    Mrs. Joan Arbour Joachim passed away peacefully on the evening of 7 September 2005, surrounded by her family. She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph W. Joachim, Jr. Mother of the late Joseph W. Joachim III and the sister of the late Edgar Francis Arbour, Jr. She was the daughterof the late Edgar Francis Arbour, Sr. and Olga Wallbillich Arbour. Sheis survived by her daughter, Gretchen J. Kerr; Son-in-law Donald H. Kerr; her three grandchildren: Hillary, Elizabeth, and David Kerr; Sister-in-laws: Verna W. Arbour and Margaret J. Le Corgne; along with many nieces and nephews.She had 2 children

Arbour, Jr. (Verna Wetzel) and the late Edgar F. Arbour, Jr., DDS. Joan grew up in New Orleans where she lived until her marriage at which time she moved to Ashville, North Carolina, where she raised her children. Beloved wife of Gregory Grant, MD, mother of Dominque G. Godfrey (Nicholas), the late Sidonie Alexandra Grant and the lateMarie Francoise Grant; sister of Edgar F. Arbour, III (Margaret), JohnW. Arbour (Michele) and the late Thomas A. Arbour; aunt of Caroline A.Willmon, T. Neilson Arbour, Courtney E. Arbour, Megan A. Stryker, MaryElise Arbour, and Nicole Renee Arbour,also four great nieces and one great nephew. Joanwas a graduate of the Academy of the Sacred Heart andNewcomb College where she received a BA in English Literature. Joan was an accomplished author and recipient of the prestigious Thomas Wolfe awardfor fiction for her short story in "Wide Awake in the Pelican State: Stories by Contemporary Louisiana Writers", given annually for short stories. She recently completed her first novel. In additionto her Louisiana rooted inspiration and highest regard for craft, her stories share a deep humanity. Joan was a loving wife, mother and daughter, beloved by a host of nieces and nephew, relatives, in-laws, devoted friends in New Orleans and Ashville andespecially her life long Sacred Heartsisters.She will be sadly missed by all for her sunny disposition, deep caring, beautiful sense of humor and brilliant intellect.     Asheville -- Joan Arbour Grant was a woman who found truth in beauty. She believed in art as presence and practiced personal creativity as a design -- for herself, her family, her friends and the weave of the three. Joan wrote about life as she lived it -- and also wished it to be lived. As an accomplished author, Joan was a recipient of the prestigiousThomas Wolfe Award for fiction for her story in Wide Awake in the Pelican State: Stories by Contemporary Louisiana Writers, given annually for short stories. She had recently completed her first novel, Phoebe's Chances. In addition to her Louisiana-rooted inspiration and highest regard for her craft, her stories demonstrated a deep humanity and softly defined humility. Joan slipped away, with apologies, on Tuesday 16 April 16 2013, in Charleston, South Carolina. Born on 10 January 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the beloved daughter of Mrs. Edgar F. Arbour, Jr. (Verna Wetzel) and the late Edgar F. Arbour, Jr., DDS. Joangrew up in New Orleans where she lived until her marriage to Gregory Grant, MD, at which time she moved to Asheville, North Carolina, where she and her husband reared their children. She was the mother of Dominique G. Godfrey (Nicholas), the late Alexandra Sidonie Grant, and the late Marie Francoise Grant. Joan was also sister of Edgar F. Arbour, III (Margaret) and John W. Arbour (Michele) of New Orleans. Joan was a graduateof the Academy of the Sacred Heart and Newcomb College—where she reeminsintll?e ssaole?ees18 Rivitab» «tab»ceived a BA in English Literature.She was especially connected to Sacred Heart -- as a high-school English teacher and writing instructor -- and as a life-long sister of a group of Sacred Heart alumnae. She will be lamentedby all for her exquisite presence, equable disposition,wry senseofhumor, and quiet intellect. Funeral services will be held at The Cathedral of St John the Baptist (120Broad Street, Charleston),at 2:00 pm, on Monday 22 April2013.
