them milk for their family. I never heard of people having chickens, real early. And they kept a pig, but the pig was only kept in summer because in winter, it was the winter's food. But thoselittle farms seemedtogive enough foodfor a cow, and enough turnips and potatoes for a family to use becauseeverybody seemed to have a root cellar, so that meant that they were growing enough to keep, to have a storage to put it in. But the men who workedin thesquare timber business seemed to make enough money that thespending of a family might be a hundred dollars in a year, maybe not much more. But it was only the very necessary things that you had to buy, which was probably tea,sugar,cloth or possibly needles, thread, just the most bare things that a householdwould need. You wouldn't be putting curtains on windows or things of that nature. And you might buya potor pan or two, if you had extra money. Ora pane ofglass for yourwindows. I guess in those days if youhad to buy this you'd have to bring it allthe way up the river. When the men would return from the rafting, they used to come by canoe. They hadan outfit called a stage that used tocome overlandbetweenone watercourse and another, so that they'd come up through let's say Fitzroy Harbour, and then they'd have a stage to wherever the next point was. So it would take probably 6 to 10 days tocome from Quebec City to the OttawaValley. So you'dhave to carry and canoethe purchases you made, and bring those home. You couldn't spend a lotof money because you couldn't carry home a great deal. The little bit of land along with the work they did was enough to raise a family inthose conditions."
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NATIVES & WHITE SETTLERS IN BUCHANAN [Gerald] "The Natives and the people when they first came here, they seemed to be dependent on each other. Because they depended on the Natives tolearnthethings the natives knew and sometimes, to get help from the Natives. And the Natives never seemed to feel that they were less important than the white people because they needed each other for the same reasons. The Natives made ..for sickness. Somebody would go to one of those native women, the older women, and they would get cures made up for what they had. If you wanted snowshoes, you had to go to the Natives to get them, because they could tan the hides, andif youwanteddeerskin mitts, you'd have to go to a Native again.And if you wanted help and the Native was your only neighbour, if you could work the way that the Native wanted to work, you could get him to help you. That meant he would come when it suited him, not when it suited you. They were able to live together quite well. I'll show you later the rocking chair this old girl used to sit on. She said that when she was just a small girl, her mother had two cows, and she used to make butter, and in thespringtime when the grass was good and the cows wouldmilk better she'd have extra butter, and some days there'd be 20 canoes coming down the [Ottawa] River, atone time in one group. And all the women would be paddling, and all the small kidshad a little paddle, and she said she'd see all the littlefaces along the gunnels of the canoe, wanting to see the white people because some of them had never seen white people. They'd all get lined up and peekover the top of the canoe.And then they'dcome in, and the menwould get out in the water, about waist deep. They'd come in, and someof them had been there before, and they'd want to buy butter. She'd have the butter in wooden bowls, and they'd take the butterdownon therocks,and they'd eat the butter just like candy, with their hands. Yep, butterto them was like candy. But the men were the only ones who got the butter, because the women and the small children stayed in the canoe with the dogs. And she said they usedto be going to Ft William and the smoke would be so heavy from so many campfires, it was just like a fog, up inthe trees. And everybody came with whatever dogs they had left fromthe year before, and they turned them all loose. The dogswould fight and they'dbreed, they'd bark and they'd run, it was a holy terror the firstweek when they'd all come in. The women would fish and cook and themen would sleep most of the summer. And every day the priest would sayamass and he'dhaveto be paidfor it. So this was howthey got the money from the Natives. If somebody had died in the bush the year before, youcould have a mass said for them even though they were buried out in the bush where you'd never seethemagain. But they were then taught that this new religion, you could just request and the guy was in heaven as soon as the mass was finished. So a lot of them were, how would you put it, taken? Because their beliefs werejust aboutas sound as what they were being taught. Then in the fall they said that they were down there one time and this guy had a young familyandhis wife had died in the bush and he had spent the summer in Fort William. And they were ready to go back up to I guess Kippawa orTemagami or Temiskamang maybe, but he had tohave amother for those children. Because a man alone couldn't lookaftersmall ones in the bush. So one of the guys had a daughter who wasn't married, and Ithink you could picture somebody being maybe a little on the slow side, or god knows why. But it didn't matter. When the bargain was made between the man who losthis wife and the father who hadthis girl who was not yet married, she would be up going with thisother family when the fall came. So they happened to be there the time thatthe father brought the girl down to get her married by the priest who wasthere. And it took two of them to hold her while the marriage was goingon. Shecouldn't speak no English butthe father knew a little, and the old fella told me the words he said: Whateverher name was, he used her name, and he said you're going to marry untoone Joe Mackenzie.Joe Mackenzie was the native who had lost his wife and had the small children.So when the ceremony was over, it was legal. They put her inthe canoeand pushed out, and that was it. It was survival at a time when he could have losthis small kids if he went into the bush withno one to care for them. It's a strange thing when you think back but when you see today's world, you know, how often doyou see separations and other things which don't work."
