6360 On 15 November 1915, 18-year old Edgie attempted to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces to serve his country during WWI. At the time, he considered himself a sailor and a laborer. Upon examination, he was noted to be 5'4" and weighed140 pounds with a ruddy complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair. Although he was assigned to the 157th Battalion, Lance Corporal ARBOUR never got very far fromhome. On 7 September 1916, he was determined to be "medically unfit," due to intestinal absorption, which caused him great pain during marching and other activities.

Sailed on the "Julienne" from Quebec to New York, NY, departing on 27 Nov 1917 and arriving on 28 Dec 1917. He worked aboard the ship as a Firefighter and was noted to be 5'5" and 135 lbs.

Upon entering the US at Detroit, MI, on 14 May 1925, he was noted to be5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. He had $165 in his pocket and planed to relocate permanently to the US.

In Nov 1933, Edgie was apparently the informant upon the death of Violet's mother:
FITZGERALD, Christena, f, 17 November 1933, 66 years, Ontario, cause - cerebral hemorrhage, burial 20 November 1933 Mt St Louis, d/o John O Harra & Honora Moran, both born Ireland, infm Edgie Arbour of Detroit, son-in-law, Medonte Twp (Simcoe Co.) 030558-33

After losing two wives, Edgie moved to the United States and settled inthe State of Michigan prior to 1951, as confirmed by the Social Security Death Index. Before this time, he seems to have married for a third time, as he and his wife lived in Detroit, Michigan, at the time of hisfather's death in September 1945.

Bio from Facebook 13 Feb 2010:
13 Feb 1897 -- Herman Ludger ARBOUR - known as Edgie - was born in Waubaushene, ON, as the 4th of 7 children born to Edmond ARBOUR and AlcuineLEBLANC. On 15 November 1915, 18-year old Edgie attempted to enlist inthe Canadian Expeditionary Forces toserve his country during WWI. At the time, he considered himself a sailor and a laborer. On 7 September 1916, he was determined tobe "medically unfit," due to intestinal absorption, which caused him great pain during marching and other activities; he was released from his obligation. On 31 Jul 1918, Edgie married a young Swiss stenographer, Irma Delores FISHER, who tragically diedjust 3 months later when her heart gave out after having pneumonia fora week. Not to be deterred, Edgie married again. This time his bridewas alocal woman, Margaret Violet FITZGERALD, whom he married on 23 Oct 1924 in Midland, ON. Shortly thereafter, the young couple decided to make the move to the US, as other ARBOURs had done before them.Upon entering the US at Detroit, Michigan, on 14May 1925, Edgie was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and grey eyes. He had $165 inhis pocket and planned to relocate permanently to the US. It is unknown if they had any children. In1937, Violet was buried in a grave inSt Margaret's Catholic Cemetery in Midland. What circumstances brought her there, we do not know. Once more, Edgie decided to marry; however, we know nothing of this woman, except that Edgie is noted as being married at the time of his father's death in Sep 1945. Having left his sailing days behind him when he moved inland to Michigan, Edgie took up the machinist's trade, where he seems to have worked from 1924 until his retirement. Edgie died in Michigan in Nov 1995, at the age of 98.

29 March 1909 -- Today's profile is to remind all of us that family history is made of people, with all of our warts and flaws. Each of us is human in our own way. Born in Waubaushene, ON, Cecil "Manley" ARBOUR was the 2nd of 2 children of mill hand William Henri ARBOUR and his 2nd wife Ellen-Jane DUPUIS. It is unclear if Manley ever married or had children. On 16 March 1931, Manley was working as an auto assembler when hetraveled to the US via the port of Niagara Falls, NY. Hewas headed from his home in Toronto, ON, to Rochester, NY, for a 2-day visit with Gordon WILLIAMS, 416 Grand Ave, Rochester. He was noted as being 5'9" tallwith a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. He carried $5 in his pocket. Thefollowing year, ourlast piece of information about Manley comes via a news article published in the Canandaigua, NY, Daily Messenger on Monday 12 September 1932:

6365 On 23 Aug 1935, Cecilia arrived in Liverpool, England, aboard the "Andania" operated by the Cunard White Star line, having sailed 3rd class from Montreal, QC. She was headed to 2 Main Street, Bangor Down. The strange thing is that by this time, Cecilia should have already been married yet she was reported as being single and still used the ARBOUR surname. Perhaps the marriage date we have is in error.

On 06 Sep 1935, Cecilia sailed from Belfast, Ireland, aboard the "Athenia." She arrived in Quebec City, QC, on 15 Sep 1935, and was returning to her sister Alma's house at 1 Berkely St, Toronto, ON. Prior to leaving, Cecilia was issued passport #108333 in Ottawao, ON, on 10 Aug 1935.Again, the strange thing is that by this time, Cecilia should have already been married yet she was reported as being single and still used the ARBOUR surname. Perhaps the marriage date we have is in error.

