- On 15 November 1915, 18-year old Edgie attempted to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces to serve his country during WWI. At the time, he considered himself a sailor and a laborer. Bio from Facebook 13 Feb 2010:
13 Feb 1897 -- Herman Ludger ARBOUR - known as Edgie - was born in Waubaushene, ON, as the 4th of 7 children born to Edmond ARBOUR and AlcuineLEBLANC. On 15 November 1915, 18-year old Edgie attempted to enlist inthe Canadian Expeditionary Forces toserve his country during WWI. At the time, he considered himself a sailor and a laborer. Upon examination, he was noted to be 5'4" and weighed 140 pounds with a ruddy complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. Although he was assigned to the 157th Battalion, Lance Corporal ARBOUR never got very far from home. On 7 September 1916, he was determined tobe "medically unfit," due to intestinal absorption, which caused him great pain during marching and other activities; he was released from his obligation. On 31 Jul 1918, Edgie married a young Swiss stenographer, Irma Delores FISHER, who tragically diedjust 3 months later when her heart gave out after having pneumonia fora week. Not to be deterred, Edgie married again. This time his bridewas alocal woman, Margaret Violet FITZGERALD, whom he married on 23 Oct 1924 in Midland, ON. Shortly thereafter, the young couple decided to make the move to the US, as other ARBOURs had done before them.Upon entering the US at Detroit, Michigan, on 14May 1925, Edgie was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. He had $165 inhis pocket and planned to relocate permanently to the US. It is unknown if they had any children. In1937, Violet was buried in a grave inSt Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Midland. What circumstances brought her there, we do not know. Once more, Edgie decided to marry; however, we know nothing of this woman, except that Edgie is noted as being married at the time of his father's death in Sep 1945. Having left his sailing days behind him when he moved inland to Michigan, Edgie took up the machinist's trade, where he seems to have worked from 1924 until his retirement. Edgie died in Michigan in Nov 1995, at the age of 98.