EARLY STEAMBOATS BROUGHT EXTRA INCOME [Gerald] "Most of those steamboats were puton there for a money making business. And they charged peoplefor freight and passengers both. The freight came from Pembroke, because the railroad only came as far as Chalk River. The steamboat had a crew ofsometimes up to six and eight people. Some had acook. There was deck hands, generally four. There was a pilot who knew the [Ottawa] River, and a Captain. And there were always a couple of extras who were keptto fill in different jobs. They were steam and had boilersand usedwood. And the wood was bought from the farm people and bush workers who lived along the River. But youhad tohave a wharf to putyourwood on, or else share your wharf with your neighbour. And this was where the trouble always started with selectingthe land along the River. Some people liked to get their sons side by side, so that they could sharethe same wharf. Because thewharfwasthen your job. If you could put wood on the wharfyou got cash money for it, so anybody that was fortunate enough to have a wharf location would be like today having a gas station on a busy corner. The deck hands wheeled the wood in and they wheeled it in on wheelbarrows, and came down the ramp and dumped it into the hull, and theycould takea quarter cord in today's measurement of wood on a wheelbarrow. And then dump it down the hole in the hull that was cut to put the wood in, and then theboiler man had access to that wood from below deck.And one of the most disgraceful things that could ever happen to a deck hand was that he couldn't handle his load when he got down to the hole in the deck and the wheelbarrow would go down into the hull and he'dbe cursed forever for that."
FIGHTING FOR LAND IN BUCHANAN [Gerald] "Andwhat happened was, poor old Joe wanted to get the piece adjoining to the one he had already got, sohis two sons could liveside by side. Ofcourse, Baptiste[Leduke] wanteda piece of that, and he didn't want thedunes. The sand dunes were worthless, as far as growing anything. So, someone said 'OK, you two guys are pretty good defendersof your rafts. Let's see which one of you will get thepiece of land.' This was a fair competition between people who did notdislike each other. It was a physical-what would we say-test in asense, but not in an angry way. Just as two wrestlers might compete, and when it'sover they shake hands and thewinner takesthe purse, you know? So this is how that was done. It wasn't done in asense of anger, no.Isidore Richard was the referee for fair play at this meeting. I suppose they would just have a piece of ground that would be big enough thatthey wouldnot haveroom to move, and of course the families of bothwould as today's ball games go, cheer for the side you wanted to win. And the old fella that I got this story from said his father had told himabout thegoings onat this meeting, and Mrs. Baptistewasrunning around in circles around the outside telling him in French to 'Hit hard, hit hard!' because he wasn't hitting hard enough. And she knew the outcome was not going to be good. "
WOMEN OF CHARACTER [Elizabeth] As women followed theirhusband's into the Upper Ottawa Valley beginningin the 1830s, they met extreme hardshipsthat their upbringings in settled New England or New France never could have prepared them for. Survival alone proved to bequite a challenge,and raising a familywas even more difficult. Elizabeth Leroy (nee Baines) was the first female settler in Buchanan Twp. She came with her husband Simon Leroy, a skilled square-timber hewer and a former UnitedEmpire Loyalist. Previously, Elizabeth was aschoolteacher in NewEngland. Sheopened theupper floorof her house as the first school in Buchanan, andher own daughters were among the first students. This employ kept her busy during the cold months of the yearwhen her husband was working in the lumber camps furtherback in the bush. It is hard to imagine what difficulties the wives of the lumbermen had to face while their husbands were away. They were left alone to care for the children, tend to the animals, and keep a fire stoked. Their nearest neighbors were a difficult winter's walk away, and perhaps loneliness