Fathers and lifeShare

Today as I watched my Dad interract with everyone it struck me how things have come full circle in our family. I fear that he won't make it toanother fathers day. It is sad to think that way but it's so hard to see him struggling to do the easy things now. Simple things like liftinghis leg, stepping up a step, sitting down. Having a conversation or following one. It is just not fair to expect him to stay here anymore forus. When you are young your Dad is your protector. You look to him forprotection and wisdom. Surely he knows everything, he's your Dad. Slayer of dragons, killer of monsters, drier of tears when you fall down onyour bike. He pushes you too. To do things you are afraid of, but you conquer them, and soon you are braver, stronger, smarter. And when you fail, you just brush yourself off, take a deep breathe, and try again. And when you cross the line and do something really bad, he punishes you, but always with explanation, why it was wrong. I remember hating getting spanked for fighting with my brothers, but the worse part was the talk afterwards. Where you finally realized why he was so disappointed in you. Why he let you choose your punishment which always ended up being12 times worse than if he just gave it to you. Use your head, think for yourself, don't be a follower. You can't go wrong with the truth. Hetold me that he could tell when I was lying to him, and I truly believed that. To this day I am a terrible liar. Then you become a teenager, youthink you have figured it all out. You find out your parents have their own faults, and you discount everything they say because of them. Your Dad obviously doesn't know anything, he's just trying to stop you from having a good time. You think youare smarter than him, you don't listen to him, you don't talk to him anymore. He loses track of who youare. You start to ignore his messages, and go your own path. It's a hard way to learn. Finally you are grown and looking back you realizehow much sense your Dad made. How you could have shaved off so much grief from your life just by paying attention, and heeding his advice, or not being so impatient to grow up. And even if hewasn't the perfect parent,he did the best he could giventhe tools and means he had for all of us. And you learn to appreciate that he tried. He at least was the kind of parent who cared enough to try. Now he regresses. He is the one actinglike a little kid. He told me recently he was turning back intoalittleboy. I'm sure it feels like that to him. We have to act like the grownups, we have to handle it. He needshelp with getting dressed and making choices. They are simple choices, they used to be easy movements, butare now difficult for him. Don't ask anymore, just direct. It's easierthat way. What am I supposed to do now? Where am I going? It's just sad and nobody can stop it from happening. And we will do what Dad taughtus to do. Brush ourselves off, take a deep breath, and keep ontrying. I have myown kids now, but this part of being a grown up just bites.

From daughter Donna's facebook page on 02 Oct 2009: After a long battle- my Dad is finally at peace. We love you Dad.
From daughter Donna's facebook page on 06 Oct 2009: Thanks, yes, he wasa big gentle man. Not much would make him lose his temper. I guess he had to be laid back to deal with all of our shenanigans! He taught us the importance of working hard and brushing yourself off and trying again when you failed. And the real important things in life like family. We sure will miss him.
