Notes:

Hunter and Georgina had two children. They must have divorced prior to 1913, as Georgina married Otto HARDENSTEIN on 20 January 1913, in BatonRouge. The two children of Hunter and Georgina stayed with their mother in Louisiana. Georgina later diedin Baton Rouge on 29 March 1930, at age 44. It seems as though Hunter moved to Texas after divorcing Georgina or perhaps his relationship with Myrtle is what precipitated their divorce. Hunter's great-grandson John feels that the enchanting Myrtleiswhat drew Hunter away from Georgina and Louisiana. Hunter and Myrtle later had a son. In 1920, the young family lived in Houston, Texas, at 803 Waverly Street. Perhaps our Hunter is the Hunter G. ARBOUR who was listed in the Houston City Directory in 1917 as a brakeman living at 4714 Eli Street.

According to David Rowland ARBOUR Jr., Hunter was born on 08 Mar 1881.

Although Hunter was supposed to have died in either Texas or Louisiana,there is no record of his death in either of the online indices for those States.
--> Note added 19 Aug 2008: According to cemetery records, Hunter died on 20 Aug 1920. However, new online records show his death certificate,which presents different information. He is listed as H.T. ARBOUR in the Texas Death Registrations.

Recorded at the same time as the birth of son Melvin and with a consecutive certificate number (49763) is Infant of Thomas H. ARBIN. Does thismean that Melvin had a twin? Furthermore, there is an Infant of T. H. ARBING who was born on 24 Jan 1916 in Harris Co, TX (2340). Is this another child of our Hunter?
--> Note added 19 Aug 2008: Yes, the first baby was indeed a twin to Melvin, a little stillborn baby girl. Her death certificate has been seen.

Religious services at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825Government St., at 1 pm Monday. Interment in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Celeste and Ron Cernik, Houston, and Marie Louise and Paul Gardiner,Albuquerque; two sons, John Kroger Jr. and Steve Kroger,both of BatonRouge; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by parents, Hunter Arbour and Georgia Ina Stevens Arbour; husband in 1976, John M. Kroger; and a brother in 1988, Fred Arbour. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

Notes:

Melvin's birth record has been difficult to locate. However, now it is known why it was so hard to find. In the index, he is recorded as MuralThomas ARBIN, born in Harris Co, TX, on 10 Dec 1916 (49762).

Melvin was born at 6 pm, apparently assisted by the midwife Mrs. L. E. WILKENS. His stillborn twin sister was delivered at the same time.

According to John SHEFFIELD: After the death of Melvin's father, he went back to Baton Rouge to live with relatives for a while. There was a family dispute over inheritance or interest in the estate.Melvin always said he was "cheated out of his inheritance as a child" by a relative and blamed an uncle. He had no one to defend his interests. His mother was half-Cherokee, considered to be "Colored" in those days. She no doubt suffered the same indignities as Blacks and received the same treatment from many Southern folks. Melvin said he "ran away from home" when he was about twelve. He ended up in the Houston, Texas, area and eventually settled in Pasadena, Texas. Melvin travelled a great deal during his life. He had been to many countries from the Middle East to South America. However, heavoided Louisiana and Baton Rouge specifically. He kept in touch with his sister, but no one else, as he held obvious resentments.

According to John SHEFFIELD: When Melvin bought his first car, he gave his Aunt Bessie a ride. She had never been in an automobile before and tried to sit on the back of the seat.

In 1940, Melvin reported that he had earned $900 in 1939.

If daughter Loretta Annette was born in Jul 1939, where was she during the Census of Apr 1940? There is no record of her death in Texas. Perhaps she was given up for adoption. While Melvin and "Catherine" are considered to be married in the 1940 Census, there has also been no record found of their marriage. Were they really married? Whatever happened tolittle Loretta?