was as harsh as the cold. When one hears the anecdote about Mrs. Richard, wife of one of the earliest French settlers in Buchanan, outin the middleof the night chasingafter a bear because ithad grabbedthe family swine, one can begin to imagine the courage and determination required by these early female settlers. While all of the wives of lumbermen were virtually single parents fromautumn to springeach year,they couldtake somesolace inthe fact thattheir husbands would return when the river ice broke up, and that theywould bring household supplies and money (if they hadn't spent it all at Stopping Places along the way). However, the lumber business was dangerous and the widowsof the lumbermen killed on the job could count on no such support. The story of widow Emmy Chequen, who was left to raiseher seven children on a miniscule monthly allowance, highlights how tragedycould strike downa family and only strength ofcharacter could pullthe women through. Women often had to seek ways to supplement their household income. During prohibition, Buchanan also was rich with headstrong women who made sought-after whiskey. Rosina Brunelle was one of thebest-known brewers inthe township. She was a tiny French Canadian lady who used to ride a bicycle on a high wire at the Quebec Midway before coming to the Valley. Another favoritewhiskey maker wasMrs. Bob Chequen,Emmy's sister-in-law. Once,when caught by the authorities with a washtub full of peeled potatoes out behind the barns, she made the excuse that her ill sow's digestive system couldn't handlethe peels and was let off the hook.Perhaps themost impressive womento have graced Buchanan Township was ViolaMcCarthy (nee Blimkie). Viola was born on a farm in Buchanan, and as a young bride of 19 she took over the mail-delivery contract that her husband could no longer carry out.Viola delivered the mail to the 37 families in Buchanan throughout the year andin all weather. She used horse and cutter in the winter months, surmounting incredible drifts of snow that madereaching each homestead a challenge. She helped uneducated residents to readtheir letters and write responses. She often gave residents lifts to the main road, and during WWII when gas and tires were rationed she acted as ambulance. Along with the mail, she delivered household items such as100-pound bags of flour,hen feed, and even small livestock. On one occasion sheevendelivered a baby. Perhaps oneof the most important things that Viola brought the women of Buchanan Township was the Eaton's catalogue. They looked forwardto its delivery and, for a few stolen minutes of thedays that followed, wouldwistfullydaydreamabout the fine things that would have no use in the harsh and unforgiving Buchanan wilderness.
MRS. RICHARD TRIES TO RECOVER FAMILY PIG FROM A BEAR [Gerald] "Mrs. Richard was left with the small children she had, and Mr. Richard wentto work in the square timber business in the fall, and they had a pen with a pig in it not far from their cabin, andshe heard the pig squeal. The biggest threatthen was bears. She went out and heard the pig squealing.She had a little lantern which was acandle in a frame. She got some pans or something that could make a noise, thinking that she could maybe scare the bear,but the bearhad lifted thepig over the log fence with his frontpaws and he got into the bushwith it. So she followed himas she thought,I guesshe'll drop the pig any time. He didn't. So it was a fight to see who was going to get the pig. So finallyshe got far enough away from the cabin or housethat she couldn't go any farther with the small kidsso she had to come back andlet the pig go. So that was their winter's supply of meat. And you know, I've got a book called TheFoxfire and they have a bear proof pigpen in the Adirondacks. Andthose people lived much like the people wherewe lived. They used the same system ofthinking.It wasexactly. When I read that, I had to readsome of it twice because I couldn't believe thatpeoplein another part of the country wouldbe so much alike and be so distant. But those people in the AppalachianMountains had thesame thinking patternas wehad atthe river, using an uneducated way of dealing with things."
