Between 1773 and 1776 Benjamin was made an Overseer of the Poor forWaldershelf and may have been living at Peasbloom House Bolsterstone.From 1797 until his death in 1804, Benjamin farmed at Hermit Royd atWharncliffside on land rented from Lord Milbourne.Benjamin was the only son of Abraham Jackson, and a farmer, like hisfather.The earliest reference found to a Benjamin Jackson is in JosephKenworthy's 'The Early History of Stocksbridge', part 22 which is inSheffield Archives (refMD3341-3). this is in a Special Collection inthe strong room and is unpublished work consisting of typewrittensheets, documents and photographs, stuck into a sort of scrap book.This volume concerns Overseers of the Poor also known asChurchwardens, or Constabulary and has copied lists of people holdingthis posts. One criteria for appointment to the post was having to ownproperty and a Benjamin Jackson of Peasbloom House was listed in1773/4/5/6. He also witnessed the Land Tax Billfor 1774 - this mayhave beenone of the duties of the job.Another reference was found in the Bolsterstone Parish Register of anatural daughter (Hannah Mate) born 8th June1779 - father BenjaminJackson, mother Mary Mate of Peasbloom House. Although this may not bethe 'right'Benjamin, Peasebloom House is a link.In 1797 and 1801 a reference in a Rentbook for the Duke of Melbourne'sEstate of Benjamin Jackson renting property and land at Hermit Royd.The Estate was sold in 1802 and he was listed in the sales catalogueas stillbeing a tennant at this time (Joseph Kenworthy's 'The EarlyHistory of Stocksbridge' Vol 2 Sheffield Local History Library). Theproperty at Dyson Holme Estate was owned by Benjamin Jackson butrented out (referencein rentbook 1801).In Benjamin Jackson's will dated 1803 he leaves his estate (DysonHolme at Wharncliffeside) to his son Abraham. He leaves anotherfreehold house and an annuity to his wife, the house to pass on tohisgrand-daughter(?) Elizabeth Jackson on his wife's demise. Otherdaughters to inherit were Sarah Parkin, Elizabeth Revell and alsograndson John Charlesworth and his four sisters.The Will also has an Indenture which specifies how all the legaciesare to be paid and seems complicated.Maybe his finances were not asstraightforward as his Will suggested!

Notes:

Abraham was Benjamin's only son and kept the family farming tradition.He married Martha Shaw, who was a local girl and his first twochildren were born in Bradfield and Bolsterstone. Sometime betwen 1784and 1788 hemoved to Hawkshead in Lancashire (now Cumbria) and this iswhere his next two sons were born. He may have moved in order to makebird lime which is a substance made by fermenting holly branches. Agreat deal of holly grew in this part of the Lake District and birdlime wasmuch in demandin the Colonies where it was used not to catchbirds but to catch flies. He returned to Bolsterstone around the timeof his father's death in 1804 and was joint executor of his father'sWill.He lived for a time at Hermit Royd and Thurlstone near Penistone,before moving to a farm in Worrall, which he owned. By the time of hisdeath in 1832, he was quite prosperous, having increased the amount ofland he owned and made other investments in land and property.In his Will (dated 10 July 1831) he leaves :1. To Benjamin Jackson an annuity of £15 from rents of properties inMiddlewood.2. £300 to be shared between Benjamin's children after they had allreached 213. To Ann he also left £300 and specific instructionsthat it was forher 'sole use', sugMal'hôtelllee?es 1753b»Ditab» «tab»gesting that he did not want her husband ThomasWhitley to get his hands on it!4. To William he left £250 and £50 to come from tolls on the turnpikeon Penistone Road.5. Benjamin was born in Bolsterstone. He was living in Dublin in 1810when brother William went there to study at the hospital, but from thetone of his letter to his father, William's relationship was notclose.He was left a legacy by his father Abrham in 1866, and a wife andchildren werementioned but not by name.The 1841 Census returns in which a Benjamin Jackson of the right ageis mentioned, cannot be definitely confirmed.Benjamin is belived to have had a disagreement with his father,FrederickValentine Jackson, who refused to pay for him to become adoctor. He tookan external degree in English at London Universityinstead, qualifying in 1893. He taught English in schools in Oundle(1894), Erith (1896) andMiddlesborough (1902 - 1903) before movingback to Sheffield.He lived at Wincobank and Harcourt Road where he coached privately athis house.Hedied of emphysema on 14 April 1932.

