  It is said he ran away to marry Bertha and they were certainly young -he was 19 and she was 17. It seems certain that he had fallen out withhis father and on the wedding certificate Frederick Valentine is givenas 'deceased' although he was still very much alive.Bertha's mother, Ada Sarah Fox, was in favour of the marriage as shewas a witness and she lived with them until her death in 1940.Ronald worked in the labs at the English Steel Corporation as ananalytical chemist and on retirement worked from home in a shed in theback garden!