LOST COMMUNITY & WHAT WAS LEFT TO LOSE [Elizabeth] Life for the second generation ofsettlers in Buchanan was perhaps moredifficult though less isolated than it was for thefirst settlers. In the 1850s and 1860s,as the lumber tradebegan to require more unskilledlabourers and wintersupplyroutes, the construction of a major transportation artery from Pembroke toMattawa wasbegun.
FAILING LAND THAT SETTLERS LOST [Gerald] "You would notice a cow path on the outside of the fences, not on the inside. It didn't seem strange then because none of us ever knew that you had to feed cows in summertime. In summer they were supposed tofind the food themselves. And they weren'tto get that in the field. The field was used togrow winter food for them. So the fences wereput around the field, and the cattle being hungry, they would look at the field and want to go in, so they'd haveapath around the fence. And every farmerseemed to have that sameway ofthinking. Because you didn't have enough land to grow and to pasture as well. ALEC ARBOUR was one of thepeople who lived at the .. near the Atomic Plant [where it is located today], and he was a very seriousman.He was a very honestperson and he looked at things in a serious fashion.And he had a son who went to work for the railroad and became a section man in Westmeath. And one day his son came up and got him to take himdownfor avisit andwhenthey got below Pembroke near Westmeaththe cattle were inside the fences. They were in fields that looked like hayfields.But in Westmeath they were pasture fields! So he insisted to his son to stop his car. He said 'I got to goinand tell that farmer that hiscowsare in his hay.' And the son said 'Dad, that's not a hayfield. That's a pasture.' 'Well,' he said, 'where I come from, that's a hay field!' And his son said 'Well, don't go in there andtell him that his cattleareinthere 'cause he'll laugh. Becausethat's what it's like down here. We have fields ofsummer feed for cattle.' But there's an awful difference in the way that people who havecan live, and people who have not can.It'sthat simple. You make duewith whatyouhave. And even the cattlehad their shortages. Because they were expected to eat leaves and grassesalong the paths and places. We know today that you can't keep animals in that condition. And asI look at that now, I see thatouranimals were theworstones off, because they hadtodowith much lessthan they should have. That's dogs, cats, horses, and cattle. Every one. I look back today and I feel sorry thatconditions were that bad for anything. And the reasonwas that people didn't have thenecessaryfeed forthem orthemoney to buy it. So maybein that sense, everybody might be better off. Animalsincluded."
A COMMUNITY LOST [Gerald] [Elizabeth:How did the residents know that they were losing their land?] "Theywere visited by a person that represented the purchasing people, and they were told by them that the land wasbeing looked at as a potential sitefor development of some sort. Fewpeople knew what it was for, but they vaguely thought that ithad something todo with thewar, because at that pointin timethewarwas not going favorable. So they came and told the people that there was a chance that that land wouldbe purchased and they wouldhave to move. Then it createda division. The older people did not want to move. The younger, who were notattachedas much to the land, they looked on that area as one thatdidn't furnish any opportunity. An opportunityto make a living wasverylimited. But then the older people could not, were too old to work,so they had no gains bythe Governmentbuying their property. So that divided the people in their thinking. The old people did not want to leave the [Ottawa] River. It wasthe River they weregonna miss. Because some knewthat they'd never get back tothat river again. It's not a bigthing butit's animportantthing when that's all a person has. It was sadness, really. Sadness. The water smell, it'shard to explain.But the smell of theRiver wasone of the most nicest things I remember about it. Why, I can't tell you. Strange, eh, thatsomething like that can stand out as being important? When you don't have too much, the little things mean more.Andthe smell of water even today, Ilike it becauseI can almost recallthat same thing again. The memoriesand history ofneighbours andthings that you had toleave behind, that was the saddest and the most noticeable loss. Not the value of the land thatwas left, so much asthe breaking up of the groups of people that lived by the River. Itwas as if a glass wasshattered into many pieces because no one couldever regroup again. You had to go your separate ways because there was not available places foryou so that the numbers of people could ever live close togetheragain. And thatwas one of the losses that was the most severe, I wouldsay."