Abraham continued the farming tradition living at Thurlstone nearPenistone and marying local girl Mary Wainwright in 1811. She gave himthree sons but died in 1823 giving birth to a daughter. The daughter,Mary, sadly only lived a few months. In 1828he married ElizabethCreswick ( Criswick) but had no more children. On the death of hisfather in 1832, Abraham inherited the farm at Worrall and moved in. Hecontinued to prosper and bought more land in Wadsley Park.Elizabeth died in 1850 and in 1851,aged 60, he retired, and passedLane Farm to his son Richard who had been living with him and sharingthe work. It comprised the Dwelling House; barns and stables;cow-house; parcels of land; parkland;and Timber Croft.In his willdated 1855 Abraham also left Richard an annuity for life.Son WILLIAM would only inherit the part of Wadsley Park bought byAbraham in 1835.During his lifetime Abraham also purchased part of WADSLEY PARK ESTATE- lying between Lough Dyke and Lane Farm - for £1,800.UnfortxgMal'hôtelllee?es 1753b»Ditab» «tab»unately in 1862 Richard died aged 45 and in march 1865 his onlygrandson, Thomas Edward also died aged just5, leaving no one to takeover the farm.In 1865 ABRAHAM ran into some financial difficulty. In 1810 William sailed to Dublin to become an Intern at the 'lying inhospital' and was shipwrecked on route but finally reached Ireland,returning in July 1811.William set up a medical practice in Sheffield in 1815.William established himselfas an important member of society inSheffield, writing numerous medical articles, lecturing at the medicalschool he helped to found and, as a City Councillor, helped bringabout the foundation of the General Cemetery.William was born at Hawkshead in the Lake District where his familyhad gone to farm. His father was taking advantage of the large amountof holly that grew there at this time, which was used to make birdlime, a profitable business. (Plot L34).OBITUARY OF WILLIAM JACKSON - Sheffield Telegraph - 1867In our obituary this morning we announce the death of the abovegentleman, which took place on Saturday at his residence,Sunny Side,Broomhill. The fact of his being the senior medical practitioner, andthe professional position he occupied inthis town for a long seriesof years, renders necessary something more than an ordinary notice ofthe event. Mr Jackson had completed his 77th year; he had been amember of his profession more than half a century and in actualpractice since 1812. He was best known to the generation which haspassed and is fast passing away.The deceased gentleman had beeninduced to withdraw,inagreat measure, from active duties by asevere and most painful malady which overtook him some fifteen yearsago, and under which he has since passed a life of suffering which hismedicalfriends and advisors have never seen equalled, and for whichthere was no remedy but that rest where all human sufferingterminates. He was apprenticed to Mr Webb, one of the surgeons to theSheffield Infirmary, and afterwards educated in Dublin,in the days ofits greatest celebrity as a school of anatomy, surgery,and especiallymidwifery. To the latter subject he gave more attention in its mostimportantdetails than was normal at that time, and his position as anintern at the greatLying-in-Hospital of that city gave him aknowledge which was of great advantagein after life in extending hispractice to the benefit of the public, and very often, indeed, to thegreat satisfaction of those of his contemporaries, who consulted himand availed themselves of his assistance in grave emergencies. Thesoundnessof hisjudgement, his operative dexterity, and the readinesswith which such aid was afforded, will, we doubt not, be gratefullyacknowledged by thoseof the profession who survive him. Thegravestone used to lie flat, directly at the entrance to the churchdoor (left side facing door) but on visit 10/01/04 this had been moveddue to renovation of pathway. Richard was the only one of Abraham's children to become a farmer andlived with him at Lane Farm in Worrall for most of his life. Hemarried Elizabeth and had one son Thomas Edward. When his fatherretired in 1851, he transferred ownership of the farm to Richard,probably expecting him to carry on the farming tradition in the area,but in 1862 Richard died aged 45.All hope of keeping the farm in the family was lost when grandsonThomas Edward also died just three years later aged 5.They are both buried in St Nicholas churchyard, Bradfield. Edward was a co-founder in 1864 of Sheffield Hospital for Women onFigtree Lane with a Dr Aveling and was associated with the hospital in1881 at its inaugral meeting. Along with father William he was aninfluential lecturer at the Sheffield Medical School and also had aprivate practiceon Hanover Street.He died on November 19th 1888 in Newcastle-upon-Tyneaged 61 but wasburied at the General Cemetery Sheffield (Plot Q80). The deceased gentleman formerly practiced inSheffield over 30 years, where he was oneof the original founders ofthe Hospital for Women, an institution to which he rendered admirableservice, and from which he only retired about seven years ago, onleaving Sheffield to take up his residence in Newcastle-on-Tyne. Hedid not, however, entirely sever his connections with the hospital,but up to the time of his death acted as consulting medical officer,and his opinion was ever held in the highest repute. Dr Jacksonstudiedat the University College, London, and graduated at the LondonUniversity, where he took the degree of M.B. in 1851; afterwardsqualifying for the membership of the Royal College of Surgeons,England, in 1853, havingpreviously obtained the L.S.A degree in 1849.He secured Fellowes Clinical GoldMedal of University College Hospitalin 1850; and the Silver Medal for Materia Medica of the ApothecariesHall in 1848. His contributions to the medical journals havebeen'Operations for vesico-vaginal tistule' Lancet 1861; 'A case oftumours ofthe Brain.' London Medical Review 1861; and 'Four cases ofoviotomy', Lancet 1888. The sudden termination of his illness will bea painful surprise to those in Sheffield(hisnative town) where helived and laboured so long. He was so respectedfor his abilities andpractical skill; so loved for the ready sympathy he brought to all whosuffered, whatever their degree, that his sudden death at acomparatively early age willbefelt as a severe personal grief, bothto high and low.

Philandria married Charles Spooner Laycock in 1854 and her first childMaud was born in Sheffield in 1856. They lived in Canada for a whileas her second child Una was born in Montreal in 1859, but they wereback in Sheffield by 1861 as they appear onthe Census at her father'shouse. Husband Charles however was not present and it's not clear ifthey were visiting or living there. She was not described as a widow.It isn't known what Charles' occupation was but 1866 he died and in1870Philandria remarried. In the same year daughter Una died.Her second husband was WalterSpencer Scattergood who was 15 yearsolder than Philandria and 55 when they were married. His occupationwas Surveyor and in 1871 they were boarders with Maud at a house inBurlemStoke-on-Trent.By 1891, Philandria was a widow again and joint lodging house keeperwith widowed sister Henrietta in Monmouth Street, Ecclesall,Sheffield.In 1901 aged 70, she iwas a pensioner at an Alms House run byShrewsbury Hospital which was acharity and she died aged 74 in 1905.

By 1881, with two teenage childrenand a live-in servant, they were established in a large house inBrightside.In 1888 Henry died, and in the 1891 Census, with her two childrenmarried, she was a joint Lodging House Keeper with her widowed sisterPhilandria. They had three lodgers, one of whom was her brotherThomas.She died in 1892.
