Une opinion contestée par certains historiens. 1610: Visite du sieur François des Prairies qui, par erreur, aborde l'Île de Montréal par le nord. La rivière lui devrait son nom. 1615: 24 juin, la première messe aurait été célébrée par les pères Récollets, Louis Jamet et Joseph Le Caron sur les berges de la rivière des Prairies. 1650: L'île de Montréal subit de plus en plus les attaques iroquoises. La traite des fourrures s'organise et attise les rivalités entre Autochtones, Français, Hollandais et Anglais. 1663: Devenue la propriété des Sulpiciens, ils stimulent la colonisation dans toute l'étendue de leur territoire. 1671: Missions religieuses, sous le patronage de Dollier de Casson, déployées non seulement à Rivière-des-Prairies et Pointe-aux-Trembles, mais dans toute la région avoisinante. L'abbé de Casson , supérieur du Séminaire érige le 7 décembre 1671, deux fiefs à Rivière-des-Prairies, le premieren faveur de Philippe de Carion du Fresnoy et le second à Paul de Maurel. 1689: Le 4 avril, concession par M. Dollier à Jean-Baptiste Sicard, meunier, de 10 arpents de front sur 20 de profondeur sur le bord de la rivière des Prairies, à la Pointe du Rapide, pour faire bâtir le moulin. 1694: Érection de la Rivière-des-Prairies en cure ou paroisse. Donné àQuébec ce trentième août mil six cent quatre vingt quatorze, signé Jean, Évêque de Québec, par Monseigneur Dreuvy. 1704: Construction, sur le terrain où elle est aujourd'hui, d'une première église en bois en l'honneur de St-Joseph et d'un presbytère. 1708: Une première église en pierre est commencée et achevée en 1711, le 8 novembre et bénite le même jour par M. De Belmont, grand vicaire et supérieur de Montréal à Ville-Marie. Menacée de destruction par l'effet du gel, elle est reconstruite en 1716. 1721: 54 familles se partagent le bord de la rivière sur deux lieues (9km). L'étendue de la paroisse sera établie par ordonnance, l'année suivante. 1790: Chute du clocher... un grand vent l'a soulevé et fait tombé dans le cimetière qui se trouve du côté opposé au presbytère. 1834: Un décret annonce la création de la municipalité de la Rivière-des-Prairies dont le territoire se confond avec celui de la paroisse Saint- Joseph. 1845: Le 1er juillet, la municipalité est érigée en vertu de l'Acte 8 Victoria chap. 40. Trefflé Couvrette, aubergiste dans le village de Saint-Joseph de la Rivière-des-Prairies, élu premiermaire de Rivière-des-Prairies. 1873: Construction du presbytère actuel. 1875: Construction de l'église actuelle, réalisée par Victor Bourgeau. Le 21 juillet 1875, bénédiction de la première pierre angulaire de notre église faite par messire P. Leblanc, prêtre chanoine de la cathédrale. Bénédiction de l'église le 30 décembre 1875 (Registre de la paroisse St-Joseph RDP) 1900: La population est de 675 âmes. 1910: Déménagement du cimetière sur le coteau à sa place actuelle. 1910: Monsieur Primat Paré est élu maire (de 1910 à 1938). 1923: Arrivée des religieuses du Sacré-Coeur de Jésus, enseignantes. L'école paroissiale est sous la direction des religieuses 1953: Rivière-des-Prairies est incorporée en ville. La population est de 6500 âmes. 1963: Rivière-des-Prairies est annexée à la ville de Montréal, le 20 juillet 1963. Le maire de l'époque, Jean Drapeau, dira: "Montréal n'épargnera rien pour faire de ce nouveau territoire l'un des quartiers les plus prospères de la Métropole". Années 1970: 1972-1975: Célébration des Fêtes Centennales. C'est le début d'un développement domiciliaire, la population passe de 15 459 hab. en 1976 à 60 000 hab. en 2010. Des infrastructures verront progressivement le jour : (CLSC (1973), bureau de liaison (1974), piscine Alexis-Carrel et aréna René-Masson (1977), écoles primaires et secondaire D'autres équipements collectifs suivront : centre communautaire, centreaquatique, bibliothèque, poste de quartier, centre récréatif Le quartier a toujours été marqué par une concentration d'institutions pénitentiaires: Boscoville (1947), Cité des Prairies, anciennement Centre Berthelet (1963), Institut Philippe-Pinel (1970), Centre de détention de Rivière-des-Prairies (1996). Années 1980: Le développement industriel démarre. Usine d'épuration des eaux, centrede distribution Métro-Richelieu et autres. Le secteur commercial n'est encore constitué que de petits commerces. La construction de quelques résidences pour personnes âgées dont le Filde l'eau et Cité Rive, sur le boulevard Gouin provoque une concentration de cette clientèle dans ce secteur. Communautés La communauté italienne La communauté italienne s'installe en nombre dans les années 70. Lesmembres de cette communauté se sont dotés progressivement d'infrastructures qui leur sont propres. La communauté haïtienne La communauté haïtienne arrive à RDP dans les années 90 et s'installe àl'est et à l'ouest du boulevard Armand-Bombardier, particulièrement dans les coopératives et logements sociaux. It is unknown exactly when or where Caroline and Elie passed away. Two survivors, who clung to the boat for 10 hours, were picked up today by a passing ore carrier, the Frontenac. Sheriff deputies identified the dead as William Hamm, 26, his wife Elaine, 25, and David Clarence Arbour, 2, all of Escanaba, and Miss Jeanne McClinchey, 32, of Hulbert. The survivors were Mr. and Mrs.Clarence Arbour, parents of the dead boy and owners of the boat. Arbour held the bodyof his son when he was rescued. Arbour and his wife were taken to Escanaba Hospital for treatment of shock and exposure. Arbour said the party left Sunday for a 24-mile trip toWashington Island and ran out of gas. He said the boat capsized while the party was transferring fuel fromthe can to the engine. The Frontenac brought in the two survivors and the body of one of the victims. A fishing tug brought in the other two bodies. Twenty-two year old Narcisse, also known as Nazaire, married on 16 May 1848, in St-Jacques-l'Achigan, Montcalm County, QC. His bride was a 30-year old, local woman by the name of Nathalie MERCIER. The couple seems to have had 6 children, one daughter and 5 sons, beforeNazaire's untimely death. The young laborer was just 31-years old whenhe died in the St-Michel-Archangel Hospital in Quebec City, QC, on 17 January 1858. At this point, Nathalie must have been forced to disperseher children. Daughter Julie appears to have been given to a convent, as she later grew to become a nun withthe Sisters of Ste-Anne. Eldest son Hormisdas lived with strangers in St-Jacques, QC, in 1851 and in 1861; nothing is known of him beyond this. Second son Mederic died in infancy. Third son Joseph was baptized in 1851 but nothing is known of himbeyond this. Fourth son Antoine died in infancy. Youngest son Jacques-Placide lived with his mother in St-Jacques in 1861, when both of them lived in the home of the parish priest, Toussaint ROUEN.