RELOCATING A LIFE CAN BE A PAIN IN THE NECK [Gerald] "The year before we were going to leave, a cookhouse was built out oflogs, which was supposed to bea greatimprovement tothe leaner thatwas therebefore.This thing wasgoing to have astovein itand we could whittle in there in the winter, which was what I wantedin the worstway. We'djust gotthe thing-the logs ofit-up, and the roof part of it on, when the Government came andsaid 'You guys are going to have to leave, andget out.' But anyway, Rogerwent in the springtime, and his time was runningout, and he was livingin the old house at the river where the lighthouse is. And hehad with him a lady who was a French woman; she was a little thin woman. And shewas down at theold house. He wentup tothe clearance and took some of these logs off the summer kitchen to take it to move it down to the oldhouse and then takeit up the river. He put on some of these logsand started downthe hilland right wherethe roadtakes a bend, the water was washing-there was a little stream there-so the ice had sort ofwashed out under one side, and unknown to him whenhe came tothis place where the icewouldn't support the sled, it broke away. And he went down frontward andwent over the front of the load andgot under the logs. He was there for two or three hours before she realized hewasn't coming back, something was wrong. When she came up, she saw the situation but she couldn't do anything about it because she couldn't liftthe logs. Shehad towalk upthe ice to Balmer's Bay,to where John Robert lived, and gethim to come with her. And the two of them managed to unload the logs off him. Theygot him to the hospital and I remember seeing himin the hospital, and they had him all tiedup withpulleysand ropes and what have you because his legs were all broken andthey were incasts, youknow? He lived through that, and thelast time he gotinto problems was he was coming home from the Byways Hotel one nightand walked in the middle of the highway andanother car came and hit him again! With broken legs and arms and whatever I guess you can imagine and they thought, 'What are we gonna do with him now?' [Laughter]. Oh, he had a good sense of humor,but he was ninety two orthree when he died."
COMING FULL CIRCLE [Gerald] "You were torn from something that had grewon you, or in you, without giving you a choice, or saying 'Do you wantto givethis up, or don'tyou?' Andthere's somethingabout saying it in that fashion thatmakes you a bitbitter.Because you don't have a choice. It's likesomeone imposingsomething on you, you know? And you think 'Oh lord, I'm human, I live in a free country, why do I nothave a choice?' Because you were led to believe that you owned the little block of land that you livedon. And then someone comes alongand says 'Sorry, I'm taking it from you. Youdon't own it, you're only sittinghere. We allowed you to stay here, and we're taking it back.' Butno one ever told you before that thiswould be taken from you. Well, I've just come to the conclusion not that many weeks ago, that the trade-off was worth it. So I thought to myself, I've often feltbad about leaving the [Ottawa] River, but for thegood they'vedone, I would say it was worth it. Yep, becauseifwe had to depend on far-away things we would be in a very difficult situation. I rethought that. I always didn't like having to leave theriverthat I left,but then asI got into a tightspot where I did have needforthe service of that hospital, Ithought to myself 'This is paybacktime.I'm getting paid backwith interest for what I lost.' Does that answer you?"