6366 On 24 Jan 1918, Beryl arrived in Port Huron, MI, from Canada. She was 18-years old and claimed no occupation. Beryl was coming from her fatherWalter's home at 78 Muncaster Street in Barrie, ON, and was headed forParkfield, TN. Passage was paid byher mother and she carried no money.Interestingly, Beryl intended to "reside" with her "friend" Capt Arthur R Giddings in Parkfield. She was noted tobe 5'6" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes. It is unclear whether Capt Giddings was serving in the US or Canadian military, as nothing else can be found about him on either side of the border.

Perhaps Beryl married Capt Giddings, as she later used his last name inreferring to herself as Beryl Giddings.

On 30 Dec 1922, Beryl Giddings, now aged 22-years old and widowed, arrived in Buffalo, NY. She once again came from her father Walter's home, which was now located in Iroquois Falls, ON. As a studentnurse, she washeaded for Fordham Hospitalin New York City, NY, and had no idea how long she planned to be there. This time, she was noted to be 5'5" with amedium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; she weighed 145 pounds. Beryl had $50 in her purse.

In Aug 1923, Beryl Giddings again arrived in Buffalo, NY. She reported virtually the same information that she had the prior December. She once again came from her father Walter's home in Iroquois Falls, ON. She was headed for Fordham Hospital in New York City, NY, and had no idea how long she planned to be there. She was noted to be 5'5" with a medium complexion, brown hair, and blue eyes; she weighed 145 pounds. Beryl had $50 in her purse.

Here is a bit of history about Park Field, TN, from http://themilitaryzone.com/bases/nsa_midsouth.htmlon 24 Aug 2009.
Naval Support Activity Mid-South - Millington, TN
Naval Support Activity Mid-South has a long and rich history, one whichcan be traced to the birth of military aviation itself and to our country's proudest moments. This site was originally established in November 1917 as Park Field, an Army SignalCorps Aviation School used to train pilots for service with the Allied Forces during WWI. By February 1918, flight operations were in full swing, butonly until November of thatyear when the Armistice was signed. Two days after the signing, trainingoperations were ceased. At that time the airfield began pioneering airmail routes throughout Tennessee and the surrounding states. In March1920, the government officially purchased Park Field. However, the airfield continuedto decline until itwaslittle more than a storage area for aircraft andparts. Ironically, the Stock Market "Crash" of 1929 breathed new life into Park Field. During the 1930s the field served as a transient camp for unemployed workers. In 1937 the Resettlement Administration took over the land and developed model farms used to demonstratewhat could be achieved with correctly managed land. Park Field remained under this agency's jurisdiction until the outbreak of WWII. Just as the onset of WWI had given Park Fielditsbirth in 1917, the declaration of war on 8 December 1941, had similar results, heralding the arrivalof naval aviation to the Memphis area. In February of 1942, the Navy Shore Station Development Boardrecommended approval of a reserve aviation baseon the former site of Park Field. On 15 September 1942, the Naval Reserve Aviation Base was officially commissioned on the south side of the station. On 1 January 1943, the Naval Reserve Aviation Base was renamed Naval Air Station Memphis. However, in April 1949, the base's functions completely changed, and a new Naval Air Station was established, different in both scope and function. The new NAS assumed logistic support for all thecommands at Navy Memphis, except the Naval Hospital. The boundaries included all Navy property on both sides of the Millington-Arlington Road (Navy Road). NAS Memphis continued its support and logistics role for some 50 years. The 1993 BaseRealignment and Closure Commission directed the realignment of Naval Air Station Memphis. NAS Memphis was redesignated Naval Support Activity Memphis 30 September 1995. The name was changed to Naval Support Activity Mid-South 1 October 1998,tomore closely identify the base's mission requirements and to reflecttheNavy's approach to regionalization.

Very little can be found about Fordham Hospital, but it is thought to have been connected with Fordham University, which operated a medical school at one point that had closed sometime before 1905. Fordham University has several campuses located around New York City, one of which began in the Fordham neighborhood area of the Bronx, according to wikipedia on 24 Aug 2009.

He reported his name to be Arthur Raymond GIDDINGS andsaid he was born in Murray Harbor, PEI, on 09 Jan 1896. Guestbook
I hope you find comfort knowing that your extended family is thinking about you. Your father was a kind man. I often thought about how well hedid raising all of you after you lost your mother. Over the years I frequently ran into Gib grocery shopping. He was always out early when the store opened. We would stop and talk for a while and he was always sointerested in how my family and my brothersand sisters families were doing. He was a lovely man and he will be missed by all who knew him.