THE STORYTELLER Gerald Nadeau spent his boyhood years in Buchanan Township on his UncleRoger's farm, helping to tend tothe lighthouse and observing the people around him. He can recallstories about the early days with a crystal clear memory. These stories cover the time from 1830 when the first homesteaders laid claim to unyieldingplots of land along the OttawaRiver,to 1944 when His Majesty The King expropriated the Township of Buchanan for the wareffort. Today, Gerald is one of the only remaining links that enable historians historians to catch a glimpse at what daily life in an Ottawa Valley pioneer community waslike.   Not only is there a confusion over the name Eugene used in the States, there is also some mystery surrounding his marriage, his life, and his death. At some point, he married Maude RIGGS, who was born in OR. Did they marry inOR? Their daughter Fernwas born there inFeb 1911. Did he ever actually marry Maude or did they have a common-law relationship? Their son Eugene was born in OR in Mar 1913. In 1918, Eugene lived in ID.Did Eugene and Maude live in OR for a few years (1910-1913) while theirchildren were born? Did they separate after this? Did Maude remarry? There is no record of her death in OR under Maude ARBOUR or Maude RIGGS. Also around this time, son Eugene was supposed to have run away from home as a teenager. Was it after hisfather's death? Paul's WWII Draft Registration reported him as being 5'8" and 155 pounds with brown eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. Also the index finger on his right hand waspartly missing.

24 Feb 1867 -- Henry Anthony ARBOUR was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana,as the 6th of 8 children of Joseph Henry ARBOUR and Julia Caroline MAURIN. This particular line of ARBOURs came from Quebec to Louisiana by way of France. It is an interesting story in and of itself. Perhaps on 3March, we will profile Manny's great-grandfather Frederic ARBOUR and the tale will be told. Although baptized withthe name of Henry Anthony or Henri Antoine, he was known as Manny. How and when he became known bythis moniker, is still a mystery. On 10 Oct 1894, Manny married a young Louisiana woman by the name of Anna Ernestine BRIAN. After their wedding, Manny and Anna settled in Baton Rouge, where they had five children, 2 daughters and 3 sons. The young family lived in Baton Rouge in 1900, in 1910, and in 1920, at the home of Manny's spinster sister Clara. By 1930, they had purchased the home at 352 Saint Louis Street and sister Clara lived with them. Throughout this time, Manny seems to have beenemployed as an Associate of Fuqua Hardware Company in Baton Rouge. Hedied on 12 Jan 1936, at the age of 68. His widow Anna lived another 27years before dying on 22 Oct 1963, at the age of 89.

After their wedding, James and Lula settled in Baton Rouge, where they had three children before Lula's disppearance. She did not appear with her family in the Census of 1900. James and family continued to live in Baton Rouge and were found there in 1900, in 1910, and in 1920. In 1900, they lived at 503 Europe Street. In 1910, James lived with his daughter Nellie. In 1920, he livedwith his daughter Nellie and son-in-law Joseph BABIN at 906 GovernmentStreet. Lula's whereabouts are unknown this year. Perhaps the couple had separated.

According to David R. ARBOUR, James died in Baton Rouge, LA, on 08 Apr 1940. Also according to David R. ARBOUR, James was buried in St Joseph's Cemetery in Baton Rouge, LA.

Maude and Nap established their home in Baker, LA, where for many yearsUncle Nap -- among his many property holdings -- owned and operated the only store in town. Maude was a watercolor artist of some reknown. She was also skilled in sewing-- handembroidery and machine-sewing, as well as designing and making her clothes and designing and making quilts,tablecloths, etc. She was devoted to her nieces and nephews and was generous to them with gifts and entertainment. She alwayshad an open doorat her house and there were few long periods when she was without a houseguest -- sisters and cousins in the early years and nieces later on.Although Maude and Nap had no children of their own, they raised two of his nephews,Charlie DAY and Dr.Eric DAY, as well as his niece Bessie BROWN. Sarah BROWN, another niece they had taken to raise, died as a small child. Both Maude and Nap suffered long illnesses before their death. Nap was partially paralyzed and finallybedridden for a number ofyears and after his death Maude was incapacitated for several years. Throughout both illnesses, Maude's sister Sybil ARBOUR devoted her life to their care.

From a photograph of their house in Baker, LA: Their home is now gone. Home was on Camelia Avenue, Baker Louisiana. Mary Belle Horton Brown and Earl Brown lived in an apartment in this house while their eldest daughter was an infant. Photo says it was taken 5 January 1947 and the ditch is for the gas line being brought to Baker.

No history of the City of Baker would be complete without mention of N.B. Brown: business, civic, educational, and religious leader in the Baker community. Napoleon Barfield Brown was the son of Thomas B. Brown and Sara Williams Brown who owned a large plantation on Plank Road east of the present city of Baker. This spacious home which stood on the site of property owned by Dr. E. W. Day Sr. burned years ago. Nap had a half sister Ella White and four Brown sisters: Ollie, Nettie, Bessie, andLena. He had one brother, Wilkins, who was generally spoken of as "Wicks" Brown. As a young man, Nap met, fell in love with, and married MaudArbour of Baton Rouge. The couple had no children of their own but hadconsiderable experience in parental care. The wife of Mr. Wicks died leaving two small girls, Bessie and Sarah. Lena, who had married CharlesDay of Baton Rouge, died one year after her husband, leaving two smallboys, Eric and Charlie. These four childreneventually came to live with Nap and Maud in their home in Baker. Sarah, a precious little girl, died at the age of four. Mr. Brown became a very successful business man. He first had a joint mercantile store with J. B. Merritt. The partnership ended and each went into business for himself. Both prospered. Mr.Brown was the sole owner of the cotton gin which did a flourishing business as long as cotton was king but when the boll-weevil dethroned King Cotton, the gin was closed. Mr. Brown helped to organize the BakerLand Company. This company bought land from Dr. E. B. Young and others. The company laid out streets, lots, five acre tracts, and advertised for prospective home owners. This venture was most profitable until Scenic Highway branched out from Scotlandville, and a road was constructed extending direct to the Baker area. The distance was shortened between theindustries in north Baton Rouge to the Baker area, where men could work in the industries and live with their families in Baker. Mr. andMrs. Brown were good neighbors. They lived next door to the Methodist Parsonage and saw that all went well with the minister's family. If there wasillness or any trouble, Mrs. Brown, an excellent cook, supplied the family with good food until theemergency was over. Many a minister's family left Baker with a little Maud namesake of their good friend and helper. Mr. Brown, although interested and a financial contributor to the Baker Methodist Church, was not a member of the congregation until aftera harrowing experience on the Hammond and Eastern Railway. While on the train, their coach was struck broad-side by a freight engine at a railroad crossing, which overturned their coach. Somehow Mr. Brown was separated from his wife. He searched diligently for her and finally contacted a member of the train crew. He said, "For God's sake, help me find my wife." They found her pinned under the coach. She was rescued and considering the enormity of the wreck, the Browns considered their injuries very slight. When Mr. Brown took the vows of the Baker Methodist Church, Mrs. Brown, then a Catholic, joined with him and worked in the Sunday School and with the Women's Organization. At one time, she was superintendent of the Sunday School. The many varied and complicated activities engaged in by Napoleon Barfield Brown finally took their toll. He became a confined invalid and spent the last months of hislife in a wheel chair, but he was mentally alert and interested in the "goings on" in the community he loved so well until the end. He died 4 September 1934. After N. B. Brown's death, Mrs. Brown went back into the Catholic Church.Her close relatives were of that faith, and she wanted to worship with her family.She had 4children

Throughout her life, Sybil took care not only of her patients but alsoherfamily in later years, tending to the needs of sister Maude and her husband Nap, as well as sister Benie. 03 May 1869 -- Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Edward Joseph ARBOUR wasthe eldest of 11 children of attorney Arthur B. ARBOUR and his wife Olivia Gallagher COMEAUX. Edward seems to have lived in NewOrleans virtually his entire life. In about 1897,he married 20-year old Mary Dora LeBLANC. They had 7 children together, 2 daughters and 5 sons. It is unclear what occupation Edward held for most ofhis life, as the only one found noted in records is as a paper carrier at State Paperin 1920. Edwardwas just 57-years old when he died in New Orleans on 09 January 1927. Mary Dora whereabouts are unknown after April 1930.
